Home – Movie Review

HOME

DreamWorks Animation’s newest film is clever, witty, and fun. Home is a story of love, friendship, and understanding.

The Boov are a species of aliens that are on the move whenever they are located by their arch nemesis The Gorg. This time the Boov select a little planet named Earth to invade and use as their new home. Once on the planet they take all the humans to a remote location. But one little girl manages to unwittingly evade their capture, thanks to her cat sitting on the top of her head.

Gratuity Tucci, nicknamed “Tip,” is left alone surrounded by the Boov. She and her cat named Pig, yes, pig, are intent on finding her mother. So when Tip comes in contact with Oh, a clumsy Boov with a big heart, they join forces to locate her mother, in the car Oh modified for their journey. Oh has unintentionally sent out a “warming of the house” party invitation to the entire galaxy and beyond, which will lead the Gorg right to Earth. While Tip is heading toward her mother, Oh is trying to evade the other Boov who are angry with their bumbling friend for putting them in danger again.

Rihanna supplies the voice of 12-year-old Tip and Jim Parsons is the voice of Oh. After seeing the movie, there is no one else who could have done justice to this bumbling misfit than Parsons. His inflections are right on, and his personality shines through.

Director Tim Johnson said “It’s very much a buddy movie, and it’s also about a clash of cultures coming to an incredible understanding and blossoming into a fun and beautiful friendship between Oh and Tip.” Jim Parsons added, “You never know where, and with whom, you’re going to find friendship.” This is not only a story of the two cultures, but also a story of these two very different entities forging a lasting commitment and strong bond.

What is fun about the Boov is their way with words. If this film strikes a chord with audiences, kids will start talking like the Boov. Do you remember when Star Wars came out and people began talking like Yoda? Well, the Boov have an even more entertaining way of talking and mixing up words. Yet the meanings of what they say is clear. They just express things a little differently than we do. For instance, Oh does not fit in. He “fits out.”

Others lending their voices to the characters are Steve Martin who is Captain Smek, the leader of the Boov, Matt Jones is Kyle, Oh’s sometimes friend, and Jennifer Lopez is Lucy, Tip’s mom. The fun interaction between spunky Tip and fun-loving Oh is delightful to watch, as are the interactions and actions of the color-changing Boov.

Rihanna also lends her musical talent for the soundtrack. She said she wanted “to ensure that, lyrically and musically, the songs were exactly what were needed for a given scene.”

“It’s the most interesting ‘playtime’ I’ve ever had as an actor,” Parson admitted. And audiences will most likely find this film a fun time as well.

Home opens in theaters Friday, March 27, 2015. Note: The screening I saw was in 3D however this movie doesn’t have to be seen in 3D. It is just as enjoyable in 2D.

Home is rated PG for mild action and some rude humor.

Island of Lemurs: Madagascar Combo Pack

lemursMorgan Freeman narrates this amazing story of the history and future of lemurs in the only place on earth where they reside – Madagascar. Island of Lemurs is a spectacularly photographed film from the folks at IMAX, showcasing the life and difficulties of the lemurs, who are really amazing animals.

Lemurs are the “most ancient primates alive today.” They outlived the dinosaurs. The name “lemur” means “wandering spirit” and these adorable little fellows will have you saying “Aww” throughout the film.

As with many animals, their survival is in danger. Human encroachment on the island and forest fires have endangered many species and it’s up to people to turn around this situation. For over 60 million years lemurs have roamed the lush land of Madagascar but their numbers are dwindling, thanks to humans. It is up to us to save them “one generation at a time.”

This spectacular film is not only educational but it is also memorable. Several of the over 100 species of lemurs are highlighted in the movie. And the lemurs are surviving today because of the efforts of Patricia Wright, a primatologist who is part of the film.

Whether they are singing, dancing, jumping, climbing, or walking, viewers will find themselves thinking – or in my case saying out loud – “they’re so cute.”

Bonus features on the Blu-ray include a “making of” featurette highlighting the different habitats and species of lemurs as well as other unique critters on the island. Plus, viewers will see how the filmmakers were able to capture the lemurs in their habitats, in many instances via a hot air balloon!

Another bonus is the story of the lemurs, and in yet another featurette viewers learn about Patricia Wright and her mission to save the lemurs. Viewers also get to see a 13-day-old Indri lemur. Try watching that and not gushing over the sweet, innocent little face. Five facts about Indri lemurs are discussed, as well as interesting facts about the Indri lemurs, the ring-tailed lemurs, the mouse lemurs, the bamboo lemurs, and the Verreaux’s sifaka lemurs.

Island of Lemurs: Madagascar is a fun and interesting film about nature’s greatest explorer and true survivalists. Lemurs are not only adorable but they also have a long history on the planet. Hopefully this film will help gain awareness for their survival so future generations will know and be able to see a lemur. Again, I challenge anyone not to be touched by these sweet little fellows.

The combo pack includes a DVD, a Blu-ray, 3-D Blu-ray, and Digital HD. Island of Lemurs: Madagascar is rated G for all audiences. It is definitely a cute and educational film for the entire family.

Song of the Sea Combo Pack

songoftheseaSong of the Sea is a magical adventure based on Irish/Scottish legends. The movie follows a little girl named Saoirse who is the last of the selkies. Selkies are seals that magically transform from seals into people. In the sea they are seals and on land they are human.

The story begins with Ben who is anxiously awaiting the birth of his little sister, however his mother, who he later discovers is a selkie, must suddenly leave her family and return to the sea. In exchange she leaves a new baby girl. Saoirse is a sweet child but Ben is not the good older brother he promised his mother he would be. In many ways he resents the little girl. After all, she came when his mother left.

When their grandmother comes to visit, the old woman insists the children come to live with her in the city, telling their father that a lighthouse on a little island is no place for children. As soon as they can, the children escape from their grandmother’s house and Ben thinks they are going back to their father and their home in the lighthouse. But Saoirse has other ideas. She is a girl on a mission, so to speak. Along the way she is hunted by those who wish to harm her and prevent her from doing what she was born to do. This little girl is the only salvation for a world of spirits and fairies.

There are plenty of endearing scenes in this movie. Combining Celtic folklore with interesting animation and hauntingly beautiful music, Song of the Sea is definitely enchanting. It’s not one of the high-tech animated films we see a lot of these days. It is a heartfelt story with charm.

Saoirse, Ben, their dog Cu, and this story of feelings, home, and family will touch your heart. Humans, animals, and all of nature combine into one beautiful tale of love, with some delightful animated sequences and plenty of emotion.

The combo pack includes a Blu-ray, a DVD, and Digital HD. Bonus features include a peek behind the scenes, animation tests, and “The Art of Song of the Sea” which has several images from the animated film.

The movie was nominated for an Academy Award and several other awards, and won the Satellite Award for Best Motion Picture, Animated or Mixed Media.

Song of the Sea is rated PG for some mild peril, language, and pipe smoking images.

Discover Spring with Curious George

Curious George Main Image copy

The flowers are blooming, the sky is blue, the butterflies are flying, and the sun is shining. It’s spring! But what is spring? In Curious George Swings Into Spring, the adorable little monkey learns all about the season and tries to give his good pal Hundley a little Spring Fever.

We all know the good intentioned little guy sometimes causes mishaps. Well, this time is no different. George unintentionally causes some problems in the apartment building, forcing everyone out for a few days while the pipes are all replaced. But little Hundley has no place to go. So he ends up going to the country with George and the Man. Little Hundley is homesick and cannot seem to understand the fun in country life.

George tries everything to show Hundley what spring is all about. He introduces him to the bunnies, the chickens, and everything in the country. But Hundley is having nothing to do with them. Then Hundley goes to a farm filled with other dachshunds. That’s where he finally feels at home. However that’s not the end of the story. When the little dog gets lost it’s up to George to take to the skies to find his friend.

Curious George Swings Into Spring is a fun show with some happy, appealing songs that will give everyone Spring Fever. It was produced in 2013 but never loses its charm. The movie will air on PBS Kids March 30 and April 3, 2015.

Two brand new Curious George episodes will air that week giving young viewers a fun intro to the season and a lot of viewing enjoyment. “George’s Curious Dragon Dance” and “Bowling for Bobolinks” will premier March 31. In the first, George learns about the Chinese New Year and in the second he learns how to separate the bowling shoes for the customers by size, color, and age. And “Curious George’s Amazon Adventure” and “Monkey Senses” will premier April 1. George loves to return to the Amazon and make new friends, even if they are fun-loving monkeys who take off with the camera – with George hot on their trail. George is always full of fun and surprises and these two new episodes (4 new shows in all) have plenty of monkey fun for all Curious George fans.

Curious George follows the STEM curriculum (science, technology, engineering, and math) so even though kids think they are just enjoying a cute little show, they are actually learning at the same time. Shh. Don’t tell them. Just let them have fun with George and the gang.

Happy Spring from Curious George.

Noah’s Ark on UP TV

noahThis retelling of the Bible story of Noah and the Ark has a different spin. It’s more of a story of family than any other version. It’s the story of love, faith, and the meaning of family. Noah’s Ark stars David Threlfall as Noah and Joanne Whalley as his wife Emmie.

When you think about watching another movie about Noah and his Ark, you probably think “why?” After all, it’s been done over and over again. It’s a “popular” Biblical story and one everyone knows. Well, most people anyway. But this version is different. The focus is more on Noah’s family and his faith than the actual building of the ark and the flood that cleansed the world.

Threlfall is a kind, loveable Noah. He’s filled with love, humor, and faith in God. The combination of Threlfall and Whalley is sweet. They portray a loving couple who put family above everything. So when a messenger of God tells Noah that he needs to build an ark because a flood is coming that will cleanse the world of all the corruption and hatred, Noah knows in his heart that is what he must do, even if everyone in the town feels he is crazy.

noah2Faith in her husband is the only thing Emmie needs to work alongside Noah. However their four sons and their wives are not convinced. They continue to work the farm while their parents toil in the hot desert building a humongous ark. It is only when they realize that love for and faith in their father is more important than anything that they join their parents building the ark.

David Threlfall said, “The story jumped off the page at me from the first reading. It’s not just a family saga but the first family saga. It takes its inspiration from many faiths and speaks of values which should be shared across all cultures. It was something I immediately wanted to be part of.”

The portrayals of the Biblical characters are what make this movie enjoyable to watch, since, let’s face it, we’ve seen this story countless times before. The love and kindness of Noah touches your heart and the love his wife has for him, even in the face of humiliation, is the love of a lifetime. This is definitely a loving, endearing couple and this Noah is the most down-to-earth, loving Noah I’ve seen.

Filmed in Morocco, the backdrop of the harsh desert puts viewers right into the story. This is a story that lends itself to today’s world as much as it did to the time of Noah. God wanted to cleanse the world of those who were evil. Has humanity learned a lesson from Noah’s Ark? Apparently not. But from now on when you see a rainbow, perhaps you will look at the world differently after seeing this movie.

Noah’s Ark is a wonderful film for the entire family. It premiers Sunday, March 22, 2015 on UP TV.

The Dovekeepers Premiers on CBS

The DovekeepersThe Dovekeepers is based on a novel by Alice Hoffman. It’s the first program from CBS’ limited series and events unit and will air in two parts on March 31 and April 1, 2015.

Rachel Brosnahan and Cote de Pablo star in this fictionalized account of the siege of Masada. “A few years ago, I had the good fortune to read this amazing book by Alice Hoffman,” Roma Downey told the media. She is the executive producer of The Dovekeepers. “I absolutely fell in love with the story. I had been to Masada a few years ago and had been so profoundly touched by the story of a persecuted people who, in the face of that persecution, had stood up for what they believed in, where courage was greater than fear, and faith and love was greater than hate, and the power of sacrifice greater than war.”

Masada was a hilltop fortress originally built by King Herod. Located near the Dead Sea, it was the destination for over 900 people who sought safety and peace after the Romans started destroying Jerusalem and killing all the Jews. These people formed a self-sustaining community, feeling they would be safe from the Romans who were scouting the land for the remaining Jews. In the end, the people decided they would rather die free than be killed or captured by the Romans. Only a few people survived to tell the story.

When talking about the actual story of Masada and this movie, Downey was very passionate. “The story of Masada” she said, “has been told to us historically through the writings of Josephus (played by Sam Neill). And Alice Hoffman said when she went to Masada and she learned through these writings that only two people and five children survived, she took that as the seed of a narrative, and she built this beautiful story around it. And so we have the license to create this beautiful fictional story and the grounding of the historic story. But what attracted me to the story was that it had these amazing courageous and powerful women. For many years, as an actress myself, I was always looking for the story or the scripts that could really put women out to the front and center. And this story certainly does that. It’s profoundly moving, and it’s incredibly inspiring.”

The first night of the two-night event, introduces Shirah (de Pablo) and Yael (Brosnahan) and their stories unfold as they retell what happened to Josephus, an historian for the Romans who was intent on learning everything about the two women, their histories, and the siege of Masada. The siege plays out on the second night. Although most of the filming took place in Malta, the filmmakers did film some aspects of the actual mountaintop fortress.

“We might have liked to have filmed at Masada,” explained Roma Downey, “but that didn’t work out. But we were able to shoot for a few days at Masada. We have beautiful drone shots and flyovers that we were able to accomplish there. And some of the desert work we were able to achieve in Jordan. But the bulk of the principal photography took place in Malta.”

Her passion for the land and the story was almost infectious as the actress/producer talked about her experiences. “I had the good fortune a number of times to travel to Israel and the Holy Land. And Masada is breathtaking. Literally it has a vista 360 that is just so incredibly beautiful. The power of the story is just so profoundly moving, I think.”

When asked about casting Cote de Pablo, Downey explained, “She’s so incredibly beautiful. We needed a mystery and depth for this character, and Cote provides both. The character of Shirah is, on the page, a complex character, a character who’s so passionate.” While the story is set against the framework of the brutality of the time, Downey said, “At its heart, The Dovekeepers is a love story. It’s a love story set against this historical backdrop, so it’s a love story in the face of tragedy. But the love‑story element of it is so beautiful, and Cote breathes such a heartbeat into the essence of this. We were thrilled to get her.” Downey added that it was well thought out to air the first night of the film right after Cote’s former series NCIS, knowing full well that de Pablo has a loyal fan base that would stay tuned for her new role in this movie event.

Cote de Pablo told the media, “I think in the end, Dovekeepers really is a story about love and hope, and I think we can all relate to that.” And Rachel Brosnahan added, “And I think that’s what makes it so relatable to what’s going on today, is these are individual stories of people trying to find themselves and find strength and hope and courage in the face of great oppression, and how they individually deal with this is the most beautiful part.”

It’s not necessary to have read the book to enjoy the film, nor is it important to be familiar with the history of Masada. While the gist of the historical story is included in the film, the characters’ stories are basically fictional. The Dovekeepers airs March 31 and April 1 on CBS.
