The Dick Van Dyke Show: Classic Mary Tyler Moore Episodes

Dick Van Dyke Mary Tyler Moore DVDThe Dick Van Dyke Show ran from 1961-1966 and introduced a new star to the public. Mary Tyler Moore played Laura Petrie who is a charming and adorable character.  This new DVD is a compilation of 20 episodes featuring the craziness and talent of Mary Tyler Moore.

During the run of the series, MTM not only played her role of the loving wife and mother with sheer comedy, in several episodes she would dance and sing. Her talent was endless and proved to be a great compliment to Dick Van Dyke. Moore often wore Capri pants on the show, which was something quite different for TV at that time. Most women on TV wore dresses – even when cleaning the house – but MTM was dressed in stylish capris that made her character more relatable to viewers and especially women, although men also enjoyed seeing her fabulous figure in those cute Capri pants.

The episodes on this fun-filled collection are:

  1. Oh How We Met the night That We Danced
  2. My Blonde-Haired Brunette
  3. The Curious Thing About Women
  4. The Two Faces of Rob
  5. My Husband Is a Check- Grabber
  6. Ray Murdock’s X-Ray
  7. Laura’s Little Lie
  8. Very Old Shoes, Very Old Rice
  9. The Life and Love of Joe Coogan
  10. My Part-Time Wife
  11. October Eve
  12. Teacher’s Petrie
  13. My Mother Can Beat Up My Father
  14. Pink Pills and Purple Patients
  15. Never Bathe on Saturday
  16. Show of Hands
  17. Coast to Coast Big Mouth
  18. See Rob Write, Write, Rob, Write
  19. The Curse of the Petrie People
  20. Long Night’s Journey into Day

In one of these classic episodes, “Coast to Coast Big Mouth”, Laura blabs on a national television show that her husband’s boss is bald, something he has never told anyone outside of his inner circle. And on another classic episode, “Never Bathe on Saturday”, Laura gets her big toe stuck in the bathtub faucet.

In yet another episode, Laura helps out in Rob’s office and tries to prove she can still keep the house running smoothly. And when Rob discovers Laura lied on their wedding license, the couple wonders if they are legally married.  Wacky situations like these are what made The Dick Van Dyke Show so endearing to viewers and a sitcom classic. It is one of the benchmark sitcom shows in television history.

This is a great collection of funny episodes that will be cherished by the entire family. Yes, the show is in black and white and is dated, but funny is funny and these episodes stand the test of time.
Bonus features include commentary by Dick Van Dyke and Carl Reiner on some episodes and a look at Laura Petrie’s classic phrase, “Oh Rob.”

The Dick Van Dyke Show: Classic Mary Tyler Moore Episodes is filled with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments featuring Mary Tyler Moore, who never fails to endear herself and her character to viewers. This DVD is not rated however it is acceptable for all ages.

LOL at LEGOLAND HOTEL

IMG_4659You can’t help but smile as you walk into the newly opened LEGOLAND hotel. Bright primary colors – red, blue and yellow pop out and greet your arrival. Next to the lobby is a gift shop selling LEGO kits and swords for kids to slice through the air and poke each other in a duel.

Carlsbad has the first LEGOLAND Hotel in the United States. Located right at the main entrance of LEGOLAND California, the hotel has 250 rooms decorated in three popular LEGO themes – Pirate, Kingdom or Adventure.

We enjoyed riding up the elevator to our Adventure room on the third level. The elevator is decorated in a LEGO theme as you walk inside. Once the doors close the lights dim, a disco ball shines with flashing lights and music encourages guests to dance.

IMG_4666As we walked into our hotel room, the girls giggled at the LEGO bugs decorating various walls. Each claimed a bed on the bunk in the separate “kids-only” sleeping area with themed wallpaper and a television. There is also a pull-out trundle bed below the bunk bed for a third child. A queen-size bed with a flat screen television is for grown-ups.

Inside the hotel, kids love the secret whoopee cushions, treasure trails and dragons. There is a 32-foot high pirate shipwreck that bursts through the castle wall and into the river of LEGO. It’s Interactive fun as children raise a pirate flag and listen to the sound of canons blasts.

For meals, most families enjoy the child-friendly dining experience at Bricks Family restaurant. Families color their own table cover while looking over a menu with a wide range of buffet options to suit every taste and age group. The Skyline Bar/Lounge serves drinks and snacks throughout the day.

IMG_4667Outside the heated swimming pool is basic, yet keeps little ones happy. There are plenty of chairs and umbrellas for adults to relax while watching their little ones.

LEGOLAND Hotel guests get to enter the park to be one of the first on rides and attractions 30 minutes before the Park officially opens.

Right after Labor Day, LEGOLAND is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the week, except on holidays. SEALIFE Aquarium is open daily.

LEGOLAND Hotel is located at 5885 The Crossings Drive

The Americanization of Emily on Blu-ray

emilyJames Garner and Julie Andrews star in this offbeat 1964 movie that confronts the reality of war. The movie is in black and white, which adds to the tone of Garner’s anti-war character.

Garner plays Lt. Commander Charles Madison, a “dog robber” in the United States Navy. A dog-robber is someone who does anything in his power to keep his Admiral comfortable. In this case Charlie procures chocolates, booze, steaks, eggs, vegetables, and female company for Admiral Jessup (Melvyn Douglas), which is a difficult thing to do in London near the end of World War II.

Emily Barham (Andrews) drives for the motor pool. When she first meets Madison she is a stuffy British woman with a chip on her shoulder. Her father and husband had been killed in the war, and here is this man who has a great sense of fun and is enjoying to the best of his ability his part in WWII. After all, Charlie is safe, not being shot at, and lives in luxury.
But Emily quickly changes and the attraction between the two is strong. She is happy that he is not in harm’s way. That is one of his attractions to her. And the fact that he is anti-war adds to her feelings. Neither one of them wants to glorify war or fighting. They have seen too much bloodshed and grief.

Then when Charlie gets an assignment that puts him at the front line on D-Day, he schemes and maneuvers to get out of this crazy mission that was though up by the Admiral when he was having a nervous breakdown. Charlie knew the Admiral was losing his mind and put the fool-hardy scheme on the back burner, but his friend, Lt. Cmdr. Cummings (James Coburn) who has been living the high-life along with Charlie, decides it’s time to get into the fighting and exchange the food, wine, and fancy rooms for a spot on the beach on D-Day. This doesn’t sit well with Charlie.

What makes this an interesting movie is the craziness of the situations. Garner himself is anti-war. He told me once in an interview that this was a film close to his heart. The comedy of the situation and the wacky story are endearing to him and to viewers.

This is definitely a James Garner film. He carries it on his shoulders and watching him it is easy to be taken in by his character and his rough charm.

A bonus on this disc is a featurette about making the D-Day scene, which was filmed in Oxnard, California. The three-minute scene took four months of preparation and one week of shooting. But the hard work paid off. The scene is intense and provides the big twist to the movie.

The Americanization of Emily is a true anti-war classic with one of Hollywood’s greatest leading men at the center of it. It is part of the Warner Archive Collection and can be ordered from their website at WBshop.com.

Sofia the First: The Floating Palace DVD

sofiaSofia is Disney’s little Princess-in-Training. Sofia the First TV show on Disney Junior is a hit with young viewers. What makes her different from the other “Disney Princesses” is that she became a princess “over night” and she has to learn to live a royal life with her new family. Every once in awhile she is visited by another Disney Princess who helps her when she finds herself in a difficult situation.

Ariel comes to see Sofia in “The Floating Palace.” When Sofia and her family take off on a vacation aboard their floating palace – what we would call a gigantic yacht – they get more than just a tranquil visit to Maraway Cove, a secluded cove where King Roland vacationed as a boy.

Sofia’s enchanted necklace (the Amulet of Avalor) transforms her into a mermaid when she is in the water. How cool is that? She meets a curious little mermaid named Oona who is a princess too. Her enchanted item is a comb. Now Cedric the Sorcerer sets out to capture Oona and take the comb for its power to take over the kingdom.

Oona’s friend is a seahorse named Sven (not to be confused with the snowman of the same name in the movie Frozen). Ariel (reprised by Jodi Benson) comes to help Sofia get her new friend back from the sea monster that took her. Cedric’s plan is dashed because Oona’s family comes together and the message in this story is – whether mermaid or human, “We’re all devoted to our families.”

The two worlds collide in an amazing undersea adventure focusing on the love of families. “In sea or air, the love we share” is what makes life worth living.

This DVD contains three other episodes from the popular preschool show. In “The Tri-Kingdom Picnic” three royal families – from Weiling, Kaldune and Enchancia – get together for a day of food and games. It’s a day for royal fun under the sun. James is excited because this year he has Sofia as his partner instead of Amber who hates being in the sun and playing those silly games. James is intent on winning the Golden Chalice for the first time. But his sportsmanship is put to the test and he is not a good loser. In the meantime, King Roland decides to have the adults play games this year. What a treat!

In “Finding Clover” Sofia’s little rabbit feels left out when her new royal duties keep her from spending time with him. When a magician comes to town Clover decides to join him, leaving Sofia left to wonder what happened to her beloved Clover. She sets out to find him.

And in “Make Way for Miss Nettle,” magic is abundant when Sofia, James, and Desmond join the after school gardening club and uncover an evil plot by Miss Nettle, a former apprentice to Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. Miss Nettle is jealous of their powers and captures the fairies while searching for their spell book. It is up to the kids to save them.

Sofia the First: The Floating Palace is a DVD filled with plenty of magic, royalty, and wonderful stories. The four episodes are enchanting stories from the first season of this very popular show. Sofia is a very popular Disney character and it’s easy to know why. She is sweet, loving, and filled with excitement. This is a great DVD that will be played over and over again. It’s rated TV-Y for everyone.

Jimmy Fallon Talks About The Tonight Show

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon - Season 1Jimmy Fallon has been hosting The Tonight Show for several months now. He recently spoke to members of the Television Critics Association about his new job and his input in the new format as well as moving the show from California back to New York where it began in 1954 and was called Tonight Show. Steve Allen hosted this popular show for several years. In 1957 the show changed and Jack Paar became the full-time host. At that time it was called The Jack Paar Tonight Show. Johnny Carson took over the show in 1962 and the name changed to The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. In 1992 it changed again to The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, then briefly in 2009 to The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien then back to Jay Leno. This year it is known as The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

“It’s an homage, a little tip of the cap, a little bit to the origins of the show,” Fallon explained about the title change back to “starring” from “with”.  “I thought it would be perfect.”

Not only did Fallon have influence in changing the name of the show, he also pushed for the move back to New York.

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy FallonIn 1972, with Carson at its helm, the show moved from New York to Burbank, California. “It wasn’t easy,” he said about convincing the powers that be at NBC. “For me, it kind of wasn’t a real option. I mean, I was born and raised in New York. I live in New York with my wife, and we now have a little 6‑month‑year‑old baby, and she’s very cute.” He continued, “It could be a good [to have a change]. It’s been out here [in California] for 40‑something years. It started in New York. Why not bring it back to New York? What’s going to happen? What’s the worst that can happen? It’s just a beautiful city. I think of New York, I think of nighttime. I just think it’s the perfect place, where it should be.”

Fallon had been hosting Late Night Starring Jimmy Fallon since 2009. Listening to him talk, it is evident he enjoys the talk show format with plenty of skits and antics. “I wish that Steve Allen and Johnny Carson were still around just to see what we’re going to do with the show because I think, when they invented this show, it was all about being fun and silly and goofy.  And Steve Allen was the first guy to sit in a plate with ice cream and pretend he’s a banana split and get chocolate syrup all over him and roll around, because that’s what it should be. It should be goofy and fun and make everyone laugh. Everyone works too hard, and we’re the first thing after your local news. You watch us, and you get a good laugh, and you go to bed with a smile on your face. And that’s our job.”

With Jimmy Fallon gaining viewers and late night popularity, The Tonight Show seems to be the perfect fit for this talented actor/comedian/host.
