Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit Combo Pack

shadowChris Pine takes over the role of the iconic Jack Ryan character created by Tom Clancy. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is the prequel, so to speak, to the other Ryan films. It tells the story of how Ryan was recruited by the CIA and his first “mission” to save the world.

Keira Knightley co-stars with Pine as Cathy Muller, Jack Ryan’s girlfriend who accidentally stumbles on his secret job and ends up becoming an asset in his undercover activities. Also starring in this film is Kevin Costner who plays Thomas Harper, the man who recruited Ryan into the CIA and who is his handler in his first mission. Costner’s somewhat laid back character adds a great deal of humor to the intense story.

Jack Ryan uncovers a plot that will destabilize the American economy and bring down the country. He also discovers a simultaneous plan to bomb somewhere in the U.S.

Over the years Jack Ryan has been played by Harrison Ford (Clear and Present Danger in 1994 and Patriot Games in 1992), Alec Baldwin in The Hunt for Red October in 1990, and Ben Affleck in The Sum of All Fears in 2002).

Bonus features on this DVD + Blu-Ray + Digital HD combo pack include several featurettes. In “Jack Ryan: The Smartest Guy in the Room,” the character is described as “not your grandfather’s Jack Ryan.” Viewers get an in-depth insight into this film that was originally going to star Harrison Ford when the idea of a new Jack Ryan movie was being floated around. This movie is the only one, so far, not based on a Tom Clancy book. It is a “reinvented” and “reimagined” story of the famous CIA operative.

Another featurette looks at Sir Kenneth Branagh, who not only plays the villain in the film, but also directed the movie. Branagh’s directing style is discussed. He “takes pleasure in his job” and “guides” the actors.

The history between the USA and Russia is also examined, as well as Jack Ryan himself. Ryan is more intellectual than other super-spies of film. He doesn’t have the gizmos and gadgets of James Bond. He uses his brain more than his brawn. Besides the featurettes, there are deleted and extended scenes.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and intense action, and brief strong language.

The Wind and the Lion on Blu-Ray

windandlionSean Connery, Candice Bergen, Brian Keith, and John Huston star in this 1975 movie filled with drama and action. The Wind and the Lion is loosely based on an actual incident. The characters were changed for this film, and Hollywood took a great deal of liberties with the story. However there was an American citizen and his stepson who were taken and held captive.

The film altered the storyline. The year is 1904. An American widow is living in Morocco with her two young children. They are kidnapped by a Berber tribe in a brutal attack that leaves their friends and household staff dead. This incident forces President Theodore Roosevelt to act to protect American citizens wherever they live.

Candice Bergen plays Eden Pedecaris, the mother of the two children. Sean Connery is Mulai Ahmed er Raisuli, the head of the Berber tribe and the man keeping Eden and her family captive. Raisuli demands a high ransom for the family. His intention is to create an international incident and bring attention to the corruption in the region. Brian Keith is Teddy Roosevelt, and plays the president with gusto and delight.

The music by Jerry Goldsmith is the best part of the movie. Goldsmith was nominated for an Academy Award for “Best Original Dramatic Score.” The music in The Wind and the Lion rivals those in Lawrence of Arabia and Gone with the Wind. Goldsmith was also nominated for a BAFTA and Grammy for this score.

The bonus feature on the Blu-ray takes viewers behind the scenes as they filmed a great battle scene. “The stuntmen work hand in hand with the special effects men.” This is the only way to keep everyone safe while at the same time creating an intense scene that audiences enjoy watching.

The beautiful soundtrack aside, viewers might not be comfortable with the story considering what is currently happening in Africa – and Nigeria specifically. Kidnapping and violence is a way of life in this region and this movie brings up the fact that not a lot has changed in the region over the past century.

The Wind and the Lion Blu-ray is part of the Warner Archive Collection and is available from their website at www.wbshop.com. The movie is rated PG.

The Hundred-Foot Journey

The hundred foot journeyIn “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Filled with charm, it is both picturesque and elegant – the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, the Maison Mumbai. That is, until the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren), gets wind of it. Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own escalate to all out war between the two establishments – until Hassan’s passion for French haute cuisine and for Mme. Mallory’s enchanting sous chef, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), combine with his mysteriously delicious talent to weave magic between their two cultures and imbue Saint-Antonin with the flavors of life that even Mme. Mallory cannot ignore. At first Mme. Mallory’s culinary rival, she eventually recognizes Hassan’s gift as a chef and takes him under her wing.

“The Hundred-Foot Journey” abounds with flavors that burst across the tongue. A stimulating triumph over exile, blossoming with passion and heart, with marjoram and madras, it is a portrayal of two worlds colliding and one boy’s drive to find the comfort of home, in every pot, wherever he may be.

“The Hundred-Foot Journey will be released in theaters on August 8, 2014.

Love Finds You in Sugarcreek on UP TV

Love Find You In Sugarcreek_Final Key ArtSugarcreek, Ohio is nicknamed “The little Switzerland of Ohio.” It sits in the heart of Amish country. Sugarcreek is a quiet, quaint town where not much happens to upset the apple cart, so to speak. That is until two strangers come to town. Love Finds You in Sugarcreek is a sweet story filled with emotion and heart.

DSC_1643Rachel (Sarah Lancaster) is a policewoman in Sugarcreek. When her father was killed, Rachel was taken in and raised by her Amish aunts, Bertha (Kelly McGillis), Anna (Marianna Alacchi), and Lydia (Annie Kitral). She has a strong attachment to the Amish community and a very protective attitude toward her aunts. So, when a mysterious man and his son arrive in town with no money and nowhere to stay while their car is being fixed, Rachel is a bit concerned when her aunts take them into their home. Joe (Tom Everett Scott) and his young son Bobby (Thomas Kapanowski) seem like nice people, but the cop in her arises her suspicions about these strangers.

Just why are Joe and Bobby in town? Sure, their car broke down and they have to wait a few days for the repairs, but what are they doing traveling around and where are they from? Joe’s answers are vague. He is running away from something and Rachel wonders if that something is illegal.DSC_1679 When she finally discovers his intentions are good and he is only trying to keep his son safe, she begins to trust him and the two are definitely drawn to each other. Even so, Rachel sets out to discover exactly who Joe really is, and when she does, she becomes swept up in the intrigue that brought him to Ohio in the first place.

When violence from his past follows Joe to the quiet Amish community, it soon engulfs the quiet world. By this time Joe has not only endeared himself to the Amish community, but he has become part of them, and also loves the people of Sugarcreek. Bobby is having a wonderful time and Joe sees his son happy for the first time in a long while.

At the recent Television Critics Association Press Tour, Sarah Lancaster discussed her involvement with the film. “I think it’s a really beautiful script,” she explained. “I think it has a vast appeal. It’s a beautiful love story. There’s also mystery involved.” Lancaster added, “This was a really rare experience and a unique one that I will not soon forget. It was remarkable being a part of that town.” And, as viewers will see, it is a charming and inviting town.

Love Finds You in Sugarcreek is a sweet, uplifting movie. It is filled with entertainment and hope. It premiers Sunday, June 1, 2014 on UP TV.

BabyFirst U-verse App

Babies now have an app that interacts with the television on U-Verse via an iPhone or iPad. Before you stop reading this review because you don’t have U-Verse in your house, wait. The app is just as fun without a connection to the TV.

Did you know 97% of American babies under age 3 views TV regularly? The caliber of shows dedicated to young viewers has greatly improved since my time.

The BabyFirst channel is a fun place for babies to learn and begin understanding the little things in life. Music, colors, animals, drawings and other fun objects entertain young minds… very young minds. However (on a personal note) I admit to turning on the channel late at night to unwind and relax with the soothing music and interesting visuals before going to sleep!

Uverse_Baby_V1.Still013

There are several apps from BabyFirst, however this new one is designed specifically to interact with AT&T’s U-verse system. With a touch of a button, babies (and parents) can see their activities on the TV screen, while working with them on their iPhone or iPad. How cool is that?
BabyFirst is a baby-focused media company dedicated solely to delivering content for babies and their parents/caregivers. The app lets babies play with colors, shapes, and animals and by doing so it develops hand-eye coordination.

Watch the video to see what this app can do.

Again, if you don’t have the U-verse system in your house, this free app is still a good one. You won’t be able to put your activities on the TV, but there are some great things for babies to do, including working with colors and shapes.

If you have DISH, BabyFirst is available on channel 823.

The AT&T BabyFirst’s U-verse App is available for free from the App Store on iPhone and iPad or at www.AppStore.com.

For more information go to their website at www.babyfirsttv.com.

Million Dollar Arm – Movie Review

MILLION DOLLAR ARM

Million Dollar Arm is a movie that will not only leave audiences with a feeling of amazement, it will also have them intrigued by the people on which this story was taken. Yes, it is based on a true story, and is definitely one of the year’s feel good movies for all ages.

Jon Hamm stars as JB Bernstein, a sports agent who is down on his luck. His agency is in financial trouble and if he doesn’t sign a big contract soon, he may have to shut it down. JB comes up with an interesting solution. Instead of looking for an athlete who is already raising the roofs of ball fields, stadiums, or sports centers, he decides to take some unknown boys and turn them into baseball players. But his plan is more intricate than simply plucking out some wanna-be ball players, he thinks outside of the box. As a matter of fact, he thinks outside of the country and even the continent. JB goes to India to look for cricket players to turn them into baseball players.

In India he holds the “Million Dollar Arm” contest to find two men who can throw the fastest baseball. He brings along Ray Poitevint, a retired baseball scout. Alan Arkin plays Poitevint with humor and adds additional fun to the storyline.

MILLION DOLLAR ARM

Another fun character is Amit (Pitobash), an eager young Indian who works “for free” and helps JB with the contest then as a translator for the boys when they go to the United States. This guy is adorable and is always good for a laugh, even though he is very serious.
Finally, Rinku and Dinesch (Suraj Sharma and Madhur Mittal) win the contest in India and face their next challenge. They are going to leave their small villages and go to America for a chance at a major league contract after a brief training program with USC coach Tom House, played by Bill Paxton, who must work closely with these nobodies and turn them into somebodies. This entire process must be done in a year for JB’s investor to buy into the plan.

While in California, the boys end up staying with JB who lives a bachelor life. He has no idea what to do with the three Indian boys. He continues to order pizza for their dinners and leaves them under the care of House in the day and mainly by themselves at night, while he is off still trying to sign a big contract with a professional player.

MILLION DOLLAR ARM
The boys bond with JB’s tenant Brenda (Lake Bell), who sees their loneliness and frustration and tries to get JB to spend more time with them. After all, the 18-year-olds have never been away from their families and their villages. They have never seen an escalator. Los Angeles is a strange and wondrous place.

Jon Hamm explained, “I am a big sports fan and I was intrigued by this story which had gone under my radar. I read the script, looked up the real story online, and the more I found out, the more fascinated I was. So on a fundamental level, I was intrigued. It’s more a story about people and how they relate to each other. As the story unfolds, we realize that JB is learning as much about himself as the boys are about their new life. So it all just coalesced. The more I learned about it, the more attractive it became.

Producer Mark Ciardi explained about why House was selected by JB. “He’s kind of like a throwing guru. So JB was thinking, who is going to take these two kids and teach them how to pitch? So he went to Tom House who he knew a little bit and figured if it is going to be anyone, it’s going to be this guy. In our script, we say half the people think he is crazy and half the people think he is genius. A guy like that would be willing to take these kids on.”

mda4Paxton also said that House was happy to have him play the part and gave him creative license in doing so. “He couldn’t have been nicer about it. He said, ‘If you play me as you, you’ll be the best me,’” Paxton recalled.

Director Craig Gillespie said casting the role of Brenda was tricky. “She is really the cement of the movie. She’s really well-written but she had to have a light touch to her because at certain points, she’s rough on JB. That was probably the hardest casting and she was exactly what we needed.”

Million Dollar Arm is the Miracle of baseball. The 2004 movie Miracle was the story of the underdog 1980 US hockey team that made history. Million Dollar Arm is the story of underdog Indian boys who also made history. You could say it is a fun “Ball-ywood” movie. Even if you are not interested in baseball, this is a feel good movie with a wonderful story.

The film is rated PG for mild language and some suggestive content. It opens May 16, 2014.

Jack is Back – Kiefer Sutherland Talks about 24

sutherland2

From 2001 -2010, Kiefer Sutherland mesmerized television viewers as Jack Bauer in the series 24. After several years, Jack is back in the Fox 12-part series 24: Live Another Day. Unlike the original series, which took 24 episodes to unravel a day in the life of Bauer, this new series still travels through 24 hours however viewers will get all 1440 minutes of the day in 12 episodes.

Kiefer Sutherland spoke with members of the Television Critics Association in January and again with members of the press recently to discuss this new adventure, which unlike the previous seasons, takes place in London. Before this 12-part series was written, there was plenty of talk about making a movie instead of another TV season. “The film is an ongoing kind of situation. There’s always an opportunity to do that,” Sutherland said. However, at the present time he is satisfied with this 12-part series.

“I think people were anticipating a movie,” the actor acknowledged. “Even in the context of the promotion of another television show I did called Touch where I would be in Russia, you know, I had gone to a lot of different places, been to South Africa, I was always amazed how successful the show was and that it somehow managed to transcend culture, language, politics, religion, etc. I’ve never had another project that I’ve been a part of that has had that kind of international success, where arguably through Europe, Asia, and even parts of Africa, that was equally successful as it was in America, which I think is a really rare thing for an American television show,” Sutherland stated with pride.

“And then with regards to people coming up [to me], it was either one of two things. They would either say, ‘oh, man, I really miss 24.’ And if they were going to say ‘when is it coming back’ it was usually directed towards that of a film, meaning that the last thing I thought we were going to do is another season. And I think fans were kind of surprised by that as well, and I hope in a good way.” Having the season shortened by half the number of episodes might prove to be something that fans will enjoy.

sutherland

What is it about his character that affects the viewers? “I think the fact that he doesn’t always win. In the context of the first season, he managed to save the president, he managed to get his daughter back, but he lost his wife.” Sutherland characterizes it like “a guy goes and gets a promotion at work and he’s very happy for a few minutes, but then realizes he doesn’t have time to take his son to football practice anymore. And I think there’s a kind of reality in that not winning that makes Jack Bauer incredibly relatable.”

Among TV viewers, Jack is an iconic character. Kiefer explained, “I think there’s a very strong moral compass with Jack Bauer. Whether he is right or wrong he is going to do what he thinks is the right thing, and he’s going to do everything to the risk of his own life, that he’s going to do that to try and prevent whatever situation the day brings from happening.”

When asked how he would like 24 to be remembered in years to come, Sutherland was philosophical. He said, “When I take a look at a movie like To Kill a Mockingbird, … its performances are outstanding, the story is really important and special, and it has not dated itself at all to me. I would like 24 to kind of be the same thing. And please know that I’m not comparing 24 to To Kill a Mockingbird. I’m just saying in the sense of it not dating itself I would like that very much.” For Sutherland, having people enjoy the series in the future, as much as they do today, is what he is hoping for.

“I’ve always said this from the very beginning of the show, that I felt that the star of 24 was this concept, was this idea, and I still believe that very strongly.” Mr. Sutherland is also an executive producer of the show. And he added, “We became so focused on trying to make these the best 12 episodes of 24.”

24: Live Another Day airs Mondays on FOX.

The Best Offer on DVD

bestofferGeoffrey Rush stars in this emotional, romantic, and intriguing movie. The Best Offer is quirky yet offers viewers characters that create a mesmerizing tale.

Virgil Oldman (Rush) is a famous art appraiser and auctioneer. His knowledge of art is almost incomparable and he is sought out by people around the world to appraise their items. So, when he is asked to evaluate the contents of a villa, he hesitates because the owner only contacts him on the phone. They don’t meet face to face. His curiosity gets the better of him and he agrees to take the job. Then he discovers Claire (Sylvia Hoeks) suffers from an illness and hasn’t been out of her house in years. She avoids personal contact with others, and only allows the caretaker inside the house. That is until she hires Oldman.

Oldman is not void of quirkiness either. He refuses to touch anything and wears gloves to avoid personal contact with others. And, he does not have the highest moral character people believe him to possess. He is in cahoots with Billy (Donald Sutherland) who connives with him to bid on certain pieces of art that Oldman has under appraised in order to acquire them at a low price.

Now, add one more character into the storyline. Robert (Jim Sturgess) is a man who is good with machines and can fix anything mechanical, and ends up advising Oldman about his fixation with Claire.

Oldman is captivated by Claire. Their budding love story is one that threads its way through everything he does. She gets under his skin, so to speak and he is completely mesmerized by her.

Every character is an enigma in this movie, and no one is who he appears to be to the outside world. This is a story that is intriguing and captivating. There are twists and turns throughout the entire film. It is something that will definitely capture the imaginations of viewers. There is something enchanting yet bewildering about the film. In the end, it is a movie that is definitely thought provoking.

The Best Offer is rated R for some sexuality and graphic nudity. It is not for young viewers, however I found it to be an intriguing and very interesting and I do not hesitate to recommend it to viewers who enjoy smart, sophisticated, romantic and touching films.
