‘Transcendence’ by A.L. Waddington - Book Review
Category: Books and Music
Imagine living simultaneously in two centuries. And imagine being aware of both existences. That is the story of those “gifted” or “cursed” with E.V.E. Essence Voyager Era is an inherited phenomenon that allows those with the ability to live two parallel lives at the same time.
Sidney is the protagonist in Transcendence, the first book in “The Spirit Quest Series” by A. L. Waddington. Her previous series (“The EVE series”) introduced the characters and the EVE phenomenon. It might be helpful for readers to begin with that series, however it is not necessary in order to enjoy this new series.
Sidney is a medical student living with her fiancé Landon, who is also a med student. The year is 2019. When she sleeps, she is – for lack of a better word – transported to her other life in 1859 where she lives with her husband Kiefer on their large Boston estate. The Civil War is about to begin, and Sidney (she has the same name in both lives) knows what is going to happen. But she is powerless to do or say anything as she is “living” in this time.
Back in the nineteenth century women had no voice or power. Speaking her mind is something she can’t completely quell, but others in that time look down on women who are strong and intelligent.
So, Sidney maneuvers between both lives, completely invested in each one. Now add the fact that others in both lives also have the “gift” of EVE and they all know each other but have different relationships in each lifetime. Yes, it sounds confusing and at times it is, but nevertheless the story is compelling and the book is a page-turner.
The history the author brings out in the nineteenth century chapters has been well researched. This book might even compel readers to do their own research into the time and people of the Civil War era.
Each chapter is titled with the date so readers can easily decipher in which life Sidney is living at that time.
It sounds a bit confusing but it does come together once the reader is able to wrap his/her mind around the concept of EVE. And what an interesting concept it is. While some readers might think of it as a curse, the characters in the book like the ability to live in two very different times at the same time.
Sidney is a remarkable woman with great intelligence and a sensitivity that will resonate with readers.
A.L. Waddington has a great imagination and the ability to capture readers’ attentions through this fascinating story of life, love, family, relationships, and history. It is considered a teen/young adult book, however it is also a great read for adults who enjoy fantasy combined with history.
And pay attention to the wonderful cover art. It is mesmerizing.
