‘Love Finds You in Valentine’ on DVD

lovefindsyou
Based on the popular novel, Love Finds You in Valentine is another story from the “Love Finds You” series about finding love and destiny. This story is about a law student living in Los Angeles who travels to the quaint town of Valentine, Nebraska to undertake the sale of her family’s ranch. What she discovers is that she is happier in Valentine with the fresh air, rolling hills, and friendly people than she is in the high-powered world of the big city.

Kennedy Blaine (Michaela McManus) never knew much about her family, but she discovers everything when, according to her father’s will, she must take care of the selling of the ranch in person, so she travels to Valentine with the intention of signing the documents. What she learns is that her mother, a Morgan, married the love of her life, a Blaine. The two families had been feuding for generations. After her mother ran off with her father, neither of them spoke much about their past lives in Valentine. And Kennedy never knew her grandfather (Ed Asner).

The first person she meets is the ranch foreman, Derek (Diogo Morgado), who lives with his mother (Lindsay Wagner) on the property. But Kennedy also meets a cousin who is anxious to get her John Hancock on the papers to sell the property.

The more she learns about Valentine the more she feels at home there. And the more time she spends there, the more she realizes something is screwy. Why does her cousin want her to sell so badly? What’s really going on?

Kennedy also learns about her family history and the ranch from Derek, who eventually warms up to the city girl. With secrets of his own, this man keeps his distance from her, but the attraction between them is difficult to ignore.

So, with Derek’s past coming back to haunt him and maybe put everyone in jeopardy, and her cousin pushing her to sell the ranch, there are plenty of things going on in Valentine that intrigue Kennedy. But the most important thing is the connection she feels to this land. It was where her parents grew up. It was their home. Now that they are both deceased, Kennedy feels like this might be her home as well.

Love Finds You in Valentine is a nice little story, especially for Valentine’s Day viewing. Like all the “Love Finds You” movies, this one leaves viewers feeling good, content, and hopeful. And the scenery is spectacular. It was actually filmed in a small town in Ohio and could end up being an ad for tourism Millersburg and Dover, Ohio. It’s that charming.

Love Finds You in Valentine is not rated however it is appropriate for all ages. Unfortunately, there are no bonus features on the DVD.

‘Hail, Caesar!’ On Combo Pack

hailcaesar
This whacky comedy pays tribute to old Hollywood, actors, and movies as it spoofs several genres while at the same time bringing the old studio system front and center. Set in the early 1950s, Hail, Caesar! has its share of laugh-out-loud moments.

Josh Brolin stars as the head of Capitol Pictures Eddie Mannix. This guy solves all the problems on the sets, behind the scenes, and orchestrates the personal lives of his actors.

Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) is a movie star in the same vane as a Charleston Heston or Richard Burton. He’s currently filming a movie called “Hail Caesar!” A group of Hollywood communists, an element of the story that brings up the mood of the time when the cold war was looming large in the consciousness of the people, kidnaps Whitlock. It’s now up to Mannix to get his star back while at the same time keeping everything working smoothly at the studio.

This all takes place in one day as not only the kidnapping is playing out, but also other movies are being filmed on the lot. The other films add the whimsy to this story.

First there is a cowboy star, Hobie Doyle (Alden Ehrenreich), who has a following for his western movies. He’s a singing cowboy, but is suddenly out of his element when he is cast as a suave, sophisticated man in a new film. This guy does his best to please the director Laurence Laurentz (Ralph Fiennes), who is dumbfounded why this cowboy is suddenly cast in his dramatic film.

Then there’s the Esther Williams-type actress DeeAnna Moran (Scarlett Johansson) who always looks great in the water but on dry land she finds herself in the middle of a personal dilemma. Mannix is pulling all his strings to fix her situation while at the same time juggling the other problems of the studio along with a pair of gossip columnists (both played by Tilda Swinton) who are each looking for a big scoop.

And finally, a Fred Astaire/Donald O’Connor/Gene Kelly singing and dancing star, Burt Gurney (Channing Tatum), is rehearsing his number complete with with tap dancing and all the trimmings.

This is a fun little film filled with whimsy and wit, while at the same time showing Hollywood in the 1950s.

Bonus features on the Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD include looks at how the Coen brothers make their films. There are also comparisons between the characters in the film and those in old Hollywood. It’s also interesting to see how the communist threat of the day played into this story.

The movie might not have been produced had it not been for Clooney’s continual efforts to have the Coen brothers make it. He says it was listed in the IMDB site before there was even a script because he had often spoken about it in public and people thought it was a done deal. His persuasion was the push the producers needed to finally make this film that they had been thinking about for years. The actors discuss their characters and making the movie and there are plenty of other interesting tidbits in these bonus features.

Hail, Caesar! is rated PG-13 for some suggestive content and smoking.

Paranoia and tension-filled ‘Bloodline’ Season 2 returns on May 27

Bloodline_205_unit_00681RC
I am one of those people who follow good material, whether they are show creators or actors. Last March I did just that! How can I pass up an opportunity to watch the first drama developed by creators Daniel Zelman, Todd A. and Glen Kessler after their critical darling Damages? On top of that, Bloodline was Kyle Chandler’s big return to television fans of Friday Night Lights had been waiting for!

Glen Kessler flew to Austin with just an idea of a family drama (they call it an ‘experiment’) and convinced Chandler to play a very different role from his Emmy-winning upstanding father and Coach Taylor. He jumped at the opportunity to show a contrasting side to Coach Taylor. After all, Detective John Rayburn is “outside my wheelhouse of things I’ve done,” Chandler points out.

Throughout Damages, the creative trio enjoyed playing with viewers’ preconceived notions about actors and decided to take advantage of Chandler’s upright image. ”Coach Taylor was an honest man,” says Chandler. “I have this foundation of honesty. Then, when my character does bad things, people will still think, ‘Cut him a break. He must have a reason.’’’

Netflix’s Bloodline centers around the Rayburn clan deeply rooted in the Florida Keys. The first season was a slow-burning drama about this seemingly normal and hardworking Rayburn family and the frenzy and unrest Danny (Ben Mendelsohn), their black sheep eldest son, generated when he returned home for his parents’ 45th anniversary. After the first hour of the show, it was apparent that John, the golden boy, is the one who is going to do something about the black sheep.

Although some critics doubt how Bloodline 2 can top the brilliant first season with a jaw-dropping ending, I totally disagree. They needed the setup to see how the deaths of Danny and the Rayburn patriarch Robert (Sam Shepard) affect the family. The second season is exactly what the creator trio wanted to tell; family secrets, birth order, expectations, and siblings dynamics.

Now that the rotten apple has been eliminated, the remaining siblings have to pay the consequences. John and the younger siblings, Kevin (Nobert Leo Butz) and Meg (Linda Cardellini), are at each other’s throats all the time. Slowly but surely the unifying force crumbles because they now have to face their own fear, guilt, shame, resentment, and pain. John is haunted by Danny and has to deal with the Rayburn matriarch Sally (Sissy Spacek), Danny’s son (?) Nolan (Owen Teague), the local drug distributor, his detective partner Marco (Enrique Murciano), and many more. It’s John against the whole world since he doesn’t have any body to confide in. It’s exhausting to watch John enduring calamities from within and without, but it’s one of the best human drama series available.

This so-called ‘experiment’ truly works! You can’t go wrong if you follow good material from the Kesslers & Zelman, and Chandler. It’s well worth your time joining John Rayburn’s tumultuous journey – if your heart can take it.

‘Zapped’ on DVD

zapped
Before he was Charles in Charge, Scott Baio was Chachi in the popular sitcom Happy Days. And after he was Tommy Bradford in the TV series Eight is Enough Willie Aames was Buddy Lembeck in Charles in Charge. However, before these two teen stars joined forced in Charles in Charge, they teamed up in the 1982 teen comedy film Zapped!

Zapped it the story of Barnie (Baio), a high school science nerd whose experiment goes awry leaving him with a supernatural talent. He has the ability to move things with his mind. When his scheming best friend Peyton (Aames) learns about this, he plots to use his buddy’s talent to impress a girl and for financial gain.

Peyton has no morals. He will do and say anything to get the class sexpot (Heather Thomas). Barnie is only interested in the scientific aspect of his newfound ability, but when pushed far enough, he uses it for fun and also personal gain. Imagine the school’s losing baseball team finally winning due to their amazing – and instant – talents. But it is Barnie who is making the ball go farther and his teammates jump higher than normal to catch the ball. You get the idea. It is quite a feat for these ballplayers.

In the meantime, Bernadette (Felice Schachter) learns about Barnie’s new talent and teams up with him for the advancement of science. But that’s not all their friendship offers. For the first time in his life Barnie has a girlfriend and Bernadette is his perfect partner. That is until Peyton talks his buddy into spending the night at a frat house where Barnie makes the roulette wheel stop in their favor. Yep, Peyton is not the best influence on this guy, but their friendship is deep and they really do care about each other.

This is a whacky teen story filled with high school antics combined with the supernatural talent of this science nerd with a heart of gold. There are plenty of bare breasts due to Barnie’s ability to unbutton sweaters and blouses with his mind.

Zapped! has some cute elements, however Peyton is an obnoxious character that viewers will undoubtedly dislike to the core. Barnie, on the other hand, is well meaning and good hearted.

Zapped! is rated R due to nudity, drugs, and sexual situations.

New TV Shows for Memorial Day and Beyond

JOJO FLETCHER
Remember when late May meant a steady season of reruns? Those days are long passed. Earlier this week ABC’s latest Bachelorette JoJo Fletcher met her 26 suitors. Host Chris Harrison promised “some crazy dynamic characters and maybe one of the wildest guys that Bachelor fans will love to hate.” Could it be the chap in Santa Claus garb?

And what about that small town Texas man of the cloth who answers to the name Preacher? Adapted from the craziest ‘90s comic book, Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) gets possessed by a super natural entity that gives him special powers of persuasion. Custer sets out to track down God with an assist from his short fused ex-girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Negga) and his Irish vampire buddy Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun). The AMC series has a credible pedigree, thanks to executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and development credits attributed to Sam Catlin of Breaking Bad fame.

Still a bit confused? AMC will air a live after show titled Talking Preacher on May 29. Hosted by comic Chris Hardwick the hour-long show will feature cast, creators, producers and celebrity fans discussing the supernatural dark comedy.

Netflix rolls out the second season premiere of Bloodline on May 27. The Florida Keys supplies the backdrop for the drama about dysfunctional sibling alliances, and it looks like John (Kyle Chandler) Meg (Linda Cardellini) and Kevin (Norbert Leo Butz) must pony up for what they did to their brother Danny (Ben Mendelsohn). Is Danny’s estranged son the genuine article, and why has newcomer Ozzy (John Leguizamo) suddenly appeared?

In 1977, ABC premiered the groundbreaking miniseries Roots. Based on Alex Haley’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, it ran for 12 hours on eight consecutive nights. Haley later confessed that the storyline was a mix of fact and fiction. Nevertheless, the series succeeded in sparking a national conversation about America’s legacy of slavery.

The finale attracted 100 million viewers making it the third highest rated United States entertainment program ever measured by Nielsen. Roots was been topped only by the series finale of M*A*S*H* and Dallas’s “Who Shot J.R?” episode.

Taking into account current headlines, Mark Wolper, whose father David was Roots’ original producer and maintained the rights, decided to “translate the story into today’s television vocabulary.” The characters’ identities remain unchanged, but some of the history surrounding them has been altered.

Six months and hundreds of auditions later the key role of Kunta Kinte went to British actor Malachi Kirby, who has never done American TV. Another young Londoner, Rege-Jean Page appears as the flamboyant Chicken George, originally portrayed by Ben Vereen in 1977.

As an insurance policy Wolper has beef up the ranks with recognizable names like Jonathan Rhys Meyer, Matthew Goode and James Purefoy playing slave owners, with Forest Whitaker as Fiddler (a role that garnered Louis Gossetts Jr. an Emmy in the original. Adding some new faces and characters, Anna Paquin and Mekhi Phifer portray a Southern belle and her coachman, who share a serious secret, while Laurence Fishburne shows up as Haley in the final episode.

Signing on as a producing partner, History Channel, along with A&E and Lifetime will air the new Roots over four consecutive nights starting May 30.

Steve Harvey’s Little Big Shots confirmed the appeal of pint sized performers. Following suit, FOX is restricting its 13th season of So You Think You Can Dance to candidates between the ages of eight and 13 when it returns on May 30. Open auditions were held in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles with the field dwindled down to 100 kids, who moved onto the Academy where they are being trained by acclaimed professionals. Host Cat Deeley will introduce the audience to the 10 finalists.

An affordable alternative to two tickets on the aisle, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Ian McKellen recreate Ronald Hawrood’s moving play The Dresser via Starz on May 30. Raging against the passage of time, McKellen assists the thespian in preparing for his 227nd appearance as King Lear, a role that mirrors Hopkins character’s approaching panic and dementia.
America's Got Talent - Season 11What began as a skit for Saturday Night Live’s 40th Anniversary special has morphed into a new six-episode NBC series titled Maya & Marty.. That’s short for Maya Rudolph and Martin Short, who promise celebrity guests (first nighters are Paul Rudd and Larry David), sketches and musical numbers in an edgy modern day spin on variety shows. The NBC series premieres May 31.

He’s back! TV’s biggest talent show America’s Got Talent returns May 31 to NBC with Simon Cowell filling Howard Stern’s vacated seat for Season 11. Returning to the dais are supermodel Heidi Klum, comedian Howie Mandel and former Spice Girl B.

As co-creator and executive producer of America’s Got Talent and its British counterparts – The X Factor, and Britain’s Got Talent, Cowell has an unmistakable knick for spotting potential talent. Numbered among the acts that achieved future stardom under his guidance were One Direction, Susan Boyle, and Fifth Harmony.
