‘Julie’s Greenroom’ Coming to Netflix in 2017!

JGR_Final_Thumbnail (1)

Ms. Julie and her devoted assistant Gus (Giullian Yao Gioiello) bring the performing arts to a new generation of kids known as the “Greenies,” played by original puppet characters built by the renowned Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. The Greenies are a diverse group of kids who are mesmerized by all that the arts and creativity has to offer. Over the course of the season, with Ms. Julie’s guidance and inspiration from the visiting guest artists, the kids create an entirely original new show, that is a mashup of all the performing arts including mime, music, dance, improv, circus arts, voice and more.

Ms. Andrews commented that “this project represents the fulfilment of a long held dream to educate children about the wonder of the arts. I am thrilled to be partnering with my daughter and long time coauthor, Emma, to bring this show to life along with our co-creator, Judy Rothman-Rofė. We could not be more honored to be working with the extraordinary Jim Henson Company. We are equally delighted to be premiering as a Netflix original production.”

Julie’s Greenroom will be coming to Netflix in early 2017.

Andy Samberg and his Lonely Planet buddies talk ‘Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping’

popstar

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is one of a handful of films where the actors seem to be having as much fun as the audience members. Structured as a “mockumentary” in the same vein as This is Spinal Tap, Popstar packs enough laughter into its abbreviated 86 minutes running time that it almost guarantees big sales for the future DVD which will contain almost one-and-one-half hour more of outtakes and behind the scenes footage.

Popstar is the collaborative effort of The Lonely Island, a comedy trio formed between Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer back in 2001. An Internet staple, they’re already well known for a catalogue of digital shorts, including Dick in a Box and I Just Had Sex.

In Popstar, Samberg takes center stage as the egotistical rapper Conner4Real. A veteran of the boys’ band, Style Boys, Conner strikes out on his own, the operative phase being “strikes out.” His solo album tanks, and the accompanying tour isn’t much better after an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction lands him on the front page of USA Today.

It seems Conner can’t get a break. Even his carefully orchestrated marriage proposal to publicity obsessed Ashley goes terribly astray as a pack of runaway wolves sink their teeth into the singer Seal. Seal isn’t the only celebrity to risk life and limb for the star packed lineup of cameos also includes Justin Timberlake, Mariah Carey, Nas, Adam Levine, along with a few unexpected surprises.

How did Samberg, and his Lonely Island manage to assemble such a star-studded cast? At a press conference with his partners – Taccone and Schaffer, Samberg replied, “All kinds of ways. Some of them were people we worked with before, so we would just call them, or Email them. Some we did through reps, some people like Ringo Starr. Judd Apatow (the film’s producer) was the one who called.”

“We don’t have Ringo on speed dial, but yeah, we just sort of cast a really wide net and had a huge list of people we would love to be part of it, and we were actually really fortunate, a lot of them said ‘yes.’ Clearly, a ton of people.”

Another key component of Popstar is the music. What came first the songs or the storyline? Samberg, who cited the Beastie Boys and Run DMC as his personal early influences admitted it worked both ways. He elaborated, “We are a lot like real rappers, even though none of us can sing and we’re fake rappers. We get sent a ton of really awesome beats from various producers, and we’ll lock ourselves in the studio and listen to a ton of beats.

“Oftentimes, the beat itself will spark an idea, and we’ll start writing to it, or we’ll just love the beat, star it, and make sure to come back to it and try to think of an idea of it. Other times, we’ll have an idea for a song and we’ll know it has to be a certain kind of beat and we’ll straight up ask a producer to craft a beat from scratch to make that idea.”

What was the creative team’s personal favorite song in the movie? Both Samberg and Schaffer immediately replied that they were both partial to The Finest Girl AKA Bin Laden that was adapted for a Saturday Night Live skit.

Looking at today’s changing music industry, Samberg commented, “The thing that I think was at the forefront of what we felt was how much social media and the number of outlets that exist nowadays has changed the landscape of the music industry. That pertains to what is expected of an artist, and what they give up of their own personal life. The sort of relationship that musicians in the pop world have with their fans now, and how genuine this is for the sake of their careers, and how it affects their actual friendships and relationships in their lives.”

Justin Bieber immediately comes to mind as someone that Conner strives to emulate. The movie extends a degree of empathy towards him, while in the same breath Bieber also serves as a target for their verbal barbs. In response Samberg noted, “We definitely empathize with Justin, and are friendly with him. We’ve worked with him a few times and think he’s a good guy. We respect his music a lot, actually.

“There’s a couple direct references, obviously, to his documentary, because we just felt like they were funny jumping off points for a crazier joke. The title of this movie kind of feels like his title, which makes it seem like it’s a lot more about him, than we intended. We hope he likes it. We feel like the character of Conner is really an amalgam of everything that’s going on in the world of pop music and rap music for that matter,” he concluded.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is rated R for some graphic nudity, language throughout, sexual content and drug use. It opens in theaters June 3, 2016.

‘Quackerz’ – Movie Review

quackerz
When two very different groups of ducks come together, they provide some interesting and funny scenes for audiences, plus, there is a little bit of a Romeo and Juliet theme going on, minus the suicides. Quackerz takes audiences into a colorful animated world where ducks are the keepers of the sun. Well, not all ducks. Just the Mandarin ducks.

The Mandarin ducks live on a small island in China. Unbeknownst to little Longway, the Emperor’s son, he is the “Sun Duck” whose legacy it is to save the sun from going out. Unfortunately, according to the lore, he will die in the process, so his father keeps this all a secret from the little fellow, and doesn’t let anyone in the flock learn to fly, hoping this will save his son’s life.

Longway is bored. All he is allowed to do all day is to play his video games.

When a flock of Mallards mistakes the island for Hawaii, they encounter the Mandarin ducks. Unfortunately, the two groups don’t get along. The Emperor calls the Mallard General “stupid and fat.”

The General’s daughter Erica is a feisty, freethinking, fun loving duck who has been around the world. She longs for one place to call home. That’s the opposite of Longway, but the two hit it off and their forbidden relationship doesn’t stop them for being together.

As guardians of the sun, the Mandarin ducks are tasked with saving the earth against the evil witch of darkness. She hires two bumbling thieves to kidnap – or I should say ducknap – Longway to keep him from saving the planet. She has the power to shrink the sun and destroy life, and Longway has the power to save everyone.

It ultimately comes down to the fact that the two duck groups, the peaceful Mandarins and the military Mallards must work together for the sake of the planet.

There are some pretty cool CGI scenes with exquisite scenery. Besides the basic story, some cute lines and adorable expressions by the ducks make this an amusing animated film for kids. Granted, it’s not an award-winning caliber animated film, but it does have some cute qualities and a pretty fun hero in Longway.

Quackerz opens in theaters June 3, 2016 and will be available on VOD, a Blu-ray Combo Pack, and DVD June 14. It’s rated PG for rude and suggestive humor, and some action.

Disney’s Babies Plush Collection

Can you say adorable? That’s exactly what this line of stuffed animals is. The folks at Disney Store have taken some of the most beloved animal characters as well as a few human ones, and created baby versions of them for kids to snuggle with.

baby stitch
Not only are these baby versions of the characters endearing with innocence and sweetness, they each come swaddled in their own blanket. Before giving these to your child, clip their plastic ties to disconnect the plush characters from their blankets. Velcro snaps allow little fingers to wrap their baby in the blanket to put them safely down for a nap.

These little guys are 10 inches of cuteness. And their blankets match their personalities and the movies from which they come.

babystitchblanket
For instance, Stitch lives in the warm island of Kauai with Lilo. His blanket has a Hawaiian print and the closure has a little guitar so he will remember, “Elvis was the king.” At least, that’s what Lilo always says. And even in the tropics, a blanket is necessary from time to time, especially for a little baby.

baby svenOn the other side of the world, Norway is a cold climate. Baby Sven come wrapped in a blanket that represents the designs of the land. And his blanket has a felt snowflake on the Velcro closure.

Besides these two sweet babies, there is a baby Cheshire Cat, a baby Queen of Hearts, Baby Marie for kitty lovers, Baby Mickey, baby Elsa, baby Lady for puppy lovers, Baby Simba, a baby Yeti, and more. These items are only available in the Disney Parks and at the Disney Store online.

If you have a new baby in your home, perhaps think about getting one of these for another child in the house. This way he/she can wrap his or her own little baby in a soft blanket and snuggle with it.

The Disney’s Babies Plush collection is appropriate for ages 2 and up.

‘Zootopia’ on Combo Pack

zootopia
“Anyone can be anything.” That’s what little Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) thinks about the city of Zootopia. This optimistic and plucky little rabbit wants to make the world a better place, and she gets her chance in the hit animated movie Zootopia.

Judy followed her dream and became the first bunny cop on the ZPD (Zootopia Police Department). Her eagerness for the job is not dampened when she is assigned parking duty. Oh no. When she is tasked with writing 100 parking tickets, she sets her sights on writing 200. But she suddenly finds herself in the middle of a giant missing mammal case.

Judy and her new acquaintance Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), a sly but sweet fox, are on the trail of a missing otter. There have been 14 cases of missing mammals. Together, this unlikely pair manages to get to the bottom of a sophisticated plot and uncover the mastermind. Along the way they form a friendship that gets them through some tough times, and even sets the stage for a sequel if the powers that be at Disney decide to continue their story. They are both fun characters, and Judy is a great role model for boys and girls. She is steadfast in following her dreams. After all, if she doesn’t try, she won’t know if she can succeed. That’s a great lesson for everyone.

The bonus features include a look at how the filmmakers researched animal behavior by first visiting Disney Animal Kingdom in Florida, then traveling to Africa where they figured out which animals were going to be what kind of characters in the film. Their big ah-ha moment was at a watering hole, which was a peaceful place where animals came together, and that became the foundation for the city of Zootopia.

The filmmakers pitched three stories to Executive Producer John Lasseter, all featuring animals in clothing, which appealed to Lasseter. Looks at the characters, environments, and animation as well as the score are featured in bonuses. Lasseter said he wanted a “world music vibe” with a “hip vibe” when it came to the score.

Keep your eyes open during the movie for signs of Big Hero 6, hidden Mickeys, Frozen, Tangled, Moana, and even Oswald. Those clever folks at Disney always manage to include hints of their past and future films and characters. A music video with Shakira, deleted scenes, and a look at some characters that didn’t make it into the film round out the bonuses.

Zootopia is rated PG for some thematic elements, rude humor and action.
