Paper Planes – Movie Review
Paper Planes is a movie that quickly draws audiences into the story. Soon everyone is rooting for the star of the film, Dylan Webber (played by Ed Oxenbould). This kid is a sweetheart.
Dylan is twelve and lives with his father (Sam Worthington) in a small town in Western Australia. His mother died a few months ago and since then his father has been grieving to the point of neglecting his son. This man cannot work. He cannot do anything except rest on the couch. His grief is overwhelming for him.
But Dylan is moving on with his life. He still misses his mother but he knows life goes on. At least it does for him. His dad is still mired in pain and unhappiness.
One day Dylan’s class gets involved in making paper planes and they have a contest. Dylan’s plane flies farther than anyone expected. He enters the regional contest and then the nationals. Could this little boy actually make it to the World Junior Paper Plane Championships in Japan?
Dylan studies everything that flies in hopes of folding the best paper plane that will outfly all the others. While he is on his quest for flying glory, Dylan makes several friends, including an unlikely ally. Somehow this good-hearted boy manages to make a friend out of the class bully.
While everyone else is competing to be winners and have bragging rights, Dylan only hopes that if he wins his father will want to spend more time with him. It is heartbreaking to see how this young boy lifts himself up and forges on all by himself. His father is too grief-stricken to take much interest in his son leaving Dylan to take care of himself and his own dreams.
Needless to say, this is an inspiring and “uplifting” story that families can enjoy together. The movie has garnered nominations for several international film awards and won an award as the Jerusalem Film Festival. It is the top- grossing family film in Australian history. It is inspiring, imaginative, and will have everyone’s hopes “soaring” for this kind-hearted young boy.
Paper Planes will be released in limited theaters on September 4 and On Demand and Digital Download in North America September 8, 2015. Gather your family, grab some popcorn, and enjoy this story of life and love.

Lego Star Wars: The New Yoda Chronicles on DVD
What do you get when you combine Lego and Star Wars? Some pretty cute characters, that’s what. Lego lovers and Star Wars enthusiasts will experience some fun thrills, not to mention cute one-liners, in the Lego Star Wars: The New Yoda Chronicles collection on DVD.
Four complete episodes make up this light-hearted look at the world of Star Wars. With a mash-up of characters from the movies and fun jokes, the stories are great for kids and adults.
What makes this especially enjoyable are the clever lines and the way the characters don’t take themselves too seriously. At one point, Yoda is called a little green man. Funny, it is.
Obi-Wan, Dart Vader, Luke, Leia, Han Solo, C3PO, R2D2, Anakin, the Emperor, Stormtroopers, and other characters that have become part of our pop culture combine in this collection of Star Wars stories with a twist. They are all Lego characters with Lego accessories and spaceships.
The appeal to younger – and even older – viewers is the tongue-in-cheek approach to the adventures. They are more fun than frightening. They are comical and enjoyable stories that will have viewers smiling and chuckling as they see the battles and the characters interacting in a different way than they do in the highly acclaimed feature film franchise. This version of the characters is more entertaining for the younger viewers who might not be old enough to appreciate the feature films but still want to be Star Wars fans.
The New Yoda Chronicles is a seven-episode TV show. This collection includes four of those episodes, along with an alternate ending to “Clash of the Skywalkers.” The series tells the Star Wars story with interlocking, intergalactic adventures.
The four 22-minute episodes in this collection are “Escape from the Jedi Temple” which originally aired May 4, 2014, “Race for the Holocrons” which originally aired June 15. 2015, “Raid on Coruscant” which premiered September 7, 2014, and “Clash of the Skywalkers” which premiered November 23, 2014.
There are 88 minutes of Lego Star Wars fun plus the bonus alternate ending.
Lego Star Wars: The New Yoda Chronicles is rated TV-Y7.

Peanuts: EMMY Honored Collection on DVD
Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Schroeder, Sally, Peppermint Patty, Marci, and of course Snoopy have been part of our lives forever. The Peanuts gang has entertained us in the newspapers, in books, on Broadway, and on TV for decades and a new feature film is about to hit the screens. Peanuts: EMMY Honored Collection is a DVD set filled with plenty of fun from the loveable gang with laughs and entertainment for the entire family.
Eleven shows comprise this delightful two-disc collection. The stories feature all of the characters we have come to love through the years. You’re the Greatest, Charlie Brown (1979), She’s a Good Skate, Charlie Brown (1980), It’s Magic, Charlie Brown (1981), Someday You’ll Find Her, Charlie Brown (1981), Is this Goodbye, Charlie Brown? (1983), Life is a Circus, Charlie Brown (1980), What Have We Learned, Charlie Brown? (1983), It’s Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown (1984), Snoopy’s Getting Married, Charlie Brown (1985), Why, Charlie Brown, Why? (1990), and You’re a Good Sport, Charlie Brown (1975) showcase the fun and innocence of these kids as they face the obstacles of life.
There are running storylines through the history of Peanuts like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football only to have it pulled away at the last minute by Lucy. Well, hang onto your hats because he actually did kick it one time. Check out It’s Magic, Charlie Brown. He did kick the ball, but he was invisible at the time and Lucy said it didn’t count. Of course. And Marci’s crush on Charlie Brown is evident in You’re the Greatest, Charlie Brown. Snoopy’s alter egos are front and center. After all, he’s the Masked Marvel, the WWI Flying Ace, and Flashbeaggle. Plus he also takes a turn at being the Great Houndini and tests out his magic abilities. And he turns into Hugo the Great for a circus act. This little pooch has a variety of personalities and sidelines.
We all have our favorite characters. And these little kids all have their young crushes. Lucy loves Schroeder, Sally adores her “Sweet Baboo” Linus, and Peppermint Patty enjoys her friendship with Charlie Brown. Whether Linus and his blanket, Schroeder and his piano, or just the playfulness of the entire gang entertains you, this is a “must have” for all Peanuts fans.
Peanuts: EMMY Honored Collection has over 300 fun-filled Peanuts minutes packed into the two-discs. While not every movie won an EMMY award, they were all nominated and recognized by the industry. This is indeed a great collection from the Peanuts gang, honoring all the kids – and Snoopy – as they try their best to get through whatever life throws at them.

American Experience: Walt Disney on PBS
What do you think of when you hear the name “Walt Disney?” Do you think of Disneyland? Perhaps a favorite film like Snow White or The Little Mermaid comes to mind. Maybe it’s Mary Poppins. And if you have kids then you might think of all the money you spent on Disney products throughout the years. But inevitably, the name “Disney” brings smiles to young and old.
The new two-part documentary airing on PBS’ American Experience takes viewers into the psyche with all the ups and downs, highs and lows, and light and dark sides of the man who has become an icon in the world of entertainment, movies, adventure, and all around pop culture – Walt Disney.
Cary Grant once said he would like to be Cary Grant. The persona people had of him was not what he was in real life. That also was true for Walt Disney. He wanted to be what his image was, but in truth he was very different. He had a very dark side, was often quick tempered, held a grudge forever, and could strike fear into others. But this man also gave generations some of their happiest moments. He was truly a dichotomy of character. His greatest strength was his vision. He knew what he wanted to create and he did it. And for that the world can say, “Thank you, Walt.”
But Walt Disney wasn’t all ‘Bibbity, Bobbity, Boos’ and fairy tales. His dark side was strong. Perhaps that is why the Disney Company recently acquired the Star Wars franchise. It reflects the dark and light side of Walt.
Disney loved to be the center of attention. He wanted to be famous and he wanted to make a mark on history. This movie demonstrates his early rise to fame and his deep emotions that not only spurred on the creations of some of the most popular films but also caused him great internal strife. At one point in 1931 he had a breakdown. “I cracked up,” he confessed. His strong views against communism are examined as well as his great imagination when it came to his creations. He knew animation could make people laugh. He needed to find out if it could make them cry and stir deep emotions within viewers. Well, it wasn’t long before he had his answer when the studio premiered the first feature-length animated film “Snow White.” Then “Bambi” and “Pinocchio” also showed him that animated characters could affect strong emotions in humans.
The two-part film shows Walt from the time he created Oswald the rabbit to Mickey Mouse then Silly Symphonies, then Snow White and the other initial classic animated features, then his nature documentaries, then Disneyland and his weekly TV show, then finally his vision for Walt Disney World.
Disney’s love of trains and his Peter Pan-like character of being a kid at heart sparked his idea of an amusement park unlike any other. He wanted people to enter a living movie when they came to Disneyland. He wanted it to be a place of fun for families. He wanted it to be clean and enjoyable for all members of the family. And his final project, which he never lived to see realized, was Walt Disney World in Orlando. He knew everything he wanted and even the exact spot in which he would place a bench on which he and his wife would sit to watch the guests in the park. He was definitely hands-on when it came to his visions.
This film is an eye-opener for people who do not know anything about the man who was responsible for much of our culture. The idea of “Uncle Walt” goes down the drain, replaced by the true flesh and blood man that he was. However, even though his dark side is revealed for all to see, we still have to say “Thank you” to this man. After all, where would we be without our wonderful memories of times spent in Disneyland, in the theaters watching our favorite movies, and children cuddling up with their favorite dolls or stuffed animals from a Disney film?
American Experience: Walt Disney premiers September 14-15 on PBS.

The Age of Adaline on Combo Pack
The age of Adaline is 29. The age of Adaline is 107. Which one is correct? They both are. Blake Lively stars in The Age of Adaline, a magical romance that unfolds over a century.
Adaline is a widow with a young daughter. She is 29 years old. Then one night she has an accident and due to unusual circumstances, Adaline’s DNA is basically arrested in time. Her body has been halted at the age of 29, yet Adaline continues to live. And live, and live. To the world she is a 29-year-old woman, but as the decades go by she realizes it is difficult to maintain her secret and every ten years she moves and changes her identity.
If the authorities discovered her secret she would be the object for scientific study and that is unacceptable to her. While she maintains her youthful appearance her daughter ages normally. In order to keep her secret, the two cannot live together, yet their relationship of mother and daughter thrives. Ellen Burstyn plays Adaline’s daughter.
It’s about time for Adaline to move again and assume a new identity when she meets a man with whom she falls in love, against her better judgment. What will happen if she divulges her secret? And when she meets someone from her past, her life takes a dramatic turn.
Michel Huisman co-stars as the man who captures Adaline’s love and attention. Kathy Baker and Harrison Ford play his parents. In actuality Adaline is their age yet she presents herself as a young woman dating their son.
The story is interesting and thought provoking. As the world changes, Adaline’s body remains the same. It is an exhausting dilemma for this woman. She has been 29-years-old for 78 years. Is it time for her to divulge her life’s story? And just exactly what is her story? She has no idea what happened to her and why she is the way she is. The narration of the film is interesting and describes the incidents in Adaline’s life and the details of her accident. The descriptions are insightful and provide the background for her situation.
The Blu-day + DVD + Digital HD combo pack includes some bonus features. In a behind-the-scenes feature the story is described as “magical realism.” It is definitely a magical story played out with Lively carrying the entire film. Another feature looks at the costumes and styling as the story unfolds over decades. The film is “a love story for the ages” and that describes it to a “T.”
The movie is thought provoking. If you didn’t age but continued to live, would you get bored after awhile? If you had to continually change your identity would that be fun or frustrating? If your child grew old and was facing old age and ultimate death while you stayed young, how would you feel? If you couldn’t fall in love and live a normal life what would you do?
The Age of Adaline is also available on a single DVD. The movie is rated PG-13 for a suggestive comment.
