A look at ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an all-new adventure returning us to the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling.

Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne stars in the central role of wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander, under the direction of David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” blockbusters.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.

The film marks the screenwriting debut of J.K. Rowling, whose beloved Harry Potter books were adapted into the top-grossing film franchise of all time. Her script was inspired by the Hogwarts textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, written by her character Newt Scamander.

The film reunites a number of people from the “Harry Potter” features, including producers David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram.

Warner Bros. Pictures has slated Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them for worldwide release in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX on November 18, 2016.

Adventures in Babysitting on DVD

adventures
The Disney Channel TV movie Adventures in Babysitting comes home on DVD. The bonus on the disc is a blooper reel and there is a free magnetic picture frame included in the DVD box.

The story is about two very different girls who join together for one night of adventure and chaos. Jenny (Sabrina Carpenter) is a straight-laced, type-A personality girl who takes her babysitting responsibilities seriously. Lola (Sofia Carson) is a free spirit with no penchant for responsibility. After their phones get accidentally switched, Lola responds to a babysitting job in Jenny’s absence. All she wants is to make extra money and thinks this is an easy way to do it. What she discovers is that babysitting is far from easy. While Jenny is babysitting for one family, Lola is “babysitting” for another, but without much success.

Lola is a complete disaster as a babysitter. After one of the boys under her care sneaks out the window to go to a concert in the city, Lola and Jenny, along with the other kids under their charge, take off after him. The whole bunch encounters a night full of danger and confusion.

While Jenny is trying her best to keep all the kids together and bring them home safe and sound, Lola is soaking up all the excitement, however she soon discovers that she needs to take this seriously. While Lola is having a good time, Jenny is worried about her reputation as well as the safety of the kids. These two are very different girls.

Once everyone is together, their next task is to get home before the parents. But how can they do that when the SUV they “borrowed” from one of the mothers was impounded? Now they need to get the money for the impound lot and also get back home to the suburbs before the parents. It’s one thing after another as the whole gang traipses through the city.

When they manage to get the money (which in an ironic twist unwittingly comes from one of the parents), they now must get back home and clean up the SUV and even the house, which is a complete mess thanks to Lola’s prior irresponsibility.

The outcome of the night of adventure has a positive effect on the kids and even the babysitters. Lola learns about responsibility and Jenny learns not to be so wound up. Throughout the film there are references to the 1987 iconic film of the same name.

Playing the eclectic bunch of kids are Mallory James as a very young fashionista who wears her mother’s diamond earrings that night, Nikki Hahn as a shy teen, Max Gecowets as the boy who sneaks out of the house, Jet Jurgensmeyer as the junior chef, and Madison Horcher as the tomboy roller skater and roller derby fan.

The final song, “Wild Side,” is sung by Disney Channel stars Carpenter and Carson.

Adventures in Babysitting is rated G for the whole family.

‘No Man Left Behind’ on NatGeo

TheRealBlackHawkDown_NoManLeftBehind_59_preview
This new series on NatGeo takes viewers behind the scenes of some very dangerous events. The premier episode, “The Real Black Hawk Down,” is nothing short of extraordinary.

Through reenactments and first person accounts, the story of the events in Somalia in 1993 is dramatic and interesting. Somali militia controlled Mogadishu. What was to be a simple snatch and grab assignment with the Army Rangers and Delta Force dropping into the city and capturing two Somali leaders, turned out to be a terrible episode in history.

This is the story that inspired the book and subsequent movie, however seeing the reenactments along with the first person accounts of those who were there that horrific day is more shocking than any Hollywood film. This show reunites two of the soldiers and one pilot, who encountered more than they bargained for when they undertook this mission.

While no reenactment can be as realistic as the true events, the descriptions from the men make this as real as possible. Viewers hear their stories and their emotions.

TheRealBlackHawkDown_NoManLeftBehind_28_preview
When they entered the city mobs of people and barrages of gunfire met them and they were quickly under attack at every turn. Their force quickly diminished as the number of those injured and killed piled up. And once the first helicopter was shot down, the mission quickly turned from a snatch and grab to a search and recover. After all, the creed is ‘leave no one behind.’

Then the second helicopter was shot down and as the visuals unfold on screen, viewers hear just exactly was going through the pilot’s mind as he encountered torture and was facing imminent death.

What comes across in this documentary is the heroism of all the men, even though they didn’t feel like heroes then or now. The incident has been well documented, however hearing their thoughts now as they recount the events is what sets this account apart from all others.

No Man Left Behind: The Real Black Hawk Down is an intense and interesting chapter in American military history. It premiers on NatGeo June 28, 2016.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Talks ‘Central Intelligence’ and HBO’s ‘Ballers’

CI
Talk about role reversals, comedian Kevin Hart plays straight man to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in Central Intelligence adding a new spin to the often-overworked buddy genre. Playing against his action hero image, Johnson has the brains and brawn needed to portray lethal CIA operative Bob Stone, but there’s a sweet, vulnerable edge that is still festering from the relentless bullying he endured during his high school years.

On the flip side, Hart’s character was “big man on campus,” but now, 20 years later he’s settled into a daily grind as an accountant and misses those so-called glory days. Then they cross paths again at their high school reunion and Hart’s character Calvin gets way in over his head, with the prescribed number of stunts, fights, downright hilarious moments, and just maybe a new perspective on life.

Forty-four year old Johnson admits he didn’t suffer the same plight as his onscreen alter ego. He recalls, “I wasn’t bullied in high school, but there were two incidences in junior high when I thought I was going to be fighting one guy, but I was jumped by a couple of guys. The best thing I had to realize is that I had to stand up for myself after a kid bullied me all summer. I hit that kid so hard. I jacked him in his face and then ran home so fast, I ran out of my shoes.

“My mom wanted to know where my shoes were. When I confessed, she said, ‘Maybe go find him and work it out.’ The moral of her story was that you’re going to get in a situation, but don’t you ever run from somebody. Stand up for yourself.”

What Hart’s character comes away with is a realization and gratitude for all the good things that he’s achieved in his life. This feeling of good will extends far beyond the picture frame. Hart interjected, “I came into this movie knowing where DJ is in his career and I was excited to work with him. The fact that there were no egos and we approached those days 110 percent made it that much easier. I think it shows in the movie, that there’s a genuine happiness in these characters.”

Returning to the home screen, HBO’s series, Ballers launches its second season on Sunday, July 17. Scantily clad women, exotic cars, professional football – what’s not to like as Johnson reprises his role of Spencer Strasmore, a financial planner for the sports division of Anderson Financial in the behind-the-scenes NFL dramedy.

Aptly providing comic relief is his coke-addicted boss, Joe (Rob Corddry) who pressures him to “monetize” his gridiron teammates. Spencer’s nice-guy reputation within the community helps gain the needed trust of current and former players.

Found on the potential roster of clients are the short fused wide receiver, Ricky Jerret (John David Washington (Denzel’s son), a former lineman Charles Green (Omar Benson Miller), who works for one of the area’s largest car dealer, and rookie defense tackle Vernon Littlefield (Donavan W. Carter), who is getting a long overdue lesson in eating crow.

The series’ debut season lined up an impressive collection of genuine athletes like Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz, Steelers Pro Bowler Antonio Brown, and Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson. The sophomore season promised the same caliber of special guests.

Popping painkillers like breath mints, Spencer ignores a leftover injury from his playing days that is affecting his neurological function. In addressing the repercussions of one too many concussions, Ballers refuses to gloss over real issues that are plaguing the league today.

Another is the legal and financial woes facing players, who’ve signed contracts upwards of $100 million for five years, and recklessly end up broke. Despite all the superficial trappings of success Spenser, often finds himself in those same dire straits.

Ballers mixes and matches a few elements from two previously successful HBO franchises – The Sopranos and Entourage, which also credited Mark Wahlberg and Steve Levinson as executive producers. As for the former, Spencer mirrors Tony Soprano, an authoritative figure and all knowing sage, who manipulates situations and people to get his way even if those circumstances seem a tad unethical. And like Entourage, there’s plenty of male bonding, allegiance, and flunkies looking for a free meal ticket.

Johnson embraces Strasmore so seamlessly because he shared a similar dream. The former WWE champion, who will be seen in the next two sequels of The Fast and the Furious elaborated, “The life of Spencer Strasmore was a life I wanted. When I first stepped on the University of Miami campus at 18, I had no money and we struggled for a long time, but my Number One goal was to make it to the NFL just so I could buy my parents their first house. I never lived in a house until I was 28 years old. Up to that point we always lived in efficiencies and apartments.”

Those dreams of gridiron glory got sidelined by numerous injuries – five knee surgeries, a bad back injury, and complete reconstruction of his shoulder. By 22, it looked like those dreams would never come true. Looking at his international success today, what is his reaction? “I think people would say Holy S—t! I’m very, very grateful. I’ve got a lot of good people around me like my partner, Dany Garcia (his wife, who he divorced in 2007), who commit themselves to our overall success, whether it’s the production company Seven Bucks, which was the amount of money I had in my pocket back in 1995, or whether it’s the movie career or other things we want to do.

“I always say, you could strip it all away – the lights, Hollywood, the glitz, glamour, the cars, the money. It will always come down to the hard work and commitment you’re willing to put in. So I got a lot of people around who are willing to work just as hard as I am, and believe me, I push their assess.”

Although Johnson has more than half a dozen projects in the works, there’s one that’s especially close to his heart – the documentary Rock & A hard Place for HBO. It focuses on a special military-type boot camp for juveniles as part of the Dade County Correctional Facility outside Miami. While there’s no specific release date, Johnson is aiming for September or October, coinciding with a number of different film festivals.

“When I was in the Miami area I asked the drill instructors, ‘Would you mind me coming to speak to these kids?’ And I gotta tell you, when I walked in this place, the energy hit me. They are called cadets, not prisoners,” he related, an edge of sincerity and caring is conveyed in his voice.

“I basically told these kids, ‘Listen, you guys are going to have an opportunity to get out. I was once sitting where you’re at. There was an immediate connection. What I didn’t share is that my family was evicted from our apartment in Hawaii and we were forced to leave Hawaii. It would up being the greatest blessing in disguise, because at that time I was getting in a lot of trouble.

“I already had multiple arrests under my belt from doing a lot of things that I shouldn’t have been doing. I’m really lucky that I didn’t wind up in prison. Certainly I was on that track if I had stayed there in Hawaii,” he confessed.

“The rate of recidivism in the United States is somewhere in the 70s. The rate of recidivism coming out of that facility is nine percent, a fact that blew us away,” he concluded.

‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’ on Combo Pack

greekwedding2
The sequel to the hit 2002 movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding is now available on Combo Pack. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 reunites the entire cast from the original film in a story that has the entire gang preparing for another big wedding.

Toula (Nia Vardalos) and Ian (John Corbett) are living a happy life with their teenage daughter Paris (Elena Kampouris). However Paris is not so happy. She is a typical teen who wants to spread her wings but her parents are overprotective and she feels her entire Greek family is smothering her.

That is only part of this story. The wedding part comes in when Toula’s parents Gus (Michael Constantine) and Maria (Lainie Kazan) discover they are not legally married. While Gus wants to get married immediately, Maria waits for a proper proposal, and even after that she still has her doubts about marrying the man with whom she has spent the last several decades.

Toula always wants to fix everything in her family and dedicates her life to them and especially to her daughter. Ian feels cast aside at times. After all, living in this big Greek family is daunting and overwhelming. But he loves them and especially his wife and daughter.

Vardalos wrote this film and gathered the entire cast together again for another romantic comedy. Even her real life husband, Ian Gomez, returns as Ian Miller’s good friend. And Andrea Martin is just as pushy as ever as Aunt Voula.

While this is a good attempt at a sequel, it falls short of the fun and entertainment of the original, which was also written by Vardalos.

Bonus features on the disc include a gag reel and a “making of” featurette. The cast discusses reuniting for this sequel and the fun they had on the original and this film. What is amazing is that the whole cast from 2002 agreed to return and they all have a cute storyline, even though some of them (like Ian’s parents) are small.

If you loved the first film, you might not enjoy this one as much. The first had more comedy and entertainment but there are still some funny parts to this movie. It’s fun to see the characters again. Perhaps there will be a third film in this franchise. It’s up to Vardalos. Does she have another story to tell? We’ll see in the future. Maybe someone else in her family will get married? Joey Fatone’s Angelo character has some surprises in store for viewers.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is rated PG-13 for some suggestive material.

‘American Girl: Lea to the Rescue’ on Combo Pack and DVD

lea
Maggie Elizabeth Jones stars in the new American Girl movie, American Girl: Lea to the Rescue. Jones plays Lea Clark, a feisty, strong-minded ten year-old with a great imagination and a penchant for adventure.

Lea adores her older brother Zac (Connor Dowds) and is jealous of his new girlfriend Paula (Laysla De Oliveira). They both work in Brazil. When Zac confides in Lea that he is hot on the trail of poachers, she is excited. But when he goes missing, Lea and her mother (Hallie Todd), head down to Brazil to find him.

While her mother is waiting for her husband to meet them in Brazil, she is working with the police. Lea feels helpless just sitting in the apartment so she enlists Paula to help track down Zac. She uses his notebook to search for clues and when they lead her to the Amazon, she runs into the Rainforest with Paula on her trail.

The two discover a young Amazon girl, Aki (Storm Reid), who takes them to her tribe. It’s there where Lea learns that her grandmother had once saved the tribe. All the stories she had heard about her grandmother were true after all. The tribe agrees to help her find her brother.

Eventually, the clues lead them back to town where the poachers are holding Zac. Lea and Paula put their lives on the line to save Zac.

This little girl barely thinks twice about the danger she faces while searching for her brother. She is brave and spunky. And the story is about girl power.

Bonus features on the DVD include a look at how they filmed the movie. Also, Jones talks about how excited she is being an American Girl. Another bonus shows the animatronics of the adorable little sloth in the film.

The costume designer discusses the look of Lea. In the film she dresses like an American Girl doll and her clothes are duplicates of the American Girl clothes. They can be purchased for the doll and matching outfits for girls from the American Girl website or store.

American Girl: Lea to the Rescue is a great movie for girls. Lea (and Jones) show just how much girls can do. Jones performed the stunts herself, showing her tenacity and girl power of both her character and herself. Maggie Elizabeth Jones is adorable and talented – two traits that will definitely take her far in the business. She is a fun little actress to watch and her future looks bright.

NuFACE mini Product Review

First of all, let me say I am a skeptic when it comes to products that tout amazing results. So when NuFACE sent me their NuFACE mini facial toning device, I wasn’t expecting any great results. But I am very surprised and impressed with this device. It does work.

NuFACE mini has lived up to the hype. The first time I used it I saw results and after several days, others saw results on my face as well. The device says it is a 5 Minute Facelift. For those of us that could use a little fine-tuning and freshening, this fits the bill. And not only does it tone the facial muscles, it makes skin look healthier. Someone just told me my skin looks great, and it really does.

So how does this device work? It uses microcurrent technology, which is a soft wave. This stimulates the skin and the underlying muscles.

To use the NuFACE mini, when you first open the box charge the device for 16 hours. Then wash your face with an oil-free cleanser and make sure all makeup and creams have been removed from your face. Then lightly spread the Gel Primer to one cheek and jawline. Turn on the device and set it to the strength you want. There are three settings. I started with the highest and have not had any problems however some people might feel more comfortable starting at a lower setting. The next step is to place the device on your jawline and slowly glide it up to your ear. Then repeat that a little higher on your cheek and one more time just a little higher. Repeat these steps three times. The next step is the forehead area. All the instructions are provided in the box, however this link will show exactly how to use the NuFACE.

The company says the microcurrent technology began as a medical treatment for atrophied facial muscles. What I have found after using the unit for a little while is that my face looks tighter and my skin looks smoother and softer. And it is smooth to the touch. As I mentioned earlier, others have commented on the appearance of my skin so this device is definitely doing something. I have also noticed a slight lift in my forehead and cheek. As a matter of fact, the smile lines are noticeably reduced. And yes, I am surprised.

I wouldn’t say the NuFACE mini is a replacement for a facelift, if you are thinking about surgery, however if you just need a little freshening, I feel this is worth trying.

The NuFACE has been approved by the FDA for use on the face.
