The Boxtrolls Movie Review

1400.0900.fin.001._L.0184_CC.tiff

From the creators of ParaNorman and Coraline, The Boxtrolls is a movie filled with creativity and imagination. This is a sweet story with heart, but also has some pretty grim scenes.

So, what exactly are Boxtrolls? Simply put, they’re little critters who use boxes for clothes. They live underground in an amazing cavern and during the night they scavenge above for what humans throw away. One man’s trash is another man’s – or Boxtroll’s – treasure. These critters are crafty and can create a lot with so little.

The Boxtrolls, namely one named Fish, are raising a human baby whom they name Eggs. Eggs grows up as a Boxtroll and thinks he is one. No one tells him otherwise. Then, when he’s about 11 years old, things go badly for his “family.” Above ground the humans think the Boxtrolls are monsters and stole the baby. They think the Boxtrolls are evil and need to be exterminated. That is where a malicious, conniving man comes into play.

In the town of Cheesebridge humans who have done something exceptionally good get the honor of wearing white hats, and that is exactly what Boxtroll exterminator Snatcher wants. He and his team wear red hats, but he covets the white hats. So he makes a deal that if he exterminates all of the Boxtrolls, he will earn his white hat.

Winnie is an interesting little girl. She’s the same age as Eggs and has led a privileged life. Her imagination is one for the books. She has some rather strange obsessions, which all revolve around Boxtrolls. She also wants some of her father’s attention, which he rarely gives to her. Winnie meets Eggs and they work together to convince everyone that Snatcher is an evil man.

Director Graham Annable said, “Snatcher is despicable in that he is manipulating Cheesebridge into fearing and hunting Boxtrolls, …” Producer David Bleiman Ichioka describes Eggs as “a bit like Tarzan, raised by a community other than the human one, so the civilized world is one he just doesn’t have any conception of.”

Boxtrolls2What the story comes down to is that Eggs must save his friends and family, with a little help from Winnie. The messages in the film are many. We all have the ability to be better than we are. In the end the audience learns the true story of little Eggs and how he came to live with the Boxtrolls.

This is a cute movie, but if you’re looking for something completely warm and fuzzy, this isn’t that. It will be adored by many, but because of some of the gruesome scenes, is not recommended for everyone. There are some humorous parts however, and the names the Boxtrolls have are adorable. They match the boxes they wear: Fragile, Sweets, Shoe, Knickers, and more. They are really fun little characters who have feelings, are sensitive, are funny, and eat bugs. Yep, they eat bugs.

The Boxtrolls is rated PG for action, some peril, and mild rude humor.

David Tennant Talks About Gracepoint

GRACEPOINTLast year the series Broadchurch mesmerized viewers on BBC. Now FOX adapts that story for their new drama Gracepoint, with David Tennant taking on basically the same role as he did in the British series, which, by the way, has been renewed for a second season.

Gracepoint is a 10-part mystery event on the FOX network. It begins with the murder of a twelve-year-old boy in the quiet town of Gracepoint. The murder shocks the townsfolk and eventually pits neighbor against neighbor as suspicions about who killed the boy get out of control.

David Tennant recently spoke about the show to the Television Critics Association members, telling them that the writing is what really appeals to him. “You can mess up a good script, but you can’t make a bad script much better. So I’m just happy to go where the good writing is, which has been Broadchurch and now Gracepoint.

The actor explained that the two characters, the one in Broadchurch and the one in Gracepoint, are somewhat different. “They feel very different to me. Obviously, they both look like me,” he joked. “But they feel different because, well, for all sorts of reasons because of the circumstances of everyone around me. You’re playing opposite this extraordinary kind of Rolls-Royce of a cast. I’m also very fortunate to play with a Rolls-Royce of a cast back home (in the UK), but it’s a very different one on that [show] and creates a different set of circumstances to be within. It’s such an unusual situation. It’s quite hard to be entirely objective about it myself because, it’s the same character and yet it’s not. It’s the same but different, and it’s probably easier for objective observers to point out how they differ.”

Tennant went on to explain the relationships between his detective characters on the two series and the female detectives on the two shows are quite different. “The spine of the story is the same, and the spine of the two characters is the same, but there’s very different flesh on the bones, I think.”

gracepoint tennantThe actor acknowledged that the American version of the show would not have happened had the British version failed. But Broadchurch was so popular a second season is in the works, even though it was supposed to be only a one- season show.

“I’m too close to this to really be able to be objective about it other than I’m thrilled to be part of this cast telling this story, as I was in Britain.” There is a long history of British shows being adapted for American audiences, and some of them have been popular and others haven’t transitioned well to the USA viewers.

Gracepoint is an intriguing series with an eclectic cast of characters. As each episode unfolds, new questions arise and viewers learn more about each character. There are plenty of surprises throughout the series. This is a show that will have viewers discussing the storylines each week with their friends trying to dissect the characters and figure out what happened to the little boy. Everyone is a suspect. This is a strange little town and viewers will get sucked into all the drama going on there.

Gracepoint premiers Thursday, October 2, 2014 on FOX. Be prepared to be caught up in this drama for ten episodes. Once you start watching, you won’t want to stop.

Thunder and the House of Magic on DVD and Blu-ray

THOMCover_300dpiThunder and the House of Magic is a fun and humorous tale of one sweet little kitten. After being abandoned on the street by his family, the kitten does not know where to turn or what to do. He knows nothing of life on the street. Then he wanders into an old Victorian house where he eventually finds a new home and family.

The house is owned by Lawrence, an old magician who lives there with his rabbit named Jack and his mouse named Maggie. Lawrence names the kitten Thunder and makes him part of the family. Jack and Maggie have other ideas. They don’t want an interloper in the house and do everything they can to get him to leave, including threatening the poor little fellow.

Not only does Lawrence live with the two animals and a pair of lovebirds, but there are others in the family as well. He is a great magician and has several inanimate objects, which, well, are not inanimate any more. There is a gumball machine, a light bulb, a toy ballerina, a phone, a drum-playing monkey toy, a camera and many others that have been given life and feelings and the ability to move around. It’s these enchanted objects that create the fun of the film, while little Thunder tries his best to become part of the family and part of Lawrence’s magic act.

Due to an unfortunate accident, Lawrence winds up in the hospital and his nephew Daniel schemes to take control of his uncle’s possessions and life. Daniel gets power of attorney and puts the mansion up for sale while Lawrence is laid up in the hospital, unable to do anything for himself. But back at the house the rest of the “family” pulls together to keep prospective buyers from taking their home.

Whenever a buyer gets into the house, the objects “haunt” it and eventually no one wants to buy it. With weird things happening inside, who would want to buy a house like that? It’s up to Thunder and the gang to keep others out until Lawrence is well enough to come home. But Daniel’s evil ways put the entire family in danger.

It’s Thunder to the rescue, again and again, proving he is not only smart and reliable, but also part of the family. He loves everyone in the house and won’t let anyone hurt any of them.

With the gizmos and gadgets, as well as the animals, this is a cute and clever animated movie for the entire family. The magic inside the house is matched by the heartening story of this one little kitten who risks everything for his new family. Thunder is an endearing character.

The bonus features include several “making of” featurettes about the story and the animation.
Thunder and the House of Magic is not rated but it is for all ages. It does contain some mild cartoon violence.

Avalanche on Blu-ray

avalancheRock Hudson stars in the 1978 film Avalanche. This was one of Hudson’s last feature films. He passed away in 1985.

Avalanche joined the ranks of the disaster films of the decade, among them are The Poseidon Adventure (1972), The Towering Inferno (1974), Airport (1970), and Earthquake (1974).

In Avalanche, Hudson plays David Shelby, a New York developer who transforms a quiet Colorado mountain into a stunning winter wonderland. But he does so without any thought to what his actions might do to upset Mother Nature. The film takes place over a few days when sports figures and high-powered folks gather at the resort for the grand opening.

Mia Farrow co-stars as Shelby’s ex-wife with whom he desperately wants to reunite. Robert Forster is Nick Thorne, a man in tune with the mountain who warns Shelby of his reckless behavior.

The guests include plenty of flawed characters, and they’re all looking for a good time either on the slopes, the ice rink, or in the bar or, most importantly, the bedroom.

When an avalanche (I’m not giving away the plot…just read the title of the film!) buries the entire resort, it is a fight for survival to find anyone left alive.

The film relies on special effects, which are really quite amateurish by today’s standards. The falling snow is definitely fake and the avalanche itself is not what today’s movie goers expect. It’s pretty evident that Styrofoam was used to make the chunks of snow. Effects have come a long way since this film was produced, but at the time this is what audiences were used to.

The movie is hokey, to say the least. And the acting and effects are not top notch, by any means. Besides being a story about flawed people, it is a film about how people and their greed overtake common sense and the need to care for the land instead of using it for personal gain.

On this new Blu-ray edition, producer Roger Corman discusses how the film was made on a limited budget and how the television rights for it were bought even before the movie was filmed. He also discusses how the effects were disappointing and the avalanche snow looks blue, to his chagrin.

There is something interesting about watching this edition because it reminds us of how movies were produced on limited budgets decades ago. Today this movie would cost over ten times as much to make as it did in 1978. And it would probably be better. Nevertheless, at the time it entertained movie audiences.

I remember going to the theater when it was released and thinking it was a horrible movie, yet there was something about it that stuck in my mind and I really wanted to see the new Blu-ray edition. The movie hasn’t gotten better over time. But I am glad I saw it on Blu-ray. For a not-so-good movie, it’s fun (and funny) to watch, and the interview with Roger Corman puts it all into perspective.
Avalanche is rated PG. There are scenes of disaster, sex and nudity.

Easy-Reach Toaster Oven from Hamilton Beach

There’s not much new a company can do to a toaster oven. Or is there? Hamilton Beach has an “Easy-Reach” model, and it is definitely a step forward in the world of toaster ovens.

The roll-top door makes it easier to reach inside the oven to work with whatever you are baking, broiling, or toasting. The rack is large enough for four slices of regular sized bread or a 9-inch pizza. And the product is very attractive.

So, you might be thinking, why do you need a roll-top door? You might not, but it does come in handy for a variety of things, not the least of which is removing the contents from the oven. Besides this feature, the oven has a 30-minute timer and settings for baking, broiling, and toasting, as well as a baking pan and broiling rack. The rack can be placed on two different levels in the oven.

Okay, so now you’re thinking that this is a pretty cool idea, right? With easy access to the contents of the oven as well as easy cleaning, this is a nice little unit.

I have some great recipes that really benefit from the roll-top door. One is what I call, “cottage cheese toast.” This is something even kids enjoy.

Easy-Reach Toaster Oven 2To make “cottage cheese toast,” simply spread a layer of cottage cheese on a piece of bread. Then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Place the bread in the oven and broil until the cinnamon sugar has melted and the cottage cheese is hot. Remove the cottage cheese toast. Now here is where this Easy-Reach Toaster Oven comes in handy. With other toaster ovens this requires some maneuvering so the cottage cheese doesn’t spill over the bread. And believe me, I have had plenty of cottage cheese spill in my toaster ovens. With the roll-top door, it’s easy to retrieve the toast without any difficulties. And, during the heating process it’s simple to add more cinnamon or even test the temperature of the cottage cheese without having to remove the toast.

Try this recipe and your kids will thank you. It’s a great breakfast or after school snack. While I cannot take credit for inventing this delicacy, I can say it is something my family has enjoyed for many years.

The Hamilton Beach Easy-Reach Toaster Oven lists for $49.99.
