The Affair Season 2 Airs on Showtime

Episode 203
I don’t know about you, but I crave for serious human dramas, especially shows that deal with marriages and relationships. In this day and age of Super Heroes and apocalyptic disaster shows, they are few and far between.

For those of you who are willing to invest some of your precious time exploring ripple effects of an affair, I’d highly recommend Showtime’s The Affair. Don’t be fooled by the title. It’s a fascinating study of emotional and psychological effects of an affair that shatters two marriages along with a smartly parsed out murder mystery.

Noah Solloway (Dominic West) and Alison Lockhart (Ruth Wilson) met, kissed, and cheated their spouses who eventually found out about the affair.

Hagai Levi (In Treatment) and Sarah Treem (In Treament, House Of Cards) were interested in Rashomon style storytelling and Treem is fascinated by how men and women see and experience the same situation differently. That’s why the entirety Season 1 was told from Noah and Alison’s POVs. It worked beautifully due to her stringent efforts in writing the show without judging either character.

The anticipated Season 2 premieres on October 4 and it will depict the aftermath of the affair. However, Treem added two more vastly different perspectives in the mix. We will get to know Helen Solloway (Maura Tierney) and Cole Lockhart (Joshua Jackson), who were left behind to pick up the pieces. Some of the timelines are a bit confusing, but we really see the true colors of the star-crossed quartet when life happens.

The Affair Season Two premiers October 4, 2015 on Showtime.

Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown on DVD

bonvoyage
Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown
is the fourth film in the Peanuts feature film franchise. This 1980 film stars Charlie Brown, Linus, Peppermint Patty, and Marcie as they travel to Europe to represent their schools in a student exchange program. Of course, Snoopy tags along with his buddy Woodstock to help the kids maneuver through the streets of England and France.

Their plane trip to England is hysterical as Snoopy and Woodstock get first class treatment leaving the four kids to experience coach travel. Upon their arrival in London, they decide to tour the city before leaving for their destination in France. Snoopy is well prepared, having packed his tennis togs and racket to take in some court time at Wimbledon. While he’s swinging his racket, the kids are trying to understand their British waiter to order their lunch.

Then the group heads over to France via a hovercraft and once on French soil they rent a car, with Snoopy as the designated driver. Thank goodness Marcie knows how to speak French. She is able to help them as well as translate a letter Charlie Brown received before they left home. The letter is an invitation for him to stay at a local chateau, so after dropping off Marcie and Peppermint Patty with their host family, Charlie Brown, Linus, and Snoopy head to the chateau.

When they get there the boys discover no one is home and there are no preparations for them. So they make the best of things and sleep in the stable area. In the morning a breakfast has been magically assembled for them. But who brought it and why all the mystery?

The mystery of the chateau is foremost in the plot. But the fun comes via the kids and Snoopy. These guys are always good for a laugh. Peppermint Patty is convinced Pierre, the little boy hosting the two girls, is enchanted with her. The truth is, Pierre is really attracted to Marcie but Peppermint Patty’s ego doesn’t see that. All she sees is that she is the object of his affections. Typical Peppermint Patty.

This is a fun film and because it encompasses three countries, the settings and encounters in which the kids find themselves are often laugh-out-loud funny. These little kids have stolen the hearts of viewers for decades and they continue to do so in this movie.

A “making of” bonus featurette explains how the story came to be. Charles Schultz, the creator of the comic strip, had spent time in France during the war and as viewers see, the cafe in which Snoopy spends much of his time was created to represent the one Schultz visited while in France. Plus, the chateau where Linus and Charlie Brown sleep represents the chateau from Schultz’s history during the war.

The filmmakers did not have modern technology at the time they created this movie so they relied on hand made drawings, which for a feature length animated film was daunting because keeping viewers interested in an animated movie was tricky. But they managed beautifully and with the help of the beloved Peanuts characters, this film remains a beloved story.

Bon Voyage Charlie Brown, And Don’t Come Back! is rated G for all audiences.

Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (And Don’t Come Back!!) DVD and Plush GIVEAWAY

Peanuts Giveaway[1]

Grab your passport and pack your bags because the Peanuts gang is going on their first international jaunt in BON VOYAGE, CHARLIE BROWN (AND DON’T COME BACK!!), from Paramount Home Media Distribution. Released theatrically in 1980, and celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, this charming movie was the fourth feature-length film made with Charles Schulz’s beloved Peanuts characters and was a product of the long-time collaboration between Schulz, animation director Bill Melendez and producer Lee Mendelson. Together, these three helped create all of the Peanuts animated television specials and feature films, starting with A Charlie Brown Christmas in 1969.

In BON VOYAGE, CHARLIE BROWN (AND DON’T COME BACK!!) Charlie Brown, Linus, Peppermint Patty and Marcie are chosen as – you guessed it! – exchange students, destined to spend two weeks in France. Of course, Snoopy and Woodstock join the French odyssey, which turns out to be a combination of mystery, intrigue, and romance coupled with the usual misadventures that seem to follow Charlie Brown wherever he goes!

The BON VOYAGE, CHARLIE BROWN (AND DON’T COME BACK!!) DVD includes the classic film digitally remastered in 4K, along with a brand new featurette that gives fans insight into the creative process of animating the beloved comic strip, how the feature film came to be and what it took to bring the movie to the big screen. The featurette includes new interviews with Charles Schulz’s widow, Jean, at the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, California, producer Lee Mendelson and Steve Melendez, son of Bill Melendez and president of Bill Melendez Productions.

We have some DVDs (with plush characters) to giveaway.

To be eligible to win a copy of Bon Voyage Charlie Brown, email us at [email protected] with “Bon Voyage Giveaway” in the title. Please supply your name, address, phone number and email address (so we can let you know if you are a winner).

Home Fires on PBS

Jambusters - Specials
Masterpiece on PBS has given us many memorable series through the years. Most recently is Downton Abbey. The upcoming season of that memorable show is the final for Downton, however there is no need to think nothing will be as compelling and addicting again. On the contrary, Home Fires is an engaging new drama about to air on PBS.

Home Fires takes place in a small English village at the time the country is preparing for World War II. The Women’s Institute is the focal point for many of the woman in the village. It’s where they gather and help the community with various projects. Currently they are planning for the eventual war and deciding what the women of the town can do for their village and their country.

Bitter rivals erupt among the women in the group. However the most gripping stories are behind closed doors. Some of the women have emotional and tragic stories that have been hidden from the town, and some are dealing with potential scandal. And the newest resident to the village hides her own secret past that could destroy her future.

While one woman is being abused by her husband, another is hiding the facts of her late husband. Another is dealing with an absentee husband and another is facing her husband’s deadly illness. There are wealthy women and poor ones. There are those that work outside of the home and those that are “housewives.” But the camaraderie between them sees them through the bad times and strengthens them during the good times.

All of this plays out with the threat of war on the horizon. And when war does come, the women and the town must band together. While war is spreading around the world, the people grow stronger together. Their personal stories are compelling and their friendship is heartening. This is indeed a “must see” for anyone who enjoys great British drama.

On a personal note: I was able to view the entire season (in one day) and was thoroughly engaged in this drama. Home Fires is addicting.

Home Fires premiers Sunday, October 4, 2015 on PBS.

Dear Sofia: A Royal Collection on DVD

DearSofiaARoyalDollectionDVD1Sofia the First is a popular series on Disney Junior. Sofia is beloved by girls of all ages and holds a special appeal to young girls. When she needs help and guidance, other Disney princesses often visit Sofia. “Dear Sofia: A Royal Collection” is a compilation of six episodes from the series, four of which feature other Disney princesses.

In “The Amulet and the Anthem” Sofia gets a little too pompous when she is selected to sing the anthem at the Harvest Festival. Her magic amulet unleashes a curse because she was not nice to her friends making Sofia unable to sing because she croaks like a frog. Princess Belle arrives to impart some advice. Sofia learns saying “I’m sorry” isn’t enough. As Belle says, “Actions speak louder than words.” She tells Sofia, “Use all your might to make it right.” Sofia does make amends with her friends and the curse is broken.

Mulan comes to assist Sofia in “Princesses to the Rescue.” When Sofia, James, Amber, and King Roland travel to the Jade Valley to visit June, Jin, and their father. Jin and James discover a treasure map and go in search of the jewels, unaware that the Jade Jaguar guards the treasure. And he’s not a statue. He’s real. And he doesn’t want people coming into his cave of treasures. Soon their fathers go after the boys and are trapped in the cave along with James and Jin. Sofia, Amber, and June then go to help rescue the others. Mulan’s words of encouragement to not give up and that they are stronger than they think are just what the girls need to rescue the boys and their fathers.

“Winter’s Gift” introduces Winter, a faun who has the power of ice. It’s Wassailia time and for the past year Winter has been alone because everything she touches turns to ice, like Princess Elsa. But she cannot control it. Now she must find a gift to take to the witch to get her power lifted. Sofia is on a quest to gather Ice Lillies to give to Cedric after she decides her homemade box for his magic wand is not special enough. With the guidance of Princess Tiana, they all learn that a gift should come from the heart.

“Two to Tangu” has the gang from Royal Prep visiting the kingdom of Tangu and their friend Zandar who gives them magic carpets to ride to his special party. Amber is not happy about riding a carpet. After all, she doesn’t want to get her hair messed up. Actually, she is afraid of riding on a carpet. Amber agrees to go and she and Sofia get a wild carpet. This little fellow doesn’t listen to directions and they wind up lost in the kingdom until Jasmine arrives to teach them how to tame a wild carpet. Her lesson to them is not to be afraid to try new things.

The fifth episode in this collection is “Minimus is Missing.” No princesses come to help in this episode, however. It is Amber who manages to help when all the flying horses fall under a spell of a young wizard named Wendell. With no flying horses, Sofia, James, and Amber take off on the three Griffins from the castle’s jewel room. They follow the horses to Tangu where they have all been detained.

There is a bonus episode on this disc. “Cool Hand Fluke” has the family once again in Merroway Cove where the underwater kingdom welcomes them back. Sofia magically transforms into a mermaid again and the merpeople are happy to see her. They decide to present the royal family with a song but Fluke is jealous of Sofia for saving them the last time she was there and manages to make a mess of things. In the end they all learn that jealousy is not a worthwhile emotion.

Episodes in Sofia the First are filled with delightful songs and in each episode a valuable lesson is taught, although viewers won’t know they are learning. All young viewers will know is that they are enjoying a fun story with the little Disney princess.

Included in this DVD is a Sofia pen and a card on which to send the little princess a personal message. The envelope is pre-addressed to Sofia. No, it doesn’t go to Enchancia. It goes to New York. But I’m sure the folks in the big apple will forward the messages to Princess Sofia.

Dyson V6 Absolute Cordless Vacuum

Just when you thought Dyson couldn’t improve on their cordless vacuum, they invented the new V6 Absolute. This is definitely an improvement in their line of cordless vacuums that perform above and beyond the expectations of users.

The V6 Absolute is more powerful than their last vacuum and can run up to 20 minutes on a charge of the Li-ion battery. A Max mode allows users a little increase in the power when there is a more challenging task, however it isn’t necessary to use this mode most of the time as the suction is already powerful. When depressing the Max power mode button the battery will use a little more power.

The HEPA filter is important for allergy sufferers because it captures 99.97% of particles and holds them so as not to release them back into the air when air leaves the machine. If you suffer from allergies, sinus problems or asthma or simply want cleaner air, this filter will help. HEPA stands for “High-efficiency particulate air” and is the required by the government to remove 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. This filtration is a plus for anyone with medical issues, small children, or pets.

With the two different heads that come with the vacuum, the V6 Absolute is the only cordless you will need for both carpets and hard floors. The soft roller cleaning head as well as the direct-drive cleaning head are both included with this model. The actually direct-drive motor forces the brushes deeper into the carpet to capture more debris and dust.

The V6 Absolute includes several tools including a crevice tool to clean in corners and baseboards as well as combination tools for a variety of cleaning. The mini soft dusting brush is the optimum size for getting into keyboards or other areas without scratching the surface.

My favorite part of the Dyson cordless vacuums remains the same on the Absolute. As with the other Dyson cordless vacuums, the Absolute is lightweight and easy to use both when vacuuming the floor or reaching in higher places. Getting those cobwebs on the ceiling is a breeze as well as cleaning the tops of blinds or shutters. Cleaning the dust out of screens is easy with the Dyson because of the way it is weighted. While it won’t wash your windows, at least the screens will be clean and dust free. When was the last time you cleaned your screens? They are year-round dust and pollen collectors.

The convenient docking station also is easy to use. Simply attach it to the wall and plug in the vacuum. And emptying the vacuum is simple with just a push of a button. The vacuum itself is red and gray, giving it a sleek, modern look.

As with the other Dyson cordless vacuums, the Absolute is easy to convert from a floor-to-ceiling cleaner to a short handheld machine to use in cars or on furniture. v6handheld

The Dyson V6 Absolute comes with a 2-year warranty.

If you are looking for a small, lightweight, cordless vacuum with super power to clean both carpets and hard floors, a HEPA filter for better breathing, plenty of tools to clean the entire house – or apartment – and easily converts from a floor cleaner to a handheld, then the V6 Absolute is worth the investment. With Dyson technology and all the bells and whistles, plus the additional benefit of the HEPA filter, this is the one cordless vacuum that does it all.

He’s a Bully, Charlie Brown on DVD

Hes a Bully Charlie Brown_2D-2The Peanuts gang is back for another fun episode. Actually three stories are included in this new DVD: “He’s a Bully, Charlie Brown,” “It’s a Short Summer, Charlie Brown,” and an episode from “The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show.”

Good grief! Everyone is going to summer camp except Peppermint Patty who must stay home to attend summer school. Even little Rerun is going. Lucy and Linus’ younger brother is anxious to learn to play marbles and be a champ like his grandfather. But the little kid gets suckered into losing all of his marbles to the camp’s bully. It’s then when good old Charlie Brown steps in and with the help of Snoopy, learns to play marbles and wins all of little Rerun’s marbles back. Yes, Charlie Brown is the hero in this story.

“It’s a Short Summer, Charlie Brown” also takes place in summer camp. It’s the boys against the girls in swimming and softball and all kinds of competitions. Lucy and Peppermint Patty have made the girls into a real team, while the boys are pretty much not working together. But when they decide to challenge the girls to a wrist-wrestling contest, it is Snoopy who, disguised as “The Masked Marvel,” is up against Lucy to see who is the champ.

The final episode in this collection has a bit of everything. Little Rerun has plenty of adventures on the back of his mom’s bicycle. What will Linus do when his blanket is lost? And there are more fun antics with the gang as they continue to entertain viewers as only they can do.

Mary Ellen Thomas, Vice President Family & Animation Marketing at Warner Bros. said, “We’re delighted to release this inspiring collection. If you love Peanuts, this is one title you won’t want to miss.”

Whether you love Charlie Brown, Linus, Schroeder (who manages to take his piano to camp), Lucy, Rerun, Peppermint Patty, Marci, Snoopy, Patty, Franklin, Pigpen, or Sally, you’ll find they all have fun in this collection of Peanuts stories that is meant for the entire family.
