Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas on NBC

Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas - Season 2014

In 2003 the world was introduced to a rambunctious “elf” named Buddy, a human who was brought up in the North Pole thinking he was an elf. This movie has become a holiday tradition in many households. Now, Jim Parsons supplies the voice of Buddy in this animated holiday made-for-TV film. Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas is filled with music and fun for the whole family.

Buddy is a sweet and innocent fellow who, until recently, thought he was an overgrown elf. When Santa tells him the truth, Buddy sets out for New York to find his real father. What he discovers is not only does he have a father, but a whole new family.

Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas
Besides locating his family, Buddy brings the holiday spirit to everyone. His enthusiasm is contagious and his once-humdrum family discovers, and re-discovers, the joy of the season as well as their love for each other.

There are nine musical numbers, beginning with “Happy All the Time,” which is a fun little ditty that will put anyone in the spirit of love and joy.

Buddy’s enthusiasm as well as his naiveté is endearing, even if he is animated this time around. Jim Parsons is the perfect person to voice this energetic and innocent fellow.

Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas

Edward Asner voices Santa, with Mark Hamill supplying the voice of Buddy’s father, Rachel MacFarlane voices Buddy’s stepmother, and Max Charles voices Buddy’s brother.

This is a cute holiday film filled with music, love, and spirit. Elf: Buffy’s Musical Holiday is for the entire family and airs Tuesday, December 16, 2014 on NBC.

Edith Wharton: The Sense of Harmony on DVD

edithI was introduced to Edith Wharton in college and was taken by her way with words. Wharton was an American writer who spent a good deal of her life living overseas. Edith Wharton: The Sense of Harmony is a biographical film about Wharton’s life and how her work was interpreted and admired during her life and after her death.

Wharton lived in the interesting time known as the “Gilded Age.” She lived a life of privilege among the second and third generations of wealthy post-Civil War American tycoons. She loved to travel and later in life resided in areas of Europe, although she still wrote about life in America. Much of her work spotlighted American values and upper-class morals.

Being socially and politically connected, Wharton was privy to the society of wealth and class, yet when World War I broke erupted, she went to the front lines to see the fighting for herself. This was a woman of strength and a formidable one at that. And, she was a notable author. She was the first woman to win the Pulitzer for fiction.
If you are not familiar with her work, you might not be interested in this film. Edith Wharton is considered one of the great female American writers having penned many books which are still part of many school curriculums: The Age of Innocence, Ethan Frome, The House of Mirth, The Custom of the Country, and about 40 others. The film includes home movies, interviews with biographers, and an interesting breakdown of Wharton’s life. She is described as “a natural storyteller.”

Viewers might be surprised to learn Wharton’s other talent was designing. Her home, “The Mount,” is now a museum and one of the only 5% of the National Historic Landmarks dedicated to a woman. Edith Wharton broke ground for women and is held in high regard in American literature and among American women in history. As a matter of fact, she was the first woman to receive an honorary degree from Yale.

While this film might not be of interest to the general population, those interested in literature, women in history, and the Gilded Age, will find this an interesting look at history and one of America’s notable female novelists.
Edith Wharton: The Sense of Harmony is not rated.

The Merriest Place on Earth 2014

Disney Merriest Place 2014-1

It’s that time again – the time when The Happiest Place on Earth becomes The Merriest Place on Earth. Disneyland Resort has transformed into a winter/holiday wonderland and is all decked out in its holiday finest.

Of course, when you enter Disneyland, you’ll notice the beautifully decorated tree, but look beyond that to see Sleeping Beauty’s “Winter” Castle. It’s adorned with 20,000 ornaments and sparkles with all the “snow” and glitter. Don’t be surprised if you see Aurora walking around the park.

Disney Merriest Place 2014 -3

By now, if you’re familiar with the transformation, you know The Haunted Mansion, The Jungle Cruise, and It’s a Small World attractions get transformed into holiday-themed rides, as they always do this time of year. It’s fun to see the changes to the animals in The Jungle Cruise and of course, Jack Skeleton in The Haunted Mansion. It’s a Small World is especially merry with the theme of the winter holiday season running through the world.

These attractions have completely changed for the season. But they’re not all. Main Street U.S.A. in Disneyland and Buena Vista Street in Disney California Adventure are decked out in their holiday finest too. There are almost 79,000 ornaments and about 2,000 feet of garland decorating Main Street. And let’s not forget the nearly 10,000 lights.

Disney Merriest Place 2014 -2

And over on Buena Vista Street in Disney California Adventure, there are approximately 3,000 lights on the tree. No, I didn’t count them myself. Instead, I took the word of the people who actually did. Who could have time to count the lights when there are so many fun things to do and see at Disneyland Resort? I recommend you leave the stats to the pros and take advantage of all the sights, sounds, and definitely food.

Disney Merriest Place 2014 -sofiaAnd, besides the attractions, which we all love, keep your eyes open for holiday themed parades and pop up concerts around the parks. “A Christmas Fantasy” Parade is now 20 years old and one of the longest running parades in the resort.
And across the way in Disney California Adventure, loveable Olaf hosts the amazing “World of Color-Winter Dreams” light show, with visits from Anna and Elsa. Don’t miss this! Frozen is the show of the year and I saw more Anna, Elsa, and Olaf t-shirts and dresses being worn, as well as dolls being carried, this year than any other character, with the possible exception of Mickey Mouse.
The “Believe in Holiday Magic” fireworks display is stunning. No one can put on a fireworks display like Disney does.

Holidays at the Disneyland Resort are an annual event for many families. I can honestly say that this year was the most crowded I have ever seen it. The word is getting out that celebrating the season amidst the fun and magic of Disney is the thing to do. So, if possible, my recommendation is (shh) if you can play hooky, visit the resort on a weekday. Of course, you didn’t hear that from me. But if that isn’t possible, then by all means, go any time you can. Nothing says “Happy Holidays” like a day at the Disneyland Resort!

This is Where I Leave You on Combo Pack

thisisThe ensemble film This is Where I Leave You is reminiscent of the 1983 ensemble movie The Big Chill. Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Adam Driver, and Corey Stoll star as siblings with Jane Fonda playing their mother. The siblings, along with their spouses, children, and significant others gather in the family home to mourn the loss of the family patriarch. They are together for a week to “sit Shiva,” the Jewish tradition of taking the week to reflect after a passing.
While together for the week, the relationships between the family members and their childhood friends is put under a microscope for the viewers, with some funny consequences, however, this is more of a drama than a comedy. It’s an emotional journey for everyone.

While reconnecting with each other and figuring out some of their past mistakes, the family encounters several interesting dilemmas. Each person is dysfunctional in his/her own way, and the family unit is definitely dysfunctional, to put it mildly.
Rose Byrne, Kathryn Hahn, Connie Britton, Timothy Olyphant, Dax Shepard, Debra Monk, Abigail Spencer, and Ben Schwartz add to the ensemble cast.

The combo pack includes a DVD, a Blu-ray, and a Digital HD download code. There are some fun featurettes as well as deleted and extended scenes on the Blu-ray. The film is also available in a single DVD.
While critics and audiences have praised This Is Where I Leave You, those who remember The Big Chill might think it doesn’t measure up to that hit film of the past. I thought there were some cute scenes in this film, however I’m partial to The Big Chill and that ensemble. Both films delve into the relationships between a group of people who gather after a death and reflect on their lives. Among a group of talented actors, the standout in this film is Jane Fonda. The veteran is a consummate actor and in this role she shows her comedic as well as her dramatic talent.

This is Where I Leave You is rated R for language, sexual content and some drug use.

Debbie Macomber’s Mr. Miracle on Hallmark Channel

miracle1For years we’ve been used to Doris Roberts as Mrs. Miracle in her fun-loving holiday movies. This year there is a bit of a change with Rob Morrow starring as Mr. Miracle.

Harry Mills (Morrow) is sent to Earth for his first assignment. He’s been an angel for centuries, and now is getting his first assignment with humans. If he cannot complete it by Christmas, he will have to return to the heavens, but if he is successful, he’ll be able to stay on earth and take on another project.

Everything is new for Harry. He’s like an intelligent toddler in a way. He means well but doesn’t know the correct way to go about things, and especially how to complete his project, which is helping a young woman get back on the right track after her life has taken a detour and she doesn’t know what to do with herself.

Debbie Macomber's Mr. MiracleMichelle Harrison stars as Celeste, an angel who has been on earth for a long time breaking in, so to speak, novices. She is Harry’s handler.
Britt Irvin is Addie Folsom, the subject of Harry’s assignment. Addie is drifting and really doesn’t know what to do with herself. She also has bad feelings about being away when her father died nine months ago. Everything for Addie is a struggle and it is up to Harry to help her regain her self-confidence and get her life back on track.

So, that’s the gist of the story. Harry’s cover is a literature teacher at the local college and Addie happens to be his student. She also happens to be his neighbor. Throughout their association, Harry tries to push Addie back to following her dreams, but quickly learns that angels cannot push. They have to go about their business in a different way. They are there to guide, not push.

Watch for Tommy the dog, who happens to be an angel too! He’s the warm and fuzzy character in this film – literally.Debbie Macomber's Mr. Miracle

For those viewers who remember the Mrs. Miracle films, they probably won’t see any resemblance between these two characters. Harry is a nerdy but well-meaning angel. He’s not the warm and fuzzy character that Doris Roberts brought to the screen as Mrs. Miracle. But if this show is popular, the filmmakers have left room for a sequel or two.

Debbie Macomber’s Mr. Miracle premiers Saturday, December 6, 2014 on Hallmark Channel.

Dolphin Tale 2 Combo Pack

dolphintale 2

Three years ago the world was introduced to Winter, a sweet dolphin that was injured and had to have her tail removed. Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of many people, a prosthetic tail was created, allowing Winter to move more like she should. Dolphin Tale was the story of how Winter survived. Now, Dolphin Tale 2 continues on her story and introduces a new dolphin to viewers: Hope.

The entire cast returns for this sequel: Harry Connick, Jr. (Dr. Clay Haskett who runs the facility), Nathan Gamble (Sawyer Nelson), Ashley Judd (Sawyer’s mother), Kris Kristofferson (Clay’s father), Cozi Zuehisdorff (Clay’s daughter Hazel), Austin Stowell (Kyle), Morgan Freeman (Dr. Cameron McCarthy who invented Winter’s prosthesis), and Bethany Hamilton joins the group as herself.

The film begins with Winter being a little lackluster these days. For some reason she isn’t up to her usual self. Then, her “surrogate” mother Panama, an old dolphin who has been Winter’s best friend, suddenly dies. Did Winter know Panama was dying? Anyway, after Panama’s death, Winter is even more sullen. It is evident she feels the loss of the other dolphin. But that’s not the only problem facing the team. According to the law, Winter cannot be kept alone. She must be paired with another female dolphin. Then, a dolphin is found beached. She is brought to the facility, but after she recovers from her injuries, she is released back into the ocean. There is no reason to keep a dolphin that can survive in the wild.

That leaves group with the same dilemma as before. They must find another female dolphin or Winter will be moved to a facility in Texas. Texas! They’re not about the let that happen. They have cared for and loved the animal through the years. But what happens next is nothing short of a miracle in the form of a little dolphin named Hope.

Meanwhile, the kids who were so important in the first movie have grown up. Hazel and Sawyer are best friends, and becoming closer. They take more responsibility at the center this time around. Dr. Clay Haskett sees they are ready to step up and are dedicated to the animals and the center.

Bethany Hamilton appears as herself. Hamilton lost an arm to a shark and has been a popular figure in the surfing world and an inspiration for disabled people all around the world. Her story was dramatized in the film Soul Surfer. Hamilton and Winter are role models for disabled people, especially those who have lost a limb due to war, illness, or accident.

While the drama with Winter is continuing and everyone is hoping there will be a miracle to keep her in Florida, Sawyer gets an incredible offer to join a three-month semester at sea where he will learn even more about the animals in the ocean. He is conflicted about leaving Winter in her time of trouble. Should he leave her when her future is in jeopardy?

Kristofferson is Clay’s father who doles out wisdom, and Morgan Freeman is the sympathetic doctor who creates another amazing prosthetic for Winter.

This inspiring true story will capture the hearts of everyone. The story of Winter and Hope is endearing and wonderful. And the dedication of all the people at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium is nothing short of inspirational.
For some additional humor in the story, keep your eyes out for a dedicated pelican who takes a liking to a sea turtle!

Bonus features include a look at how they filmed the underwater scenes, the true story of the dolphins, why the film was created, how the two kids had grown between the two films and took on more responsibility this time around, Bethany Hamilton’s part in the movie, and some additional bonuses. The combo pack includes a Blu-ray, a DVD, and a Digital HD code.

Dolphin Tale 2 is rated PG for some mild thematic elements.

How To Be a Cloud: Yoga Songs for Kids Vol. 3 CD GIVEAWAY

howtobeacloud 21-04-53 completedKira Willey, a nationally acclaimed musician and kids’ yoga expert, will release her third album of upbeat folk-pop tunes meant for all-ages activity: How To Be a Cloud: Yoga Songs for Kids Vol. 3.

Sweet vocals, catchy melodies and heartfelt lyrics are the hallmarks of Willey’s style. The album opens with an invitation to celebrate the moment with “My Favorite Day.” “Gotta Lotta Happy” and other songs invite heart-opening gratitude for the joy of life, and the title track and others offer a path toward relaxation through words and yoga. A remix of “Colors” features new rhythms and the rousing voices of 75 kindergarten children recorded at a recent live performance at Donegan Elementary School in Bethlehem, PA.

On How To Be a Cloud, melody, lyrics and activity blend seamlessly together. Willey’s bright and easy instructions on the bonus tracks are simply suggestions — children, parents and teachers may explore other movements to go along with each song, as Willey remarks in the liner notes. At a time when schools are dropping both music and physical fitness from the curriculum, songs like these can provided much-needed moments of movement and tranquility during the busy day.

“Kids need to move their bodies; it’s how they learn best,” notes Kira, who is also the mother of three children. “And music is a great way to get them moving. Tell a child to do something, and you may encounter resistance–but start singing, or use a catchy melody, and kids are suddenly engaged and having fun!”
