‘Exodus’ Blu-ray from Twilight Time

Exodus
Exodus is one of the all-time classic films. This 1960 adaptation of the best-selling book by Leon Uris tells the story of the birth of the state of Israel, what led up to the historic event, and the aftermath of the United Nations vote leading to the establishment of the country.

The cast is tremendous. Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint, Sal Mineo, Peter Lawford, Lee J. Cobb, and others gather together to tell this historic tale of hardship, discrimination, and determination. The score by Ernest Gold features the heartening theme and from the very first note the film is off and running directly into the late 1940s when the exodus to Israel, then called Palestine, was the only way of survival for many Jews fleeing the persecution in Europe, and the horrible after effects of the holocaust. The score won the Academy Award that year.

This is a story of passion – for history and survival.

Newman plays Ari Ben Canaan, a determined man who is a leader in the fight to declare Palestine a Jewish state. He takes a boatload of Jewish refugees to the front page of newspapers around the world by keeping them on board instead of having them disembark in Cypress where the British are keeping the Jewish refugees. This boat is renamed “Exodus” in reference to the story in the Bible. They all stay on the boat until Britain finally allows them to sail to Palestine.

This is the first part of the epic story. The next part is the effort, both overt and covert, try to establish the country and get self-determination for the Jews. Getting the British to relinquish the territory is difficult. There are plenty of underground efforts, conducted by both the Haganah and the more radical Irgun.

The next part of this story focuses on the aftermath of the declaration of the state of Israel and the immediate attack on the Jews by the Arabs.

Besides Ari Ben Canaan, the central characters in the film are: Kitty Fremont (Saint), an American volunteer who becomes close with a young Danish refugee, Karen (Jill Haworth) the young Danish Jewish girl determined to help establish the country, Dov Landau (Mineo), a refugee who joins the militant Irgun, Akiva (David Opatoshu), one of the heads of the Irgun and Ari’s uncle, Barak (Cobb), Ari’s father and one of the leaders who wants to rely on diplomacy instead of fighting, Taha (John Derek), a childhood friend of Ari’s who is a leader of the Arab community, and Jordana (Alexandra Steward), Ari’s sister and one of the leaders in a Kibbutz.

All of their stories intertwine as the film unfolds and the history of this turbulent and historic time comes to life on the screen. The screenplay was adapted by Dalton Trumbo (who had his own history-making life when he was blacklisted), and wonderfully directed by Otto Preminger.

This Twilight Time Blu-ray edition includes the restored six-track stereo sound. The film was shot on location in the actual places the events took place. If you have not seen this movie, this is the time. It’s one of the top ten classics. And if you have seen this movie, this Blu-ray is a beautiful edition. Exodus is a movie everyone should see.

‘A Fine Pair’ on DVD

finepair
A Fine Pair is a clever and somewhat cute 1968 film starring Rock Hudson and Claudia Cardinale. If you think this is going to be like the Hudson/Day films, think again. It’s a stylish and sophisticated romp through Europe in a story that has plenty of twists and turns.

Hudson is Captain Mike Harmon of the New York Police Department. He’s a by-the-book guy with everything in its place. He likes order and continuity. Cardinale is Esmeralda Marini, an old friend whose father was a policeman in Italy and a friend of Harmon. She’s a free-spirit sexually liberated young woman who knows what she wants.

When Esmeralda arrives in NYC, she goes straight to Harmon with a problem. It turns out she’s a jewel thief. She will be in trouble when the authorities discover the jewels are stolen from one of the richest families. So, as a favor to her deceased father, Harmon decides they have to go to Europe together and put the jewels back in the safe from which they were stolen before the owners discover the theft.

Harmon is an ex-detective and knows his way around a city to find out how to take on a challenge. He does this in Austria with Esmeralda as his accomplice in this reverse caper. Or is it a reverse caper?

While in Austria the two become closer and Harmon begins to let down his stuffy guard. He is slowly converted to the freedom the 1960s has to offer, thanks to the help of Esmeralda. They are cute together, but they are on the opposite side of the law. That is until she tells him she has stolen more jewels and after a clever resolution in Austria they travel to Italy for another reverse caper. Or so he thinks.

Cardinale is adorable in this role. Even though she’s conniving all along, viewers have to enjoy her and root for her.

Composer Ennio Morricone’s score adds fun and lightheartedness to the film. It’s a fun little story with Cardinale showing the freedom of the time and Hudson converting from stodgy to cleverly adventurous. When viewers see the moment he switches, they are in for a treat. This is not one of his best romantic comedy films. As a matter of fact it isn’t one his top five. But it has its moments.

A Fine Pair is part of the Warner Archive Collection and is available from their website. It’s rated PG.

Conair Curl Secret Product Review

curl
Throw away your hot curlers. The latest and greatest item for curling hair is the Curl Secret from Conair. Whether you want tight curls or a beachy wave style, this one gadget does it all.

This is something you have to try for yourself to believe. Take a lock of hair and set it in the Curl Secret. Clamp down on the unit and the device automatically pulls in the hair and wraps it around the tourmaline curler. You see your hair going in, and it does it without any extra effort from you. It simply takes the hair and winds it inside.

The gadget will beep once the hair is all in. Then there will be a series of beeps. The maximum is four beeps and then there will be several beeps in succession telling you the curl is done. Open it up and your beautifully curled hair will fall out.

When I want soft waves, I open my unit after three beeps, then when all of my hair has been curled I run my fingers through it and I get soft, beachy waves. When I want a tight curl, I let it go for the duration.

The great thing about this unit is that it doesn’t tug at your hair. If you have too much to go in, it warns you and stops. Then just open it up and start again. It also does this if the lock of hair is tangled. This is the safety of using this device. I have been using it for a couple months and have never had it hurt my hair or tug at it. It stops cold if something is not right.

Another great aspect of the unit is the tourmaline ceramic, which leaves hair shiny and not frizzy. It’s great for thick hair that tends to be frizzy. With the Curl Secret, the frizz is gone and hair is shiny and curled, all in one step.

I have demonstrated the curl secret to several people who cannot imagine this great technology. It is always met with “oohs” and “ahhs” and sheer amazement.

There might be a slight learning curve to see how long you need to keep your hair in the curler. Straight, fine hair will require the full length of time. Thicker hair might not. You can play with the device to find what works for you. But once you do, you’ll love this little unit. I do.

Go to the Conair website to see what this unit can do.

Norbert Books for Kids

norbert
Who is Norbert? He’s the most adorable little ball of fluff. He’s a sweet little fellow. He’s a three pound registered therapy dog who travels with his mom Julie to put smiles on people’s faces and bring joy to their lives.

Norbert has “written” three books (so far) with amazing art by Julie’s mom Virginia. These books are designed for ages three and up and make wonderful books for nighttime reading or anytime fun.

The first book, Norbert: What Can Little Me Do? sets the stage for this fellow’s background. He is only three pounds and as he goes through situations, he looks at the big world and wonders what his place in it is. He discovers his gift of helping others and bringing some joy into their lives, proving you don’t have to be big to make a difference. Size doesn’t matter. He became a registered therapy dog to spread love. This little guy can put the biggest smile on anyone’s face. That’s what he can do!

Then Norbert looks at what others can do. Norbert: What Can Little You Do? is his follow-up book. Tales of Norbert and his human friends are not only meant to entertain readers – and those being read to – but to inspire everyone to make a difference. As he says, “One little smile can make a BIG difference.” This is definitely an inspiring book for everyone.

In his third book, Norbert & Lil Bub: What Can Little WE Do? Norbert, Julie, Lil Bub, and Lil Bub’s dad Mike, tell a fun story of these two popular animals. Lil Bub is one of the world’s most famous real-life cats. She and Grumpy Cat both have unique faces. Lil Bub’s story is one of helping other animals who need a home. Together Norbert and Lil Bub share an exciting adventure.

All of these books are fun to read and the images add greatly to the stories. Mixed media artwork brings kids right into the stories and endears the characters to readers – along with the narratives. They go hand in hand, and rightly so. The books are a family collaboration, after all. With Norbert’s stories, penned by his mom Julie, and Virginia’s art, the books are keepers to be handed down from generation to generation. Some books last a lifetime and through the years get worn with love, and these will be among them.

‘Nothing Left Unsaid: Gloria Vanderbilt and Anderson Cooper’ Premiers on HBO and CNN

cooper
What do a legendary fashion designer/artist/heiress and a TV host/anchor have in common? If they are iconic designer Gloria Vanderbilt and popular CNN star Anderson Cooper they have plenty in common. Actually, they are mother and son. Nothing Left Unsaid: Gloria Vanderbilt and Anderson Cooper is a new look at these two high-profile people.

“It was kind of surreal,” Cooper told the media about interviewing his mother for this documentary. “I mean, we all have relationships with our parents that change as they age and we age, but oftentimes, we don’t change the way we talk to our parents when we’re with our parents. And I think that’s kind of one of the messages of this film. This idea of leaving nothing left unsaid is something that I feel really strongly about. My dad died when I was 10. My mom’s father died when she was 15 months old. We both grew up with this fantasy that there was a letter out there somewhere – an idle letter from my dad somewhere out there, and that she had a letter from her father out there. And both of us still kind of secretly believe that letter will someday show up.” He added, “And I didn’t want to have that feeling with my mom.”

In the process of preparing this documentary, a treasure trove of old documents and pictures were discovered. Cooper acknowledged that he has been interviewing his mom for most of his life because he always wanted to be a TV journalist and took it upon himself to simply interview her. They discovered old footage of their early interviews and plenty of other personal items too.

“I was conducting interviews with my mom – the open of the film is some stuff that I shot on a beach with my mom, I think, in 1989 or 1990, the year I graduated college, probably the year after my brother killed himself. And I had totally forgotten about all this footage that I’d shot,” Cooper said with delight.

Cooper is excited to show viewers exactly what his mom is like. “My mom will turn 92 in February. Her birth made headlines. When she was 10, she was the subject of a really extraordinary custody battle. It was called ‘the trial of the century’ long before the O.J. Simpson trial was called ‘the trial of the century.’ And her entire life has played out on a very brightly lit stage, and I think this film is – the idea really behind it is – you may know her name, but you really don’t know who she is or what her story is.”

This project was as much for mother and son as it was for the viewers. “I know my mom in a way that I didn’t know her a year ago, or a year and a half ago, when we started this process. And we actually have written a memoir together that will be coming out around the same time of the documentary. And it was really an extension of this documentary, the idea being, changing that conversation that you have with your parent.”

“Well, I feel absolutely the same way,” Vanderbilt acknowledged. “We started communicating and became close in a way that we hadn’t before.”

About his mother’s life, Cooper conceded, “She comes from a time and a place that in many ways doesn’t exist any longer. The world that she was born into in February 1924 was this incredible world. She was born into this family which, on paper, was this incredibly wealthy family, one of the richest families in America, living in palaces, really, in these enormous mansions that they called cottages, but which are today open to the public, and they’re just extraordinary structures. And that kind of world, that kind of lifestyle just doesn’t exist.”

The film shows an exciting relationship between mother and son and is informative for viewers who think they know these two celebrities. Nothing Left Unsaid: Gloria Vanderbilt and Anderson Cooper premiers April 9, 2016 on HBO and April 30, 2016 on CNN. It’s truly a story of family.

Bonus Features on the ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Combo Pack

starwars

In Star Wars: The Force Awakens the force awakens in a young woman and the dark force awakens in a young men. The Blu-ray combo pack is filled with plenty of interesting and fun bonus features.

The little star of the film is the newest droid, BB-8. A bonus feature looks at how the filmmakers brought him to life, so to speak. They built several configurations of the little droid: one worked by a puppeteer, one that wiggled, one on a carrier, and on a trike. It’s interesting to see how imaginative they were in creating him. Besides this adorable little droid, there were 105 various creatures in the film, some were animatronic, puppets, and some were completely CG.

The folks at ILM discuss how they used “restraint” in their creativity and created the “grand illusion” in the film. The effects, they say, were only meant to “fill in” the story.

Training, choreography, and cardio buildup were part of the preparation by the actors for their grueling scenes. They discuss their pre-filming training and the filmmakers discuss the epic and visually striking light saber scene, which takes place at night in a snowy forest.

John Williams returned to create the magnificent score for this seventh film in the franchise. He knew he needed to keep the flavor of the franchise while adding to the new characters and paying homage to the returning characters.

The first table read of the script was documented and all the actors and filmmakers remark on this memorable and historic day. The script was read aloud by Mark Hamill. This was the first time the cast gathered together, bringing the original actors together with the new generation. Harrison Ford said that the casting choices were “audacious” and viewers see how they all reacted to their first meeting.

“Secrets of The Force Awakens” is an in-depth feature looking at the entire production, from the time George Lucas handed over the helm of LucasFilm to Kathleen Kennedy. Director J.J. Abrams and writer Lawrence Kasdan talk about their involvement in this film, and the actors discuss their contributions and experiences. For instance, filming in 120 degrees in the Abu Dhabi desert was daunting. And working with BB-8 was a delight. Other interesting tidbits in this educational and enlightening feature look at motion capture and the Skellig Island location for the final scene. Harrison Ford also recounts how he felt about his character of Han Solo and how in this film “his destiny is resolved.”

Deleted scenes and a feature about how the filmmakers are using the Star Wars franchise for a “Force for Change” by giving back to various charities and working with UNICEF round out the remaining features on the bonus disc in the combo pack. Needless to say, there are plenty of interesting aspects of creating this movie that are explained in all the additional features included in this pack.
