The Roosevelts: An Intimate History on PBS

ROOS-Home

Ken Burns’ latest effort is a seven-part film exploring the lives and accomplishments of the Roosevelt family, notably Theodore, Franklin, and Eleanor. The Roosevelts: An Intimate History includes the beginning of the family, their lives, and the childhoods and adulthoods of the three most famous members of that influential family.

Since the lives of the family members intersected, this is not a film that is separated into three parts: Teddy, FDR, and Eleanor. It is a complete history of their entire lives and a history of the country.

Teddy Roosevelt was a very popular president, however before he ascended to the White House, his life was full of other experiences, including his first marriage, the birth of his first daughter, and on one fateful day, the deaths of both his beloved mother and his wife. Too mired in grief, Theodore sent his daughter to be raised by his sister, until years later when he married his childhood sweetheart and they started their own family. It was then when Teddy retrieved his first child.

The Roosevelts 1Many people think of Theodor Roosevelt as a big, strapping man, but as a child he was a very sickly kid, suffering from severe asthma. He loved animals, and he loved killing them. And, the little TR was a taxidermist who decorated his room with all kinds of dead animals, especially birds. That’s a different image of the man than the one most of us have in our minds.

After the deaths of his mother and wife, Theodore Roosevelt did not remain in the New York State Assembly. He went out west to the Badlands and became a rancher. He also wrote several books.

In the meantime, Franklin Roosevelt was growing up, as a young boy doted on by his mother Sarah. Sarah married James Roosevelt even though the age difference between them was great. When he became ill, Sarah and Franklin cared for the aging man.

Then there is Eleanor. She was Teddy’s niece and a distant cousin to Franklin. She was born a Roosevelt. Her contributions to this country are, in many ways, as important as those of the male members of her family.

The Roosevelts ddThis Ken Burns film includes interviews with historians, including Doris Kearns Goodwin and David McCullough, who described the two presidents as “exceptional.” There are photographs of the Roosevelt family, films, interviews, and amazing tidbits, including a photo of young Theodore with his brother Elliot looking out a window at the funeral of President Abraham Lincoln.

Recently, filmmaker Ken Burns along with writer Geoffrey C. Ward spoke with journalists about this film and the Roosevelt family. Burns began, “Let me just briefly say that, for 30 years, Geoff Ward and I have found the Roosevelts, all of them, irresistible, deeply flawed, inspirational, complicated human beings central to an understanding of the national narrative that we call an American history.”

Ken Burns’ admiration for the Roosevelt family was clear. “Theodore Roosevelt, Sr., was something really very new in the world, which was a philanthropist, a genuine philanthropist devoting not only money but time to doing that and had thought that he would seek public office, did not succeed,” Burns explained. “The bosses had sort of kept him from winning election. It sort of in a way killed him. He died shortly thereafter, but I think that sense of obligation, genuine obligation of putting your actions and not just your money where your mouth is was inherited by his son Theodore, and certainly that was the case with Franklin whose own father James also instilled that sense of obligation.”

Burns emphasized the point that these people were truly dedicated. “And this is really the difference here, that these are well‑to‑do people who could have spent their lives in luxury and comfort, as many of their own relatives did, but instead spent themselves in public service. It wasn’t checkbook politics. It was actual, dedicated public service. And to just give you an idea of how much they spent themselves, if you can imagine the oldest photograph of TR that you can think of, he looks like he’s 85 years old. He died at age 60.”

S17201 Editorial use onlyWard described the film as “braiding” their lives together, a term which Burns agreed is the perfect word for this very complex undertaking. Their personal lives, their professional lives, their illnesses, the history of the country, the fashions, and the estates at Oyster Bay and Hyde Park all combine in this very intricate and interesting history of one of America’s most famous families.

I asked the filmmakers whether Eleanor would have been an historical figure in her own right had she not married Franklin. “I don’t think we’d be talking about her,” Geoff Ward answered. “It’ll get me in trouble with some people, but that’s my view. I think it was very important that she was a Roosevelt to begin with. And then, being the wife of FDR gave her a platform and made people welcome her. She was a very shy person but she was sort of invited in because she was Franklin Roosevelt’s wife. And then, you couldn’t stop her. By then she was absolutely and independent and astounding person.”

Ken Burns added, “I think that she would have continued in a very small and probably unnoticed way … the passionate commitment to help others less fortunate than themselves.” He explained that she would take Franklin to the settlement houses while they were dating to show him how other people lived.

The Roosevelt family is a very interesting group and Ken Burns has done an excellent job in telling their story.

Ken Burns’ The Roosevelts: An Intimate History premiers Sunday, September 14, 2014 on PBS and continues nightly for the rest of the week, with the final episode on Saturday, September 20.

Riff Rockit If I Could Fly CD GIVEAWAY

IfICouldFly completedIn the world of Riff Rockit, one goal is to inspire kids to learn to play instruments in order to experience firsthand the thrill of music performance. In the soundscape of If I Could Fly, Riff wanted the guitar placed front and center, so naturally his guitar player had to be the top of the crop. This CD is made for ages 3-9.

Explains Riff Rockit, “I grew up in an age when playing guitar was seen as ‘cool,’ and boys and girls alike had their favorite guitarists. In today’s music world, it feels like most of the attention is on the singer/dancer/entertainer, and guitar players have been obliged to take something of a back seat.  I hope that families enjoy these songs and that If I Could Fly inspires kids from an early age to want to play guitar and sing.”

Indie musician Evan Michael is Riff Rockit. Evan is a leukemia survivor with a great desire to help those suffering from blood cancers. All proceeds from If I Could Fly will be donated to BeTheMatch.org, an organization whose mission is to deliver cures for blood cancers.

Free downloads of all of Riff Rockit’s albums and DVDs are available, with a request for voluntary donations, at http://riffrockitcharities.com, a website dedicated to contributions to BeTheMatch.org.

Baby Rockstar: Lullaby Renditions of Frozen CD

babyrockstar

The movie Frozen and the music from the film have taken over the planet. This is a beloved film and the music is award winning. So why should babies miss out on the delightful songs? They don’t have to. They can fall asleep listening to soft, calming versions of the songs, thanks to Baby Rockstar.

These lullaby versions are a great way for babies to hear the songs that perhaps their parents and older siblings listen to and sing all day long. Even though the songs in the film are upbeat and want to make listeners dance and sing, the Baby Rockstar songs are peaceful. But the underlying tunes are there. They’re just done in a tranquil way for babies.

My favorite on this CD is “In Summer.” Older kids will sing the song from the soundtrack and think of Olaf, but babies will hear their own version and drift off to a peaceful sleep.

Baby Rockstar has been creating music for babies translating them from chart topping hits to soft lullabies for little ears. Their lullaby renditions of hit songs have been soothing babies with songs by Katy Perry, Blake Shelton, Coldplay, the Beatles and others. Each song is translated into a soft lullaby that even older kids (and parents) will enjoy at the end of a long day.

The Lullaby Renditions of Frozen CD is especially delightful because the songs are all beloved by fans of the film. The tracks are:

  • Frozen Heart
  • Do You Want to Build a Snowman
  • For the First Time in Forever
  • Love Is an Open Door
  • Let It Go
  • Reindeers Are Better Than People
  • In Summer
  • For the First Time in Forever (Reprise)
  • Fixer Upper
  • Vuelie
  • Heimr Arnadalr

If you know someone who is expecting or recently had a baby, this is a wonderful gift. You can get this for the baby and the original soundtrack for the older children. Everyone can enjoy the songs from Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, Sven, and the Trolls.

Baby Rockstar: Lullaby Renditions of Frozen lists for $14.99. It’s available for a discount here.

Rogers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella – 50th Anniversary Edition

cinderella50Cinderella comes to life in this 1965 made-for-TV movie, with songs, dances, and the romance that makes this the beloved fairy tale that it is. With music by Rogers and Hammerstein, an all-star cast, the heartwarming story, and the fun of live performances versus animation, this is a DVD that will be cherished for generations. It has been in my family. And now, on the 50th Anniversary Edition DVD, there is even more to enjoy.

Lesley Ann Warren’s first starring role, basically her first role ever, plays the enchanted Cinderella, who goes from the sooty-faced house worker to the belle of the ball, with the help of her Fairy Godmother, played by Celeste Holm.

Playing her evil stepmother and dastardly stepsisters are Jo Van Fleet and Pat Carroll and Barbara Ruick. With those as the evils, you know the royals are going to be Hollywood royalty. Ginger Rogers is the queen and Walter Pidgeon is the King. What a great royal couple they make.

So, who is the knight in shining armor? Or I should say the prince that steals Cinderella’s heart? That role is charmingly played by Stuart Damon. Daytime viewers know him from General Hospital, but he happens to make a very delightful prince charming.

Songs from this entertaining show include “In My Own Little Corner,” “The Prince is Giving a Ball,” “Impossible; It’s Possible!,” “Ten Minutes Ago,” “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful,” and others. Honestly, these songs last in your mind longer than the film. They were wonderfully crafted by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein and just hearing the titles makes me start humming them.

Nothing is more romantic than the songs Cinderella and the Prince sing together. Their chemistry will charm viewers as the love between them is ignited.

We all know the story, and this version follows it with the glass slipper and the hunt for the beautiful maiden.

This version is a remake of the 1957 TV movie, which starred Julie Andrews as Cinderella. Of course it’s dated with the sets, but still very much enjoyable and suitable for the entire family. This is definitely a keeper.

A bonus on this 50th Anniversary Edition is a retrospective featurette. Lesley Ann Warren was 18 years old when she made this movie. She remembers how the ball gown was so heavy that after several hours she would get injections in her shoulders because her muscles were so tight from the weight of the gown and she couldn’t lift her arms. Stuart Damon was brought in to replace Jack Jones and he was shocked at the thought of playing the prince. Damon admits “Ten Minutes Ago” was his favorite song in the film, and Richard Rogers “expected perfection” in every note. There are more interesting tidbits in this wonderful featurette that will delight all fans of the film.

Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella is a classic and this DVD will be cherished and enjoyed for years. Quite honestly, I cannot stop singing the songs. Enjoy this 83-minute movie over and over again.

They Shall Have Music DVD

theyshallhavemusic

Anyone who loves music and appreciates the talent of musicians will enjoy this movie. They Shall Have Music is a music-filled story featuring the great Jascha Heifetz.

When Frankie (Gene Reynolds), a juvenile delinquent, hears Jascha Heifetz play, his life is changed forever. Heifetz stirs the music within the boy and soon Frankie is spending his time playing his deceased father’s violin instead of hanging out with his gang of young thugs. His stepfather has other ideas and insists the boy goes to reform school.
Frankie runs away and finds the Lawson School of Music where he is welcomed and his musical talent is encouraged and enriched. The school caters to kids from poor families, with donations of instruments and very little tuition. But when Mr. Flowers (Porter Hall), who has been loaning his instruments to the school, suddenly demands his payment or else he will take them all back, there is trouble ahead.

The only way the school will be able to survive is with the help of Jascha Heifetz. But how can Frankie and his friends convince Mr. Heifetz to help them? Maybe taking his $70,000 Stradivarius (today worth millions) might get his attention.

Anyone who has a musician or a budding musician in his/her family will enjoy the story and the wonderful music. The movie was for an Academy Award in 1939 for Best Music Scoring. Andrea Leeds, Joel McCrea, and Walter Brennan also star in the film. The Peter Meremblum California Junior Symphony is featured as the student body of the Lawson School of Music.

This 1939 movie is not rated but is suitable for everyone. And even considering it is in black and white, any young musician in the house will be riveted by the film. It’s truly a fine story with amazing music and wonderfully talented young musicians. And it’s a treasure to see Jascha Heifetz. This movie is truly a little gem.

They Shall Have Music is part of the Warner Archive Collection and can be ordered from their site at www.wbshop.com.

Tom And Jerry: The Lost Dragon DVD

losttdragonGet ready for an all-new animated film featuring everyone’s favorite little mouse and cat. In this film, the duo face sorcery and evil, while trying to save a baby dragon. The Lost Dragon is a cute film for young viewers.

The story begins with the beginning. Tom is a kitten living with young Athena, the niece of the evil witch Drizelda. Drizelda is banished from the hamlet because of her dark magic, but Athena stays. She is a sweet girl whose love of animals is overwhelming. As a matter of fact, she just found little Jerry, a baby mouse, and she intends him to be Tom’s best friend.

Now, several years later, Athena lives with a menagerie of animals and cares for them all, with the help of Tom and Jerry. Unfortunately, Drizelda is planning to return to the town, but she needs the dragon’s egg that was recently laid by the mother dragon.
Athena and her brood discover the egg and it happens to hatch when Tom is caring for it. The baby dragon thinks Tom is his mother. Honestly, this dragon is the cutest little character I’ve seen in a long time. Athena names him Puffy, and she tries to keep him hidden from the townsfolk.

Well, things get ugly when Drizelda returns to take the baby dragon, and then when the mother dragon comes looking for her baby, things really get intense. However, in the end, the baby is safe and sound, and finds his real mother.
The movie has some musical numbers and some fun animal characters, including a cute donkey and a clumsy warthog.

The bonus features include four bonus Tom and Jerry episodes. There is also an activity booklet included with this DVD, which is age appropriate for 3+.

Tom and Jerry: The Lost Dragon is not rated.

Blended Combo Pack

blendedAdam Sandler and Drew Barrymore reunite for another romantic comedy. This time they travel to Africa in the movie Blended.

Lauren (Barrymore) is a divorced woman with two young sons. Jim (Sandler) is the widower and father of three young girls. After being set up on a blind date, which turns out to be a complete disaster, they think they’ll never see each other again. At least they hope they won’t. But through some strange circumstances, they both end up on a luxurious African vacation with their families. And, to make matters worse, they have to share a suite.
But that’s still not the worst part. It turns out this vacation is for “blended” families and designed to bring all the members of the family together in a fun and loving experience. The whole week is designed around the new family unit. And, because they are both on the trip pretending to be other people (that’s the way they got the trip in the first place), they must act like one big, blended family, even though they cannot stand each other.

Now adding to all this drama is Lauren’s oldest son who resents Jim and doesn’t want him “dating” his mother. He’s at the age where he’s discovering his sexuality. And Jim’s middle child still cannot let go of her deceased mother. But his oldest daughter (Bella Thorne) desperately wants to break out of her tomboy persona she has and delve into the world of hair, makeup, and dresses.

Okay, so those are the characters. What happens when they all join together for this “blended family” vacation is the crux of the story. And, if you cannot guess, Jim and Lauren discover they really do like – and love – each other, and yes, the kids feel the same. Hey, I’m not giving anything away here. It’s a Sandler/Barrymore romantic comedy. You know they’re going to get together in the end.

The bonus features are quite fun. Yes, they did go to Africa to film this and there is a featurette about the location. There is also a featurette about the animals of Africa. There are several deleted scenes and more featurettes. The one that might be of interest to viewers who enjoy seeing movie magic, is about a scene in which they ride Ostriches. Don’t worry! They don’t actually ride real animals. Through movie magic it looks like they are riding the Ostriches, but they are actually riding, well, you’ll have to see this featurette to know how they filmed the scene.
They two actors teamed up for the 1998 film The Wedding Singer and the 2004 film 50 First Dates. The pairing of these Barrymore and Sandler is what makes their films entertaining. The story of Blended is kind of cute, but the combination of Sandler and Barrymore is the salvation of the film. They are definitely a cute onscreen couple.
The combo pack included a DVD, a Blu-ray, and a Digital HD Ultraviolet code.
Blended is rated PG-13 for crude and sexual content and language.
