Talking with the Cast of Scorpion

SCORPIONIn the hit CBS drama Scorpion, Elyes Gabel, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Jadyn Wong, and Ari Stidham play a group of geniuses who work together to help Homeland Security and others defeat threats. Robert Patrick plays their boss and Katharine McPhee plays their anchor to the real world. These geniuses are smart in their own fields, but when it comes to street smarts and human interactions, they often need some help and grounding.

Ari Stidham, who plays Sylvester Dodd, acknowledged to a group of journalists recently, that even though his character is tech savvy, he isn’t. “I have an iPhone 4s. It’s got a really cracked screen. I’m still running Snow Leopard on both of my processors at home. I make music, and I record it on Garage Band 2008.” Okay, so he’s not as up-to-date on the latest versions. But he sure pulls it off on screen.

“I have to tap underneath the keyboard instead of on the keys because of sound, but it’s hard for me to look like I’m typing because I normally look at the letters when I’m typing [in real life].

Ari also recounted a story about spilling water on the set. “It must have [cost] a lot of money that CBS lost because of an actual technological glitch because I’m a butterfingers.”

Eddie Kaye Thomas’ character is Toby Curtis. Thomas was excited that as the show continues and the characters grow and their relationships deepen, the tech part of the stories is not the main focus. “It’s like we’re bursting out of all this science and computer stuff with these great serialized character stories. And it’s really exciting. I mean, it just feels like TV is stepping up their game in terms of characters.” He described some of the personal relationships in the show and the emotions that the characters feel. The show has evolved. “Character stories are what we get to play with,” said Thomas. “And then we also get to save the world.”
Robert Patrick plays the father figure/boss on the show and takes that same persona off the set as well. “What goes on on the set kind of mirrors what we’re actually going through as characters. And I’m the oldest guy on the crew here, and I feel responsible for them. And I feel responsible for them as actors and their characters. I’m real comfortable with it, and I love working with these guys.”

He acknowledged the cast is a family “and a lot of fun to work with. And I do take it seriously and try to conduct myself in that fashion [of a patriarch].”

On a personal note, Patrick is a veteran who has had a great career in the industry. He is always a wonderful interview for me.

Scorpion has been renewed for a second season. It is one of the season’s biggest hits. It’s more than simply a dramatic Big Bang Theory. It’s deeper than that. And It’s filled with quirky characters, interesting technology, and a lot of entertainment.

The Judge on Combo Pack

JUDGE_BD Combo_2D SK#8A9040The Judge is a movie that has been making the rounds at film festivals and awards shows. The acting is phenomenal and the story is thought provoking.

Robert Duvall and Robert Downey Jr. star in this intense drama about relationships. This is not a story about a court case. This is not a story about lawyers. This is a story about relationships between people – between brothers, between lovers, and between a father and his son.

Hank Palmer (Downey) is a Chicago lawyer with little scruples. He is good at his job because all he cares about is winning. Hank grew up in a small Indiana town where his father Joseph (Duvall) is the judge, and is a no-nonsense, hard-nosed man. Hank has no good memories of his father. Well, almost no good memories. He fled the small town and has been estranged from his family for decades. But when his mother suddenly dies, he comes back and confronts his past.

What Hank discovers when he returns is that nothing has changed. But things do change. During the course of the film Hank – and indeed everyone – learns more about their relationships, why Joseph treated Hank the way he did in the past, why Hank and his older brother have the relationship they do, and why Joseph is behaving the way he is. Joseph is getting forgetful, but has he returned to drinking or is there something more going on?

When Joseph, aka “Judge”, is arrested for running down a bicyclist, he has no memory of the event. It is up to Hank to come to his rescue, to the reluctance of his father. Hank is a phenomenal lawyer, and the Judge needs the best he can get.

Billy Bob Thornton plays the prosecuting attorney, Dax Shepard is the local attorney who is on Joseph’s team, Vera Farmiga is Hank’s former girlfriend, Ken Howard is the judge presiding over the trial, Jeremy Strong is Hank’s mentally challenged brother, and Vincent D’Onofrio is Hank’s older brother. This is a fabulous cast.

The acting is top rate but the story is slow, deep, and depressing. To put it bluntly, it is intense. This is not something for everyone. This is definitely not for children. But this is a film that shows the acting talents of both Duvall and Downey. Robert Duvall is nominated for an Academy Award and has been nominated for many others during this awards season and has won several awards already. The movie won the “Truly Moving Picture Award” at the Heartland Film Festival.

The Combo Pack includes a DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital Download, as well as several bonus features including deleted scenes and a look at the story.

Bring home The Judge on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, and Digital HD beginning January 27th

The Judge is rated R for language including some sexual references.

Paddington Comes to the Big Screen

paddingtonKids and adults are in for a treat with this adorable movie. Paddington is popular little bear, especially in England, however you don’t need to know anything about him to enjoy this film that is based on the children’s books by Michael Bond.

Paddington is the story of a young bear from Peru who travels across the ocean to find a new home. All he has with him is a red, floppy hat that was given to his family by an explorer years ago, and a little tag that says, “Please look after this bear. Thank you.” Oh, and he has a stash of his favorite food – marmalade.

The little fellow finds himself alone in London’s Paddington Station, wondering what will happen to him. Then a family discovers him and takes him home for the night. It turns out to be more than just one night. Although a bit clumsy and unfamiliar with the way people do things, Paddington endears himself to the family – at least most of the family. However, when a taxidermist takes him to be turned into a new museum exhibit, everyone comes to his rescue.

If you think this is just for kids, think again. It’s a cute and clever little film that will brighten up anyone’s day. And in the end, Paddington and the Browns learn exactly what it takes to be a “family.” It just takes love.

Paddington is adorable and I fully expect the toy stores to be selling Paddington bears for quite some time to come. Paddington’s adventures – and misadventures – are sure to be enjoyed by young and old, and in this day and age of commercialism, a Paddington bear is what every kid will need – male and female. And why not? He’s completely lovable.

Paddington is not animated. It’s a live-action film with Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) as Mr. Brown, the man who is hesitant to keep a bear but soon discovers how much the little guy adds to his family. Sally Hawkins is Mrs. Brown, and Ben Whishaw is the voice of Paddington. Nicole Kidman, Julie Walters, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, and Peter Capaldi round out the cast. While the human actors are enjoyable to watch, the star of the show, needless to say, is the CGI Paddington.

Paddington is rated PG.

Finding Graceland on DVD

gracelandHarvey Keitel, Johnathon Schaech, and Bridget Fonda star in Finding Graceland, a story of love, loss, and fate. Priscilla Presley was an executive producer for this 1998 movie that focuses on an eccentric man who claims to be Elvis.

Byron (Schaech) is a lost man and still grieving over the death of his wife a year earlier. They were in a car/train crash and she didn’t survive. He continues to drive his beloved 1959 Cadillac even though it bears the scars of the accident. When Byron picks up a hitchhiker, his entire life changes. The man (Keitel) claims to be Elvis and is on his way back to Graceland. Between the truck stop where the two meet and Memphis, the car trip provides Byron with a new look at life.

The two experience several incidents, in which “Elvis” manages to impress everyone they meet – everyone except jaded Byron. Byron is getting increasingly fed up with “Elvis” and attempts to disconnect from the man several times. But they keep reuniting and “Elvis” imparts plenty of wisdom on the young man, which Byron slowly accepts.
Then at a show featuring impersonators, the two men meet Marilyn Monroe, whose real name is Ashley (Fonda). Ashley is a great impersonator, and honestly, her impersonation of Monroe is amazing. Bridget Fonda actually sings a song as Marilyn, which is a fabulous scene. Fonda is the best Monroe lookalike I have ever seen. Her whole persona takes on the blonde bombshell’s traits however when the wig comes off, Ashley is a sweet, caring young woman without any traces of her professional character.

While performing his part of the show, “Elvis” wows the crowd and impresses even the skeptical Byron who, by this time, has become fond of the eccentric man. Once they arrive at Graceland, Byron and “Elvis” face their pasts and Byron is finally able to move forward with his life.

Finding Graceland is a quirky, slow-moving little film with some interesting interactions between the characters and some cute moments. As stated earlier, Bridget Fonda is amazing in this film. The movie is rated PG-13 for a sexual situation.

Away and Back on Hallmark Channel

Away and Back 3Away and Back is a delightful family film premiering January 25, 2015 on Hallmark Channel. Jason Lee and Minka Kelly are credited as the stars, however it is little Maggie Elizabeth Jones who steals the show.

Frankie (Jones) is a 10-year-old girl living in the country with her father Jack (Lee) and two older brothers (Jaren Lewison and Connor Paton). She’s a sweet, loving child. When Frankie discovers a pair of swans has made a nest on the lake next to their house, she becomes obsessed with the birds. Then when the mother swan is killed, Frankie feels she has to save the five eggs. The three siblings bring the eggs back to their home and little Frankie calls an ornithologist to learn how to take care of the eggs.

Away and Back 1Ginny (Kelly) is a blunt woman who has made a career caring for trumpeter swans, so when she receives the call from Frankie, she heads out to retrieve the eggs, to the dismay of the kids, especially Frankie. Ginny and Jack clash. Their personalities are completely opposite. He is more concerned with his daughter’s feelings and Ginny could care less about the child. She is devoted to the swans.

When the eggs hatch, Ginny brings the young swans to the lake where they were laid. Through long process of getting them used to the water and hoping the father swan will care for them, Ginny eventually comes to terms with the children and little Frankie becomes part of the effort to reunite the baby swans with their father.

But the swans are not the only things on Frankie’s mind when she is helping Ginny. This cunning little girl plays matchmaker and hopes Ginny and her father will become friends. Could this abrupt, outspoken woman and the protective father put their personalities aside and forge a friendship?

Away and Back 2While the romance blossoms, Frankie’s devotion to the swans grows, as well as her relationship with Ginny. Little Frankie is headstrong and determined to look out for the swans, no matter what she has to do. And what she ends up doing puts her life in danger.
Frankie’s favorite book is The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White, who also penned Charlotte’s Web and Stuart Little. The book is geared for ages 8-12, and kids will most likely want to check it out after seeing this movie. I’m not a kid, but I will definitely check out the book. There is much more to this movie than a story of friendship, love, and family. It is indeed a movie for everyone.

Little Maggie Elizabeth Jones co-starred in the fun 2011 feature film We Bought a Zoo, and was in the short-lived sitcom Ben and Kate (2012-2013). She is absolutely adorable and we’ll undoubtedly be seeing her a lot more.

Away and Back premiers Sunday, January 25, 2015 on Hallmark Channel. If you want a sweet, sensitive, and charming movie, this is it.

Sons of Liberty on History Channel

SonsOfLiberty1

This three-night event on History Channel is filled with thought-provoking and entertaining stories of the men – and women – who set the groundwork for the American Revolution. Sons of Liberty is a mesmerizing movie event depicting the roles Sam Adams (Ben Barns), Paul Revere (Michael Raymond-James), Dr. Joseph Warren (Ryan Eggold) John Hancock (Rafe Spall), and John Adams (Henry Thomas) played in the history of the United Stated.

Known as “the sons of liberty” these men became leaders although they did not seek notoriety. They were simply fed up with the tyrannical ways of the British crown. They were tired of the colonists being treated as second-class citizens.

The first night depicts the colonists standing up to the laws of King George. They begin to sow the seeds for the revolution. While Benjamin Franklin is in London having a good time, Sam and John Adams and their associates are feeling the wrath of the crown. They are beginning to plant the seeds of the revolution. And with the advice and consent of Virginia’s George Washington, they start forming their own army.

Sam Adams is an interesting man. Because his cousin John became president, many people don’t realize the role Sam had in the revolution. This man stood up openly against the British rule. He was a leader and along with several others, managed to do what the British thought was impossible.

The final straw was when the crown replaced the Massachusetts Governor with General Thomas Gage (Marton Csokas). Gage ruled the colony with an iron thumb and his brutal tactics backfired on him. He thought by using force he could scare the colonists into submission. He was wrong. They only became more resolved to fight the British for their rightful liberty.

With the Boston Tea Party, The Shot Heard Round the World, and the American Revolution, Sons of Liberty is a must-see television event. Due to the brutality and scenes of war, this is not for very young kids, however everyone else should see this wonderfully acted and interesting story of the men who made history. They were seeking justice and freedom. They got independence. Everyone living on American soil today and in the past owes gratitude to “The Sons of Liberty.”

Sons of Liberty airs January 25, 26, and 27 on History Channel.

Teen Movie All She Wishes on Digital and On Demand

all she wishes 1We all know high school is a difficult time – unless you’re the star of the football team or the head cheerleader. But even those kids have issues. All She Wishes is a cute teen film about high school senior, Sophie O’Dea (Lexi Giovagnoli), who desperately wants to finish school and get away from her small town and the people there. Ever since her mother passed away, she has been miserable. Her only joy is her photography.

For her birthday her father gives her a frame in which to put one of her photos. Like most frames, this one comes with a pre-printed photo. The photo is of a young male model/actor. He’s kind of cute, and even Sophie thinks he’s a hottie. Her grandmother Grace (Julia Duffy) gives Sophie her old car telling her that the car, named Star, has magical powers. Even her father claims the car is “haunted.”

The Valentine’s Day dance is coming up and Sophie doesn’t want to go alone. While driving Star (the magical car), she sets the picture frame on the passenger seat and ends up talking to the picture. Inadvertently she wishes she could talk the guy in the photo to the dance. Then, lo and behold, guess who magically shows up in the trunk of the car? Yep, it’s Drake (Calum Worthy), the model/actor from the picture frame. Every time she lets him out of the trunk and drives away, he appears back in the trunk again, wondering how he got there when just a few minutes ago he was in Los Angeles.

Well, as it turns out, Star is magic after all. Drake hangs out with Sophie while they try to figure out how to get him home to Los Angeles. After all, he has an audition in a couple days and needs to be there. But every time he and Sophie put some distance between them, he suddenly “poofs” back near her.

all she wishes 2While you might think this is a story of finding true love, you would be wrong – in a way. It is Sophie who discovers that special person in herself. Drake, the flighty, peppy, young actor is completely opposite of Sophie who is an introvert, quiet, and basically unhappy with her life. The two end up learning a lot from each other, and Sophie finally comes out of her shell and discovers how to enjoy life again.

All She Wishes is a magical Valentine’s Day movie for teens. I’ll bet when you go to a store and see the picture frames you’ll have a new appreciation for the people in the pictures.
all she wishes 3Calum Worthy co-stars in the teen TV series Austin & Ally and has been acting professionally for almost 15 years. In 2010 he won the Leo Award for “Best Performance in a youth or Children’s Program or Series” for Stormworld as well as the Young Artist Award for “Best Performance in a TV Series by a Leading Young Actor.” He has been nominated and for several other awards. This guy has a long career in front of him. Lexi Giovagnoli is known for the 2014 film Varsity Blood. She was recently seen in the 2014 holiday TV movie 12 Dog Days Till Christmas. And Julia Duffy caught viewers’ attention when she co-starred in the hit series Newhart. She has been a staple on the small screen appearing in Designing Women, The Mommies, and guesting on countless other shows.

All She Wishes is available on Digital and On Demand beginning January 20 on Amazon, AT&T, Charter, Google Play iTunes, Vimeo, VUDU, and Vubiquity.
