The Main Street Electrical Parade is back!

It’s hard to believe it has been 50 years since Disneyland introduced The Main Street Electrical Parade. Over these last five decades the parade has come and gone various times. But every time it returns, it returns to cheers and love. For many of us, this is the ultimate Disney parade. Sure, there are others that are entertaining and as enjoyable, however the iconic Main Street Electrical Parade stands above all the others in its magic. It is the epitome of what we refer to as “Disney Magic.”

To celebrate the return of this beloved parade, there are many updates. The electronic music is still there, so take my word for it, days after you leave the park you will still have that upbeat tune dancing in your head. The electronic musical score based on “Baroque Hoedown” by Jean-Jacques Perrey and Gershon Kingsley is nothing short of mesmerizing. And that pairs perfectly with the colorful parade.

The iconic drum that leads off the parade has been updated to reflect the 50thAnniversary. And righty so. This parade is an attraction that, in days of old, would be referred to as an “E Ticket.” It is a must-see for park guests.

Maybe it is because the parade has been absent for awhile, but the lights and colors seem much brighter this time. The sights and sounds of all the floats, along with the human characters that also sport lights on their costumes, bring together an experience that is not only magical, but also memorable. It is, to put it bluntly, an electric experience.

So, what can guests expect when they watch this iconic spectacle? Plenty. As a matter of fact, the finale float is different on each side so to see it all you must view the parade from both sides of the street. And that is easy to do because the parade is scheduled to run twice a night. Check the times when you enter the park because schedules do vary.

The spinning bugs seem to get the most cheers. They are colorful and musical, and definitely have their own personalities. Elliott the dragon also has a large contingent of fans. The parade depicts scenes from Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Pinocchio.

The large finale float has dolls done in the Mary Blair design. This is the woman who brought us the memorable dolls in “It’s a Small World” for the 1964 Fair.  The float is led by The Blue Fairy and depicted on this wonderful two-sided float are characters from Encanto (Mirabel and Antonio), The Jungle Book (Mowgli), Raya and the Last Dragon (Raya), Aladdin (Aladdin and Jasmin), Coco (Miguel), Mulan (Mulan), Brave (Merida), The Princess and the Frog (Tiana), Frozen (Anna and Elsa), Moana (Moana), Hercules (Baby Hercules), and Pocahontas(Pocahontas). Then following this amazing float is a colorful depiction of the castle. Mary Blair had such an influence on the Disney organization and her spirit is alive in this parade.

While the finale float passes by the folks at Disney have an added visual element. Let’s face it; they always pay attention to details. So projections on the buildings on Main Street add a little extra magic to this grand finale.

The Main Street Electrical Parade is a must-see for guests to Disneyland. In my opinion, it should be a staple in the park, but they don’t listen to me. At this time I cannot tell you how long the parade will remain.

There are also additional treats offered to celebrate the parade, including the parade macaron at the Jolly Holiday Bakery Café, two special churro flavors, celebratory popcorn mixes and more. And at several locations throughout the park, while supplies last, guests can snack in electrifying style with the all-new light-up Elliott dragon premium bucket and light- up turtle premium sipper. (Limit two per item per guest and availability may vary throughout the summer season.)

Clothing, adorable wishables, a special Loungefly backpack, commemorative ears headband, a beautiful mug, and more are available to purchase (remember it is Disney and they are tops at merching) to remember this wonderful event.

All I can say is, “hallelujah.” I am excited for the return of this magical, musical spectacular. And if the folks at Disney are reading this, I urge them to keep the parade. It is the embodiment of what Walt Disney had in mind when he created Disneyland. It is a spectacular for all ages and filled with everything that made Disneyland The Happiest Place on Earth.

“Sketchbook’ on Disney+ is all about the pictures and the people

The newest documentary series on Disney+ is an interesting education about the creators who have drawn some of the most memorable characters in Disney films: Kuzco, Olaf, The Genie, Captain Hook, Mirabel, and Simba.

This series of shorts looks at how to draw the six characters as viewers get instructions about the art of animation. Besides learning about how to draw them, viewers also learn a little about the characters but they also get background on the animators themselves.  Every animator has a different story about how they got to where they are.

This series is a brief look at how hopes and dreams have become reality for six people who bring fun and fantasy to life. While watching the characters evolve, viewers learn about all kinds of things related to them and their stories. It’s a sneak peek into the background of the characters and the artists.

With a little patience and some trial and errors, viewers might just get comfortable drawing their own characters. Hey, it’s worth a try. And these animators make the drawing process look easy. (Of course it’s not.)

Gabby Capili – Draws Kuzco – Emperor’s New Groove
Hyun-Min Lee – Draws Olaf – Frozen
Eric Goldberg – Draws Genie – Aladdin
Jin Kim – Draws Captain Hook – Peter Pan
Samantha Vilfort – Draws Mirabel – Encanto
Mark Henn – Draws Young Simba – The Lion King

So pick up a pencil and get some paper. Check out Sketchbook and see what you can learn about these characters.

‘The Duke’ arrives in theaters

From Sony Pictures Classics comes The Duke, a film not about John Wayne or Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, but about the Duke of Wellington. Actually, it’s not about the Duke of Wellington per se but rather it’s about his portrait. The movie is dramatic but also very funny with a talented cast and a story plucked from the headlines of 1961.

Kempton Bunton (Jim Broadbent) is a bumbling, talkative cabdriver married to a straight-laced woman (Helen Mirren). Their son takes after the father, to the dismay of Mrs. Bunton. Kempton is a self-proclaimed crusader for the common man, and his latest campaign is to get free television licenses for the public.

When the government purchases a Goya painting of the Duke of Wellington to display at the National Gallery, Bumpton is infuriated. For the price of the painting thousands of Brits could get free television.

Then the painting is stolen and lo-and-behold it is unwrapped in the Bunton house. Spinning a web of lies to keep the secret of the stolen painting, Kempton manages to evade the police while trying to keep his marriage on stable ground. Then he comes up with a brilliant plan to offer the painting back in return for television licenses for the public.

More deception and deceit along with some funny gaffs lead Bunton down a path of hysterical lies as he sets out determined to help the common man. Then he decides to return the painting to the gallery and is charged with the theft of the Duke. The trial is a comedy of errors, as Kempton is basically a stand-up comic in the courtroom, all the while keeping his demeanor with a dry expression on his face.

This true British crime and trial is the stuff of comedy dreams. And Broadbent shines as the sweet, well-meaning but sometimes dense man who feels he has to do something good for others.

With an A-list cast and a story ripped from the headlines, The Duke is sure to raise the attention of history fans that have not heard about this historic heist. It is the only successful heist at the National Gallery. The movie will leave audiences feeling good.

The film opens in theaters April 22, 2022. The Duke is rated R for language and brief sexuality.

Discover more about Queen Victoria in a new 3-part series

True Royalty TV, a leading streaming service for history and royalty, has released a series about Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria: In Her Own Words sheds light on the thoughts and feelings of this monarch.

Through her journals, in which she wrote practically every day, viewers get up close and personal with Victoria. She writes about her inner feelings upon first meeting Albert, then how her heart raced when she met him for the second time. In the beginning he was a bit of a wuss, as one historian describes. But he outgrew that and upon his return to Britain he was more of a man. And this man stole Victoria’s heart.

She comes across as being extremely sensual and sexual and her writing is, at times, blunt about her desires. Let’s face it, she had nine children so she definitely enjoyed the pleasures of her husband.

Viewers learn about her life as a young child and how she grew up in what was called “The Kensington System,” in which she was shielded from people and harm and only allowed to sleep with her mother. Her mother knew one day Victoria would be queen so there was no way she was going to subject her daughter to any potential harm in any way. The poor little child was forced to hold the hand of someone when she descended the stairs. Her life was not her own.

Then one night she became the Queen of England, and this young woman began to take control of her own life. Although her first years as sovereign were turbulent, it was when she married Albert that her reign truly took off.

The couple shared a passion and joy for life and upon his death her state of mind was truly bereft. She retreated from the public’s eye and wore black until her death. Victoria was devastated by the loss of Albert but went on later in her life to have two additional relationships. These are also documented in the film.

Victoria and Albert were responsible for creating a dynasty that spread over Europe. Her children were married off to royals in other countries where they hoped by joining the countries through marriage, peace would take hold. But that was not to be, as we know.

This is a fascinating biography because not only does it entail the insights and facts from historians, but it also shows Victoria’s own thoughts and words from her personal journals. As an actor reads the words, Victoria’s life comes back to life and we get a better sense of the young girl who grew into a formidable woman.

Queen Victoria: In Her Own Words is available now to stream on True Royalty TV.

‘Moonfall’ is now available for home viewing

Moonfall is a combination of a disaster movie and a Sci-fi story. It really isn’t a great film but there are some good visuals and on the home video release the bonus features make it more interesting.

Patrick Wilson stars as Astronaut Brian Harper. On his last mission with Astronaut Jocinda Fowler (Halle Berry) they encountered a problem, which Harper described to the authorities. He was silenced because he insisted what he saw was not explainable however the authorities placed the blame on human error and Harper was ousted from NASA.

He basically became a pariah and lost not only his job but also his family.

Flash forward several years and things are about to change not only for Harper, but also for the world. The moon is losing its orbit and getting closer to the Earth. What in the world is going on? Well, according to KC Houseman (John Bradley), a self-proclaimed astronomer, the moon is not a natural object but a Megastructure, created by aliens. Now, for some reason, the megastructure is losing its power.

It comes down to these three to save the planet. At the end, the history of humankind on Earth is revealed.

That, in a nutshell, is the premise of the show. What the bonus features offer are glimpses into the characters, the story, and the history of the story. It began with the notion of megastructures and the possibility that AI will evolve and decide to take over. In the process they must eliminate mankind. That might not be as farfetched as it seems. After all, AI is evolving all the time. So just how safe is humanity from destruction from AI?

Perhaps the most interesting bonus is a history of human involvement and fascination with the moon. Looking back through hundreds of years the evolution of man’s knowledge about the moon has evolved. Our understanding of the solar system has grown immensely, thanks to space travel and satellites. This feature also looks at the history of NASA and the space race of the 1960s. It is a good lesson in history and astronomy.  Additional bonus features also shed light on the characters and the making of the film.

If this film and story is interesting to you, you should also check out the 2000 Gary Sinise film Mission to Mars, which also focuses on the evolution of humans on earth but with a different explanation.

Moonfall is available on a 2-disc 4K Ultra HD (with a Blu-ray disc), as well as a single Blu-ray and a DVD disc. Moonfall is rated PG-13 for violence, disaster action, strong language and some drug use.

‘Anatomy of a Scandal’ — The #MeToo version of ‘The Good Wife’

Based on Sarah Vaughan’s best-selling 2018 novel of the same name, the Netflix limited series Anatomy of a Scandal is a high society psychological thriller and riveting courtroom drama about the duplicitous nature of Britain’s rich and powerful.

A political elite born and bred, James Whitehouse (Rupert Friend) has always asserted smart decisions and bloody hard work are solely responsible for his rapid upward trajectory of his political career as well as his picture-perfect private life. On the other hand, his doting wife Sophie (Sienna Miller) believes good luck has played a major part in her blissful life until poof!—it’s gone out the window! James is accused of sexually assaulting Olivia Lytton (Naomi Scott), a young parliamentary researcher with whom he cheated.

The road is paved in #MeToo landmines in modern day Westminster. James is quite annoyed at the criminal trial putting the kibosh on his privileged elite life, but he resolutely believes in the family motto — “The Whitehouses always come up on top.”

Pressured by a fixer to the Prime Minister, James’ childhood buddy and partner in crime, Sophie has to sit through the trial because her presence speaks volumes about his character. Unfortunately she is not spared the disturbing details of the incident in the House of Commons as well as the spectacle of his unchecked wealth, privilege and power on display. Apparently, the assault was triggered by an article accusing James of being “breathtakingly arrogant.” The more she learns about his high and mighty attitude, the more she realizes she has buried her head in the sand about his despicable and sinister side. Is James a garden-variety philanderer or an unfeeling brute who takes his pent-up frustration and anger out on his social and intellectual inferiors?

Queen’s Counsel Kate Woodcroft (Michelle Dockery) has built her reputation prosecuting sexual abusers in cases that aren’t clear cut. This “journey from yes to no” relationship rape case is right up her alley. Kate is utterly convinced of his guilt and hell-bent on making him pay for his alleged crimes. Although whip-smart and tough as nails, Kate starts to unravel under the tremendous pressure from both within and without.

Lurking beneath this picture-perfect couple are their Oxford days in the early 1990s when a wild phase of drunken parties and robust sexual encounters was excused and forgiven with the “boys will be boys” rationale. The privileged and entitled young couple handled their schoolmates — the future PM Tom Southern, Alec Fisher, Holly Berry and Alison Jessop — as means to an end for their dangerous acts with little consequence. Who would have thought that the skeletons in the closet could come back to haunt them big time decades later?

The premise of Anatomy of a Scandal is similar to my all time favorite drama The Good Wife (CBS, 2009 – 16). Through her crosses and losses over 156 episodes, Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) transformed into ‘the free woman.’ Sophie, on the other hand, learned her lessons in merely six episodes! I’m not being facetious – maybe just a little bit – but Sophie, the #MeToo version of Alicia minus a job, gets a sudden flash of insight; she has always been part of the problem. Stay woke. Too many embarrassed and humiliated wives remain in the problem camp perpetuating sexism, gender inequality, classism, and unchecked privilege.

Anatomy of a Scandal premieres Friday, April 15 on Netflix.

The Nighttime Spectaculars return to the Disneyland Resort

Finally the much-anticipated nighttime spectaculars return to the Disneyland Resort on April 22, 2022.

Perhaps the most anticipated event is the “Main Street Electrical Parade.” This is a favorite among Disney fans, myself included. With the colorful lights and mesmerizing, not to mention addicting, music, this parade delights all ages. And I do mean ALL ages.

Upon the return of the spectacular, the folks at Disney have added additional floats. To commemorate the new film Encanto, there is a colorful depiction of the Madrigal casitas along with the characters from that film. Moana also appears in the updated parade as well as Elsa, Anna, Pocahontas, Aladdin, Jasmine, Mulan, Miguel and others. The grand finale consists of seven segments representing 14 different Disney stories. It stretches 118 feet long. Wow. With a brightly decorated version of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, this is a nighttime spectacular deserving of the word “spectacular.”

For those of us who are familiar with this beautiful parade, it might be strange to think it is celebrating its 50 anniversary. It has come and gone from the parks several times. But thank goodness it has returned.

The “Disneyland Forever” fireworks show is also back. It can be viewed from several locations around Disneyland, with projections and special effects accompanying the music and the sparkling displays overhead. The updated spectacular includes two original songs: the theme Live the Magic and Kiss Goodnight have been added to the show.

Check the times and dates for these Disneyland Nighttime Spectaculars as they do change during the seasons.

Also, to celebrate its 30th anniversary is “Fantasmic!” returns. This is a colorful spectacular representing classic Disney films with enchanting music. “Fantasmic!” returns May 28, 2022.

Also returning to life on April 22, 2022 is “World of Color” at Disney California Adventure. Paradise Bay is the location for the spectacular water show showcasing many of the Disney characters and films. As the scenes play out on the water sprays, guests will definitely be enchanted by the technology and wonder that the folks at Disney have captured. And you thought H2O was only good for swimming and drinking!

Besides the return of the nighttime spectaculars, guests will be able to purchase merchandise commemorating the shows. (What else? It’s Disney after all!)

Enjoy nighttime at the Disneyland Resort with the return of the wonderful and memorable nighttime spectaculars.

Bring home ‘American Flyers’ on Blu-ray

The 1985 film American Flyers is a fun and sentimental journey through the Rocky Mountains. In one of his first major starring roles, Kevin Costner delivers an outstanding performance opposite David Marshall Grant, Rae Dawn Chong, and Alexandra Paul.

Marcus Sommers (Costner) is a past bicycle-racing hero but has not raced in years. He is now a sports doctor working alongside his partner Dr. Conrad (John Amos). When his brother David (Grant) comes to town the story goes from a sports film to a sibling-bonding story.

Their father had died from an inherited disease and now David wants to find out if he has the gene. While the two brothers swipe jabs at each other and David undergoes tests, they decide to enter the Hell of the West bicycle race that Marcus had won years earlier. Marcus’ girlfriend Sarah (Chong) comes along to drive the van and along the way David meets Becky (Paul) who ends up joining the team. Now the foursome takes on the rugged terrain of the Rocky Mountains in a grueling and physically challenging race.

The camaraderie between racers is non-existent. Marcus’ old teammate Muzzin (Luca Bercovici) is on an opposing team now and there is a lot of animosity between the two. Yet Marcus challenges his brother to keep going and keep peddling and not to let the other racers get in his head. As the two continue to advance in the race, their relationship grows. David and Marcus discover their brotherhood is strong but there is a cruel twist of fate in store for the Sommers family.

The race named “Hell of the West” is grueling both physically and mentally, but for the Sommers brothers, their bond is what keeps them going. And with the help of Sarah and Becky, the foursome confronts challenges on and off the road.

This is an interesting and entertaining film and definitely a keeper. The photography and scenery is outstanding and it is fun to see Costner when he was starting out. Of course, he was in the 1983 film The Big Chill however fans of that movie know all his scenes were left on the cutting room floor. Someday it would be nice if the studio released those scenes.

Listen for the addictive title song. American Flyers is rated PG-13 however it is suitable for most viewers. This 2022 release from Warner Archive is a brand new 1080p HD Master making it visually stunning. It can purchased at the Warner Archive Amazon Store or online retailers where DVDs and Blu-rays® are sold.

Bring home 2 Rock Hudson Blu-rays

Kino Lorber has released two films starring 1960’s romantic comedy headliner Rock Hudson.

Man’s Favorite Sport?

Man’s Favorite Sport?
is an adorable 1964 film with Hudson and Paula Prentiss. There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments along with a fun story.

Hudson is Roger Willoughby, the top salesperson at a major sporting goods store. Willoughby is known for his expertise when it comes to fishing. He has guided many fishermen to trophies. The thing is, Roger has never fished a day in his life. He relies on feedback from his customers then passes the information on. He has written a book about fishing and through his deception has become known as a top fisherman.

Everything is going well for Roger until Abigail Page (Prentiss) and her friend Isolde (Easy) Mueller (Maria Perschy) come into his life. They have entered Willoughby into a fishing competition to help the local resort. While Roger tries to get out of the tournament and still keep his reputation, he is ultimately forced to take part.

Not only has Roger never fished but he has also never camped or done any outside activities. It is up to Abigail and Easy to help him save face during the competition.

There are too many comical scenes to describe. The entire movie is one laugh after another and definitely a show both men and women will enjoy. Hudson plays his usual adorable character with Prentiss following along as his new on-screen love interest. It is too bad they were not paired for more films. They are a great rom/com duo.

There is a new Audio Commentary by Filmmaker/Historian Michael Schlesinger with Select Remarks by Co-Star Paula Prentiss and Actor/Director Richard Benjamin on this special edition Blu-ray.

Strange Bedfellows

Two years after Man’s Favorite Sport? Hudson was teamed with Gina Lollobrigida in Strange Bedfellows. This is a cute show but not as entertaining and delightful as his 1964 movie.

Hudson is Carter Harrison, a successful businessman who meets Toni (Lollobrigida) and instantly falls in love. It is mutual and the two get married immediately. But when they return to earth from their love-induced blur, they quickly realize they are incompatible. They are complete opposites.

Toni is a bohemian artist who pickets and protests for all kinds of causes. Carter is a down-to-earth buttoned-up businessman. After seven years apart, they meet to finally get a divorce. But will their old feelings derail this legal proceeding?

There is a new Audio Commentary by Film Historian Eddy Von Mueller on this Blu-ray release.
