‘A Year and Change’

yearandchange

A Year and Change is a story of discovery and change. The film follows Owen (Bryan Greenberg) as he reevaluates his life and decides that his life is not what he wants it to be. So change is needed.

Owen is a vending machine manager. He goes from business to business emptying the change from the machines and stocking their contents. He is divorced with a young son. Owen doesn’t spend much time with his son and spends most of his time drinking and doing drugs. To say he isn’t the model father is a gross understatement.

During the course of a year, Owen changes his life and turns his future around. He reconnects with his son and quits all his carousing around and bad habits of drinking and drugs. He also falls in love with a woman (Claire van der Boom) and it looks like things are finally going well for this man.

“It’s such a pleasure to represent this poignant, life-affirming film,” says Lise Romanoff, Managing Director/CEO of Vision Films. “It has a tremendous cast of talented actors, an inspirational and entertaining story and an ending that will stay with you for a while. In other words, a perfect Thanksgiving treat!”

Producer Emily Ting said, “A Year and Change is such a sweet film about redemption and second chances. I can’t wait to finally share the film with the world, and I think we found the perfect partner in Vision Films”.

The movie is slow moving and a bit dry however the message that we can all change is liberating and hopeful. Owen goes from a pessimistic man to an optimistic one. He goes from seeing the changing leaves in the fall as just dying leaves to seeing the beauty in their colors.

A Year and Change is not rated however it is not suitable for young kid. It opens in theaters November 24, 2015.

‘Murder, She Baked: A Plum Pudding Mystery’ on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries

Murder She Baked A Plum Pudding Mystery Final Photo Assets
Alison Sweeny and the cast of the popular Hallmark Movies & Mysteries movie Murder, She Baked: A Chocolate Chip Cookie Mystery return for another helping of cookies and murder. This time it is a holiday-themed story and baker Hannah Swensen (Sweeney) is caught up in another mystery along with all the baking for holiday orders. Whew. How does she do it? Your mouth will be watering with all the goodies presented in Murder, She Baked: A Plum Pudding Mystery. Oh yes. There is also the fact that a murder occurs.

With preparations under way for Christmas, the Crazy Elf Tree lot is where there is plenty of activity. With everyone picking out their Christmas trees and also indulging in some of the fabulously delicious treats supplied by Hannah’s bakeshop, this is a busy little place. And it gets even busier when the owner of the lot is found murdered in the office. Guess who finds the body? Hannah, of course.

While the police are investigating the murder, Hannah decides to investigate on her own. Actually, she and her mother Delores (Barbara Niven) stumble across some clues while they are out and about. But Delores is intent on keeping her daughter out of the business of solving the crime. She is trying to get Hannah to settle down.

Hannah is currently dating two men: Norman (Gabriel Hogan) and Detective Mike Kingston (Cameron Mathison). Mike warns her to stay out of police business but you know Hannah. Her curiosity is as deep as her cookies are sweet. Plus, it doesn’t help her situation with Mike that when she discovered the body she was on a date with Norman.

While Hannah is baking to her heart’s content, and to the delight of her customers, she puts the pieces of the puzzle together and also deals with the fact that some of her friends are rooting for her to choose Mike while her mother is nudging her toward Norman. With baking, men, and a murder, this is definitely a movie filled to the brim.

Hannah’s sweet personality and keen mind are a great combination. And Sweeney is charming in the role.

One word of warning when watching this movie – beware of all the sweets in Hannah’s bakeshop. If your mouth isn’t watering and you don’t crave cookies or pastries by the end of this movie, you haven’t paid attention to all the goodies in the show. Besides the interpersonal relationships and the actual crime, the delicacies are the icing on the cake (pun intended).

‘Northpole: Open for Christmas’ on Hallmark Channel

northpoleone
Northpole: Open for Christmas is the sequel to last year’s popular Hallmark Channel movie Northpole. Bailee Madison reprises her role of Clementine, a spunky elf who gets an assignment to reintroduce the Christmas spirit to a woman who has lost her way.

The secret of how Santa flies around the world in one night is this – he has several power stations throughout the world that spur on the magic of his flight. Unfortunately, one site is powering down. This Inn has just been inherited by Mackenzie (Lori Loughlin), a high-powered New York businesswoman. Her aunt bequeathed the Northern Lights Inn to Mackenzie, who travels to Vermont with the intention of selling the property.

Although she has great memories of her childhood at the Inn, Mackenzie doesn’t feel any special attachment to the property. That is until Clementine arrives to guide her back to the magic, fun, and wonder of the holiday.

Mackenzie decides to fix up the Inn before selling it so that gives Clementine some time to get her to change her mind. The Inn has been one of Santa’s beacons for a long time and if goes dark, then Santa won’t be able to make his rounds this Christmas. So it is imperative that Clementine brings the spirit of the holiday back to Mackenzie, with a little help from the staff at the Inn who are also Santa’s helpers.

Besides the elves, Clementine gets some human help from Jack (Dermot Mulroney), the carpenter who is fixing up the Inn, and his daughter Jenny (Ava Telek), a young girl filled with all the joy and wonder of the season.

‘A Dogwalker’s Christmas Tale’ on UP

A Dog Walkers Christmas Tale
A Dogwalker’s Christmas Tale is a light little film filled with Christmas spirit. Actually, it’s Luce Lockhart who is filled with the Christmas spirit. And it is infectious.

Luce (Lexi Giovagnoli) is a rich, spoiled college student who never thinks about a price tag. She spends all her parents’ money on gifts for her friends. She is generous and definitely exuberant about Christmas. Then her boyfriend of three months dumps her, telling her she has no substance. Luce retreats to her parents’ home in the suburbs to lick her wounds and celebrate the holiday with family. The thing is, her parents have gone to Africa on a charity mission.

The neighbor hires Luce to walk their dog to earn a few extra dollars for the holiday. Luce, who has never had a job, decides it would be an interesting thing so she takes on the challenge. The neighbor, Missy Paxton (Dina Meyer) is the typical high-class woman with the perfect wardrobe and impeccable taste. Actually, that is also Luce. The two could be poster women for Rodeo Drive.

Luce meets a group of dog owners at the local dog park. They form a shaky friendship. Dean (Jonathan Bennett) is a vet student who is also taking care of a friend’s dog. He is instantly attracted to Luce, but she doesn’t have the same feelings. Then, when the word gets out that the Paxton development company is going to bulldoze the park and build a luxury day spa on the property, Dean thinks Luce can save the park. After all, her boss is Byron Paxton (Patrick Muldoon).

Luce really wants the spa. She loves massages and mani/pedis. But her friendship with the local dog owners puts her in a dilemma. She can either maintain her spoiled attitude or do something nice for others and the community.

Okay, so you know what she is going to do. After all, this is a happy Christmas story. The best part of the story, however, is the ending when Luce and the others realize who has the final say in the project.

Yes, this is a simplistic little movie, but isn’t that what TV viewers want during the holiday season?

A Dogwalker’s Christmas Tale premiers Sunday, November 15, 2015 on UP. It is now available to buy or rent on Digital HD and VOD.

Antonio Banderas Talks about ‘The 33’

33
“We are all alive,” read the crumbled note. A media audience of roughly one billion people let out a collective sigh. That fateful moment dates back to 2010 in the aftermath of a gold-copper mine collapse in San Jose, Chile. Two tense-filled months would pass before the 33 entrapped miners finally emerge from an area dubbed “the Refuge,” located far within the bowels of the earth.

Recounting those riveting, tension filled days, director Patricia Riggen’s movie, The 33, focuses not only on the men, but also their families, the rescuers, and the Chilean politicians, who risked their careers to facilitate the rescue.

Antonio Banderas was tapped to portray the miners’ indefatigable leader Mario Sepulveda. It turned out to be a lesson in both humility and affirmation regarding the importance of treasuring the simple, immaterial pleasures of life such as love and family.

Still looking slightly gaunt from the restrictive 1,000 calorie a day he sustained during the film, Banderas remarked, “Something as simple as an empanada becomes unbelievably important and reminds us, outside of the mine, that we are involved in this crazy world where if you don’t have a certain brand of car that you’re not going to be happy.”

“When I saw the finished movie for the first time what popped out at me very clearly was how symbolic everything becomes, because you have this masculine, testosterone, dark side of the movie down there in the cave. Then you have this beautiful, light, sunny female world outside. Both of them were fighting to find each other again. I don’t think the miners realized how hard the women kept fighting for their men until they saw the movie at the world premiere. There were a lot of tears shed that night.”

It was a difficult shot, according to Riggin, with the natural settings providing the backdrop. She injected, “We walked into the mine 35 times, 14 hours a day, six days a week with all these men – 33 hard hats, boots, and working under very dangerous conditions – no food, bad air, no bathrooms. It is the real thing.”

Banderas quickly interjected, “For me the most physically demanding part were the mines, themselves. They were very toxic with a lot of methane gas. Breathing it leaves you with this metallic taste in your mouth for days. We were also operating heavy trucks that produced a lot of carbon monoxide. So we were breathing that the entire day, while rocks were falling down on the top of our heads.”

Staying at a small motel, only two miles from the original mine collapse, presented its own set of challenges. Banderas amusingly recalled, “It sounded like a horror movie every morning around 5:30 a.m. We would fight over the shower to get a dribble of hot water. Being decent people we used the soap the miners said was the best to take all the dirt from our bodies.

“You know the Holy Shroud? That’s what our beds looked like in the morning. Two months after the movie wrapped I was still getting dirt out of my ears.”

One of the primarily goals for the 55-year-old actor was to play Mario, who fellow miners referred to as “Super Mario,” as “a survivor from the very earliest stages of his life. His mother died delivering him and he lived with a sense of loss his whole life.”

Banderas laughingly concedes, “I think I have a little of Mario’s personality in a way, because I am a little out of my mind like him. I like to explore new things and adventure is a word that defines my life and I’m going to continue to do that until the day I die.”

A native of Malaga, Spain, Banderas first aspired to become a professional soccer until a broken foot permanently sidelined that choice. Turning to acting, his experience at the ARA Theatre-School and the College of Dramatic Art, along with street performances, eventually landed him a spot with the Spanish National Theatre.

Earning the attention of Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, he made his 1982 screen debut in Labyrinth of Passion. Their working relationship would continue throughout the 1980’s with titles such as Matador, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and the controversial Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down that sparked the attention of Hollywood.

What followed was a string of hits such as The Mambo Kings, Philadelphia, Desperado, Evita, and The Mask of Zorro.

In 2003, he took a detour to Broadway, starring in Maury Yeston’s musical Nine which earned him Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk awards, along with a Tony Award nomination. A family favorite for kids of all ages, Banderas lent his voice to Puss in Boots in the Shrek franchise.

Next up, he’ll step into the shoes of hard-drinking, romantic Cuban Police Detective Mario Conde. Starz television network is developing the series titled Havana Quartet, based on four books by acclaimed Cuban novelist Leonardo Padura.

What has happened to those 33 survivors? Riggin provided an update, “I think this group of men are still really hurt. The wound is open and very raw. Some of them are old and kinda retired, but they do need the money still. Some of the younger healthier ones are in the mine out of necessity, but they can’t work under ground. They work in open mines.

“And others would love to go back to the mines, but no one will hire them, because they are famous. Famous miners are not good to have, because if your mine collapses the New York Times finds out. So they really are struggling trying to find jobs.”

Painfully conscious of the miners’ plight, Riggin and the film’s producers made provisions for their financial well-being. She pointed out, “In the past there have been other books and projects, but they’ve never been part of it. This is a very different case. From the beginning the producers signed an agreement giving them rights and making them partners throughout the whole process. Many were even hired in different capacities to work on the film.”

The 33 opens November 13, 2015. It’s rated PG-13 for a disaster sequence and some language.

‘A Child is Waiting’ on Blu-ray

childBurt Lancaster and Judy Garland star in this extremely dramatic 1963 movie about mental illness. A Child is Waiting is intense and well acted.

Dr. Matthew Clark (Lancaster) heads a boarding school for special needs children. This man has empathy for the children and some controversial methods. He demands, in a nice way, that the children follow directions, join in activities, and learn to do things. He won’t allow them to sit alone and not take part in things. He knows that if they can learn to do things, even simple things, they will ultimately be more productive in their lives.

Jean Hansen (Garland) is the new music teacher at the school. She applied for the job to make a contribution to the world, unaware of what she was getting into. Immediately upon her arrival an autistic boy named Reuben befriends her. Reuben and Jean form a friendship that could be disruptive to the boy in the scheme of things. She devotes too much time to him and is berated by Dr. Clark. It is difficult for her to grasp his tough love methods. She is more of a nurturing woman but ultimately learns that his methods are for the good of the students.

The movie is intense and highlights the plight of special needs children in the 1960s. This was a time when they were referred to as “retarded” and all lumped into the same category. Some parents could not deal with their special needs kids while others embraced the lives of their children. Reuben’s parents (Gena Rowlands and Steven Hill) were the former. They basically had no contact with him in the two years since he was admitted to the school. Reuben’s situation caused a conflict in their relationship ultimately leading to their divorce. Every week little Reuben waited for one of them to visit on visiting day. But they never came.

Delving into the emotions of the parents, children, and the school staff, the movie shines a spotlight on the issue of mentally disabled children. It is an interesting topic and definitely intense.
