‘Bambi’ Signature Collection

bambianniv
75 years ago the feature animated film Bambi premiered and became an instant classic. Now it joins Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Beauty and the Beast, and Pinocchio as part of the Signature Collection from Disney Home Entertainment.

The story of Bambi delighted readers when it appeared in books. Then Walt Disney decided to make it into an animated feature film. He knew he had to change some things from the book version to make it more appealing to theater audiences, however he did not change the part in which Bambi’s mother dies. This was upsetting to his daughter Diane, who wanted to know why he kept that in the story. She, and most viewers, would have preferred for this scene to be omitted. It has always been the subject of discussion over the years, and a sense of sadness for everyone who loves little Bambi.

The story follows the “Prince of the Forest” from his birth through his first years when he grows, falls in love, and learns to live in the forest. After his mother dies, Bambi lives with his father and is taught how to survive. He desires to be as great a leader as his dad, and when a fire threatens the forest, he has a chance to prove himself.

Bonus features include two deleted scenes that are absolutely adorable, even though they are still in storyboard form. Too bad they didn’t make it into the final cut. Viewers learn about the background of the film and how it made its mark on the Disney Studio. Walt Disney was adamant that the animated characters look more realistic than those in the Snow White film.

With the invention of the Multiplane camera, the studio ramped up animation. This new device created the illusion of depth in animation. Many of the techniques used in the making of Bambi are still being used today at the studio. Viewers can also learn interesting facts about deer in the “Fawn Facts” bonus feature. Besides bonus features about Bambi, there is a short film featuring Oswald the rabbit.

Bambi has always been a loved story with delightful characters and inspired Bambi II in 2006. “Bambi” was nominated for three Academy Awards and won a Golden Globe. This newest edition is a must have for fans of the film.

The Anniversary Edition Signature Collection includes a Blu-ray, DVD, digital HD, and a watercolor lithograph of Bambi and Thumper. Bambi is rated G.

‘The Rules of Love & Grammar’ by Mary Simses – Book Review

ruleslovegrammar
Author Mary Simses follows up on her successful first novel “The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Café” with another fun novel, “The Rules of Love & Grammar.” This is the story of Grace Hammond, a young woman who is at the crossroads of her life.

Grace lives in New York City, but when she loses her job and boyfriend, and her apartment is flooded, she returns to her hometown in Connecticut to put the pieces of her life together and come to terms with her past. She is still suffering from the loss of her sister years ago. This hidden grief bubbles to the surface once she is back in her childhood home.

Also when she returns to her hometown, Grace reconnects with her best friend as well as her old school nemesis. The old insecurities arise and Grace finds herself trying to upstage this woman at every turn.

Grace is confronted by her high school boyfriend who is now a Hollywood director filming in his hometown. She also sees another old friend who owns a bike shop where Grace takes her sister’s bike for restoration. The bike is a strong connection to her sister and Grace wants it restored to the way it was when she was alive. The problem is the restoration costs a lot of money, and since she is now out of work, she cannot pay for it. So, she takes a job helping out at the shop to swap her work for the restoration. It keeps her busy and she gets her sister’s bike back to its original glory.

With all this going on, you might wonder where the “grammar” part of the story comes in. After all, this is titled “The Rules of Love & Grammar.” Well, Grace is a proofreader, or at least she was when she had a job. Anyway, little grammatical mistakes really bother her. She even takes to correcting flyers in town. She cannot let grammatical errors go. To her it’s the equivalent of nails on a chalkboard.

Now, for the “love” part of the story, it’s up to Grace to figure out if she is in love with her Hollywood boyfriend and wants all that that entails, or perhaps the owner of the bike shop is more her style. She definitely wants a change from her life in the big apple. But which one is right for her, and who captures her heart?

Simses has a way of writing endearing characters that jump out of the pages. Her stories are filled with plenty of humorous situations – Grace sings the Happy Birthday song to her old boyfriend ala Marilyn Monroe – as well as heartfelt stories. “The Rules of Love & Grammar” is a cute novel. Simses’ first book was made into a Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Channel movie. We’ll have to wait and see if this one will follow and be produced for the small screen too.

‘Once Upon a Time in Venice’ Movie Review

onceuponvenice
Bruce Willis stars in Once Upon a Time in Venice, a film that had the promise of being a fun and entertaining movie, but falls short of that. Willis plays P.I. Steve Ford in Venice, California. He finds himself in several strange and awkward situations.

Ford is no Magnum, P.I., but he does manage to come out on top. When his dog Buddy is stolen, that’s the last straw for this man. His main focus now is getting his dog back, but he cannot let his other clients down in the meantime. Luckily for Ford, everything and every one tie together so while on the trail of Buddy, he also helps solve other cases.

Along the way to retrieving his beloved pooch, Ford makes a bargain with the leader of the most devilish gang in the area. Spyder (Jason Momoa) has a soft spot, even though he is a gangster, drug dealer, and thief. He is also a man of his word. He has some scruples.

Ford follows one lead after another, and during this time he catches up with Buddy several times, but then things fall apart. To finally get his best friend back, Ford has to do some unsavory things, like stealing a shipment of cocaine to trade for his dog. But dogs are mans best friend so Ford has no qualms about doing anything to get back Buddy.

With the help of his surfer dude friend (John Goodman), they manage some pretty interesting swaps and Goodman’s character of Dave is the comic relief in the film. He has some pretty cute scenes and is the salvation of the movie. Well, him and Buddy. Let’s face it, films about dogs are endearing – most of the time – unless the dog dies. But don’t worry, Buddy is very much alive and happy at the end of the film, even though there are plenty of gunfights along the way.

Once Upon a Time in Venice could have been a very entertaining film. Unfortunately, it isn’t. If you don’t have high expectations for this film, then you might enjoy it. The movie opens June 16, 2017.

‘SCORE’ brings movie music making to audiences

score
For anyone interested in movie making or music or music in movies, SCORE is an interesting documentary. Director Matt Schrader says, “As a cinephile I’d long appreciated the music of film, and in the age of endless press featurettes for Hollywood productions, I’d hoped for a documentary about how film composers create scores.” This film is his brainchild.

Imagine movies without music. It’s almost impossible. Even silent films had a live musician, usually a pianist or an organist, accompanying the film.

As they say in this documentary, “The score is the heart and soul of a film.” The “composer is a storyteller” in his or her own way. The music is a story unto itself.

In the 2006 movie The Holiday, Jack Black’s character explains to Kate Winslet’s character about how important music is to movies. Think about just those few notes that signify the shark in the film Jaws. What about the five notes that welcome the aliens in the 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Star Wars would be a little different without its signature sound, as would James Bond and The Pink Panther, and there are plenty of other instances when music is identified with a particular character or film.

King Kong was the first film that truly represented just how important music could be in movies. Music makes the movies flow, often tricks the mind, and adds an important layer to a story and all movies.

SCORE takes viewers through the process of creating music for films. Whether composers are using mainstream instruments or creating sound with other items, it is an absolute that music is definitely what makes a movie great. Whether it is jazz, big band, orchestral, electronic, or whatever, music is instrumental (no pun intended) in the movie business.

Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, John Williams, James Cameron, Trent Reznor, Rachel Portman, Randy Newman, Howard Shore, Quincy Jones, Junkie XL (Tom Holkenborg), Alexandre Desplat, Harry Gregson-Williams, Brian Tyler, Joe Kraemer, Heitor Pereira, Steve Jablonsky, Thomas Newman, Bear McCreary, Moby, Garry Marshall, Jerry Goldsmith, John Debney, Steven Spielberg, Marco Beltrami, Christophe Beck, Tyler Bates, David Arnold, Christopher Young, James Horner, Dario Marianelli, Leonard Maltin, David Newman and many others are part of this interesting, entertaining, and educational film.

Think about how you feel when you first hear a familiar tune like the Star Wars theme welcoming you back for another adventure in a galaxy far, far away. Or when you hear that familiar statement song introducing 007. There is no substitute for music, and music in the movies is just as important as the casting of the actors.

SCORE opens in theaters June 16, 2017.

‘Cars 3’ Junior Kits from Revell are easy and fun

Cars lovers – young and old – will enjoy the new Junior Kits from Revell. The Junior Kits are designed for ages five and up and are easy to put together. Well, pretty easy, anyway.
carsset2
The pieces snap and screw on making the 45 pieces fit together perfectly. The kits even come with a screw and nut connector that fits into the chassis at the end of the assembly process and becomes part of the car. The cars are sturdy, well built, and easy to create. Whether you want Lightning McQueen (and who doesn’t love this red racing champion with a heart of gold?), the new hotshot Jackson Storm, or the female technician Cruz Ramirez, there’s a Cars car for your family.

The instructions are all in pictures, so even young enthusiasts can see what they are supposed to do and what goes where. The only problem I can see with this kit is that an adult will most likely be necessary to firmly fit the wheels inside the tires. Otherwise they don’t require any strength, just enthusiasm and the ability to turn the screw/nut connector. And they are just as easy to take apart.
carsset3
Why would someone want to take apart their perfectly built car? That’s easy. The cars come with two different mouth and eye expressions. So you can make Lightning smile broadly or kind of smirk, and there are eyes to match each mouth.

After the car is assembled, kids will enjoy decorating their brightly colored vehicle with the decals that are included in the kit. This is a step that parents might want to oversee with their kids just to make sure they are put in the right location.
carsset4
And when the car is complete, it actually rolls. The headlights light up and the car emits sounds when the hood is pressed down. This is the real deal. The kit is like two toys in one. First it’s a fun model that is fairly easy to assemble. Second it is a fully functional toy car with lights and sounds.

I put together plenty of models in my youth, and I can honestly say I enjoyed putting this new Lightning McQueen kit together because I saw how well made it is and when I finished I had a great car that didn’t fall apart. It’s sturdy and will be able to withstand plenty of play from your kids. And with the lights and sound the car is more than just a plain plastic automobile.

There are instructions how to change the battery when it runs down, however this is a task for adults to undertake.

These make great gifts for birthday parties and will be treasured at the holiday time. The size of the car is 1:20 scale. Each of the three cars from Cars 3 retails for $24.99.

Convenience and Compactness from RuMe

If you haven’t heard of RuMe then you don’t know about their convenient products. They make traveling and everyday life a little easier.

Sat Pack
hotlogic4hotlogic3
The Sat Pack is a space saving bag that has a variety of uses. It can be used as a convenient backpack or a storage pack for items that you want to put away. Because it compacts, it saves space and when it’s compressed down, it will fit under most beds and in other tight locations. Besides using it around your home, the Sat Pack is perfect for traveling.

So, how does this product work? When you first open it you’ll see zippers and straps and wonder how this bulky pack can do what it is supposed to do. When you pack it full of clothes – I should say stuff it full of clothes or whatever – close the zipper and you have a bulky bag. But then simply sit (or kneel) on the pack and it compresses. Then tighten the straps to keep it in its compressed size.

The Sat Pack will then fit inside your luggage or your carry-on, under your bed, on shelves in your closet, or other tight places. The product itself is lightweight and made of durable material. It lists for $24.95.

Garment Travel Organizer

If you’re like me you don’t like to pack and unpack when you get to your hotel room. And you wonder what has been in the drawers before you got there. The Garment Travel Organizer is perfect for travelers because it serves two purposes.

First, the GTO has one side with four mesh cubes that zipper shut. These are designed for your folded items. Second, the other side holds your hanging items. Simply place them inside the bag on their hangers. There’s no need to take them off of their hangers and then place them on hotel hangers once you arrive in your room. The GTO then folds over. Place this bag inside your luggage and head to the airport.

The best part about the GTO is once you get to your hotel room, simply remove the bag and hang it directly on the closet rod in your room. It comes with straps that attach onto a rod.

The GTO takes garment bags one step farther, with all the bells and whistles. It’s lightweight and machine washable. It lists for $24.95.

Expandable Organizer
rume4rume5
Whether you want –or need- an organizer in your car or your home, the Expandable Organizer is the solution. It compacts to less than one inch thick with a built in handle for easy carrying. Straps hold it shut. Then it opens into an easy and convenient organizer that can expand from two compartments to three, depending on your needs.

This is a great product for the trunk of your car, keeping your groceries upright. No more rolling soda bottles in the back of your car.

And for play, this product holds unruly balls and other toys to keep everything organized and in one place. When not in use, it folds up and slips into a drawer or shelf. The Expandable Organizer lists for $24.95.

Check out their website for other products. RuMe produces accessories to make life easier. They offer single items and also bundled sets. And you aren’t limited to a single color. There are plenty of fun colors and designs to personalize your products.

Poketti Plushies with Pocket Powers

Poketti Plushies with Pocket Powers are adorable soft plush animals with pockets. They are cuddly as well as functional.

What sets this product off from others is the backstory of the company. Two teenage girls, Syndey and Toni, began the company in 2013. Their seventh grade entrepreneurial class inspired them to start their own company. Today the company has eight different designs, each conveying a message of empowerment while at the same time being a functional – and cuddly soft – toy, although toy isn’t quite the right word.

The animals are gender neutral so they are just as appropriate for boys as they are for girls, although girls are the main targets for these items.

Sydney the Penguin comes with a message of confidence, Toni the bunny inspires kindness, Flynn the pig inspires curiosity, Harley the koala comes with the message of creativity, Frankie the panda inspires generosity, Shawn the unicorn inspires innovation, Parker the owl reminds kids to be honest, and Scout the chick inspires strength.

Besides being cute little animals, each of these fellows has a pocket on their back. The pockets are useful for holding phones, glasses, a small notebook, a little toy, and even a tooth for the tooth fairy. Imagine being able to put a tooth in a Poketti at night and finding a gift from the tooth fairy in the pocket in the morning. It makes it that much more memorable and this is something that can be a childhood friend that is passed down through generations.

And when going on a vacation this summer, kids can store their sunglasses or a tube of sunscreen in the pocket. These are definitely useful little plashes.
poketti2

Each Poketti sells for $12.95. The entire series can be purchased for $80.00. Teens can stay in touch with Syndey and Toni through their Twitter (pokettiplushies) and Facebook (poketti) and other social media accounts.

For more information about Syndey and Toni, as well as their company and the Pokettis, visit their website.

Hot Logic is the new way to cook and heat food

Summer is the time of picnics, parties, bar-be-ques, sporting events, and all kinds of get-togethers. With the Hot Logic cooking boxes, it’s easier than ever to cook, reheat, and transport food to wherever you are going, even if it’s just to the office.

With the Hot Logic Electric Lunchbox, you and your family will eat healthier. Forget about fast foods, just put in healthy, delicious food, plug in the box, and it heats it up so when you’re ready to eat, everything will be hot and delicious.

hotlogic1This is a 3-in-1 item. It cooks, heats, and warms your food – even frozen foods. All you need is an electric outlet and you’re ready to cook. And for traveling to your location, check to see if your new autos and SUVs are equipped with them outlets, as many new ones are. If you don’t have an outlet in your car, don’t worry. Simply get the Hot Logic Mini Deluxe models, which come with car inverters.

The Hot Logic Mini also comes with its own Pyrex dish. Simply put your food into the dish, put the dish into the Hot Logic, plug it in, and in a few hours your food is ready to eat. Or, if you are reheating, it won’t take as long. Imagine putting hot dogs and chicken into the Hot Logic, plugging it in, and then taking off for a picnic.

The full size Hot Logic is the right size for a family-sized 9 x 13 casserole dish –(not included). Use your own casserole dish filled with whatever you like – lasagna, chicken, fish, hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. – and even put some frozen veggies in with your meat. In a few hours you’ll have a hot meal. Or, if you prefer to use a frozen meal, just place that into the Hot Logic and you’ll have your comfort food ready to eat without the use of a microwave. If you have it in your office, all you need to do is to plug it in when you get to work and at lunchtime your coworkers will be fighting over the microwave while you are already dining on your favorite meal.

The Hot Logic boxes are insulated and have built-in pockets for the electric cords. The large Hot Logic also includes a cooking shelf (Patented Smart Shelf), which utilizes slow conduction. Both the Hot Logic and the Hot Logic Mini have sturdy handles for easy transportation.

The Hot Logic doesn’t give you instant gratification like a microwave. But there are times when you don’t have a microwave, especially when you’re at a picnic or even a tailgate party. Plug the cord in your automobile and reheat or even cook your food right there, on the spot. These boxes hold the heat so hours later the food is still hot.
hotlogic
These are perfect for dorm rooms too. Imagine your student going to the local farmer’s market, selecting fresh veggies, taking them back to their dorm, and eating a healthy meal without preservatives or other ingredients.

The only thing to remember with these Hot Logics is that you do need to have an electric outlet. They are like portable ovens, only much more convenient.

For tailgating, picnics, dorms, offices, or even holiday parties, the Hot Logics could be just what you need. Put in your favorite food, whether already cooked or not, and you’re set. While everyone else is scrambling to heat up their food, yours is already ready.

Pinkalicious & Peterrific will premier February 2018 on PBS Kids

PinkaPilot_Marker_9-48 (1)
PINKALICIOUS & PETERRIFIC follows the adventures of Pinkalicious and her brother Peter. Pinkalicious imagines creative possibilities everywhere she looks. She is an artist at heart—and, like most creative people, she sees the world differently from others. She knows what she likes, and she’s not afraid to express herself—though she sometimes needs help from her brother, Peter, and her neighborhood friends.

“PBS stations are a go-to destination for the arts in their communities across the country; we often hear from artists that their first exposure to the arts came from PBS programming,” said Linda Simensky, Vice President, Children’s Programming, PBS. “We are thrilled to build on our commitment to the arts with a PBS KIDS series entirely dedicated to the arts and creativity. Through PINKALICIOUS & PETERRIFIC, we hope to encourage children across America to follow their passions and express themselves creatively, while building important skills and having fun.”

PINKALICIOUS & PETERRIFIC is designed to help preschool-age children explore the arts and creativity. “Research shows that participating in the arts strengthens children’s cognitive and emotional skills, and leads to higher academic performance,” said series Executive Producer Dorothea Gillim. “Kids will simply connect with the great characters Pinkalicious and Peter, and their friends Jasmine, Rafael and Lila; the entertaining and quirky stories; and the visually stunning animation.”

The new PBS KIDS series is based on author-artist Victoria Kann’s number-one New York Times-bestselling Pinkalicious book series, which includes 63 titles and has sold more than 23 million copies to date. The most recent book in the series, Peterrific, debuted in May 2017. The HarperCollins book series has been translated into 8 languages, is sold in 9 countries and inspired a stage musical, Pinkalicious: The Musical, which premiered in New York City to sold-out audiences and continues to be performed there and across the country.

“I’m tremendously excited to see the world of Pinkalicious and Peterrific come alive,” said author and illustrator Victoria Kann. “And I’m grateful to PBS and WGBH for helping to empower kids to explore and express their full creativity through this wonderful new series.”

Each episode of PINKALICIOUS & PETERRIFIC will include two 11-minute stories as well as a live-action interstitial and an original song. The series is currently in production at WGBH and its animation partner, Sixteen South, for 38 half-hour episodes and one hour-long special, which will roll out on PBS KIDS beginning in 2018.
