Will Smith & Dr. Bennet Omalu Talk ‘Concussion’

“I don’t think I’ll get invited to the Super Bowl next year,” quipped actor Will Smith, who stars in the Christmas Day opener Concussion. A scientific real-life sports thriller, it unfurls the story of Nigerian immigrant Dr. Bennet Omalu, who single-handedly took on one of America’s most powerful institutions – the National Football League.

A forensic pathologist for the Allegheny County Coroner’s Office in Pennsylvania, Dr. Omalu discovered irregularities in the brain of a beloved Pittsburg Steelers Hall of Famer, Mike Webster (played by a beefed up David Morse) that suggested a medical explanation for the significant number of NFL players, who succumbed to addictions, depression, and suicide at an early age. He labeled this affliction chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE and attributed it directly to the repetitive brain injuries incurred while playing football. It’s roughly estimated that over the course of an 18 season long career, a player sustains at least 70,000 blows to the brain.

Dr. Omalu published his findings in a medical journal. Even his boss warned, “You’re going to war with a corporation that owns a day of the week.” As predicted, the doctor’s actions were met with swift retaliation from NFL officials and over the ensuing decade both his reputation and credibility was ceaselessly challenged.

The turning point was a GQ article penned by Jeanne Marie Laskas titled “Game Brain,” which also was the catalyst for the filming of Concussion. A copy of that article landed in the hands of Giannia Scott, Ridley Scott’s wife, who immediately sensed the need to bring the life-and-death issue to the general public’s attention. Enlisting writer/director Peter Landman, the Scotts pitched it to Sony Pictures, who bought it on the spot.

Afterwards, Ridley phoned Smith and said, “I got a present for you.” Will responded to the offer, “What? That ain’t no damn present.” Nevertheless, he found the idea intriguing and climbed aboard.

Giannia Scott related during a press day at Manhattan’s Crosby Hotel, “Will is the best person we could have gotten. Will and Bennet are so similar in their hearts – they’re generous, loving and selfless and that’s what this story is about. It’s about a man so selfless that he gave everything up to get this message out and that’s what this movie is about.”

The 47-year-old actor, who previously played Muhammad Ali in Ali and Chris Gardner in The Pursuit of Happyness, described playing real life individuals as his “strong suit.” He continued, “It’s much more terrifying, however, with the end product, because you know that one day you’re going to end up in the movie theater with the person while they watch you butcher their life.

“But in terms of preparation, it’s great to be able to sit, talk and feel. I met his family, his friends, and we talked for hours. I rode in his car and listened to the music he listened to, all the different aspects.”

The aspect of Dr. Omalu’s life that emotionally effected Smith the most was watching the doctor perform an autopsy. He explained, his voice betraying a note of reverence, “It’s like he’s delivering souls from this world to the next, and you see just how seriously he takes that job, not just on a physical level, but on a spiritual level as well. It’s a spiritual responsibility to deliver these souls to the other side. I got hooked into the almost paradoxical nature of spirituality and science, it deeply opened the well spring to the inner truth of Bennet.”

So how well did Smith do portraying Dr. Omalu? It was nothing less than a four star review as Bennet commended his on screen alter ego, “As the movie began, I saw Will Smith play me. About 10 minutes later, I don’t know what happened to me. It turned from association to transformation. I became totally lost in the moment. I was embedded in the Omalu I saw on the scene.

“This is a testament to the job he did. It reminded me of my childhood perception of America as the land of perfection. And his acting in that moment epitomized perfection. His speech, the contortions of his face, the emotional composition of his acting, where he slammed his hand on the table, that was me.”

He wasn’t alone, as Bennet playfully added, “My wife said, ‘OMG, maybe I should now be answering to the name Mrs. Smith.” Compounding the accolades, Smith received a Golden Globe for Best Actor.

Rather than being against football, Dr. Omalu firmly believes that Concussion possesses an even greater message which validates an individual’s freedom of speech and the opportunity to pursue one’s dreams. The recipient of eight advanced degrees and board certifications exclaimed, “It’s only in America that you could have a Will Smith or a Bennet Omalu. It’s a fact. If I hadn’t come to this country I wouldn’t have had this opportunity. I wouldn’t have this education to contribute my part, just like everyone else.”

Rather than discredit the movie sight unseen, director Landsman encourages the NFL and its players to “embrace it, because this is a movie that isn’t trying to hurt them.” Taking a constructive step, Ridley Scott and Giannia have established the Bennet Omalu Foundation for the sole purpose of finding a cure for CTE.

Although the NFL didn’t have a role in the making of Concussion, the filmmakers did receive many phone calls from players requesting to see an advance screening. One of them was Chris Borland, the 49ners linebacker, who was pegged as Rookie of the Year. Only 23 years old and on the brink of become one of the greatest players on the gridiron, he opted to retire earlier this year reasoning that the rest of his life was more important than being a football player.

Landsman related Borland’s reaction, “We showed him the movie early on at the Sony lot. It was just him and he was shaking and crying. Chris commented that if he was going to make a movie “it would be this one.’ He was literally dissembling as he was watching this film because he felt like he was watching what he had just avoided.”

‘Born Free’ Limited Release Blu-Ray

BornFree
Born Free is a 1966 film that captured the hearts and love of audiences around the world. Joy Adamson, who lived with her husband George, a gamekeeper in Kenya, had one amazing adventure that is documented in this beloved story bases it on the best-selling book.

Joy (Virginia McKenna) loves animals and has, as a pet, an adorable little Rock Hyrax named Pati. She and George (Bill Travers) have enjoyed living in Africa where they can live free. His job is controlling animals that harm the lives and lifestyles of the humans in the area. So, yes, he does have to kill many animals. For the most part the humans and the animals live peacefully.

When he is on a mission to kill the man-killing lion that has been reported in the region, George is attacked by the lion’s mate and has to kill her too. Then he discovers the pair had three cubs. So what does he do? He brings them back home so Joy can take care of them until they are old enough to be sent to a zoo. She lovingly cares for the three cubs, but has a special relationship with the smallest, which she names Elsa.

When it comes time for the cubs to go to a zoo, Joy is depressed. She hates to say goodbye to Elsa. They are best friends. George makes a sudden decision to let Elsa stay with them, which pleases Joy and Elsa.

The new little “family” is happy and enjoys their life together. When they take a trip to the ocean, Elsa comes along. This scene with Elsa swimming for the first time and frolicking in the ocean is endearing.

But soon Elsa gets to the point where she needs the companionship of a male lion. Again they face the prospect of sending Elsa to a zoo. This is too difficult for Joy. She insists Elsa needs to be free. But how can that happen? Elsa has been raised in captivity. She is completely tame. To be free means she has to fend for herself. And she cannot.

So Joy and George take on a task that has never been attempted before. They teach Elsa how to be wild. This poor little lion goes through the ringer as they try to wean her off of them and let her adapt to the wild, and at times it looks like she will never be able to live in the wild. But then something changes, and Elsa is now able to live free, as she was meant to live.

This is the story of an adorable and loving lion who lived in two worlds. She is tame yet wild. Once she is firmly set in the animal world she is able to revisit her old “family” but she, and everyone, knows that she belongs in the wild.

The film was shot on location in Kenya. The incredible scenery is part of this spectacular film. Couple that with the beautiful soundtrack (which, on this Twilight Time release is on an isolated track), and the film is more than just the heartfelt story of Elsa.

Born Free won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and for Best Original Music Score, and was nominated for several other awards that year.

Born Free is rated PG for some wild animal action and brief language. Yes, there are sad moments and tearful ones, but it is a story that is timeless and memorable. The Twilight Time limited edition Blu-ray is 3,000 units. Order yours from their website.

‘Robo-Dog’ on DVD

robodog
Young Tyler (Michael Campion) is devoted to his dog Dog. Yep, that’s the name he gave his dog. Dog and Tyler have been together for as long as the little guy remembers. Dog is a part of a loving family. But when the beloved pet dies (yes, he does die), Tyler says he doesn’t want another dog. He just wants Dog back. So what does his father, an inventor, do? He builds a robot dog that looks exactly like Dog. Robo-Dog is a story of love and friendship.

Tyler’s dad Tom (Patrick Muldoon) is very inventive. His invention takes everyone by surprise, and Tyler is hesitant to give Robo-Dog the love that he gave to Dog. Robo-Dog is not like his old friend. This robotic version can do more, including talk. And he is fast and strong. The one thing he doesn’t know is how to behave like a real dog. That is something Tyler is tasked to do. He is supposed to teach Robo-Dog how to be more like a real dog.

Teaching a mechanical dog to be like a real dog has its ups and downs, literally.

When Tom’s former boss (Wallace Shawn) hears that Tom used his super battery to build the dog, he wants it back, even if he has to take the entire dog. Well, things happen along the way but the greedy man eventually gets his battery, however he has no idea how to use it. With the town in danger, it’s Robo-Dog to the rescue.

Along the way Tyler learns to love this new little pup. He thought he would never feel this way about another dog. After all, he and Dog were best friends. This story shows that time – and love from another pet – heals the wounds.

Olivia d’Abo stars as Tyler’s mother. This family is not your average family. They are simple and over-polite. And they are truly devoted to each other.

This is a movie for youngsters, as adults won’t find it as entertaining as kids will. It is cute to see this little dog talk and learn how to be more like a real dog.

Robo-Dog is not rated. Parents need to consider whether the death of Dog will be traumatic for their children. Otherwise, it is a cute little story of love and friendship.

‘Sisters’ – Movie Review

The Nest
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are sisters in this over-the-top look at two women who share the same bloodline but are very different. Sisters is a madcap adventure of love and bonding.

The Ellis sisters, Maura (Poehler) and Kate (Fey), grew up in Orlando with their parents (James Brolin and Dianne Wiest). Maura is a divorced nurse who likes to take care of everyone and everything. Kate is a screw-up who cannot hold a job or an apartment. Even her daughter can’t take the upheaval in her mother’s life and yearns for a nice, quiet life with her mom.

Film Title: Sisters
When the sisters are summoned back to Orlando to clear out their bedrooms because their parents moved into a retirement condo, Kate and Maura take a trip back to their childhood and start dredging up all their past adventures. While reading their school-age diaries, Maura realizes she was always intense and boring while Kate longs for the good old days and their famous “Ellis Island” parties they threw.

With the house almost empty, the sisters decide to throw one last bash and invite their old friends. What they realize is that everyone has moved on to adulthood and not eager to “let go” like they did when they were young. But leave it to Kate to shake things up and soon everyone is letting their hair and pants down. This party is a raunchy Animal House-type event with all that that entails, with minimal laughs.

SISTERS

According to Fey, “I’d been planning to produce this screenplay Paula [Pell] wrote for a long time, not knowing if I would be in it at all. Once the script started taking shape, I said I’d love to play Kate because I never get to play characters like her: a wild child who’s trying to get on the straight and narrow.”

Fey added, “Once I was into the role of Kate, we thought it would be fun to have Amy play the sister who’s more dutiful. Over the course of the film, Maura starts to cut loose. You get to see her finally go wild, which is, of course, what you want to see Amy do and what she’s so great at.”

“I jumped at the chance to play Tina’s sister on film,” Poehler said, “because we serve as chosen sisters for each other. We don’t have sisters in real life, but I’ve known Tina 20 years, and she’s the closest thing I have to one. It was exciting to get the chance to play that on screen.” There’s no doubt the two have a bond that is magic.

2451_FP_00291R_CROP Fey and Poehler are definitely two of the great comediennes of today and their chemistry is unmatched. Joining the cast are Maya Rudolph and John Leguizamo as some of the old friends, along with a host of other great actors. Perhaps the best scenes involve Brolin and Wiest whose onscreen time is limited. But they do manage to steal the show. By the way, these two also play the matriarch and patriarch of a different family on the TV series Life in Pieces.

What started out as a way to let go and enjoy a piece of the past ends up as a learning experience for everyone.

Ike Barinholtz plays James, a man who catches Maura’s eye and touches her heart, and John Cena plays Pazuzu, the drug dealer with a heart of gold.

The bottom line is that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are very funny women/actresses, and time has definitely been on the side of James Brolin who is just as adorable now as he was when he first began his career.

Sisters is rated R for crude sexual content and language throughout, and for drug use. It is this generation’s Animal House of antics, alcohol, sex, and drugs. Had they toned that part of it down a notch or two –or three – and focused more on the talents of Fey and Poehler in a different way, the film would be a great family movie, however due to the raunchiness it is a definite “R.”
