‘Til The Morning: Lullabies and Songs of Comfort CD GIVEAWAY

tilthemorning completedAward-winning singer/songwriters, friends, and fellow travelers on the path of motherhood – Edie Carey of Chicago and Sarah Sample of Salt Lake City – weave their distinctive and yet perfectly blended voices to create an intimate, harmony-laden collection, ‘Til The Morning: Lullabies and Songs of Comfort.

‘Til The Morning: Lullabies and Songs of Comfort opens with a cover of the Dixie Chicks’ “Lullaby,” which sets lyrics of maternal love and devotion in a texture of cascading vocal and instrumental lines and features guest performer Mai Bloomfield (of Raining Jane and Jason Mraz) contributing the golden sound of her cello and ethereal harmonies. An exquisite treatment of Wilco’s “California Stars” follows, bringing out the elegance of its mesmerizing harmonic progression. Other highlights include the beloved perennial, “Turn Around,” “Slumber My Darling” (where listeners are treated to a hauntingly beautiful combination of vocal harmonies floating over the rich sound of a string trio), Paul Jacobsen’s tender “I’m On Your Side,” the familiar hymn “Softly and Tenderly” (with lyrics modified to reference “Mama” and “children”), Townes Van Zandt’s treasured song “If I Needed You,” the folk classic, “All The Pretty Little Horses,” and “La La Lu,” the famous lullaby sung by Peggy Lee in Walt Disney’s Lady and the Tramp.

The Big Chill Blu-ray/DVD with Lots of Extras

bigchillThe latest release of the classic 1983 ensemble film, The Big Chill, contains both a Blu-ray version and a DVD version along with plenty of amazing additional features. The story is about seven college friends who gather together after the suicide of one of their friends, and, throughout a reunion weekend they relive some of the good times of their past and discover the changes they have undergone since leaving the cocoon of college life.

Kevin Kline, Glenn Close, Tom Berenger, Jeff Goldblum, Mary Kay Place, JoBeth Williams, and William Hurt play the old college chums, and Meg Tilly is the girlfriend of their deceased friend. Throughout one weekend the gang is together again, and they share their thoughts, lives, insecurities, disappointments, and secrets. The once gung-ho know-it-all college kids have grown up and have responsibilities and different values than they did when they were in college in Michigan. They have entered the real world, but even though they have changed, they remain true and loyal friends. Yes, they have arguments. Yes, some of their old romantic feelings are still there. Yes, they have a shared history. And yes, they are now and will always remain friends.

The soundtrack is a character in itself. The songs were carefully chosen to go with the film. This is a true blast from the past.

If you were alive during the late mid 1960s, you know this film as part of your pop culture. If you are too young, this film is a great ensemble movie that looks at the emotions of life and the maturity of people and ideas as they journey through the maze of life.

Bonus features on this edition are amazing. First, there is a new feature from 2014 with writer/director Lawrence Kasdan. Kasdan discusses his experience with the story, what led him to create the movie, and how his career has endured. He has had plenty of success “in the system” of Hollywood. His greatest desire was to be able to direct his own movies, and he has achieved that. With major success!

When discussing the movie, Kasdan describes it as an ensemble where old animosities return yet love and friendship are endless. He has always been attracted to ensemble films. He enjoys telling several people’s stories together in one piece.

Another bonus feature on this edition is a 1998 reunion documentary with some of the cast as well as Kasdan. In this documentary the soundtrack is discussed as well as the location, which was South Carolina and a brief scene in Atlanta. During the making of the film, the cast was basically isolated from the rest of the world. To form the strong bond they share onscreen, they spent their spare time together, playing music and Trivial Pursuit. Take note of the stories they have about the house in which the majority of the film takes place. It’s haunted. Yep, you read correctly. Listen to their stories. Boo!

There is also a 2013 Q&A feature from the Toronto International Film Festival where the movie was screened for its 30th anniversary.
Rounding out the bonuses are several deleted scenes.

This edition of The Big Chill has everything Chill-lovers could ask for.

The Big Chill is rated R.

Magic in the Moonlight Movie Review

_DSF0091.RAF

Colin Firth stars in Woody Allen’s newest film, Magic in the Moonlight. This dialogue-driven movie is a delightful romantic comedy.

Firth plays Stanley, a world-renowned magician who comes to the Riviera with his friend, Howard Burkan (Simon McBurney), to debunk a woman who claims to be a psychic medium. Sophie Baker (Emma Stone) has convinced everyone she can see the future, knows private details about everyone’s past, and can contact the departed. Stanley has proven countless psychics to be frauds and he intends to do the same with Sophie.

But slowly by slowly Stanley is convinced Sophie is the real thing. This goes against everything he believes in. Stanley believes what you see is what you get and life is life – there is nothing more. But, as one character says, why would God go to so much trouble if everything comes to nothing?

Sophie comes from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Her father left when she was young. Now she makes money off her “gift.” She is staying with her mother at an opulent villa and being pursued by a rich bachelor. According to Stanley, she is conning everyone to gain admittance into this lush and lavish lifestyle. And she is doing it quite well.

In a way, this is the opposite of Henry Higgins who convinced everyone that simple Eliza Doolittle was a proper lady and admired by all, after he taught her everything. Stanly must convince everyone that Sophie, an admired young woman, is an out-and out fake. How can he debunk her when he cannot figure out how she is doing what she is doing? She knows about his past, about his aunt’s past, about his uncle, about everything. How could this be if she were not a genuine psychic?

Colin Firth is adorable as the baffled magician with an ego the size of Mount Rushmore. His kinder, gentler side is revealed the more time he spends with Sophie and the endearing love story that unfolds is sweet.
Eileen Atkins plays Stanley’s Aunt Vanessa, Marcia Gay Harden plays Sophie’s mother, Hamish Linklater plays Sophie’s suitor Brice, and Jackie Weaver plays Brice’s mother who is desperate to contact her departed husband.

Magic in the Moonlight has a wonderful score, with plenty of songs from the 1920s. It’s rated PG-13 for a brief suggestive comment, and smoking throughout.

Daniel Tiger is a Big Brother

Daniel_Baby_MargaretThe Tiger family is growing this season. Daniel is learning how to be a big helper and…a big brother.

When Daniel learns he is going to be a big brother, he has many emotions. He’s happy, excited, a little jealous, and concerned. The episodes deal with everything going on in Daniel’s life and his new role as big brother.

Waiting for the new baby is a time of fun, as Daniel helps his mom and dad put the crib together, paint the baby’s room, and prepare for the arrival of the baby. In the beginning, Daniel finds sharing his old baby things a bit troubling, and then he understands he cannot use them any more, so he decides to happily share them with the baby. But is the baby going to be a boy or a girl? Everyone has to wait for the arrival to find out.

When baby Margaret joins the Tiger family and the neighborhood, excitement grows. Daniel is a good big brother, and learns patience when dealing with the baby.

For any family dealing with growth, this is a good way to introduce the arrival of a new baby via Daniel. He may be a tiger, but he is also a little guy and his emotions are no different than those of human children. Through Daniel kids learn what to expect and how to handle the arrival of a new addition to the family. Having another child in the house is a new experience.

The season premiers with a one-hour special on August 18, 2014. It’s then when Daniel learns he is going to be a big brother, and then during the second part of the special, Daniel – and everyone – meets baby Margaret. The next day, August 19, Daniel learns to adjust to having another child in the house, and on Wednesday, August 20, Margaret adds some variety to the family, which can be fun.

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is based on the characters from Fred Rogers. It is not only an educational show, but also entertaining as the characters and songs are fun for kids to watch and listen to. Daniel is an adorable character that is happy, friendly, and very helpful, especially when learning how to be a big brother.

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood airs on PBS Kids. Look for the second season premier week with the arrival of baby Margaret August 18, 2014.
