Bedknobs and Broomsticks Special Edition Combo Pack

bedknobsFantasy, music, spells, and a dash of Disney magic combine in the 1971 film Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Angela Lansbury stars in this classic film that takes a different path than other Disney live action movies. It is set against the backdrop of World War II.

The time is August 1940 and the Nazis are bombing London. Children are being evacuated to the country for safety, and three siblings are assigned Miss Price (Lansbury) as their temporary guardian. She is a single woman living alone in a large house, so obviously she is called upon by the Civil Defense to do her part in the war effort and keep the children fed and housed. Carrie, Paul, and Charlie are good kids, who just happened to be a casualty of the war.

Unbeknownst to anyone, Miss Price is an apprentice witch, taking lessons from the Correspondence College of Witchcraft, under the direction of Emelius Black (David Tomlinson). She is a bumbling witch, to say the lease, however she is getting the hang of the spells and even riding the broomstick.

At first the children, especially Charlie, are not excited about being stuck in this house, until they accidentally discover Miss Price’s secret. Then Charlie attempts to blackmail her for better food and less baths in order to keep her secret. But soon the entire group is off on an exciting adventure to help Miss Price find the final part of a special spell that, she hopes, will aid in the war effort, once she learns how to use it.

Miss Price has put a spell on the bedknob so the brass bed turns into a magic transportation system, which takes them to London, then to the magic Isle of Naboombu where they interact with animated animals and have an interesting and unique visit. The first time live action was combined with animation was in the 1944 movie Anchors Aweigh when Gene Kelly danced with Jerry mouse. Then audiences were treated to more combination of humans dancing and interacting with animated characters in the 1964 classic Mary Poppins.

Once they all retrieve the final spell, there is more adventure waiting for them when the Nazi’s invade their village. Look for a cute scene where Lansbury dances with a pair of shoes.

The dark undertones of this movie could be disturbing to some viewers, but the fun of the magic saves the story.
Bonus features in this pack include a feature with the famed Sherman Brothers who wrote so many songs for Disney films, including Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks. They describe how this story was originally brought to them by Walt Disney who was in the process of trying to convince P.L. Travers to let him make her Mary Poppins story into a movie. Finally she relented so this film was put on the back burner for a while.

There are plenty of deleted and extended scenes and songs, a recording session with David Tomlinson (who incidentally played the father in Mary Poppins several years earlier), and an interesting feature about special effects. Today effects are done primarily with green screens and computers, but back when they made this film that technology hadn’t been invented yet. See how they made this film and how it is different from the moviemaking of today. Bedknobs and Broomsticks won an Academy Award for Best Special Visual Effects.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks Special Edition contains a Blu-ray, a DVD, and Digital HD copy. It’s rated G for all audiences.

The White Tower on DVD

whitetowerThe White Tower is a 1950 movie about people and their interactions, as well as their inner turmoil. The story takes place right after the World War II and is set in the Swiss Alps. Everything centers on Carla Alton (Villi), a woman who is intent on putting together a group to climb the infamous White Tower Mountain.

Years earlier Carla’s father, a famous mountaineer, attempted this climb and died on the mountain. No on has scaled this mountain and Carla wants to do it as an homage to her father. She is a driven woman. She knows she can get to the top to honor her father.

Putting together a team of climbers is not too easy. She enlists her father’s friends, Dr. Nicholas Radcliffe (Cedric Hardwicke) and Andreas (Oskar Homolka) who reluctantly agree. Joining them is Paul Delambre (Claude Rains), a French writer. And then Martin Ordway (Glenn Ford) and finally Mr. Hein (Lloyd Bridges) round out the climbing team. Each person has his or her own reason for making this treacherous climb.

During the climb, viewers see the true inner strength of each of the climbers. Are they there as a team or for themselves? Ordway is an American who was shot down during the war, not far from the mountain. He has no roots at the moment and seems to just be trying to discover himself and his future. Delambre is a frustrated writer who is trying to compose a book about the mountain. Hein is a former German soldier who still holds the Nazi superiority in his soul.

This is not a movie about mountain climbing. It is a movie about personalities, inner strength, and finding one’s place in life.

The White Tower is part of the Warner Archive Collection and can be ordered through their site at www.wbshop.com.

Sur.face Pro from BeautyBlender

This ingenious little item lets anyone become a makeup mixologist. Surface Pro is small, portable, and easy to use. It’s a handy item for anyone who uses makeup. There are six numbered wells, a spatula for blending, and a thumbhole to spin to let users access an individual well, as well as a palette on which you can customize your colors.

So, why is this a handy little unit? First of all, it allows users to blend foundations to create the perfect color for their skintone. Second, users can blend different eye cream shadows and lipstick shades for one-of-a-kind colors.

Those are the obvious uses for the Surface Pro. What else can you do? There are plenty of little tricks of the trade. For instance, have you thought of combining a lipstick color with a tiny bit of foundation to make a cream blush? Cream blushes look smoother than powder.

If you put Vaseline in the unit then add some powder shadow or blush you will have a custom lip tint. And speaking of lips, did you know that adding a drop of peppermint oil to lipgloss makes your lips look fuller? It’s instant plumping without the injections.
There are many more little tricks for makeup lovers, busy moms and business professionals. Personally, I have never thought of these before but there are some great tricks of the trade out there, and with the surface pro it’s now easy to take advantage of them.

The Surface Pro was designed to let users create their perfect foundation, however it does a lot more. This is a convenient way to also create customized lip, blush, and shadow colors. And don’t be afraid to combine oils, water, and other liquids to discover new and fun ways of using your makeup. After all, makeup costs a bundle so why not get the most out of it? Granted, this is not a product everyone will want, however if you’re busy or if you love to experiment and love makeup, this is for you. The Surface Pro lists for $40. Yes, that’s a lot, but for those who are really into makeup, it’s just a drop in the bucket.

mission blueMore than four years in the making, MISSION BLUE is legendary oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle’s eye-opening wake-up call to save the ocean. Directed by Fisher Stevens (“The Cove”) and Robert Nixon (“Gorillas in the Mist”), the film follows Dr. Earle on her global quest to protect the ocean — and the extraordinary marine life that call it home — from the powerful forces of pollution, overfishing and climate change. Dick Cavett’s Watergate on PBS

Secrets of the Dead: Dick Cavett’s WatergateExactly forty years to the date when Richard Nixon announced his resignation, PBS airs an interesting and educational, as well as oftentimes humorous, documentary on Watergate. At the time, Dick Cavett had a late night talk show, which was different from what we know today. His involved more conversations with intellectuals than with entertainers. Dick Cavett’s Watergate is a documentary focusing not only on the scandal and the president’s role, but also how Cavett’s show brought the scandal to TV audiences.

In the documentary, the Watergate affair is described as a plot that could be from a John LeCarre novel. It’s also described as “House of Cards on steroids.” As Senator Baker asked during the Senate Watergate hearings, “What did the president know and when did he know it?” According to the president, illegal acts weren’t wrong, but getting caught was. This documentary includes interviews with Woodward and Bernstein, the Washington Post writers who were responsible for keeping the scandal in the papers, and many others who were in the middle of the affair.

Recently, Dick Cavett met with members of the Television Critics Association to discuss the scandal and the documentary. “I’m very much aware that there are a lot more people uncomfortably young who don’t know whether [Watergate] refers to a scandal or a hotel or a novel or a porno film,” Cavett said. “And I know that some of them are eager to know. I’ve talked to a couple who are college‑age now who said, ‘I welcome this opportunity to get to know about it.’ ‘We had a president who should have gone to jail?’ And I said ‘yes.’ And I think that fact alone is dramatic enough to make it interesting to anybody.”

Even for those who lived through this episode of American history, the film is a reminder how amazing it all was.

“I think it was Gore Vidal who said on a show of mine, [Nixon] may in his way have been the most honest president we ever have had because he always told you exactly what was going on mostly by its opposite as in ‘I’m not a crook’ and ‘I’m not a quitter.’ As history shows, Nixon was a crook and ultimately a quitter.

Secrets of the Dead: Dick Cavett’s Watergate

The film also deals with President Ford’s pardon of his predecessor. “It would have taken four years to deal with Nixon and his trial. And it would have been [in the news] everyday.” Ford’s action helped heal the country faster than had he not pardoned Nixon, although at the time it was thought of by many as a raw deal.

As for Cavett’s role in the American drama, he interviewed the people involved and actually aired a show from the Senate Watergate Hearings room, talking to the senators who were involved in questioning the witnesses. “It seems almost obvious now to me that I did a lot more than I even was aware of,” Cavett acknowledged. “At the time, when I first heard the idea of doing a special on it, I thought do we have enough? Do we have enough for another hour and a half? So it’s just that made it really tough and took great skill on the part of people putting it together, because there was just so much juicy stuff to choose from.”

Because he kept the story alive on TV, Cavett was on Nixon’s list of people he wanted to bring down. Nixon was paranoid about everyone and especially those who opposed him. He even wanted to know if Cavett was Jewish, as his dislike of Jews was front and center. In the film Cavett explained that the Nixon administration punished people by putting the IRS on them. Sound familiar?

Dick Cavett’s Watergate is fascinating. Don’t pass this up. It’s not only a history lesson, but also an American soap opera that played out right before our eyes. The film premiers August 8, 2014 on PBS.

Home is Where the Heart Is on DVD

homeiswheretheheartis

Bailee Madison carries this film that is both heartbreaking and uplifting. Home is Where the Heart Is is a drama about life, death, love, and hope.

Madison plays ten-year-old Cotton, a young girl whose life has been somewhat dreary. Living in Bent Arrow, Texas, a small town that is on the verge of collapse, Cotton has been caring for her dying mother. She is an optimistic kid and always sees the good in everything. When her mother dies she knows in her heart that the woman has definitely gone to heaven.

Cotton’s best friend is Butch (Conrad Goode), a former football player who is living a quiet existence in Bent Arrow, playing his guitar, selling postcards, and writing songs. He’s a kind man who cares for the little girl. They are next-door neighbors who spend a lot of time together.

Cotton’s sister Sunny (Laura Bell Bundy) returns to Bent Arrow in time for her mother’s funeral. Years earlier Sunny bolted from the one-horse-town to forge a new life in Los Angeles as an actress, and she doesn’t even know Cotton. After her return to her hometown she has the responsibility of her newly orphaned young sister. Sunny must confront personal demons while figuring out how to care for not only herself but now also Cotton.

The movie delves into the lives of the three characters: Sunny, a tortured soul, Butch, a man who has lost the will to love another person, and Cotton, a sweet child who believes in dreams and has nothing but good thoughts. For a while, love conquers all their struggles. But life for them abruptly turns when a tragedy strikes just as all their futures look bright and hopeful.

Bailee Madison is an amazing actress. She is perfect for this role and proves that she can handle the tough dramatic scenes. The story is about life going on after someone dies but the love still lives in people’s hearts forever. There are many sad and torturous moments in the movie, yet it is still an optimistic story.
Home is Where the Heart Is is rated PG-13. There are sensitive emotional scenes however the film leaves viewers overcoming the sad storylines and enjoying the main storyline of the two reunited sisters.
