Santa’s Magic Toy Bag DVD

santasmagictoybagSanta’s Magic Toy Bag was produced in 1983 and hasn’t been seen on any home video format since it was shown on the Showtime Network. This is a fun little film created by Paul Fusco, the man behind the hit series Alf, which aired from 1986-1990.
This isn’t an animated movie. It is comprised of puppets. They sing and share a fun story about a misunderstood apprentice elf. Little Sherman wants to be an official elf, but finds apprenticing is much harder than he ever imagined.

Sherman is a disaster in the making. He makes a mess of everything he tries. Or does he? This little guy – whose best friend is a jack-in-the-box – feels out of place. He says he can’t win because he doesn’t fit in. Sherman gets transferred from every department he is assigned to – wrapping, making toys, the mailroom, and even the bakery. But Santa knows all Sherman needs is a little time and encouragement.
There are some fun songs in the film, and the message to viewers, via Sherman, is to believe in yourself. Sherman also finally believes in the magic of Christmas.

The DVD contains a sing-along as well as some cute little bloopers. There is also “Sherman’s Design Book” which illustrates the interesting and creative toy designs this little guy imagines. Sherman has a way of combining two things into one. He makes an elephantone (combination elephant and telephone), an electric kite (kite with electric fan), and more.

The movie is short – 30 minutes – but it is fun and filled with heart.

Santa’s Magic Toy Bag is not rated however it is appropriate for all ages.

Holiday Inn – Blu-ray B&W and Colorized

holidayinnThe newest edition of the classic movie Holiday Inn is something film lovers will cherish. Besides the wonderful movie, starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire, there are plenty of bonus features that give viewers a lot of insight about the actors, movie, and the new technology that was used to colorize this famous film.

Both the original black and white version of this 1942 classic and a new colorized version come on the same Blu-ray disc. Some hard-core movie buffs do not want to see their films colorized, but other viewers do. With this edition you get your choice. I truly enjoyed watching this movie in color. Having grown up seeing it in black and white every year at the holiday season, seeing it in color is a new experience. And it’s a pleasant one at that.

The story features Crosby and Astaire as Jim and Ted, song and dance men who split up when Jim (Crosby) decides to leave the entertainment business and retire to a farm in Connecticut. What he discovers is that life is boring on the farm so he turns it into an Inn, which is only open on holidays. That way he can work a few days a year and rest the remainder of the time. It’s a win-win situation for him.

He hires Linda Mason (Marjorie Reynolds) to co-star with him in the holiday shows. What he gets is more than just a co-star. There are plenty of laughs, sentimental moments, and a lot of singing and dancing throughout the film.

The movie is from an idea by Irving Berlin who wrote the songs. Every holiday has a different song, and the Christmas song is “White Christmas,” of course. If you thought the song came from the show White Christmas, you were wrong. It was penned for Holiday Inn. The filmmakers believed the Valentine’s Day song, “Be Careful, It’s My Heart,” would be the breakout song from the film, according to the PBS documentary Bing Crosby: Rediscovered. But it was “White Christmas” that stole the hearts of viewers and has become a beloved song worldwide.

Anytime while watching the movie, press the Pop-Up Menu button on your remote control to see some bonus features. These are all interesting. In “A Couple of Song and Dance Men,” Fred Astaire’s daughter Ava and film historian Ken Barnes discuss the relationship between Crosby and Astaire, and the two men’s backgrounds and careers.

Another bonus, “All-Singing All-Dancing” looks at the history of song and dance in film.

“Colorizing a Classic” shows how the film was colorized using the latest technology. This was a very intricate process and took six weeks to complete. It’s amazing to see how they went frame by frame, colorized the foreground characters first then used a different technique to automatically colorize the background. This is something tech buffs will enjoy watching. It’s creative and interesting to see. And the research they did to get the colors perfect as well as hunting down any information about the actual wardrobe is astounding. For instance, the Christmas dress worn by Reynolds was thought to be red, but on further investigation they discovered it was gold, so they changed it to gold to make it reflect the actual dress worn when the film was produced. Viewers see the gold beaded dress in all its gorgeous glitz on the screen.

Besides the two versions of the film and all the bonus features, this edition comes with a Digital HD download code.

Holiday Inn is the quintessential holiday film. It’s warm and fuzzy, with a lot of great music and now, with the colorized version, plenty of sparkles and colors.

Death Comes to Pemberley on Masterpiece Mystery

pemberleyJane Austen is a beloved author whose novels and characters have stood the test of time. There have been several feature films recently acknowledging Austen’s effects on society, namely The Jane Austen Book Club (2007) and Austenland (2013). Even the 1998 film You’ve Got Mail paid homage to the novel Pride and Prejudice, as Meg Ryan’s character was so taken with that story and claims to read it every year. What is it about Austen’s characters that resonate in readers? Only Jane Austen fans can answer that. But you don’t have to be an Austen fan to enjoy the newest homage to the great novelist, although Austen fans will certainly be more appreciative of the characters. Death Comes to Pemberley is a two-part series on PBS’ Masterpiece Mystery and will capture the hearts and minds of viewers from the first scene.

The story was penned by PD James as a continuation of Austen’s famed novel Pride and Prejudice. Austen lived from 1775-1817, and PD (Phyllis Dorthea) James was born in 1920, and wrote Death Comes to Pemberley in 2011, quite a long time after Pride and Prejudice, which was first published in 1813. But James knew readers were hungry for more of the beloved Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy.

This film stars Anna Maxwell Martin as Elizabeth Bennett Darcy and Matthew Rhys as Fitzwilliam Darcy. Matthew Goode takes the role of George Wickham, Jenna Coleman is Lydia Bennett Wickham, Eleanor Tomlinson is Georgiana Darcy, and Tom Ward is Colonel Fitzwilliam. And, if you are familiar with Pride and Prejudice, there are Bidwells and other characters in this film that had a place in the novel. This movie takes place six years after the end of Pride and Prejudice. For all you Austen lovers who have longed to find out what happened to Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy, this is the story you’ve been waiting for.

Elizabeth and Darcy have a young energetic son and the family is preparing Pemberley for their big ball. But on the eve of the event a tragedy occurs. Lydia Wickham appears and is distraught. She claims her husband is dead. So, Darcy and several men go out looking for the man. What they find is that Wickham is very much alive but his friend, Captain Denny (Tom Canton), is dead. All the clues lead back to Wickham and he is put on trial for the murder.

During the story bits and pieces of the original novel appear, so those viewers who have not read it or have forgotten some elements will be filled in. And, if you feel more comfortable checking out a synopsis of Pride and Prejudice online before watching this movie, that’s perfectly fine but not necessary.

The characters and story are addicting. To be honest, I watched the entire three hours in one afternoon. I couldn’t stop. I was mesmerized by the entire film. The relationships between the characters are interesting and the outcome of the murder trial is intense. Because Wickham is married to Darcy’s sister-in-law, he is considered Darcy’s brother, so having a murderer in the family would taint the reputation of the Darcy’s. And what about Georgiana Darcy? Her heart belongs to someone other than the man whom Darcy would like her betrothed. Elizabeth wants Georgiana to marry for love, not money and status, but can she convince her husband?

The film is filled with all the intensity and enjoyment of the Austen novels. The characters are just as they were on the pages. This is truly a film that will be beloved by fans of Austen and fans of period pieces.

Death Comes to Pemberley premiers Sunday, October 26, 2014 on PBS, with the finale premiering November 2, 2014.

The Good Witch’s Wonder on Hallmark Channel

goodwitchCatherine Bell is back as Cassie Nightingale in this newest edition of The Good Witch movies. This time in The Good Witch’s Wonder, Cassie is busy with many things around town and still manages to help everyone with her special brand of magic.

For normal people, what is about to happen would be overwhelming, but for Cassie, well, she has her special way of staying calm and knowing that whatever happens is meant to be.

With Cassie’s term as Mayor of Middleton over, the new mayor, Martha Tinsdale (Catherine Disher), has big plans for the city. Namely, she wants a botanical garden complete with a picturesque fountain. But she has to find a way to pay for it. And Cassie’s stepson Brandon (Matthew Knight) returns to town and informs everyone that he and his fiancé Tara (Ashley Leggat) are going to be married in just a few days, instead of a few months. Brandon’s sister Lori (Hannah Endicott-Douglas) is worried she won’t have a date for her brother’s wedding. Martha is starting to meddle in the police department to the chagrin of the chief, Cassie’s husband Jake (Chris Potter), and Jake’s father is concerned that his granddaughter Grace’s education is lacking. Now, add to the mix Audrey (Rachel Wilson), the new assistant Cassie hired at Bell, Book, and Candle, and you have the cast of characters in this newest Good Witch story.

Things are going pretty well, even though there is a lot of activity in town. Then, with all the preparations for the wedding, Cassie puts Audrey in charge of the items for Martha’s silent auction, which is supposed to raise the much-needed funds for the Botanical garden. That’s when Middleton gets turned upside down.

In the meantime, Cassie’s subtle words magically help everyone, including Lori, who has no idea that her future boyfriend is right in front of her. Those viewers who know Cassie Nightingale know she is filled with mystery and amazing wisdom.

With her special brand of charm and insight, Cassie manages to put everyone in the right place at the right time. And, as usual, Middleton comes out of all these events without a dent.

Catherine Bell is perfect as Cassie. She has played this role in all seven films in this popular franchise: The Good Witch (2008), The Good Witch’s Garden (2009), The Good Witch’s Gift (2010), The Good Witch’s Family (2011), The Good Witch’s Charm (2012), The Good Witch’s Destiny (2013), and The Good Witch’s Wonder (2014). Somehow, whenever Cassie is around, things always turn out all right.

This newest film in the franchise has all the charm, wonder, and magic as the others. And, even though viewers know with Cassie around everything will turn out all right, there is still something sweet and comfortable about watching the events play out on screen. Cassie’s subtleness is the key to everything.

And Cassie Nightingale will entertain fans of the films more than once a year. Beginning in February 2015, The Good Witch will be a weekly series starring Catherine Bell in the title role with Bailee Madison stepping in the part of Cassie’s daughter. There is a lot of fun, magic, and whimsy coming to weekly television very soon.

In the meantime, The Good Witch’s Wonder premiers Saturday, October 25, 2014 on Hallmark Channel.

Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon

supermenschMike Myers takes his first spin behind the camera directing this documentary about legendary Hollywood manager Shep Gordon. Gordon might not be a household name, but his clients are.

Shep Gordon is described as “the quintessential manager.” In the film Actor Michael Douglas says he is filled with “compassion.” Interviews with Douglas, Sylvester Stallone, Anne Murray, Tom Arnold, Alice Cooper and a host of other celebs as well as comments and insight from Gordon himself provide a complete picture of the life and times of this Hollywood icon.

Gordon had an interesting rise to fame. He majored in sociology then tried his hand, albeit for a very short time, at being a probation officer. He wanted to help kids. But that didn’t last and soon he was on his way to Hollywood where he accidentally met several (soon to be) giants in the entertainment industry. Janice Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, and Jim Morrison became best buds with Gordon, and he joined their sex, drugs, and rock and roll lifestyle.

Shep Gordon singlehandedly crafted Alice Cooper and he orchestrated PR stunts to raise international attention for the singer, who turned out to be his lifelong friend. “Family is important,” Gordon acknowledges, and his clients were, at the time, the closest thing to a family he had around him in California.

The techniques he used to propel public interest in his clients are amazing. Imagine gathering a group of A-list stars – which by the way included John Lennon – together so his new client Anne Murray could be photographed with them. This one photo basically launched the high-flying career of this Canadian singer.

Alice Cooper and Anne Murray? Who could be more opposite? It didn’t matter to Gordon. He made sure his clients were well cared for and had widespread publicity. That is the sign of a great manager.

“He is a protector,” states Sylvester Stallone. “He keeps the wolf from the door.”

True, this is not a film for everyone. It is, however, an interesting look at a man who made an impact in the entertainment industry. It was an official selection at many film festivals.
This is a documentary for adults only. It shows the excesses that were part of the Hollywood culture in the 1960s and 1970s and is not recommended for young viewers. Supermensch is rated R for language, some sexual references, nudity and drug use.
