Shalom Sesame The Complete Series DVD Set

shalomThe Shalom Sesame The Complete Series DVD collection makes a great gift or just a fun addition to any Jewish household with young children. There are six DVDs, each with two Shalom Sesame episodes, and some bonuses as well.

The episodes have a variety of guest stars popping in to see what’s going on and add some fun to the shows. Greg Kinnear, Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Debra Messing, Eva Longoria, Christina Applegate, and more stop by Shalom Sesame. Like the American version, this show emphasizes vocabulary, the alphabet, counting, and ideas.

For instance, everyone learns about “Mitzvah” when a storm ravages the street. They help each other to rebuild the street and clear out the debris. Helping each other out is a “Mitzvah.” And when Avigail is home sick, Grover goes on a “Mitzvah Mission” to visit his friend and bring her some chicken noodle soup. Helping a friend is a “Mitzvah.” There are other Mitzvahs in this episode, combined with plenty of learning opportunities for youngsters.

If your household isn’t fluent in Hebrew, I recommend using the “subtitle” option so everyone will hear all the words. Then, after awhile the subtitles won’t be necessary. That’s the beauty of Sesame. Learning is inherent in the shows.

Not only are Hebrew words, phrases, and numbers part of the shows, but also Jewish customs are featured on the discs. Learn about Chanukah, Sukkot, Shavuat, Shabbat, Purim, and other holidays and customs of the Jewish faith. Customs and Jewish culture is front and center on each of these episodes, as are Jewish values, and even locations in Israel are highlighted.

The Muppets we all know and love are front and center in these adorable episodes. And even little Ernie sings his famous “Rubber Ducky” song in Hebrew. What could be cuter?

Combining Muppets, humans, songs, sights, vocabulary, numbers, traditions, and holidays, Shalom Sesame is a delightful way to celebrate Jewishness in your home. It has all the great aspects of the Sesame Street with which we all grew up, and adds the Hebrew and Jewish aspects as well.
The discs are available individually, however I highly recommend this Complete Series all in one box. Shalom Sesame is an Award Winning Jewish Children’s Program, and will be a treasured show in any Jewish home with youngsters.

Elsa & Fred Movie Review

EF_00591_R.tifWhat a cast! Elsa & Fred stars Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer, along with Marcia Gay Harden, Chris Noth, Scott Bakula, Reg Rogers, George Segal, and James Brolin in a sweet story about aging and love.

Elsa (MacLaine) is a colorful 74 year-old woman. She loves life, adventure, and more than anything, she embellishes everything she says. She merges her fantasy life with her real life, something that frustrates her new neighbor Fred (Plummer). Fred is a recent 80-year-old widower and somewhat disgruntled about life. It takes the effervescent Elsa to pull him out of his shell.

Elsa has always been entranced by the Fellini movie La Dolce Vita, and has longed to play out the scene in Rome’s Fountain of Trevi. She continually watches the movie and enjoys Anita Ekberg and Marcello Mastroianni’s Trevi fountain scene.

Elsa’s imagination is overwhelming, but charming. She is full of life, although she is a very sick woman. Elsa refuses to let her illness get in the way of her lust for life, and she takes it as a personal challenge to bring Fred out of his doldrums and show him all that life has to offer.

Fred is satisfied to stay locked-up in his apartment, and hates that his daughter (Harden) hired a caregiver to look after him. He is comfortable wallowing in his depression alone, and insists he doesn’t need anyone or anything. What Elsa teaches him is “everybody needs something.” Even “two old fools.”

elsaThere are several side stories – Elsa’s two very different sons (Bakula and Rogers), Fred’s son-in-law (Noth) who only wants his money, and his dear friend and doctor (Segal) with whom he can confide. James Brolin also appears as, well, I don’t want to give any spoilers. However the main story is Elsa and Fred. These two characters are endearing.

This movie points out it is never too late to make your dreams come true. In this case, Elsa finally gets her dream of living out the fountain scene in Rome and discovers Fred is much better than Marcello Mastroianni.

There are several delightful scenes, notably the one in the restaurant and the one in the fountain. They will most likely have audience members thinking about them long after they leave the theater.

The movie is humorous, engaging, and utterly charming. It’s about time we had a great senior love story – especially with these amazing actors and ingratiating characters.

Elsa gets to live out the famous movie scene she has been dreaming about for 60 years. If you could, which movie scene would you want to live out?
Elsa and Fred is rated PG-13 for brief strong language.

Big Hero 6 – Movie Review

BIG HERO 6Big Hero 6 is a fun animated film for the entire family. This is definitely a Disney film that will be adored by boys and girls alike, as well as their parents.

The story follows a young fourteen-year-old prodigy named Hiro. He lives in the city of San Fransokyo with his older brother Tadashi and aunt. Both Hiro and Tadashi are techno-geniuses. While Hiro prefers to spend his time “bot racing” with the amazing robot he built, Tadashi prefers to spend his time at tech school advancing his skills. Tadashi built a remarkable robot named Baymax, who will undoubtedly be a favorite character for all audience members. Everyone will want one of their own. I certainly do. He is “non-threatening” and “huggable.”

Baymax is programed to be a medical assistant and help people. Tadashi is a kind soul who only wants to better his fellow man. Once Hiro sees the amazing work being produced by Tadashi and his friends, he decides he too wants to go to the school to be part of it all.

When an accident occurs, Hiro again finds himself in the depths of despair and returns to his old life of unproductiveness. But things change when he and Baymax discover something sinister in the city. Soon Baymax, Hiro, and Tadashi’s friends Fred, Honey Lemon, Go Go Tomago, and Wasabi (they got their nicknames at school), transform into a superhero group to get to the bottom of an evil and devious plot and put an end to it.

BIG HERO 6

Baymax is a character that, in his innocence, is truly heroic. The close relationship between Baymax and young Hiro is heartening, as is the story itself. With the help of Baymax, Hiro finally has a sense of purpose. The youngster comes out of his shell and learns to be part of the world instead of a bystander, as he had been.

“The only limit is your imagination,” says Hiro. He uses his intelligence and tech skills to “upgrade” the group of nerds to create the superhero group of crime fighters.

BIG HERO 6

The location of the story is interesting too. It’s a combination of San Francisco and Tokyo – obviously. It’s more crowded and more modern than San Francisco and has all the lights and design of Tokyo. It’s San Fransokyo!

Director Don Hall says about the story, “Baymax’s one programmed desire is ‘How can I help?’ He’s filled with compassion. And Hiro is a teenager who has lost his way – their personalities play off each other in a way that is both funny and heartwarming.”

Big Hero 6 is a delightful, yet at times very sentimental, film.

FEASTFeast

Before the movie enjoy Disney’s newest short, Feast. This is absolutely adorable. It’s a cute little story of a sweet dog named Winston and his owner who shares his food with the little fellow. The story continues as their lives progress and the man falls in love with a woman who changes their lives.

Don’t be late to Big Hero 6. You’ll definitely want to enjoy Feast prior to the main movie.

Big Hero 6 is rated PG for action and peril, some rude humor, and thematic elements.
