‘Aspen Extreme’

The 1993 film Aspen Extreme is now available on Blu-ray. This is a dramatic story of two best friends who expand their horizons and experience new places, people, and adventures.

T.J. (Paul Gross) works at the Ford motor company building trucks in Detroit. His best friend Dexter (Peter Berg) works at the local ski resort. The two are the best skiers in the area, but when it comes to mountains, nothing beats the Intermountain West and the famous ski resorts in Utah and Colorado. They decide to quit their jobs and head out to Colorado to become skiing instructors. They decide on Aspen. After all, it is the playground of the rich and famous.

After tryouts, they both manage to secure positions as instructors. They meet the local DJ Robin (Teri Polo), a sweet, down-to-earth local. Then they meet Bryce Kellogg (Finola Hughes), a rich socialite who sets her sights on T.J. She lures him into her world and remakes his wardrobe and his style.

Through it all, the best friends stick together, but Bryce’s hold on T.J. puts a strain on their relationship. Dexter turns to drugs and soon their friendship is pulled too far.

At the heart of the story is the friendship of T.J. and Dexter who have left their hometown of Detroit and are lured into the extreme life of Aspen society as well as extreme skiing. They don’t have mountains like this back in Michigan!

There are plenty of skiing scenes with aerials and definitely a lot of moguls, but the skiing is secondary to the story of the two friends.

Trevor Eve, William Russ, Martin Kemp, and William McNamara costar and real-life ski champion
Andy Mill plays himself as the M.C. of the local races.

Unfortunately there are no bonus features on this disc.

Aspen Extreme is rated PG-13 for some language, drug content, and nudity. It was filmed on location in Aspen and Detroit.

‘The Secret Life of Pets 2’

The loveable pets from the original 2016 film return with more fun and frolicking than ever. In the first film viewers were introduced to Max, Duke, Mel, Gidget, Snowball, Sweetpea, Norman, Pops, and several other household pets. This sequel brings them all back, along with some new characters, with just as much wackiness as before.

Max is content with his family. No kids are around to jump on him or pull his tail. But when a baby enters their household, things change. Max and Duke discover little baby Liam is not a bad kid. As a matter of fact, Max takes on the job of protecting this little fellow.

There are several stories going on in this one movie. First is the story of Max and Duke who adore the little kid. Then when the entire family takes a trip to a farm, Max leaves his beloved toy in the care of Gidget who vows to take good care of it while he is away. But the toy winds up in an apartment filled with cats, so Gidget must learn how to be a cat in order to reclaim the toy.

In the meantime, Max and Duke are learning about life on a farm. In the country dogs do not sleep inside. They are relegated to the outside and the farm dog Rooster helps Max lose his fear of, well, everything. While on the farm, Max learns how to be brave.

Back in the city, the rest of the gang help Gidget recover Max’s toy, however they are also on another mission. That is to save a sweet and timid white tiger from a mean trainer. They decide to get the tiger away from the circus and find him a new home where his life will not be in danger.

So, with all of these stories going on simultaneously, there are plenty of fun-filled furry antics at every turn. But besides the adorable movie, the Blu-ray is filled with plenty of bonus features.

There are two mini-movies: one with “Super Gidget” who must save her beloved Max, and one with the minions as they try to earn badges at scout camp. There is a “making of” feature about the mini-movies too.

Viewers learn how to draw some of the characters from the film as well as learn how to make their own flipbook. Perhaps you will see a budding animator emerge in your family with these features.

A closer look at the characters brings new insight into the film. There is also a featurette about how to throw a party for your pet, including how to make party hats, popsicles, and capes. Your pet(s) will have a great time.Deleted scenes and a few other bonuses round out the Blu-ray edition that includes a Blu-ray disc, a DVD, and a digital code. The movie is also available on a single DVD as well as a 4K edition with additional bonuses.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 is just as entertaining as the original film. It is rated PG for action and some rude humor.

‘Couples Therapy’ premieres on Showtime

Just when I was dreading the upcoming loss of my psychoanalytic lollapalooza, namely The Affair, Showtime has an ace up their sleeve. A new documentary series, Couples Therapy, celebrates and showcases that it is possible to find common ground with someone who sees the world quite differently than we do. It’s not a relationship drama per se, but it certainly whets my unquenchable appetite for my favorite pastime – psychoanalyzing everything and everybody.

Couples Therapy chronicles four couples engaged in therapy with a therapist/psychoanalyst for the duration of 20 weeks. Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg, who brought us the award-winning 2016 film Weiner, had wrestled with questions for quite some time; Is it possible to capture what’s so extraordinary about therapy? Is it possible for people to be open, raw, and real while filming it? Kriegman grew up “being exposed to the language of therapy and hearing stories of breakthroughs and transformations that took place in therapy.” His parents – yes, you’ve guessed it! Therapists.

Kriegman, in our phone interview, pointed out that the film Weiner, which followed former New York Congressman Anthony Weiner to his ultimate demise, inspired them to finally jump into this docu-series. “What’s going on in relationships is always way more complicated than it appears and it’s way more difficult to judge than you might think. So after having an experience with the film about Anthony Weiner, we were excited to delve deeper into that truth and that dynamic between people and see if there’s a way to really get a chance to experience relationships from being inside.”

Casting a very wide net through all the channels imaginable, Couples Therapy found Orna Guralnik, PsyD. “Orna is a true believer in the power and value of therapeutic process. She is brilliant, skillful, and caring,” raved Kriegman about his kindred spirit in terms of the mission and the vision of the series. The nature of a couples therapist is unique; like walking a tightrope, you have to remain absolutely balanced between two opposing spouses. Dr. Guralnik’s dilemma and struggles are expressed beautifully in conversations with her clinical advisor, Virginia Goldner, PhD. You’ll definitely feel like a fly on the wall because neither her clients nor the general public are privy to their candid discussions.

Out of 1,000 applicants, four couples survived the rigorous casting processes: Annie & Mau, married 23 years, Elaine & DeSean, 11 years, Evelyn & Alan, 6 years, and Lauren & Sarah, 2 years. The first three heterosexual couples had contemplated and discussed separation. They had one thing in common, though; they came to see if Dr. Guralnik can fix the problem spouse so that they can go back to their ‘normal, happy-ish’ lives. Ah, if only it’s that easy…It takes two to tango, folks!

The biggest issue of modern marriage is we are expecting too much of our marriage without investing enough time and effort into our relationships to make these high expectations remotely attainable. Have you noticed we now expect our spouses to attend to our professional, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs? We have become more reliant on our partners to achieve our self-esteem, self-discovery, self-actualization, and self-everything! These tasks used to be handed over to therapists, doctors, life coaches, colleagues, friends, and families. Utterly impossible for one person to be every professions and everybody under the sun! In other words, we put way too much on each other’s plates and eventually break the marriage.

Marriage. Couples therapy. Divorce. Been there, done that. Getting a divorce was the most traumatic event in my entire life and I’ll never put myself through that wringer again. Although I believe Dr. Guralnik could have saved my marriage with her deep compassion for couples (the show suggests she is a divorcée herself), this fascinating docu-series reminded me that I need to stay single and happy for the rest of my life. I’m just too busy taking care of myself.

Couples Therapy premieres Friday, September 6, 2019 on Showtime and new episodes will air weekly for the next 8 weeks. However, all nine episodes will be available on September 6 for on-demand streaming, via the Showtime and Showtime ANYTIME apps.

‘Curious George: Royal Monkey’ on DVD

That loveable little monkey returns in an all-new movie. Curious George has been a beloved character for generations and this new movie shows off his adorableness and sense of fun. Little mischievous George and the stuffy royal monkey Feilipe accidentally trade places in Curious George: Royal Monkey.

When the royal family of Simiana visits the museum in which Ted (aka The Man in the Yellow Hat) works, they accidentally leave with George instead of their royal monkey. George accompanies them thinking he is going to Castleland, a royalty-themed theme park to get swept up in the royal fun of being royalty. But George soon discovers the problem. He has accidentally taken the place of their royal monkey Felipe.

In the meantime, Felipe is in the hands of Ted who decides to teach his ill-mannered monkey some manners. But Felipe is already well bred.

With Felipe in the U.S. and George in Simiana, things get topsy turvy. But in true George fashion, he brings some spunk and fun to the palace, and especially to Princess Isabel. This little girl is not pleased with her lot in life. She wants to experience some fun, but that is not the royal way. That is until little George enters the scene.

And snooty Felipe learns how to loosen up and have some fun while in the care of Ted.

When Ted finally learns that he doesn’t have George but rather the royal monkey, things make sense to him. After all, it would take a lot longer than a day to teach George all the table manners that Felipe has. So he sets off to Simiana with Felipe to switch the monkeys.

The accidental switcheroo manages to help the royal family regain the fun of life which was lost years ago, and it re-enforces the true bond and love between Ted and George.

The DVD has no bonus features however it does come with two sheets of stickers. The movie is fun, with all the entertainment we have come to expect from Curious George. There is plenty of music and a wonderful story for all ages. Curious George: Royal Monkey is the forth Curious George movie. The film is rated G.

Nickelodeon’s new show ‘Middle School Moguls’

Nickelodeon’s new show Middle School Moguls consists of four half-hour CG-animated specials following four new friends who are starting their own companies while attending school. Talk about ambitious!

Mogul Academy helps bring out the ambitions and capabilities within the students. Each of the four specials looks at the academy from the “moguls–in–training.” There is Valeria, who wants to inventor sports gear, Winnie, an aspiring chef for pets, Celeste, a techie, and Yuna, an up and coming fashion designer. They face challenges and learn to work to overcome what gets in their way.

Jane Lynch plays the Headmaster of the Mogul Academy and Tim Gunn voices the fashion department head in the school.

Middle School Moguls is the brainchild of the Heitkamp sisters, who hatched the idea when Jenae was working as a school counselor in Los Angeles inner-city schools. “I was working full-time as a school counselor and interacted with many girls of various demographics,” remembers Jenae Heitkamp.  “It was eye-opening to see what toys and media the girls were passionate about. When they liked something, they really liked something and they’d wear it on their clothes, backpacks, lunchboxes, etc. So, I really saw that girls had this big connection to characters.”

“At the time, I was getting my MBA, and was heavily involved in entrepreneurship,” Gina Heitkamp adds.  “We had this lightbulb moment.  We had always loved making businesses together as kids and decided that we could make fun, relatable characters who also inspired kids to become the boss.”

This series might give your child the encouragement he or she needs to pursue their true interests. Middle School Moguls premiers Sunday, September 8, 2019 on Nickelodeon.

D23 Expo 2019 Roundup

If you didn’t make it to this year’s D23 Expo, you missed a lot. As always, this event that takes place every other year at the Anaheim Convention Center  and 2019 marked it’s tenth anniversary. That means five Expos for the ultimate Disney fans.

So, here are some highlights of what happened this year, August 2019, at the D23 Expo.

Disney Legends

Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney for the past 14 years, kicked off the festivities with the induction of twelve new “Disney Legends.” These honorees are from all areas including designers, actors, voice talents, behind-the-scenes talent, and more. Basically, these are the people that are the bare bones of the company. Some are well known, others are just known by their work. “The Disney Legends Award is the highest honor we can bestow; it’s a recognition of talent, a celebration of achievement, and an expression of profound gratitude to the remarkable men and women who have made an indelible mark on our company and our creative legacy,” said Bob Iger. “This year’s honorees have earned a place in our hearts and our history for their significant contributions in film, television, and our theme parks around the world.”

  • Wing Chao, planner, designer, and architectural designer for Disney Parks Worldwide.
  • Robert Downey Jr., actor who brought to life Marvel’s Tony Stark, aka Iron Man. Downey Jr. said playing Iron Man was “a great gift.”
  • Jon Favreau, Director of Iron Man and many live-action Disney films. Favreau told the audience that Walt Disney “was the master,” and he was happy to be part of the Disney family.
  • James Earl Jones, the voice of Darth Vader and Mufasa.
  • Bette Midler, one of the stars of the iconic Halloween classic “Hocus Pocus.”
  • Kenny Ortega, award winning choreographer and director.
  • Barnette Ricci, best known for creating “Fastasmic.”
  • Robin Roberts, of “Good Morning America.”
  • Diane Sawyer – an ABC news anchor and journalist. Ms. Sawyer remembers her first Disney experience, which was watching Cinderella! She said to the audience, “May your dreams come true.”
  • Ming-Na Wen, actor and voice of Mulan. Ming-Na said, “I have hit every bucket list thanks to Disney.”
  • Hans Zimmer – composer and musician.
  • Christina Aguilera, of “The All-New Mickey Mouse Club” and actor and singer. She said she “may be the ultimate Disney fan.”

The D23 Expo is filled with all kinds of things to do, see, buy, and experience. The panels are extensive and give the attendees all kinds of information about the past, behind the scenes, and even some glimpses into the future.

Disney Panels

One session, “Being the Art of Disney Costuming,” was all about collecting items for the Disney Archives. As panelist and author Jeff Kurtti stated, the costumes are “not just clothes.” The panelists described the iconic outfits worn by many of the characters throughout the history of the Disney films. Their job in collecting the items for the archives was intense and each outfit was photo documented for a unique book, “The Art of Disney Costuming: Heroes, Villains, and Spaces Between.” The book actually sold out during the Expo but is available from Amazon.

Another interesting session highlighted the 50thanniversary of The Haunted Mansion. This attraction at Disneyland is iconic and timeless. Many of the illusions were demonstrated by an “illusioneer,” which is an illusionist and an Imagineer. Disney collects the best and the brightest in every field and the amazing visuals in The Haunted Mansion is only one of the ways in which their talents are portrayed. And let’s face it, this is an attraction that has become synonymous with Disneyland. It’s a must-do when it comes to Halloween time!

In the beginning Disneyland consisted of Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Adventurland, Frontierland, and Main Streeet USA. These days the new additions to the parks are more immersive. The session “Immersive Worlds: Bringing Stories to Life in Disney Parks” highlighted how the Imagineers and designers not only create new lands but these new lands are completely immersive for all guests. Once a guest enters Pandora in Walt Disney World, he or she is transported to another world. The same goes for Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. These are not only simplistic undertakings, they take years to plan and create. They are, as the title of the session says, “immersive.” And Treasure Cove in Shanghai Disneyland was an enormous undertaking to create a world in another country.  Aulani, the Disneyland resort in Hawaii also immerses guests into the Hawaiian culture. It’s not your typical Hawaiian resort. It is a step back into Hawaii of old.

Disney Shopping

There is no shortage of things to buy at the Expo. Many items are exclusive to the Expo. This year there were a few standouts:

  • Celebrating Donald Duck’s 85thbirthday was an orange plush Donald that comes in a container resembling an orange juice can. Do you remember the old Donald Duck orange juice?
  • The Dapper Dans have been a main part of Disneyland for decades. There is a Dapper Dans POP figurine set as well as an adorable plush set with Pluto, Mickey, Donald, and Goofy dressed in the iconic Dapper Dans striped shirts.
  • For Toy Story fans a fun black-and-white plush collection of the old time toys (Woody, Jessie, and Bullseye) come in boxes reminiscent of an old TV set. This is adorable for collectors.
  • The new logo for EPCOT was unveiled and there were plenty of clothing and accessories for the attendees to get the first items with this new, stylized logo.
  • And celebrating The Lion King’s 25th anniversary was an adorable plush Rafiki presenting baby Simba to the land.

These are just a few standout items out of the many options available at the Expo.

Exhibits

Exhibits were everywhere and one in particular included parts of attractions that do not exist any more. For old-timers we all remember the sky buckets. Those transported guests on the skyway from one land to another high above the ground, giving an extraordinary view of the park.  And since A Bug’s Land has been removed, there was Heimlich from the train ride in the land as well as a Francis car from Francis’ Ladybug Boogie (I loved that ride).

That is only a tiny glimpse of what was available at D23 Expo 2019. The next Expo will be in 2021 so mark your calendars and don’t miss it. It’s for the ultimate Disney fan. Just remember to wear comfortable shoes, have plenty of patience, and be prepared for a lot of fun.

‘Jumping out of the frying pan into the fire’ has to stop! ‘The Affair’ final season returns on Showtime

For four seasons, The Affair examined the aftermath of Noah’s (Dominic West) affair with Alison (Ruth Wilson) and the ripple effects felt among their spouses, Helen (Maura Tierney) and Cole (Joshua Jackson), respectively, and families. In Season 4, the members of the star-crossed quartet were all involved in new relationships, yet it was business as usual in the new normal. In Episode 406, however, a few hostile therapy sessions, earthquakes, sunny days, and – voilà! -enlightenment out of the blue. Abruptly transformed Helen gave Alison insight into how not to fall victim to a self-fulfilling prophecy. Noah and Helen commiserated for their losses (some kind of bereavement fellowship?) and seemed to have reconciled with each other in the finale episode. And Helen’s mysterious smirk in the very last scene – as if it were the series finale…Not so fast!

The Affair’s fifth and final season once again finds Noah and Helen trying to control everything from Whitney’s (Julia Goldani Telles) upcoming wedding to Helen’s tryst with a movie star Sasha Mann (Claes Bang). The show promises to reveal the characters finding out “how everything does really fall apart in the end, but somewhere in that wreckage, the seeds of change finally sprout.”

The final season also adds a P.O.V. of thirty-something Joanie (Anna Paquin), Alison and Cole’s daughter, in a series of flashforwards jumping roughly 20 years ahead. Don’t be alarmed when you see Joanie all grown up with existential crisis looming darkly above her. In order to avoid her husband and two daughters, she takes on a coastal engineering project in Montauk wanting to find out what really happened to her mother.

Last season, Alison finally realized that healing doesn’t just happen; you have to make it happen by changing your role and narrative. She was about to break the vicious cycle when her life was taken. On the other hand, Cole went on a walkabout and found out he did not want to give up on Alison. To his (and my) regret, he didn’t get to confess his undying love for her! Although they are much younger than Noah and Helen, they were on the verge of or a few steps into self-discovery. Their traumatic past informed them to explore their emotional baggage bleeding over into a new relationship. I also think they knew something has to be done. If you don’t have a vision however vague it might be, you’re stuck in what you know. And the only thing you know is what you’ve already seen and experienced growing up.

On the other hand, Noah and Helen float through life aimlessly. I don’t know what Helen wants out of her privileged and entitled life. I don’t have a clue what she wants to be when she grows up. The poor little rich girl saw a therapist right after she moved to Los Angeles, but she insisted she had put the past behind her and was in total denial of her own baggage and demons. Healing, forgiveness, and enlightenment are the last thing on her mind. If you’ve forgiven each other and are happy with yourself, you won’t engage in the dumper-dumpee drama. This brings back to my astonishment when Helen gave guidance to distraught Alison; stop being a victim, change the narrative, play a different character, and start thinking differently before it’s too late. Did Helen express her feelings of guilt and self-condemnation because she hadn’t carried out any advice given to her? Or was she just parroting what the New Age therapist had told her?

Noah, of course, suffers from arrested psychological development, specifically due to the traumatic mother-son relationship in his adolescence. He assisted in his mother’s suicide, remember? His question to his therapist “can a cheater be a great accomplished man at the same time?” is very telling. Noah is a narcissistic, insecure man-child! He could be a misogynist as well. Since neither of them examined their past, they are their circumstances. They both ran away from unbearable parents. Noah found a way to achieve an upper-class lifestyle he had craved all his life. The “it girl” Helen married a ‘safe choice’; the ultimate salt into Noah’s wound. In other words, their lives have been one ‘jumping out of the frying pan into the fire’ after another. Their lifelong habit has to stop!

Socrates preached that if we refuse to question ourselves and the world, we will act without reason because we cannot distinguish between good actions and bad actions. The good life is one in which we make both ourselves and those around us happier and better off, but the only way to pursue that life is to sit still, learn to feel, dig deep, and find out what we inherited from our parents. It’s a lot of hard work, but without self-knowledge, you’re doomed to repeat what you know.

The Affair returns Sunday, August 25, 2019 on Showtime one last time.

‘On Becoming a God in Central Florida’ taps into our own desperation and exhaustion in the Trump-era zeitgeist

Kirsten Dunst plays Krystal Stubbs, a minimum wage water park employee who figuratively loses her husband to the cult of free enterprise in On Becoming a God in Central Florida. This dark comedy follows Krystal’s relentless pursuit of the American Dream within and without the multi-billion dollar pyramid scheme, Founders America Merchandise (FAM).

“There’s so much rage within Krystal that I feel like I don’t necessarily always get to express in characters,” said Dunst at a press conference early August. Having given birth last year, she channeled her utter exhaustion into her character. “Krystal’s working so hard. She’s so tired. You just kind of put everything you have into it and be the most emotionally vulnerable you can so that you connect with your audience.”

Travis Stubbs (Alexander Skarsgård) quits his steady sales job and works day and night to climb the ranks of FAM. After his unfortunate death, Krystal quickly finds out that Travis had spent much more than he actually made. Bombarded with bills and debts, she has no choice but to pick up the pieces for her baby.

When FAM’s loyal and rabid follower Cody (Théodore Pellerin) inherits Krystal as one of his downlines, she develops a tangled relationship with him to get deep into this be-your-own-boss trap. She cons, schemes, blackmails, and manipulates to break free of the clutches of FAM. Little does she know, her scheme to take down the cult leader Obie Garbeau II (Ted Levine) would end up preying on her precious friends.

Robert Funke and Matt Lutsky, co-creators of On Becoming a God in Central Florida, did an intensive research on cults and decided to expose how their brainwashing and predatory practice ruin the most precious relationships. It’s about time somebody exposes the true nature of pyramid schemes/cults that exploit insecure and vulnerable people.

“There was something kind of moving and sad about the whole thing,” admitted Dunst about getting teary-eyed while practicing a puppet dance in Episode 2. Krystal tries so hard!! So do many decent hard-working people here and now. We are no better off than these Floridians were almost thirty years ago. Funke believes that “this show really lives in the world of people just trying to be happy in their daily lives, and they’re being preyed on.”

Although Krystal’s journey takes place in a small Orlando-adjacent town in 1992, On Becoming a God in Central Florida certainly taps into our own desperation and exhaustion to stay afloat and sane in the Trump-era zeitgeist. Not only amoral one-percenters but also self-serving criminals run this country for their own gain while ‘law-abiding citizens’ are punished because we do not believe in winning at all cost. Whether it’s a bully next door or in the White House, no matter how hard we try, we just cannot bring them to justice.

“I realize it’s all right the world is crazy as long as I make my little corner of the world sane,” said my role model Diane Lockhart (The Good Fight Season 2). Her wisdom was uplifting enough to last a while, but I’m afraid I’d lost the last piece of my sanity sometime early this year. I am exhausted fighting the evil in every corner of my life. My worst self is short-tempered, anxious, and gets controlling about stupid things. Watching Krystal’s crusade against the predators might be just what the doctor ordered for my desperation, rage, and exhaustion.

On Becoming a God in Central Florida premieres Sunday, August 25 on Showtime.

Colorful, funny and poignant – ’Why Women Kill’ is really about self-discovery

Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry opened a press conference in LA by describing the origin of his new streaming series on CBS All Access. “I had an idea that I’d been carrying around for years about a housewife in the 1960s who finds out her husband’s cheating. And instead of telling him that she knows, she befriends his mistress and that starts her on a journey of self-discovery.” Cherry, however, added two more women in the 1980s and 2010s in the mix. Why Women Kill follows three married women living in the same Pasadena mansion in three separate decades. Their marriages are tested by betrayal and infidelity. Cherry also promised to “bring it all together in the final episode in a really glorious, surprising way that I’m so excited for everyone to see because we find a really fascinating way to connect these three characters.”

Beth Ann (Ginnifer Goodwin), a stereotypical homemaker à la Donna Reed, met Rob (Sam Jaeger) in high school. Rob, an aerospace engineer, reveals right off the bat that ‘there’s nothing sexier than a girl who wants to take care of you.’ Translation? He was looking for a glorified maid and she won a provider/protector. They seem to have it all, but Beth Ann finds out that Rob has been cheating on her with a young waitress. Rather than confronting him, Beth Ann decides to work harder to be a good wife in order to keep it together. She thinks there is something wrong with her, of course. Mind you, this is what the 60s society dictated and expected wives to do. Mistress? No big deal! After all, in any chauvinistic society, having an affair or two was considered ‘a status symbol’ or ‘a side effect of affluence.’

Simone (Lucy Liu) is a brittle socialite and businesswoman. She is a nouveau-riche social climber à la Alexis Carrington and stops at nothing to retain a mirage of well-to-do perfect lifestyle. Simone finds out that her third husband, Karl (Jack Davenport), is gay. Simone wants him to ‘suffer in a one bedroom apartment next to the airport.’ Everything the couple does is melodramatic, but the facade of being rich and perfect and having everything in its right place is critical to them. Her next project? To have an enviable divorce after her daughter’s wedding!! Go figure! Apparently Simone hasn’t learned her lessons yet.

Taylor (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) is a feminist lawyer à la Gloria Allred. It’s all about her career and success. Her husband, Eli (Reid Scott), is a struggling screenwriter and Taylor wears the pants in this open marriage. However, when Taylor invites one of her hookups, Jade (Alexandra Daddario), to stay with them for the weekend, their delicately crafted ‘house of cards’ begins to collapse. Although Jade claims to be bisexual, she fits Eli’s mold of a perfect wife.

While watching the first two episodes, I re-lived my parents’ dysfunctional marriage. I totally related to Beth Ann’s exasperation, frustration, and desperation since I am a product of a couple like Beth Ann and Rob. The conversation between them about ‘Who will I be without you?’ is extremely poignant; I’m sure it never occurred to my mother that there could be a life outside her husband. Unless you are Lady Mary (Downton Abbey), women had no choice but to get married for stability and security. It used to be a socio-economic survival strategy for most women. My mother stayed in her miserable marriage because she would have been penniless and homeless if she were to divorce my father.

For Beth Ann, her marriage is a lifetime employment that is vitally important for her survival. Simone and Taylor, on the other hand, treat their marriages as one of their life accessories they can pick and choose because they are financially independent. Cherry might be comparing apples and oranges here, but the takeaway message is loud and clear to me. Marriage is a lot of work, and death is cheaper than divorce. If you can afford to be on your own, why bother to tie the knot? It goes to show you how the times in which we live shape our beliefs, behavior, and expectations. Oprah’s certainly got the right idea!

Why Women Kill premieres August 15 on CBS All Access and every Thursdays a new episode will be rolled out for the next 9 weeks.
