Visit the USS Iowa Battleship in LA Harbor

IMG_3324
The USS Iowa is permanently docked in the Los Angeles Harbor in San Pedro. Visitors to the battleship can explore several decks and rooms in the ship as well as the museum. Along the self-guided tour are signs explaining what you are seeing as well as monitors showing footage of the ship and various interviews about the ship and its history.

IMG_3325
The Iowa has three sister ships: the New Jersey, the Missouri, and the Wisconsin. Two others, the Illinois and the Kentucky were originally commissioned with the four but they were never completed. The Iowa served in World War II with about 2800 people on board. It also served in the Korean War and beyond. In 2012 it moved to its permanent home in the LA Harbor.

IMG_3393
There are plenty of things for kids to do on the ship. When Navy Captain John L. McCrea brought his new dog onto the ship he quickly became the mascot. The dog was named Victory but everyone called him Vicky. When they first come to the ship, kids are given a card and while touring the ship they look for several signs with a picture of Vicky. They then mark down the location of the signs and at the end of the tour, when all the signs have been located, they get a little souvenir.

IMG_3399
As you walk through the hallways you get a sense of the lifestyle of the crew. The rows of bunks are a startling reminder that this is a ship used in battle. The luxuries are minimum. The officers’ rooms are definitely more spacious. If you had any kind of claustrophobia, living on this ship would not be for you.

IMG_3344
There is definitely patriotism surrounding this ship. Whenever a veteran or military man or woman comes on board, he or she is announced over the loud speaker. It is an homage to their service. And, the men stationed around the ship have plenty of stories to tell about their own time in the service, whether they served on the Iowa or another ship. It’s interesting to learn about their personal stories, especially those who served in World War II.

IMG_3395
There are plenty of steps, most of them steep, to climb as well as narrow hallways to maneuver so this is not a tour for anyone in a wheelchair or with a walker. If you have trouble walking or climbing steps, don’t even think about touring the battleship. Otherwise, it’s an interesting and educational tour for those who are up to the challenge of moving around this impressive ship. Signs are everywhere to inform visitors about where they are in the ship and what they are looking at.

IMG_3353
With the mobile app, visitors are able to get a more immersive tour of the ship, however if you don’t want to download the app (from the App Store and Google Play), the self-guided tour is still enough to give visitors plenty of onboard experiences and information.

‘The Sense of an Ending’ on DVD

senseofending
Jim Broadbent stars as Tony Webster in The Sense of an Ending. This is the story of memories, love, loss, and coming to terms with your life.

Webster is a divorced man whose daughter is about to give birth, starting a new chapter in all of their lives. He’s a quiet man who is forced to confront his past when out of the blue he receives a letter informing him that the mother of his first girlfriend has passed away and left him something in her will.

This is a surprise to Webster. He hasn’t seen his old friends in ages. When he goes to the attorney’s office to pick up the item which he discovers is a diary, he learns his former girlfriend Veronica is not going to release it. This upsets him because feels he is entitled to the diary, even though he hasn’t seen these people in many decades. Why would this woman leave him anything, and why won’t Veronica give it up?

While this is going on, Webster relates the story to his ex-wife. Through flashbacks viewers get glimpses of his life when he was in school. His four best buddies were close, for a while. One of them ended up committing suicide. All of this plays into the story as Tony relives his memories.

He tracks down Veronica (Charlotte Rampling) and when she refuses to hand over the diary – she said she burned it – she leaves something with him. It’s a letter he wrote years ago after he and Veronica split up and she became involved with his other friend.

This is a mystery that unravels slowly as the film progresses and it is not until the end when viewers understand what actually happened between them all those years ago. The movie is slow moving and at times a bit confusing, but the ending wraps up most of the confusion.

There are two behind the scenes bonus features on the DVD. The movie was based on a book and the filmmakers did their best to do justice to the popular novel. The actors and filmmakers discuss their characters and working on the movie.

Emily Mortimer, Michelle Dockery, and Harriet Walter costar in this story, however it is lead by Broadbent. Director Ritesh Batra garnered the “Directors to Watch” award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival earlier this year.

The Sense of an Ending is rated PG-13 for thematic elements, a violent image, sexuality and brief strong language.

‘Legion of Brothers’ – Movie Review

MV5BYjVmZTFkY2YtYTJkYS00NjcwLWIyMmEtMWM5YTRhMWMzODhjXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNTU1OTY2NjI@._V1_SY1000_SX675_AL_
We’ve heard of the heroic efforts of the Navy Seals in the Middle East, but the actions of the Green Berets/Army Special Forces are not as familiar to the general public. Legion of Brothers will change that. It recounts the days that immediately followed the 9/11 attacks with interviews with the men who first went to Afghanistan. The footage included in this documentary as well as the personal accounts are nothing less than heroic.

Less than a hundred Special Forced troops were deployed to Afghanistan immediately after the attacks. It was an extraordinary mission that had the desired result. In just a couple months the Taliban was driven out of the country and a coalition with the Northern Alliance was formed to fight against not only the Taliban but also al-Qaeda.

These men have not received the recognition they deserve for their actions. Until now. This film will impact everyone who sees it.

The Special Forces troops sacrifice everything for their country and their wives recount some of their own experiences while their husbands were deployed. When they returned many of them, if not all, were changed by their experience. It isn’t something they discuss openly, but they did speak about it to the filmmakers.

Director Greg Barker says, “I’m excited to share this cautionary tale about the nature of modern war, which I’ve wanted to tell ever since 2002, when I first met … many of the Green Berets who led secret missions into Afghanistan immediately after 9/11. These Special Operations teams were the very first foot-soldiers of the War on Terror – now the longest war in American history – and even back in 2002 their stories hit me as iconic illustration of what makes war such an endemic part of the human condition.”

The film itself is intense and impactful, however the recounting of the incident that killed two of their own is heartbreaking. The first two casualties of the war were from friendly fire. It was a major mistake that the men still have to live with.

In 2016 The American Response Monument was unveiled near ground zero in NYC. It shows a “Horse Soldier” from the Green Berets. When they arrived in Afghanistan, one team rode horses through the country. Images of them riding in the film are amazing. To think that in this day and age, they had to rely on horse power, literally.

“… As Special Operations continue to be at the forefront of our nations wars,” said Barker, “it is vital that we are able to tell the kind of raw, unsanitized stories of modern war as revealed in Legion of Brothers.”

Legion of Brothers opens May 19, 2017 in select theaters.

‘A Street Cat Named Bob’ on Blu-ray and DVD

streetcat
A Street Cat Named Bob is the true story of James Bowen and his cat Bob. While Luke Treadway plays Bowen in the movie, Bob is played by himself, which makes for an even more entertaining and heartening story.

The story revolves around Bowen (Luke Treadway), a homeless junkie living on the streets in London. To make money he plays his guitar and sings. He is on a methadone program and supervised by a sympathetic woman named Val (Joanne Froggatt) who eventually finds him housing in a project and knows he truly wants to get his act together and get clean.

One day a cat wonders into his apartment. The two become inseparable and James even spends the last of his money for medicine for his cat Bob.

Bob is endearing and devoted. He is also a little different from any other cat. He likes being on a leash and he rides on James’ shoulders and comfortably in a basket on his bike.

Everyone loves to watch Bob riding through the streets on James’ shoulders and see him when James is singing. Soon the two are stars on the Internet. With Bob by his side, James’ income rises. He is able to buy real food for himself and Bob. And his neighbor Betty (Ruta Gedmintas) helps both of them with encouragement and friendship.

Once you watch this movie you might want to go to Amazon or a bookstore and pick up some of the books written about Bob by James.

A Street Cat Named Bob is heartening, entertaining, inspiring, and wonderful. The few short bonus features add a little background to the original story with the cast and James Bowen, and of course Bob.

You might not think of this as a noteworthy film when you first pop it into your player, however it quickly grows on you and you’ll become emotionally invested in these two characters. It is a film I have recommended to others because it is so uplifting. In reality, and in this movie, James Bowen saved Bob’s life and Bob saved James’ life. Talk about a great story. And the fact that it is based on their real lives makes it even more remarkable.

If you’re in the mood for an inspiring and moving film, this is it.

The film is not rated however due to the subject matter it is not for children.

‘Savannah Sunrise’ on DVD

SanvanahSunrise01_dvd_3D[3]
Pamela Reed and Shawnee Smith star as mother-in-law and daughter-in-law in this humorous road trip movie. Savannah Sunrise is a story filled with compassion, frustration, and love.

Joy (Smith) is a type-A personality-working woman. Her phone is practically glued to her ear. She loves her family and her work, but oftentimes the work overtakes her family time. Lorraine (Reed) is her mother-in-law who has been a widow for two years. The family is moving her from her home in Kentucky to a retirement community in Georgia. Due to a glitch in her plane reservations, not to mention in her memory, Lorraine must make the trip in the car with Joy. What starts as a simple drive turns into an epic, and very often hilarious, road trip in which both women grow closer.

With her husband and kids left to pack up Lorraine’s house, Joy and her mother-in-law begin their trip to Savannah. Joy intends on conducting business calls and getting work done on the drive, but those plans go out the window within the first few miles of the journey. Lorraine’s bladder is always begging for a restroom and Joy discovers she must stop more than she planned. So much for a quick drive.

As they continue the trip that was supposed to be an uneventful journey, one thing after another happens. Joy grows increasingly weary and frustrated with Lorraine. And when Lorraine takes them on an 80-mile side trip to visit her best friend, Joy realizes they must spend the night on the road instead of driving straight through.

With stained clothes and a woman that keeps reminding her that her children will be grown in the blink of an eye, Joy grows more irritated with each passing mile. But there is something nice about having Lorraine in the car with her. Even though her agitation rises, eventually she realizes what a gem her mother-in-law is. And when they find a baby alligator in their car, the two women finally have a memorable, albeit scary, experience over which they bond even more.

The bonus features are a behind-the-scenes look at the story and interviews with the cast. The movie was filmed on location in Georgia. This is a delightful family film.

Savannah Sunrise is available at Walmart. This story of love, compassion, and family is rated TV-G for all audiences.

‘A Mermaid’s Tale’ on DVD

mermaidstale
A Mermaid’s Tale is an entertaining story of family and enduring love. This movie will enchant the entire family.

Widower Matt (Jerry O’Connell) must move himself and his daughter Ryan (Caitlin Carmichael) from San Diego to his childhood California fishing town when his father Art (Barry Bostwick) has a health crisis. Ryan embraces her new environment with courage, but also loneliness. For a 12-year-old girl moving to a new city, and especially into the house with her curmudgeon grandfather, is a big change.

On her first day, Ryan unexpectedly confronts a young woman in the ocean, but before they can talk, the girl swims away – with her tail in tact. A tail? Could she be imagining it?

The next day Ryan returns to the dock but this time the girl comes out of the water to meet her. Coral (Sydney Scotia) is a mermaid but has legs while out of the water. Ryan and Coral become best friends. While Ryan teaches the eager mermaid the ways of humans – like shopping – Coral is increasingly enchanted by their lives.

Ryan wants to learn about Coral’s world so the young mermaid takes her new bestie to meet her family. Her grandmother Thaleia (Nancy Stafford) is the queen of the mermaids and none to happy to have a human enter their world. This could be a disaster and dangerous for them. If the humans discovered where they live, they would be hunted and put on display. But there is a secret Thaleia has been keeping and once Ryan enters her life, everything changes.

In the meantime, Art keeps insisting mermaids exist. He has been searching for them for years. He knows they are there.

When the entire story of his past is finally revealed, it has unexpected consequences.

A Mermaid’s Tale is a story of family. It is a story of friendship. It is a story of everlasting love. The cast is delightful in their roles.

When we think of movies with mermaids, Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah usually come to mind for their 1984 film Splash. The 2006 film Aquamarine also enchanted audiences, especially young girls. A Mermaid’s Tale is a little different however its primary audience is also teenage girls. It is, however, a fun film for the entire family.

The bonus feature on the DVD is a behind the scenes look at the making of the film as well as the cast and filmmakers discussing the story and the characters.

A Mermaid’s Tale is rated G.

‘Paris Can Wait’ movie review

pariscanwait_poster
Eleanor Coppola wrote, produced, and directed Paris Can Wait. This is a charming, endearing, and entertaining story starring Diane Lane and Arnaud Viard, with Alec Baldwin.

Lane is Anne Lockwood, a devoted mother and wife to movie producer Michael Lockwood (Baldwin). While on location in the south of France, the couple plans on flying to the next location however Anne’s earaches keep her from getting on the plane. Michael’s business associated Jacques (Viard) offers to drive her up to Paris where she will meet up with her husband in a few days.

_MG_4820.tiff
What would normally take one day turns into a journey Anne never expected. Jacques introduces her to the back roads of France as well as a lot of food and wine. This man never stops talking about food and wine. His knowledge of them is amazing. Unfortunately, he has no credit card with him so it is left to Anne to pay for most of their meals, which are several courses long, and sometimes include a couple different wines.

2015_BA_caro0495.tiff
The film is a picturesque journey through the country as well as a fun story with this American woman who just wants to get to Paris but finds herself being waylaid into experiences she had never dreamed. All the while, Anne captures her journey with her camera. But her images are not what most people would take pictures of. She has an artistic eye and captures textures and other things that many people simply miss.

Coppola wrote this story after having experienced this very journey herself when she was grounded with a cold that kept her from flying. She had the same 7-hour journey turn into a 2-day event. When asked whether she felt she was being conned, she replied, “I was having a very enjoyable time. I knew and trusted the Frenchman and wasn’t fearing a con. That’s an aspect of the story developed for the script.”
paris3
As Coppola explained, “Anne is at a time in her life – midway – when her child has left home. She has turned 50 and become more reflective. She’s beginning to realize that she can’t look to her husband to make her life perfectly satisfying, and can’t look to another man to do it either. Her happiness is up to her. The next step in her growth is to begin an inner journey. A step towards this inner adventure is expressed by her photographs – her individual view/connection to the world around her. I wanted the movie to be entertaining and thought-provoking. I hope the audience will enjoy the characters’ trip, and take more notice of the small joys in life… such as a really good tomato.”

paris2
The movie takes audiences from Cannes through the French countryside to Lyon then on to Paris. There are several specific destinations that play an important part in the film’s travelogue, however besides the stories of the characters, food is a main ingredient (no pun intended) in this movie.

Paris Can Wait is truly an enjoyable and perfectly enchanting film. Diane Lane is exquisite as Anne and Arnaud Viard is wonderful as the charming Frenchman who doesn’t live by the clock and only wants to experience life in the moment. There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, as well as sensitive and romantic ones.

2015_BA_caro1087.tiff
If you’re trying to figure out who Eleanor Coppola is and how she fits into the famous family, she is married to Francis Coppola and is the mother of Gian-Carlo, Roman, and Sofia.

Paris Can Wait is rated PG and opens in select theaters May 12, 2017.

It’s impossible not to find at least one food in the movie that entices you. Below is a Crème Brûlée au Chocolate | Chocolate Crème Brûlée recipe from the film by Moria Sinskey. Enjoy.

Chocolate adds a luxurious note to classic vanilla accented crème brûlée. Served with a broiled sugar crust or simply as a pot de crème without it. (Yield: 8 6-ounce ramekins)

INGREDIENTS:
2 cups heavy cream
1/2 cup whole milk
1 vanilla bean, split and scraped
6 large egg yolks
3/4 cup brown sugar
1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt
8 ounces’ dark chocolate (68% cacao), melted and kept warm
8 tablespoons fine sugar

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Ready 8 6-ounce ramekins or similar sized heatproof dishes in a deep roasting pan with 1-inch of space between the cups.

Bring the milk, cream and vanilla bean to a simmer in a medium saucepan. Turn off the heat and cover to keep warm.

In a large bowl, whisk the yolks, brown sugar and salt together lightly. Pour the hot cream in thirds over the eggs while whisking constantly. Fold in the melted chocolate until it is thoroughly combined. Strain into a large pitcher and skim off the air bubbles from the surface of the custard with a ladle.

Pour the custard into the cups or ramekins. Pull the oven rack out halfway, place the pan on the rack and pour very hot water into the pan to fill 3/4 of the way up the sides of the cups. Do not splash water into the custards. Carefully push the oven rack in so as not to swish the water. Cover the cups with a flat sheet of heavy foil.

Bake for 50 to 55 minutes until the custard has set. A dime-sized circle at the center should be loose when the custards are jiggled gently.

Remove the custards from the hot water bath. Place in the refrigerator uncovered and chill overnight. Cover after chilling to prevent condensation from forming on the top of the custards while they are cooling.

Sprinkle each of the custards with 1 tablespoon fine sugar. Broil for 1 minute under a hot broiler to caramelize sugar or alternatively use a butane torch.

‘How to Steal a Million’ on Blu-ray from Twilight Time

stealmillion
Audrey Hepburn is as adorable as ever in the fun romantic comedy How to Steal a Million. Hepburn plays Nicole, a young woman living with her father in Paris. Her father is not your ordinary man. DeSolnay (Charles Boyer) is an art forger. As a matter of fact, her grandfather was also a forger. Her father forges paintings and her grandfather created – or recreated – sculptures.

When her father loans a Cellini Venus sculpture to the Paris museum, everything seems fine until Nicole learns her grandfather sculpted the piece. The museum intends on running the usual tests to prove the art is not a fake. To keep the family secret a secret, Nicole enlists the help of a burglar, Simon Demott (Peter O’Toole), to steal the statue before the tests are run. That sounds like an easy task, but the museum has set up strict security around the presumably precious piece of art. Getting it will be quite a challenge, but together Simon and Nicole devise a grand plan.

Hepburn stands out with her fabulous Givenchy wardrobe. This woman was the epitome of style and grace in her career. She brought all her comedic chops to the role of Nicole, while at the same time looking like she stepped out of a fashion magazine. Even in a cleaning woman’s outfit, Hepburn manages to look stylish.

The plot is entertaining and the actors are enticing in their roles. John Williams (known as Johnny Williams in his early days) created a nice score for the background and William Wyler’s direction made the film a hit among moviegoers when it as released in 1966.

This is definitely a fun film with plenty of adorable scenes. A bonus feature on this Blu-ray is a featurette about Audrey Hepburn. She starred in many memorable films in her career, and How to Steal a Million is one of her stylish and sophisticated movies. The actress was nominated for several awards and was presented posthumously with a humanitarian award by the Academy. Prior to this film, Hepburn starred in the 1964 musical My Fair Lady, the 1963 hit Charade, the 1961 drama The Children’s Hour, and many more highly acclaimed films. She went on to star in less than a dozen films after making How to Steal a Million, retiring from motion pictures in 1989 at the age of 60.

How to Steal a Million is now available on Blu-ray from Twilight Time.
