Disneyland Resort Spring and Summer 2016

What’s in store at the Disneyland Resort as the weather warms up? Plenty. The Diamond Celebration continues at both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

In Disneyland, Super Hero HQ is the place to find out more about several Super Heroes and meet them in person.

Chewbacca and other Star Wars characters visit the Star Wars Launch Bay, which has a Star Wars – themed cantina and replicas from the film. And speaking of Star Wars, Space Mountain has been transformed into Hyperspace Mountain with a new soundtrack, putting guests right into an X-Wing battle.

Even more Star Wars fun is waiting for guests at ‘Star Tours – The Adventures Continue” with a journey aboard a Starspeeder 1000. And a short film, “Star Wars: Path of the Jedi,” shows several iconic scenes from the films with a new perspective. A reimagining of the “Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple” interactive show is hosted by Darth Vader.

The theme park is under construction for the new Star Wars land. While the Disneyland Railroad is currently closed (temporarily), there are other limited time experiences aboard the Columbia and Mark Twain Riverboat throughout the year, and the train stations host some interesting exhibits.

The “Paint the Night” parade is the updated “Main Street Electrical Parade” that was popular for so many years. This new – and bright – experience will continue through September 5, 2016, as will the amazing “Disneyland Forever” fireworks spectacular. This is worth the ticket to the park. It’s the most remarkable, inventive, and immersive display ever, with surprising projections in several locations in the park as the music plays and the fireworks erupt.

Disney California Adventure just celebrated its 15th anniversary. Yes, this park has been around for 15 years and has experienced some major changes throughout those years, including the addition of Cars Land, which is now the home of Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters. Guests will ride in 1950s style micro cars as they dance and move along to the music. Each car has its own special routine, so each experience is different.

A new musical based on the film Frozen, brings a live adaptation of the story to guests, with production numbers and all the fun of the movie. The production will premier in late Spring and play at the Hyperion Theater.

“World of Color – Celebrate! The Wonderful World of Walt Disney” continues to dazzle guests with spectacular lasers, colorful fountains, and the story and history of Walt Disney.

Dining in the two parks as been ramped up with themed food and new offerings. Plus the Disney characters join guests for several meals including the “Minnie & Friends Breakfast in the Park” at Plaza Inn in Disneyland and the Disney Princesses dine at Ariel’s Grotto in Disney California Adventure.

Southern California Residents get a treat with special pricing through May 19, 2016. For details, visit https://Disneyland.com/flex.

Disneyland is always changing. It is limited only in imagination, and let’s face it, the imaginations of the folks at Disney never fail to come up with new and exciting experiences. Marilyn Monroe sang, “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.” But girls aren’t the only ones who are enjoying this Diamond Celebration. And according to James Bond, “Diamonds are Forever.” But the Diamond Celebration is not. Enjoy 2016 at Disneyland Resort this spring and summer with all the fun and new experiences, and the limited run of the spectacular night shows.

New TV Spot for ‘The Jungle Book’

Directed by Jon Favreau, based on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s classic animated film, The Jungle Book is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba), who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera (voice of Ben Kingsley), and the free-spirited bear Baloo (voice of Bill Murray). The movie opens in theaters April 15 2016.

‘Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage’

dd
Fans of the movie Dirty Dancing are in for a treat with the stage version of this popular story. Currently at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood, California (February 2-21, 2016), Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage, the story of Baby and Johnny, is wowing audiences with just a slight variance from the film.

Usually a film is based on a Broadway play, but this time it is the other way around. Taking the story from a classic movie is a challenge, since audiences are intimately familiar with the film and all the nuances. Plus for the performers, playing iconic characters is a daunting task. But this stage version is entertaining and extremely clever.

There are a few minor alterations in the story, which takes place in the summer of 1963. First, the Civil Rights movement is more prevalent in this show in storyline and songs. And there are some slight changes with Baby’s parents’ roles. But on the whole the story follows the film with the same classic lines and moves, and definitely the memorable songs. Everyone remembers Baby saying, “I carried a watermelon” and Johnny’s iconic line, “Nobody puts Baby in a corner.”

What is also fun about this show are the staging and sets. How, you might wonder, will they perform the classic scene where Baby is practicing the dance lifts in the water? That is something you have to see for yourself. It is definitely a fun way to show this iconic scene.

People who are not familiar with the classic film will not get all the enjoyment out of this production as those who have seen the movie and know the plot, music, dance moves, and dialogue. This is a production is based on the film, and rightly so. The 1987 movie has been part of our lives for decades and made the careers of Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. Taking on the iconic roles of these two actors would challenge any performer, yet this production honors the characters and the film actors. Sure, it’s difficult to see someone else in these roles, however the stage version does them justice. This is a fun production and when you leave the theater you’ll be smiling and happy, and probably be humming the songs all the way home.

Tickets for Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage at the Pantages Theater are available at www.HollywoodPantages.com or www.Ticketmaster.com. To check out if this production is coming to your city, visit http://us.dirtydancingontour.com/tickets/tour-tickets/.

‘Ready Jet Go!’ Premiers on PBS Kids

RJGO_Launch_010
Ready Jet Go! is the newest series for 3-8 year-olds on PBS Kids. This animated show revolves around a group of neighborhood kids who have all kinds of adventures, thanks to the new kid on the block, Jet Propulsion. Jet is an alien from the planet Bortron 7, and he and his parents introduce the earth kids to some out-of-this-world exploits while the local kids teach their new neighbors about life on Earth. The Propulsion’s pet is a combination
cat/dog/raccoon/kangaroo/ rabbit named Sunspot who joins in the adventures.

Every episode includes some interesting question about space, like why isn’t Pluto still considered a planet? Each episode has two 11-minute animated stories as well as a live-action interstitial that educates viewers about various things like the Space Shuttle. Dr. Amy Mainzer, an astronomer with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, hosts these little interstitials.

Dr. Mainzer is excited about being part of this program and sparking kids’ interest in space and space exploration. Her own interest began when she was 6 and she has followed the stars ever since.

The show focuses on teamwork, and as Dr. Mainzer explained to the media, “Science is about teamwork. Science, there’s a kind of a misconception that it’s a lone scientist alone in a dark laboratory with a lab coat and big glasses and all that, and nothing could be further from the truth in my experience.”

RJGO_Launch_006Dr. Mainzer said, “Basically, you’re working with a big group of people that try to solve some really complicated problems, and you’re joking around and you’re laughing. And the sense of humor is what allows you to survive the tough times, right? So that’s, I think, one of the things we want to convey through the show, is that science is about teamwork, cooperation, working together, trying to solve hard things. And if you do that, you can actually find solutions to some really difficult problems.”

When she was a kid, Dr. Mainzer researched on her own and admitted, “This is the show that I would have wanted to have when I was a kid. This was the show I was looking for but couldn’t find. And it was really lucky that I had a very supportive mom. As I like to say, my mom knows probably more about liquid helium than a lot of physics graduate students do, because she was a great listener. And it just goes to show, you don’t have to have parents and family who are in the sciences, who are in engineering, to produce somebody who goes on to become a STEM professional science, technology, engineering, and math.”

Jet is a hero to earthlings Sean, who is really into science, and Sydney, who is into science fiction. And another earth girl is little Mindy, a 4-year-old who isn’t allowed to go farther than the neighbor’s backyard, so she has to stay on Earth when the others take off in the flying saucer. But she’s OK with that. However she might be in for some out-of-this-world adventures in the second season. (A little tidbit from the producer.)

And yes, while the kids work together they have fun too, and there are plenty of great songs in the show as well. Plus, each episode has a curriculum like the sun is at the center of our solar system, failure is not he opposite of success but is a stepping stone to success, there are different kinds of stars, etc.

Ready Jet Go! premiers Monday, February 15, 2016 on PBS. Blast off with this new series filled with fun characters and interesting facts. This is something parents will enjoy watching with their kids – and might learn something too!

‘Snowtime!’ – Movie Review

snow1
Snowtime! is a new animated film based on the live-action film La Guerre des Tuques (The Dog Who Stopped the War.) The premise of the story is that on their 2-week winter break from school, a group of kids (around 11 years old) would build a snow fort and there would be a war to capture it. At the end of the vacation, the group who occupied the fort wins the war.

First off, it might be disturbing to parents to have little kids playing at war. But as we all know, kids have snowball fights and build forts in the winter, so this is just an extension of that. What happens in the story is unsettling and will undoubtedly be very emotional for many viewers.

Spoiler Alert: One of the little boys has a friendly and loveable St. Bernard named Cleo. She goes to school with him, plays with him and his friends, and is part of their group. She is a slobbering little – ahem big – dog who enjoys being with the kids and they enjoy being with her. She is “the dog who stopped the war” in the story, but she does this by dying. Yes, this is an emotional and very disturbing part of the film.

snow3
The movie is about war and loss. One of the little boys had father who was killed in a war and he is still grieving and getting over that loss. Luke still feels the pain of his father’s death. And then when Piers’ dog Cleo is killed by the snow war, everyone else learns about grief and loss.

The film brings up the subject of war and consequences of actions. According to Producer Marie-Claude Beauchamp, “The character Piers is carrying the other big message: You have to overcome the loss of someone dear to you. Luke’s father died in war and Piers lost his dog. These are terrible and sad events but they are part of life and we show the audience that as sad as these events are, you grieve and you go on.” She said the third message in the film is friendship.

On the surface Snowtime! is a cute little story of kids and winter fun. But it quickly becomes a story with a message about war, consequences, grief, friendship, loss, and camaraderie. Yes, it is disturbing because of the death of Cleo. For many parents this is something to consider before taking your child to the theater. It is definitely a tearjerker and will affect kids – and adults. Cleo was my favorite character in the film and I was entertained by her antics and love of life.

Snowtime! is rated PG for mild thematic elements and rude humor. It opens in theaters February 19, 2016.

John Travolta Talks “American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson”

Premiere of FX's "The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" - Arrivals
“This story is one of the great American stories. This is the story about everything that obsesses the American people. This is the story about race, sex, violence, sports, Hollywood, and the only eyewitness is a dog,” states The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson author Jeffrey Toobin.

Toobin was referring to the arrest, the trial, and subsequent acquittal of the football icon in the murders of his wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. From the moment Simpson stepped into that white Ford Bronco until his acquittal in 1995, more than 100 million American viewers accompanied him on his journey.

Despite the passage of two decades, the issue of different perspectives on the justice system and charges of police brutality continue to dominate the headlines almost daily.

Premiering Tuesday, February 2, 2016, FX’s 10-episode limited series, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story won’t contemplate the defendant’s quilt or innocence, but instead offers some insight into why the jury had no other alternative then to reach their not-guilty verdict and what it meant to the people involved.

Heading the impressive cast is Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr. as Simpson, but much of the focus is directed at the lawyers on both sides of the courtroom, beginning with Courtney B. Vance as Simpson’s head counsel Johnnie Cochran, who uttered those immortal words over a pair of shrunken leather gloves, “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit.” That immortal phrase continues to be part of the legal community’s general lexicon.

The defense team also boasts John Travolta as Robert Shapiro, along with David Schwimmer as Robert Kardashian, sire of the notorious reality TV family, whose domain was business law. Among the opposing legal eagles is Sarah Paulson as Marcia Clark, Sterling K. Brown as Christopher Darden and Bruce Greenwood as then District Attorney Gil Garcetti. Presiding over the cast is Kenneth Choi as Judge Lance Ito.

Not everyone was immediately sold on the idea of participating. It took Travolta four months of coaxing to return to the small tube for the first time since his breakthrough run in Welcome Back Kotter which ended in 1979.

Travolta explained, “I wanted to be certain that it was going to be a multilayered message. As further assurance, executive producers Ryan Murphy and Nina Jacobson allowed me to have some participation in the production as insurance that the product would not be going in a sensationalist way, but in a way that communicated and enlightened. I never needed to assert that producer card, because everyone was so excellent in their departments.”

In inviting the audience to take the journey with him, Travolta built his character in layers. “Before I do any hair and makeup, I see if I can mimic the behavior. So after watching all the videos and reading a lot about him, I decided that I could do it with or without the makeup.

“TV is a visual media, so I like to invite the audience in and not have the story upstaged by my visuals like when I did Clinton.”

In that vein, how much did he add to duplicate Shapiro’s eyebrows? “If you studied him it was an along with a receding hairline. The combination was what sold it and he had a bigger lower lip. When I spoke, I spoke with a protrusion, and he had a little cadence to his voice. Those were the things I used.”

While Travolta never personally reached out to Shapiro, he exhibited an obvious empathy for the man. “Yes, it’s true. Especially, when he was demoted and Cochran moved up to head counsel. There’s a scene, that really happened, that I’m hoping they keep in, where he’s in the temple and he’s pissed. They ask him to hold the Torah. He’s going in with the pride Robert has, and he starts to hear groans from the people gathered. And you see him crumble. I fought to keep it in, because I wanted some semblance of his humanity. The only time he shows it is in his love for his wife and the implication that he loves his kids.”

Did Travolta’s character really believe his client was guilty? “While no one can be absolutely certain, I played it as if Shapiro always knew he did it, but was portraying what his client told him, but the whole time he wanted to settle. He wanted to get a good deal out of it,” he said.

Shapiro’s determination to settle leads to what Travolta labels “the most despicable scene I’ve ever played in my life. “I blackmailed Kardashian, because I wanted him to talk the group into settling. He won’t and I suddenly start to leverage him, make him think he might be put in jail for it. It’s awful what he does at that moment and I was so uncomfortable playing Shapiro, but it’s one of the best moments in the whole series, because you can’t believe what he’s doing,” Travolta interjected.

Acknowledging that The People v. O.J. Simpson has generated an unprecedented favorable buzz, Travolta, who hasn’t yet seen the finished project. He concluded, “The writing was so through as to what each character was thinking and the reception from the media so responsive, that I can now watch it and enjoy it and just let myself go.”

The Dyson Humidifier

Dyson has come out with a humidifier that does double duty. In the winter (and in the summer too) it humidifies the air to keep the correct humidity in your house and in the summer it is also an air cooler. Dry air is responsible for a variety of problems, including dry eyes, sore throats and noses, and even dry skin. By adding humidity back into your environment, these problems are lessened, making breathing easier and skin softer.

By using their patented “Air Multiplier” technology that is present in their fans and heaters, the Dyson Humidifier is safe for little kids. There are no places for tiny fingers to get caught and the design allows for even flow of the air. This is a quiet unit that comes with a remote control and the capability to run for 18 continuous hours.

In the winter the air inside homes is dry. With the windows shut and the heaters turned up, as well as fireplaces running, the humidity drops rapidly. Think about that. With dry air, nasal passages often feel sore and throats feel dry and scratchy. Water is the source of life and essential for our survival. It’s also essential in our air.

The Dyson Humidifier uses Ultraviolet Cleanse technology to clean the water and eliminate over 99.9% of bacteria from the water before it ejects it into the atmosphere. This in itself is an important element in this unit. Another benefit to the Dyson is that it measures the temperature and humidity in a room and adjusts itself to keep the optimum of each.

Where is the best place to keep your humidifier? The nursery is definitely important for babies. Putting the unit in the family room where the fireplace is is another great location. And sleeping with humid air will keep your nasal passages moist and lead to a better night’s sleep.

When I was little we had a humidifier we used only when someone in the house had a cold or the flu. This heated the air and spewed out steam. I can only imagine all the bacteria that it also spewed out. Then came the cool humidifiers, which we also used only for times of colds or flu. Today’s humidifiers are not only for those days, they are for all days, because science has found that moisture in the air benefits all areas of our bodies.

According to Popsugar.com, humidifiers help relieve sinusitis, speed up recovery from colds, asthma and allergies by keeping nasal passages lubricated, help prevent nosebleeds, alleviate snoring (think about that one!!), and moisturize skin.

Times have changed. Instead of using a humidifier only when we are sick, they are now an everyday product that benefits the entire body. Sure, they are great when someone is suffering from sinusitis, a cold, or the flu, but they also moisturize the inside and outside of your body all the time. And because this unit kills 99.9% of the bacteria that could escape into your environment, the Dyson is definitely a beneficial humidifier for the entire family. The bottom line is it’s quiet, has great health benefits, and safe to have around kids.

The Dyson AM10 Humidifier comes in three colors: white/silver, iron grey/blue, and nickel/black. They each list for $499.99 from Dyson.com.
