Into the Woods Movie Review

INTO THE WOODSInto the Woods is Disney’s present to audiences this holiday season. It is a bit long, however the film is beautifully photographed and has an amazing cast. If you liked the stage version, you’ll be blown away by the film version. And, if you’re like me and weren’t enthralled by the play, you will be by this movie.

This musical story brings together some well-known characters from several fairy tales. There is Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), her stepmother (Christine Baranski), stepsisters (Lucy Punch and Tammy Blanchard), Jack (Daniel Huttlestone), of Jack and the Beanstalk fame, his mother (Tracey Ullman), Rapunzel (Mackenzie Mauzy), Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), The Wolf (Johnny Depp), The Baker (James Corden), The Baker’s Wife (Emily Blunt), Cinderella’s Prince Charming (Chris Pine), Rapunzel’s Prince (Billy Magnussen), and the Witch (Meryl Streep). This concoction of fairy tale characters combines to create an interesting story along with plenty of Stephen Sondheim songs.

INTO THE WOODSSo the gist of the story is this: The Baker and his Wife are barren due to a curse put on them by the Witch. To undo this curse they must bring her four items by the third midnight. The items are a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, and a slipper pure as gold.

Jack is taking his milky-white cow to sell, Red Riding Hood is taking a basket of goodies to her grandmother, Cinderella is attending the Royal Festival, and a Prince is wooing Rapunzel. Between them, they posses the items needed by the Baker and his Wife to reverse the curse and grant them a child. Getting the items is not as easy as the couple thinks. They must go into the woods to find them.

IntoTheWoods54514f966431fThere are some fun scenes and cute one-liners throughout the film. One of the most entertaining scenes is when the two princes meet up and sing about the two women they love. In this instance, the princes are more delightful than their female counterparts.

Jack unwittingly brings havoc to the village with his magic beans. After the Giant is killed his wife seeks revenge, causing a host of new problems for the characters. While a prince seeks Cinderella, Rapunzel is sought out by another prince, Little Red Riding Hood is encountering a Wolf, and the Baker and his Wife are looking for their items, the Witch is anxiously awaiting her four objects which will not only benefit her but also the Baker and his Wife.

IntoTheWoods53f63ef054dde

Don’t let this all confuse you. It isn’t as complicated as it might sound. It is a fun, witty, musically engaging story.

Johnny Depp said, “I loved the idea of taking all these fairy tales that we’ve grown up with and bringing them all to life in one large musical. We get to know more about them which turns out to be even spookier and funnier than imagined, so it’s just a brilliant idea. And it’s so beautifully put together.”

INTO THE WOODSAnd Chris Pine explained, “They have taken fairy tales, which are presented at the beginning of the story, and created an amalgam of all their different worlds and stories, and from there it just gets deeper and more complex. In many ways this film is about growing up, as the characters learn how spectacular life can be in all its forms and manifestations. It’s about discovering the world.”

According to Meryl Streep, “Fairy tales evolved as cautionary tales. They were told to scare children away from the dangers they would encounter in their lives and to encourage young women to marry rich men. Everyone is encouraged to find a prince and live happily ever after, and sometimes it doesn’t work that way.” Streep added, “Musically it is challenging and thrilling, and so this is what I hope for the audience: that they too will be thrilled and challenged.”

INTO THE WOODS

There are several songs in this modern fairy tale, including the title song and “No One is Alone.” Sondheim explained, “This is what the show has been about. No one is alone: we are all connected in some way and we are all responsible for each other’s actions. It’s something I believe firmly and it’s something that’s worth writing about.”

“In many ways, I think Into the Woods is a fairy tale for the 21st century post 9/11 generation,” said the film’s director Rob Marshall. “Sondheim and Lapine were way ahead of their time when they wrote it. The comforting knowledge that we are not alone in this unstable world gives us all that glimmer of hope.”

The running time of the film is 124 minutes, which is a bit long, in my opinion. Perhaps a little shorter would be nice, but in any case, this is an enchanting movie and I believe Emily Blunt deserves additional recognition for her performance.

Into the Woods is rated PG for thematic elements, fantasy action and peril, and some suggestive material.

Mr. Turner

turner

J.M.W. Turner was an acclaimed British painter. Mr. Turner is the story of the last 25 years of his life, starring Timothy Spall as the eccentric artist.

Turner lived from 1775 – 1851 and was thought to be among the most admired painters of the time. Joseph Mallord William Turner focused on painting landscapes in both oil and watercolors. The movie shows him as a man, and although some of his paintings are discussed, the film is more an exploration of his self than his work.

The man was strange, there is no doubt about that. J.M.W. Turner was a depressed and troubled man who fathered two daughters whom he rarely acknowledged. His housekeeper adored him, a feeling he didn’t share however he did exploit sexually. His last mistress was his landlady in the seaside town of Chelsea during his many travels to capture landscapes in his work. Upon his death, his final words, supposedly, were “The sun is God.” That should tell you about how strange he actually was. All of these aspects of the man are explored in this film. His dark, dismal persona is a little difficult to take along with his almost continual grunting.
According to the film’s director Mike Leigh, “Mr. Turner is about the tensions and contrasts between this very mortal man and his timeless work, between his fragility and his strength.” Leigh also said Turner “was a giant among artists, single-minded and uncompromising, extraordinarily prolific, revolutionary in his approach, consummate to his craft, clairvoyant in his vision. Yet Turner the man was eccentric, anarchic, vulnerable, imperfect, erratic and sometimes uncouth.”

Timothy Spall won the Best Actor nod for his performance of the eccentric artist at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. The movie runs 149 minutes and jumps from location to location in a somewhat erratic way, much life the man himself.

Mr. Turner opens December 19, 2014 and is rated R.

Wicked is Back in Hollywood

Wicked Tou - Emerald City

The popular musical Wicked is back at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood through March 15, 2015. If you haven’t seen this hit play, now is the time to find out what happened in Oz before Dorothy and Toto arrived. And if you have seen it before, it’s time to revisit this fun, witty, and musical story.

Wicked Emerald City TourWicked is the story of Glinda (The Good Witch of the North) and Elphaba (The Wicked Witch of the West). They were roommates in school and although in the beginning they clashed (and I’m not just referring to Elphaba’s green skin), they became best friends.

Pay close attention to the scenery, quips, references, and characters while you see the story of the two girls unfold. There are plenty of things that will spark some memories of the classic film, The Wizard of Oz. We all know about Dorothy and her friends, but now we can delve deeper into the characters in Oz.

Glinda is a self-absorbed, popular girl, while Elphaba is a sweet, well-meaning outcast. They are hardly the characters we remember from the movie. So what happened to make them into the characters we have grown up watching every year? This is the story of the land and the people over the rainbow!

Wicked Emerald City Tour

What I found amazing about this production are the visual effects. While most people might just concentrate on the storylines, the visuals are something you shouldn’t miss. And those amazing “flying monkeys” look realistic. They are mesmerizing to watch.

Wicked Emerald City TourVariety has said Wicked is “A Cultural Phenomenon” and Entertainment Weekly proclaimed it is “The Best Musical of the Decade.” It’s definitely a fun story because of the characters we all know, or think we know.

Wicked is for ages 8 and up, and no one under 5 will be admitted to the theater. The children around me were just as taken with the play as the adults, so if you have kids, they will most likely enjoy the show and their friends will be “green” with envy. (I had to put that in!)

Wicked is playing at the Pantages now through March 15, 2015. They will hold a day-of-performance lottery for a limited number of $25 orchestra seats for each performance. Entries will be accepted at the box office beginning two and a half hours prior to each performance; each person will print their name and the number of tickets (1 or 2) they wish to purchase on a card that is provided. Two hours before curtain, names will be drawn at random for a limited number of tickets priced at $25 each; cash only. Only one entry is allowed per person. Cards are checked for duplication prior to drawing. Winners must be present at the time of the drawing and show valid ID to purchase tickets. Limit one entry per person and two tickets per winner. Tickets are subject to availability

My Dolphin Show App

Face it. Everyone loves dolphins. From Flipper to Winter, dolphins have been loved for generations. My Dolphin Show is a fun app for kids to enjoy and have their own dolphin. They get to control the dolphin and learn how to get it to jump through hoops, touch beach balls with its nose, and do other tricks.

There are different locations in which the dolphin play takes place and there are some cute costumes in which to dress the dolphin. By learning more and doing more extensive activities with the dolphin, kids have the chance to “earn” more costumes and ways to customize the game.

Additional content is being added to the app. The next additions will be more costumes and a new water world theme park location.

This app is designed for fun and creativity. There are “in app” purchases to add even more fun for the player, however they aren’t necessary to enjoy the excitement of training and playing with a dolphin.

The movies Dolphin Tale and Dolphin Tale 2 have increased awareness, love of, and appreciation of dolphins. Many travel destinations offer the opportunity to swim with dolphins, and yes, I have done so. These amazing animals are intelligent, fun loving, and very sweet.

The My Dolphin Show app is a fun way for kids to interact with their own dolphin and make him jump, swim, and play. And the dolphin in this app can do things their real life counterparts cannot – and should not. This is the best way for kids to play with a dolphin, to be creative, and have fun. And, quite frankly, parents will enjoy spending a little time playing as well.

Check out the official trailer for My Dolphin Show.

My Dolphin Show is now available on the iTunes App Store for only $1.99 and more information can be found at the website (www.mydolphinshow.com). There is more fun and dolphin information in the My Dolphin Show Facebook page
