‘Christmas in the Smokies’ will air on INSP

smokies
The first feature length motion picture for INSP is a warm holiday tale. Christmas in the Smokies stars Sarah Lancaster as a woman who discovers there really is some magic in the holidays.

Shelby (Lancaster) has lived in a small town all her life. She and her parents own and run a berry farm, which produces a variety of fruit for their delectable creations: pies, jams, etc. The farm means everything to Shelby so when she learns they might lose the farm she goes into panic mode. Their debt is enormous. How can she raise enough money to save the farm?

On top of her concerns is the fact that the land is being eyed by a business developer who wants to bring the small community into the 21st century with big businesses instead of the small businesses that make up the charm of the town.

There is one more thing causing stress for this hard-working, well-liked, and good-meaning young woman. Her former boyfriend, Mason Wyatt (Alan Powell), who had left her years ago, has returned. Mason is a sore spot for Shelby. She hates him for running out on her, yet the feelings they shared are still there. Love runs deep.

Mason is a somewhat successful country singer and has come home to organize his life. His career is rising but he hasn’t had that really big break yet. Mason’s feelings for Shelby are as strong as hers for him, however neither one of them knows it. The only person who realizes they belong together is her father (Barry Corbin), who does everything to get them together.

When it looks like the farm is going to be foreclosed on, Mason agrees to a benefit concert to help raise the needed funds to keep the farm up and running. But will that be enough?

In the end, Shelby manages to save her family farm on her own. Thanks to a “Christmas Miracle” things will finally be okay for her…and Mason.

‘The Good Dinosaur’ – Movie Review

spot and arlo
Not since Dino and Bam Bam have a dinosaur and a cave boy been so endearing. The Good Dinosaur is a whirlwind of emotions with two adorable characters at the center.

First of all, everything in this story is backward from what we think of as “normal.” Yes, even for an animated feature. The dinosaurs have evolved to be the dominant life forms and the humans are “critters.” The dinosaurs talk but the humans don’t.

Arlo is the runt of the litter. He has a loving mother and father, and a sister and brother. Arlo is the smallest and the most fearful. They all work on the family farm. One of Arlo’s responsibilities is feeding the chickens, however this fellow is afraid of them. He is afraid of everything. Arlo strives to be like his siblings, yet he is just too fearful. His father has faith that he will get through his fears.

After his father dies, this little guy tries even harder to live up to his dad’s hopes. When he is inadvertently swept away by the river he ends up a long way away from the farm. This is where he joins with a little orphan cave boy named Spot.

Actually, Arlo and Spot have met before and Arlo blames the little boy for his father’s death. But Spot adores his new friend and wants to help Arlo get back home. The two begin the long trek back to Arlo’s farm and his family.

Along the way fearless Spot and fearful Arlo encounter some other characters, both good and bad. But their devotion to each other is what saves them and pulls them through all the hardships.

During their adventure, Arlo learns to get through his fears and does what his father told him to do – something bigger that himself; something for another being. The relationship between Arlo and Spot is what entertains audiences. Young and old will delight in the love these two share for each other. Spot’s expressions are priceless. He’s simply adorable and will steal the hearts of everyone in the theaters.

There are many scenes of peril in the movie, which might be upsetting to some youngsters. And there are some scenes which might not be completely understood by the very young. But all in all, this is a sweet film of love, devotion, and mostly of family and finding one’s place in the world.

The animation in the movie is amazing. Not only are the characters enticing, but the scenery is also top notch. Producer Denise Ream explains, “It’s an interesting balance between having the slight stylization, but also capturing the realism of nature. The details they’ve incorporated are stunning. And we’ve approached it differently—you can see for miles and miles.”

“It’s the biggest effects film we’ve done in Pixar history, by far,” says effects supervisor Jon Reisch. “Typically, about 30 percent of a film’s shots are effects shots. For The Good Dinosaur, it’s more than twice that—60 percent of the film, over 900 shots out of about 1500, featured the work of the effects department.” There is nonstop action from beginning to end.

THE GOOD DINOSAUR

The Good Dinosaur is one of the most emotional movies we’ve ever made,” says executive producer John Lasseter. “It’s really funny and clever, and as the story unfolds, this deep emotion emerges. You fall in love with Spot right along with Arlo. Their bond is so interesting and unique—so different from anything we’ve ever done. It’s a very special movie.”

Before the movie the animated short, Sanjay’s Super Team. Sanjay is a little boy who loves his super heroes. When his father makes him meditate in front of the Hindu gods, the little boy dreams of them as super heroes. This is a colorful little short.

Disney has several products to accompany this new adventure. There is an adorable plush Spot and several plush Arlos as well as other items.

The bottom line is The Good Dinosaur is a special treat for young and old. It is filled with emotions. The Good Dinosaur is rated PG for peril, action, and thematic elements.

Anthony Mackie Covers the Big Screen

Joseph Gordon Levitt;Seth Rogen;Anthony Mackie

It’s not an illusion, actor Anthony Mackie has taken over neighborhood cineplax screens. Currently seen as a campaign strategist and Sandra Bullock’s sidekick in Our Brand is Crises, he returns this Friday in two distinctly different takes on life in New York City.

For starters, Jonathan Levine’s The Night Before ushers in the holiday season with a nontraditional tale of three dudes – Ethan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a musician, whose career has failed to launch; Isaac (Seth Rogan),who is suffering from a case of pending fatherhood jitters, rounded out by Chris (Mackie), a pro football player, whose gridiron fame might be attributed to the use of steroids.

Every year the guys gather to commemorate the tragic, sudden deaths of Ethan’s parents a decade earlier, but it looks like this tradition may quickly be coming to an end. Upping the ante one last time, the buddies nail three tickets to the Nutcrackar Ball, the Big Apple’s legendary and most elusive party. There’s just one small hitch, the invitations don’t include an address.

In pursuit of that location, their drug-fueled night of debauchery and revelry takes detours to the Rockefeller Center tree, a karaoke bar where they take a stab at Run-DMC’s “Christmas in Hollis,” and Tompkins Square Park, complete with a stray reindeer running amok. Nothing is off limits, not even midnight mass.

Don’t be mislead, The Night Before promises and delivers a marathon of laughs, but discreetly tucked between the layers is an unmistakable sweetness and vulnerability. By the time the final credits role, three great friends have morphed into three wise men.

Mackie was so sold on the project he did something he hadn’t done in 10 years – he auditioned for the role. “It was a little weird having to memorize the lines for the audition. And usually, actors tend to stay away from the star. Instead I messed with Seth. I was going to blow it out and make it my own. They’d (the director and casting crew) keep laughing and I’d be thinking, ‘Yo, shut up. The cameras are still rolling and I’m still in the middle of my audition.’ I didn’t know if it went well or not until I got the part,” noted the highly animated 37 year old actor, who in real life is a devote football fan, pledging allegiance to his hometown team – the New Orleans Saints.

His second feature film sharing the same release date is writer/director Paul Bettany’s Shelter. A piercing indictment on society’s ineffective handling of homelessness, the storyline is propelled forward by two unlikely lovers – Tahir (Mackie), a Nigerian immigrant racked with guilt over the atrocities he committed as a member of the Islamic militant group Boko Haram, and Hannah (played by Bettany’s wife Jennifer Connelly), a heroin addict, who’s been reduced to trading sexual favors for refuge in a small boiler room during a blizzard. Despite the dire circumstances, a romance blossoms, secrets are shared, and in the act of forgiveness they each find their redemption.

Totally different in both size and scope from such recent blockbusters like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where he appeared as Sam Wilson/Falcon, and subsequent follow-up Avengers: Age of Ultron, Mackie seemed predestined to play Tahir

The graduate of Juillard’s School of Drama recalled, “A few years back, I was feed up and frustrated with the business. I went to Los Angeles to visit a friend. It was the first time I saw LA’s Skid Row and my reaction was, ‘My God, what is this?’ I saw so many veterans living there. I read up on it and called my reps to say I wanted to do something, maybe a short character study. A few months later the script for Shelter comes across, like it was fate. I just thought it was ironic and funny and made me want to create something.”

Having done so many big budget, special effects, and blue screen movies in the past, Mackie welcomed the challenge of creating an intimate, basically two-character study. He laughingly conceded, “Let’s put it this way there were no craft services to keep me happy when I wanted some cookies. This is like doing theater, you just have to hit the road running. I did a few movies like this, successful movies like my first 20-25 day shoot.”

Specifically, he was referring to Brother to Brother where he played a homeless shelter employee struggling with his cultural and sexual identity. Along with his Independent Spirit Award nomination, the film copped the 2004 Special Dramatic Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival.

Musically inclined, his first big break came while portraying ill-fated rapper Tupac Shakur in the off-Broadway staging of Up Against the Wind. He’d eventually move uptown to the Great White Way in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom headed by Whoopi Goldberg.

Numbered among his movie credits are We Are Marshalls, The Hurt Locker, and Million Dollar Baby, coupled with biopics on Olympian Jesse Owens, Antebellum slave revolt leader Nat Turner, and jazz musician Buddy Bolden. Augmenting that roster is the upcoming HBO movie All the Way, casting Mackie as Martin Luther King Jr. to Bryan Cranston’s turn as Lyndon B. Johnson, which focuses on the passage of the Civil Rights Act.

Already shaping up as another busy year, 2016 will mark the release of Triple 9, about a gang of criminals and corrupt cops, who mastermind the killing of a police officer in order to pull off a major heist. And there’s another foray as Falcon in Captain America: Civil War.

Recently becoming a father for the third time Mackie warns, “It’s going to take something important to take me away from my family.”

‘Zootopia’ trailer

The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when rookie Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia,” a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”), opens in theaters on March 4, 2016.

Ninja Coffee Bar – Product Review

Coffee lovers, take note. If you love all kinds of coffee, the new Ninja Coffee Bar just might be your favorite coffee maker. This is the most versatile little machine for creating all kinds of coffees.

The variety of coffees this unit can create is vast. Yes, it can make a simple cup of coffee. But it does so much more.
ninja2
Users can brew a single cup, a travel cup, a carafe, or a half carafe. Each time the brew is tailored to the select size. There is also a selection to brew over ice. This is a unique button because with the IQ technology, the machine brews the coffee a little stronger so as the ice melts, it won’t dilute the flavor of your java. Patented Auto-iQ technology selects the right amount of water to use for each selection of coffee saturation. That is what makes this unit different from others so you can brew a single cup or a carafe, hot or cold, with the touch of a button.

If you want something more creative than a simple cup of coffee, the “Specialty Brew” button, using the IQ technology, creates more concentrated coffee for a latte, cappuccino, or macchiato.

The Ninja Coffee Bar comes with a milk frother. To utilize this little gadget, simply microwave some milk in the glass tube then insert the frothing mechanism and pump to get the milk frothy for specialty coffees.
ninja3
The recipe book that comes with the machine has plenty of ideas to create specialty coffees to match your every mood. All you need to do is to follow the recipes and in a few minutes you can have a bigger menu of specialty drinks than the local coffee house.

Because you use your own coffee in the unit, you can control what kind of grounds you prefer. Many people love strong, bitter coffee, while others enjoy a light roast or even flavored grounds. It’s your decision.

If you have seen the infomercial you know the Ninja Coffee Bar also makes ice-blended drinks. For an ice-blended drink you need an additional unit to blend the ingredients. Some offers online and on TV include the additional blender, however it is not included in the actual Ninja Coffee Bar box. This is something you need to know when you buy your machine.

ninja
When I received my review unit, I was anxious to try different coffees. I am not a barista, so it took me a few tries to get exactly what I wanted. I also found the coffee was a bit stronger than I wanted, so I do admit there is a little learning curve with this, but not too much.

If you are looking for a gift for a coffee lover, this fits the bill. Or, if you are simply in need of a new coffee maker, why not get this and in time you will probably be creating more than a pot of coffee. The possibilities are limited by your imagination. Whether you want to add caramel, chocolate, Amaretto, etc. you can have almost any kind of coffee drink you can imagine.

There is a choice between the glass carafe and a thermal carafe. Included in the Ninja Coffee Bar box is: the machine, carafe, Ninja Easy Frother, scooper, coffee filter, insulated tumbler and recipe book. The Ninja Coffee Bar Brewer lists for $159.80 for the glass carafe.

‘Nature Cat’ on PBS

NatureCat3
Nature Cat is the newest preschool series in the PBS Kids lineup. This animated series introduces kids to the wonders of the outdoors. The creators, brothers David Adam Rudman, hope after watching Nature Cat and his friends explore their backyard, kids will get off the couch and go into their own yards to “live the show” and explore the wonders of nature while using their own imaginations.

There are plenty of things to do outside. While kids might prefer to stay inside and fiddle with their video games or stay glued to the TV, Nature Cat has, at its core, the intent of getting kids to play outside.

How many kids do you know that sit inside even on glorious days? They are practically glued to their electronic devices. Yes, even little kids. After all, they have grown up and are growing up in a world where everything is at their fingertips. Hey, if they want to know about butterflies, all they have to do is search for the info on a computer, unaware that simply going outside they might get a glimpse of one up close and see how it flies through the air. What a great concept. Seeing and discovering nature in the great outdoors is something that many kids are missing these days.

naturecat

But just because these characters are out of the house, don’t think they can completely ignore the technology of today’s world. On the contrary. Daisy is very smart. “But she also has a smartphone, so she’s [the] character who might be a little tied to technology, but she knows how to use it when she gets out in the world. If she has a question, she will look it up like kids today, and then she’ll put the phone away,” explained Adam Rudman.

“In our show, there will be [special] moments. We call them ‘play the show moments’ where we are hoping kids will watch and they will say, ‘I want to go play that. I want to do exactly what they just did,’ and go outside, and [perhaps] build a birdhouse or plant a butterfly garden or dig for earthworms.”

“Many of today’s children are growing up with less of a connection to nature, so we set out to create a very funny, action-adventure series that will inspire kids to get outside, starting in their own backyards and parks, and explore,” said David Rudman. “Our hope is that our viewers will develop an appreciation and love of nature and will reap the many benefits it has to offer,” added Adam Rudman.

Parents and kids can access more fun with Nature Cat on the website.

Nature Cat premiers November 25, 2015 on PBS.

The Girl Most Likely on DVD

girl
Jane Powell is delightful in this 1958 musical. The Girl Most Likely is a fun romp that takes place in just a couple days in in each of these days Dotie (Powell) manages to get engaged to three different men.

Dotie was born and raised on Balboa Island in California. Every day she takes the ferry to the mainland for work with here best friend Marge (Kaye Ballard). Dotie dreams of marrying a rich man. She wants to experience life away from her small island. She wants to travel by yacht instead of by ferry.

Buzz (Tommy Noonan) has been Dotie’s friend for a long time. When he proposes she is surprised but says “yes.” Buzz, a local realtor, tells her he will work hard and they will make a lot of money. It sounds good to Dotie but she doesn’t feel the special spark she should when someone gets engaged.

Then, the next day while riding the ferry back to Balboa, Dotie sees a man leave the yacht that just docked. He gets in a boat and on a whim she jumps off the ferry and is swims to the little boat, thinking he is the rich tycoon Neil Patterson, Jr. In fact it is Pete (Cliff Robertson), the mechanic. They make a date with Dotie still believing it is Patterson. While on their date she realizes her mistake, but nevertheless she has a great time with Pete. He is an easy-going guy with no pretense and a lot of charm as well as common sense.

Pete and Dotie get along swimmingly, no pun intended, and he proposes. She says “yes.” If you’re keeping score, Dotie has agreed to marry two men in the span of two days.

Then, lo and behold, she meets Neil Patterson, Jr. (Keith Andes). They go on a date on his yacht, ending up in Mexico. With all the fun and extravagance he can offer her, you guessed it, she says “yes” to him when he proposes. The tally is now three men to whom Dotie is engaged.

Which one will she chose? After all, she can’t marry all three. After careful consideration, Dotie makes her decision. But is it the right one for her?

This is a fun little film sprinkled with musical numbers. The film would have been just as delightful without the song and dance scenes. Powell is entertaining and viewers will undoubtedly be rooting for Pete. Robertson plays this character with warmth and sincerity, reminiscent of his role of “Kahuna” the following year in the movie Gidget.

The Girl Most Likely is not rated. It is part of the Warner Archive Collection and can be ordered through their website.
