Interview with ‘Creed’ Star Michael B. Jordan

Creed00906.dngMichael B. Jordan was already living the life of a boxer before the first punch landed in Creed, the latest installment of the Rocky Balboa franchise opening Nov. 25, 2015. The project reunited him with award winning Fruitvale Station writer/director Ryan Coogler, who wrote the part specifically for Jordan before the movie was even pitched to Sylvester Stallone.

Partially paralleling the initial Rocky outing, Jordan’s character, Adonia Johnson, is going nowhere fast on a shady prize fighting circuit. Heading for Philly, Adonis seeks out his father, Apollo Creed’s, former nemesis and eventual closest friend to train him. Layered among the fight scenes is an emotionally wrought coming of age story.

“Fortunately, I was already in good shape when we were ready to shoot. I had completely changed my diet, did a lot of weight training and cardiovascular workouts, and boxed six times a week. Aside from ABA Heavyweight Champion Anthony Bellew, who fights me in the ring, all the other boxers in the film were also pros. I’ve fallen in love with boxing and continue to work out in the gym,” explained the 28-year old, Newark-reared actor.

“Sylvester was smart, supportive, and open to collaboration. He helped me master boxing techniques for the fight scenes. But there was one angle that was impossible to film without me taking the punch. Sylvester warned me, but I could see him in the corner with a large smirk on his face. He knew what was coming.”

While Jordan is hoping that Creed will be the movie that pivots him onto Hollywood’s “A-list,” he’s already chalked up an impressive resume that outdistances someone twice his age. It all started when a doctor’s receptionist casually suggested that his mom, Donna, should get her brood of three, Jamila, Jordan, and younger brother Khalid, into modeling.

His introduction was print ads for Modell’s sporting goods and Frito Lay, and by 12 years of age Jordan landed guests roles on both the Bill Crosby Show, and The Sopranos. His first principal film role was in 2001’s Hardball starring Keanu Reeves, followed by a three year stint as Reggie in ABC’s daytime series All My Children. Despite his tender age, Jordan received NAACP Image Award nominations in 2005 through 2007.

“As a kid I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up, but then acting came to me. The thing about growing up in Newark was that it causes you to dream big,” he said. Unlike the vast majority of aspiring actors, he’s never been forced to hold down a “day job.”

In fact, Jordan’s career heated up so fast, that he resorted to being home schooled during his junior and senior grades. Nevertheless, he continued to play basketball for his alma mater – Newark Arts High School.
His first luxury expenditure was a BMW car. He laughingly conceded, “It was used, but the local police couldn’t understand why a 17-year-old was driving such a car and thought I must be dealing drugs.”

Standing almost 6 feet tall, Jordan’s athletic prowess made him a natural for the role of quarterback Vince Howard in NBC’s Friday Night Lights. When that series wrapped in 2011, he was attached to another popular NBC series, Parenthood, playing a recovered alcoholic named Alex.

Seen at neighborhood multiplexes, Jordan played a Tuskegee pilot in Red Tails, and a teenage boy who developed superpowers in Chronicle, but the role that generated the most critical acclaim was the Sundance Film Festival favorite Fruitvale Station. Extremely topical, it won both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award for United States Dramatic Film.

Jordan confided, “After Chronicle I told my agent I wanted to do a gritty, independent film. He gave me ‘Fruitvale’ to read and I started crying. I got so much attention and success off that tragic event, that he gave me a bittersweet feeling.”

Based on a true story Fruitvale Station chronicles the last day of Bay Area’s Oscar Grant III’s life. Getting into a confrontation with a person from his past, the BART Police intervenes. An unarmed Oscar ends up being shot in the back by one of the officers on the station platform. The officer was subsequently found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 11 months in jail.

Boasting the good looks and acting chops of a young Denzel Washington, he’s been singled out by publications like Variety, Time, People, Entertainment Weekly, and GQ as “the actor to watch.”

Earlier this year, Jordan crashed another color barrier by becoming the first African-American to portray one of Marvel Comic’s major superheroes – Johnny Storm, the Human Torch in Fantastic Four. When his casting was announced it created an Internet fury among diehard fans.

Looking at it philosophically, Jordan wasn’t surprised. “People are used to seeing something in one way. I just kinda accepted it. You can’t make everyone happy.”

Quickly rising to Jordan’s defense, 92-year-old superhero creator Stan Lee told Entertainment Weekly, “I thought it was a great idea.”

Ironically, his middle name is Bakari, which in Swahili means “of noble promise.” It has all the makings of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Up on the Wooftop

wooftopDid you know that dogs help out in the North Pole? Yep. Dogs and elves are Santa’s helpers. Toby is one of the canine crew. He’s a peppy little pup and full of excitement and oftentimes mischief. When the head elves want to kick him out, Santa insists that Toby is part of their family and will definitely stay in the North Pole. Up on the Wooftop is the story of how Toby realizes his dreams of leading Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve and becoming part of a loving family that accepts him for who he is.

After causing some ruckus with the reindeer, Toby is still intent on proving he has what it takes to lead the team. He overhears Santa’s plan to take the reindeer out on a trial run to see how they perform and the little guy sneaks onto the sleigh. Unbeknownst to Santa, Toby falls out of the sleigh and lands in a house in Iowa.

Did I forget to mention that the dogs talk? The only people that can hear them, however, are those who believe in Santa and the magic of Christmas. So, when Toby lands smack dab in the middle of the Anderson’s household, he has to convince them that he is part of Santa’s team and needs to get back to the North Pole. That’s not a difficult task when it comes to the kids, but the parents are different – especially the father who is hassled at work and trying to cope with his nasty boss while walking the line between his family and his work.

Toby ultimately ends up proving his worth and helping this fractured family find their way back to each other and in the end, he gets exactly what he has wanted all his life.

The movie is something for young kids. It’s probably not going to have a lot of appeal to adults alone. The saving grace of the film is the adorable little dog. His face is sweet and it’s impossible not to smile when you see a close-up of him. There are some “naughty” scenes in the movie but for the most part it is a simple little holiday film. Up on the Wooftop is not rated.

A LEGO Brickumentary

lego
With over 100 LEGO pieces for every person on the planet, to say the LEGO Company is impressive is an understatement. LEGO is the number two toy company in the world, and all they produce is one product. That’s an amazing accomplishment for a company started in Denmark in 1916 by a carpenter. A LEGO Brickumentary is an interesting film about the history of LEGOs and their impact on generations of users around the planet.

LEGO bricks inspire imagination and creativity among all users – young and old. While the company had some financial problems at one point, they realized that the consumer was the driving force behind everything at LEGO and soon the company was on top again.

With the mini figures, theme sets (space, farm, etc.), and the licensed themed sets (Star Wars, etc.), LEGOs are as popular as ever. As a matter of face, there is a BrickCon, Brick World, and Brick Fair filled with all things LEGO. Not only are the designers and Master Builders at the company driving the product to great heights (figuratively and literally), but also the consumers and professionals are making their marks with the LEGO pieces.

LEGOs have been used for architectural models and as psychological therapy. Creating anything with these little plastic pieces is an accomplishment for users. Innovative ideas from the LEGO community have also inspired others to create and let their imaginations run wild.

A life-size X-Wing fighter from Star Wars includes over 8 tons of LEGO bricks. This impressive construction is 42 times bigger than the one consumers can purchase to create themselves. It is a tremendous accomplishment and a feather in the hat of the LEGO Company to have this X-wing fighter built from their plastic bricks. Imagine seeing a life-size X-wing fighter. It’s an impressive feat yet completely do-able, thanks to the imaginations at LEGO.

And with the expansion of LEGOLAND and the LEGO Discovery Center, families get to immerse themselves in all things LEGO.

To learn all about this amazing company and all it has inspired during the last century, check out A LEGO Brickumentary. It’s rated G and is available on Blu-ray and DVD.

Arlo Plush Medium from ‘The Good Dinosaur’

Disney’s The Good Dinosaur pairs a sweet little Apatosaurus dinosaur named Arlo with a little cave boy named Spot. There’s no doubt these characters will be beloved by both boys and girls.

The Medium Size Arlo Plush stands approximately 19 ½ inches high. His neck and front legs have wires inside to make this little fellow poseable and also keep his long neck up and his body straight when he is standing so he won’t fall over. arlosm
arlo materialWith all his features embroidered on the soft plush, there is nothing to break – or pull – off. He’s made of polyester and is very soft to the touch. The sculpturing on his “skin” looks like there are scales on his body however it’s just the pattern on the material so he is completely smooth, soft and huggable.

This fellow has a wide smile and somewhat crossed brown eyes. He definitely looks like a little kid’s best friend. This guy will cheer up anyone who is having a bad day.
arlo3The medium size is perfect for cuddling and as a bedtime partner, however if the medium size isn’t big enough there is also a large 23-inch Arlo (retailing for $39.95). Besides the plush toys, there are plenty other Arlo and Spot toys and action figures as well as a tree ornament, clothing and other items.

Dyson V6 Mattress – Product Review

When you see the Dyson V6 Mattress handheld vacuum you might wonder what makes this different from the other Dyson handheld vacuum. The difference is the additional motorized brush designed especially for mattresses. When was the last time you vacuumed your mattress? Have you ever thought about it? We often hear of bedbug outbreaks in hotels but we don’t hear about dust mites.

No matter how often you change your sheets, your mattress still collects dust mites and skin cells. That’s not going to stop unless you have a special covering over your mattress; more than simply a regular mattress pad. The average bed is filled with dust mites, their feces, and skin cells. Doesn’t it make your stomach turn when you think about that?

The Dyson V6 Mattress will alleviate your concerns and put your mind to rest, along with your body. The motorized mattress tool has stiff bristles that agitate the fibers in your mattress and sucks up the mites, feces, and skin cells. The HEPA filter captures particles so they are not released back into the air.

If you have allergy sufferers in your house, remember that dust mites can trigger attacks and even asthma. Inhaling the mites or their feces or contact with skin are the ways our bodies come in contact with these disgusting little guys. Have you ever seen a mite through a microscope? They are creepy bugs that are just as menacing as they are ugly.

Besides the specially designed motorized mattress brush, the Dyson V6 Mattress includes a soft brush for cleaning gentle surfaces like keyboards, a combination tool for cleaning shelves and other areas, and a crevice tool. And emptying the bin is as simple as a push of a button. You don’t have to touch anything that has been captured by the vacuum.

The Dyson V6 Mattress is compact and lightweight. It is quieter than the Dyson V6 Trigger, their other handheld vacuum. The main difference, however, is the motorized mattress tool.

After receiving this vacuum to test, my first thought was that I wish I could take it with me whenever I go to a hotel. I hope hotels and motels know about this vacuum!

Because we spend at least a third of our lives in bed, it makes sense that the mattress should be as clean as possible. According to Environment, Health and Safety Online, “A typical used mattress may have anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million mites inside. (Ten percent of the weight of a two year old pillow can be composed of dead mites and their droppings.”

DC80Mattress_710x400_Shop_Product_Page_Gallery_Image_6.ashx
There are many ways to help control mites in your environment. Read more at the ehso website.

In the meantime, remember that the Dyson V6 Mattress is one important tool in keeping your family a little healthier. Even with special mattress covers, it is a good idea to vacuum your mattresses. After all, every little bit helps.

If you are considering a handheld vacuum, the Dyson V6 Mattress adds a little extra to the package. It does everything the other handhelds do, plus a little more. And you will be happier when you get into bed.

Disney Deluxe Mini Animators’ Collection Box Set

WOW. The new Disney Animators’ Collection Box Set is an amazing product. Anyone who loves the Disney princesses (and Tinker Bell and Kristoff) and the animators’ collection dolls will love this set of 15 mini dolls.

2015AnimatorDollSet 2 sm
The presentation alone is enough to put any little girl into Disney doll heaven. The front of the box as well as the inside panels are covered with drawings of the young Disney characters and closes with a magnet to keep everyone safe and secure. There is a handle on top to make it easy to transport for a play date, to grandma’s house, or simply from one room to another.

Open the box and all you will hear from girls young and old is “OMG” or “Oh My Gosh!” Fifteen mini dolls each have their own little cubbyhole: Cinderella, Belle, Jasmine, Aurora, Pocahontas, Ariel, Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Rapunzel, Tiana, Snow White, Tinker Bell, Merida, and Mulan. These 5” dolls can either be taken out to play with or remain untouched in this beautiful display box. If you are a “collector,” then you will most likely keep them as is. However the majority of us and parents of little girls will gladly disentangle the dolls for play. They can still return the their cubbyholes without the confinements of their attachments. The clear plastic covering maintains the dolls in their compartments.

The size of these individual dolls is perfect for little hands. Young imaginations will run wild with this set. Perhaps Kristoff will play with Belle or Pocahontas will become best friends with Mulan. There’s no end to the creativity young minds will have with the set.

dolls
The Animators’ Collection dolls have been beloved by Disney fans for years. The 16” dolls reflect the animators’ vision of the iconic characters as children. After the initial success of this doll line, Disney Consumer Products began releasing the dolls in mini-sets. Each mini play set comes with the 5” doll and tiny toys to accompany the character. The good part about this is that a child could play with one character with all of their accessories. The down side (although not a big downside) is that there is only one main doll in the play set. This brand new deluxe set includes all 15 dolls sans their little additions. This set is the most amazing doll set available.

This season the Disney Deluxe Mini Animators’ Collection Box is pretty much guaranteed to be the hit of the holiday, whether it is Chanukah or Christmas, or even a birthday. It is truly an item that will take your breath away, whether you are young or old.

Sleep Inn in Scottsdale, Arizona

sleepinn
If you’re planning on visiting Scottsdale, Arizona for business or pleasure, think about staying at the Sleep Inn. It’s part of the Choice Hotels, which includes Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Quality, Clarion, Rodeway Inn, MainStay Suites, Suburban, and EconoLodge.

Sleep Inn isn’t filled with bells and whistles. There is no restaurant or bar in the hotel, however they are adjacent and plenty more are within a few miles.

breakfast2
Included in your stay is a free hot breakfast that includes several options, one of which is a Belgian waffle. If you’re watching your weight, you can get yogurt and fruit. In the afternoon fresh cookies are complimentary for all guests. A fitness room and outdoor pool and spa are also part of the facility.

One thing I look for whenever I travel is free parking. I find it appalling when a hotel charges to park your car. I also require free Wi-Fi. Both parking and Wi-Fi are free as well as a daily USA Today and Wall Street Journal.

Sleep Inn has a complimentary shuttle service that will take guests anywhere within a 5 mile radius. Just call the front desk and let them know you want to go to a specific location. If it’s in range, you don’t have to drive yourself or find a taxi.

Another personal preference of mine is a non-smoking hotel, not simply non-smoking rooms. This hotel fit the bill.

So, what was our room like? Granted, it wasn’t huge but it was comfortable. We had a choice between two queens or one king bed. All of the rooms are the same size so select which option best fits your needs. The shower was fabulous. I really enjoy a stall shower instead of a bathtub/shower combination. This shower was a pleasure to use.

beds
The room also included a microwave and refrigerator. Let me tell you how handy it is to have a refrigerator in the room, especially if you want something cold to drink in the middle of the night or a place to put your leftovers from dinner. This might seem like a small thing, but for many travelers a refrigerator is a convenience that comes in handy.

Having stayed in several different hotels in Scottsdale, I can honestly say I will return to the Sleep Inn. It’s comfortable, convenient, and clean. Plus, the staff went out of their way to help all guests. This was without a doubt the friendliest hotel staff I have ever encountered. Since my stay there was not specific to travel writing, the staff wasn’t aware that I would be writing a review. Usually when a hotel knows a reviewer is staying there they go out of their way to make them comfortable in hope of getting a good review. This time the staff went out of their way without any ulterior motive.

All of the staff deserves a thumbs up, and especially Nick, the Director of Operations.

Sleep Inn is located at 16630 Scottsdale Road. Their direct phone number is 480-998-9211. The nationwide phone number is 866-477-6424.
