Bring home ‘Christopher Robin’ on Blu-ray Combo Pack

Ewan McGregor is Christopher Robin, having grown up, left the old cottage, and now lives in London with his wife (Hayley Atwell) and daughter (Bronte Carmichael). The thing is, Christopher Robin has lost all the joy in life. He works all the time and neglects his daughter Madeline. His only focus is his job.

When Winnie the Pooh steps through the door in the Hundred Acre Wood, he ends up in London and lo and behold, he immediately comes face to face with his old buddy, Christopher Robin. This can’t be true, can it? Robin thinks he has lost his mind. But soon enough he realizes his old friend is there and he must return him to the Hundred Acre Wood.

Once reunited with all his childhood friends, Christopher Robin slowly rediscovers the joy of the little things in life, and the fun that can be had all around.

With the gang back together, Christopher Robin realizes what is most important in his life. His family must come first and thanks to Pooh and the gang, when audiences leave the theaters they will be smiling.

The bonus features on the Blu-ray Combo pack include a look behind the scenes. It sure looks like it was a fun film to make. There is a look at Jim Cummings who has voiced Winnie the Pooh (and Tigger) for more than half his life. Another bonus looks at how Walt Disney first learned about Pooh and the stories from his daughter. He knew they would translate well to film but it took him many years to get to that point. Disney was an admirer of A.A. Milne, the author of the books, and Milne was an admirer of Walt Disney. Their combined intelligence produced several magical and memorable characters we have known and loved. Perhaps one of the most interesting bonus features is how the stuffed animals came to life. They were stuffed animals on set, but also then digitized after the scenes were shot to create the moving and talking characters. It’s movie magic and in this case, the animators and the actors worked together seamlessly.

Christopher Robin is a loveable story for the entire family. It’s rated PG for some action, and is available in a Blu-ray Combo Pack and a single DVD.

‘Pixar Short Films Collection 3’

Eleven Pixar shorts along with two mini-movies combine in this Blu-ray combo pack. Plus there is a bonus about the making of Bao and a look at the Pixar animators creating caricatures of their colleagues. Each short is introduced by a filmmaker.

Included in the disc are:

Bao (It’s a cute little film about a mom who is suffering from empty nest syndrome. Then, magically, one of her dumplings comes to life and she once again has a little guy to care for. She tries everything to keep him close to home, but this little dumpling soon starts growing and eventually leaves the nest. No one stays young forever.)

Lou (A cute story about toys in a lost and found box and a playground bully.)

Piper (A fun little story of a young sandpiper who is afraid of the ocean. This little bird must learn to tame her fear in order to get food. )

Sanjay’s Super Team (Sanjay is a little boy who loves his super heroes. When his father makes him meditate in front of the Hindu gods, the little boy dreams of them as super heroes. This is a colorful little short.)

Riley’s First Date? (This short focuses on Riley and her parents when a boy comes to their house to pick her up. Is this an actual date?)

Lava (It is really a fun little story set to music about a volcano that is lonely and wants someone to “lava.” Occurring over millions of years, the volcano is about to give up when a new volcano bursts from the ocean. To say this is inventive doesn’t do it justice. It is sweet and adorable)

The Radiator Springs 500 ½ (Lightning McQueen and Mater must and the entire town of Radiator Springs are celebrating their Founder’s Day. Some hot rods roll into town and challenge McQueen and the race is on.)

Party Central (Join Mike and Sully at Monsters University as they party in the Oozma Kappa fraternity.)

The Blue Umbrella (On one rainy day in the big city, two umbrellas meet and fall in love.)

Miss Fritter’s Racing Skoool (This is like an infomercial with the characters from Cars 3. Miss Fritter is advertising her school as Cruz and McQueen watch the television.)

Marine Life Interviews (Some of the characters from Finding Dorydiscuss the blue fish who – surprise – doesn’t remember any of them. Hmm.)

The Legend of Mor’du (Discover the history of the characters of Brave.)

Partyaurus Rex (Toy Story’s greatest dinosaur is a party animal.)

‘Juliet, Naked’ on Blu-ray

Rose Byrne, Ethan Hawke, and Chris O’Dowd star in Juliet, Naked, an interesting romantic dramedy filled with touching moments.

Annie (Byrne) has been living with her boyfriend Duncan (O’Dowd) for 18 years. She works at a gallery and he is a teacher. But he’s more than that. Duncan is a fanatic about Tucker Crowe (Hawke), a singer-songwriter from ages ago who dropped out of sight and hasn’t been heard from in decades. But that doesn’t stop Duncan from keeping his shrine to the long-lost singer, and he maintains a blog about everything Tucker Crowe. This obsession with Crowe is insidious in his life.

When Annie posts a negative comment on Duncan’s blog she gets a reply – from Tucker Crowe himself. Annie and Duncan carry on an email relationship with him in the U.S.A. and she in England. Annie keeps this a secret from Duncan, and after awhile the two break up due to Duncan’s infidelity. But that doesn’t bother Annie too much. She has her relationship with Tucker.

Tucker has been dealing with his own personal conflicts. He has five children from various women, but only really knows one of them – his youngest son Jackson (Azhy Robertson). Tucker takes care of this young boy while his mother is living her own life. He feels a twinge of sadness about neglecting his other children, and as the film progresses his past is revealed.

Then Tucker and Jackson travel to England for the birth of Tucker’s grandchild and he and Annie finally meet.

The story is interesting and filled with an odd assortment of characters. But it is a compelling story and one that resonates with viewers. It might bring up memories of You’ve Got Mail, but just for a bit. It’s interesting how honest people are when they are communicating through email.

What will happen with Duncan when he finds out his ex is having a relationship with the man of his obsessions?

The bonus feature is a behind-the-scenes look at the story with the cast and filmmakers. Producer Jeffrey Soros explains he feels “If About a Boy and High Fidelity had a baby it would be Juliet, Naked.”

This is definitely an odd story with a mix of offbeat characters. The only one with a basically normal life is Annie. Although it is filled with quirky characters, the movie is interesting and enjoyable.

Juliet, Naked is rated R for language.

‘American Dresser’ on Blu-ray Combo Pack

Tom Berenger stars in American Dresser, the latest motorcycle movie for a new generation – as well as those of us who remember Easy Rider and Wild Hogs. The film co-stars Carmine Cangialosi who also wrote, directed, and produced the film.

After the death of his wife Sandra (Gina Gershon), John (Berenger) is devastated. His two daughters are at their wits ends. John drinks all the time and is depressed. Then he discovers a hidden letter that reveals a long-held secret. John decides to take off for Oregon on his Harley to clear his head and to find what has been missing in his life.

His best buddy Charlie (Keith David) insists on accompanying him on his journey, knowing this will be his last time riding a motorcycle. He is due to have a leg amputated and wants one last adventure with his old buddy.

Along the way they meet Willie (Cangialosi) who ends up accompanying the two across the country. The journey starts in Long Island, New York, goes down south then out to Monument Valley then to Los Angeles, and finally ends in Bend, Oregon. The trio has some very interesting and reflective experiences on their cross-country excursion and little by little their pasts are revealed. But although this is a story about the three men, it is also meant to be a story about the open road and the motorcycle culture.

On his return to New York, John goes through Sturgis, South Dakota, the location where motorcycle enthusiasts gather annually to get together, have fun, and experience the great world of the life of a biker. The movie was able to film on location during the 2017 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Also appearing in the movie are Bruce Dern, Penelope Ann Miller, and Jeff Fahey.

Berenger has had a long career in the industry, first catching the attention of moviegoers in the 1983 generational film The Big Chill. From there his career rose as he piled on credits to his resume. He is older but still has the charisma and charm his fans have come to know and love.

American Dresser is an interesting emotional and scenic journey across the United States and into the lives of the three characters. It’s not rated however there is drinking, drugs, and sex so the film is not meant for young viewers.

‘The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’ Movie Review

For a different twist to the annual treat of Clara and the tale of The Nutcracker, Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms takes viewers on a unique adventure to a magical kingdom. There is still the wonderful music we all know and love from Tchaikovsky, but not the ballet we have experienced throughout our lives. It has been replaced with an intriguing story of fantasy and love.

Mackenzie Foy stars as Clara, whose mother Marie (Anna Madeley) recently passed away. Clara and her sister, brother, and father are experiencing their first Christmas without Marie. Clara is a genius at mechanical items, like her mother was. This is the key to her experience in the new world she is about to discover. With a nudge from her godfather Drosselmeyer (Morgan Freeman), Clara uncovers an amazing kingdom where her mother once ruled and now it is up to her to save it from evil.

There are four realms in the kingdom (or Queendom) with Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren) and Sugar Plum (Keira Knightley) being the two dominant leaders. Clara must find a way to stop the destruction of the beautiful land once ruled by her mother. Can she live up to the high standards set by Marie?

While the story includes many of the elements and characters of the ballet, don’t think this is the ballet set to a fantasy story. There is some beautiful dancing by Misty Copeland, and definitely stay for the ending credits as there is more dancing as the film ends. But on the whole, this is a whimsical story which engaged and entertained all ages in my screening audience. The very young kids were delighted and the older viewers enjoyed it as well.

The story has shades of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe with a hint of The Wizard of Oz. That should give you a hint of the fantasy that will delight audiences this holiday season.

Explore the parallel world of the Land of Snowflakes, the Land of Flowers, the Land of Sweets, and the Fourth Realm (with mice) with Clara as she confronts evil. Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is rated PG for some mild peril.
