9/10: The Final Hours on Nat Geo

9-10-TheFinalHours_022The images of September 11, 2001 are burned into our minds. We think of the horrors of that day and all the lives that were lost in the terrorist attacks. But what about September 10th? 9/10: The Final Hours is an interesting documentary on National Geographic Channel that dissects the lives of people who were directly affected by the events – those who just missed being in the twin towers, those who innocently had contact with the terrorists, and those who were in the towers just hours before the attacks.

There are several stories that resonate during this documentary. There is the bar tender who just hours before the first plane flew into the WTC, conducted a mixology seminar and who had created specific drinks to commemorate the scenery from the top of the towers. There is the man who had spent the night of September 10 having dinner at The Windows on the World with his mother and sister, who worked at Canter Fitzgerald and who died the next day. Her effects contained the bill from the previous night’s dinner.

9-10-TheFinalHours_021

There is the night clerk from the hotel where two terrorists spent their last night. There are the airline personnel who interacted with the terrorists and the baggage manager who declined to place Mohammad Atta’s luggage on the plane because it was late getting to Boston from the departure city in Maine.

And then we hear about the artist who spent the night in the art studio in the tower because he worked late and didn’t want to miss his appointment the next day. Yes, he was one of those killed in the attack.9-10-TheFinalHours_025

These are people whose personal stories will remain with them the rest of their lives. They are poignant and heartening. The story of the last homily of the fire department’s priest who was killed the next day, the story of the Mayoral candidate who was running in the primary that was originally scheduled for September 11, the story of the NYU students who saw the events unfold from their dorm room, and more personal stories create the picture of the life of NYC just hours before it changed forever.

There are several heartening stories of people in the area the night before and the morning of the attacks. This documentary humanizes the stories and turns the events not into a story of terrorism, but a story of humanity.

9/10: The Final Hours premiers Sunday, September 7, 2014 on Nat Geo.

The Beatles and Me On Tour by Ivor Davis – Book Review

9780990371083_cov.inddRarely does the public get an inside look and an up close and personal experience with any rock group, let alone the Beatles. But Ivor Davis was basically embedded with the Fab Four during their first US tour in 1964.

“It’s my personal, inside story of the time—50 years ago this Summer—that I traveled for five weeks with the Beatles on their first North American tour,” explained the author. “I had total access to the Beatles, traveled with them on their private jet and also ghosted a column for George Harrison.” The Beatles and Me On Tour is his journey with the Beatles as they traveled throughout the country. His stories are focused on their tour both on stage and especially off.

Anyone who is a Beatles fan will enjoy learning some of the personal details of the group. We all know they partook quite liberally in drugs and alcohol, and Davis does not leave these events out of the history. There are little inside tidbits of John, Paul, George, and Ringo, and some very interesting recollections about their time in America.

Their meeting with Elvis is quite enlightening, both about the Brits and the King. In the beginning none of them were overly eager to be together, but once they started jamming, it was a night those who were there will never forget.

Davis also disclosed the fact that – for those of us who didn’t attend a Beatles concert in 1964 – the cost of a ticket was, well, by today’s standards, less than the tax would be on a ticket in 2014. And, the Beatles were only on stage for about a half hour. There wasn’t any joking, no give and take, or anything like we experience at concerts these days. The Beatles went on stage, played their songs, then left. The end.

During their trip to Dallas, John wanted to see where President Kennedy had been assassinated, but that didn’t happen. And speaking of Kennedy, when the Beatles landed in Indianapolis on September 3, they learned the security for them “was even tighter than when President Kennedy had come to the city one year earlier.” (p. 116).

Besides Elvis, the Beatles met several Hollywood celebs of the day, but no one really struck them. Well, except Peggy Lipton. It seems that Lipton and Paul had quite an intense little relationship for a very short time. And all four of them were engrossed with Bob Dylan.

Stories about garden parties PR functions, extravagant room service bills, driving limos on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and more make up this interesting look at a time long passed. The only way to learn about these events is from those who were there, and Ivor Davis was there. He lived it. And now he tells what happened, no holes barred.

The Whizpops Present “Sea Turtle”

The WhizpopsThe Whizpops debuted a new music video for their song, “Sea Turtle.” This colorful and flowing animated video, was created by Eric Kreidler (animator for The Bazillions).
“Sea Turtle” is just one of the educational songs from The Whizpops’ new album Sea Blue Sea.
As The Whizpops’ guitarist and kindergarten teacher Casey Schaefer notes,  “Our music fills a niche in the kindie music scene. Every song supports a concept in the elementary curriculum; we get ideas directly from kids and teachers.” He adds that Sea Blue Sea arrives at a time when the public’s interest in saving marine life is high and the President wants to create the world’s largest marine sanctuary in the Pacific Ocean.
Bandmate Kevin Cashman, who is a fifth grade teacher and first-time dad, says about The Whizpops’ educational songs: “We’re trying to pique a child’s interest in the natural world and share our enjoyment of learning about it with everyone.” Adds Kiely, father of two kids who work the merch tables at The Whizpops’ shows, “We’re just serious about having fun.”

The Secret of Santa Vittoria on Blu-ray

santavittoriaThis 1969 film was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Film Editing and Best Original Score. The music is delightful. The story is cute at times and has some very funny moments with Anthony Quinn, trying to save his town from the Germans. Actually, The Secret of Santa Vittoria is more about saving the town’s wine reserves than anything. And, of course, putting one over on the Germans.

The town of Santa Vittoria is a quiet one. Grape growing and wine making is the big business in this quaint Italian town. In 1943 when Mussolini was ousted, the people began celebrating the end of the Fascist. But soon they learn the Germans will be coming to take over their town, and take their wine. They have a million bottles of wine and in no way do they want them to go to the Germans.

With Mussolini gone, the leaders of the town want no part of what is coming. They proclaim a wine seller, Bombolini (Quinn) as the new mayor and leave him with all the responsibilities. He’s a worthless man and a drunk. But unknowingly, he has what it takes to save the wine and the town. “Things are never what they seem.”

By having the people form a human conveyer from the wine storage to hidden caves and tunnels in the mountain, they secretly move most of their wine bottles over a period of a couple days, and then hide them within the tunnels. No one will be able to locate them, unless someone in town talks!

Lo and behold, the Germans arrive and discover only 300,000 bottles of wine in the town’s reserves. For the time being they think that is all there is, until the SS arrives and informs them there should be a million bottles. But where are they?

“Brave men and good wine don’t last long.” Or do they?

While this wine cover-up is going on, there are personal relationship within the town that play out.

While this is not a fabulous film, it does have loyal admirers. It’s witty and the score by Ernest Gold makes it entertaining. The 139 minutes is a bit too long. Personally, I would have liked to see this run about 2 hours. The ending is wonderful, however. Putting one over on the Nazis in the waning years of World War II is satisfying, not only for the viewers, but also for the people of Santa Vittoria who did not like their town being occupied by tyrants.
The Secret of Santa Vittoria is rated PG-13 for some sexual content and language.
