Bring home ‘Coco’ in stunning 4K

If you have been considering getting a 4K player and TV, now is the time. Disney/Pixar Coco is absolutely stunning on 4K. The story of young Miguel and his family comes to life on Ultra HD.

Miguel is a sweet little boy living with his extended family in a small town in Mexico. The family and the community are enriched with their culture and values, which include paying respect to your elders. Miguel desperately wants to be a musician, but his family has prohibited any music in their home. Miguels great-grandfather was a musician and abandoned his great-grandmother and their daughter for a life of music. From then on music has been banned for everyone in his family. The bitterness of the past never wans.

The story unfolds during the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead. This is the one time of year when departed family can cross back into the land of the living and visit their relatives. Due to a strange set of circumstances, Miguel finds himself in the Land of the Dead, but he is not dead – at least not yet.

It takes all his energy, cunning, and spirit (no pun intended) to take on the challenges he faces in order to return to his family. While in the Land of the Dead, the young boy encounters all his departed relatives, who want to help him return to his family. But they insist he never plays music again. This is unconscionable for the boy. So he vows to find another way home.

Miguel meets Hector who befriends him with ulterior motives. While on this extraordinary journey, Miguels family history is uncovered with surprises for all.

Included in the box is an entire disc of bonus features looking at the research the filmmakers did in order to portray the Mexican culture with respect. The film is described as a love letter to Mexico. The research trips to Mexico helped the animators and storywriters depict the accuracy of the holiday and the family dynamics that exist in small Mexican towns. The holiday is a celebration of the memories of the people you loved and viewers are treated to the sights and culture of Mexico from the perspective of the filmmakers.

Another bonus looks at the wonderful music that plays a large part in the story. An interesting bonus shows how the fictional guitar from the film was created as a real instrument.

The colorful flags in the film and throughout the towns in the country are called Papal Picados, and viewers learn how to create their own to hang in and around their own home. There are deleted scenes, segments with the people behind the film, and a look at the fashion and how the animators researched the attire through the ages. After all, when Miguel travels to the Land of the Dead there are many generations of people there, and they are each depicted to represent their own time on earth. And finally, young Anthony Gonzales was hired to supply the temporary voice of Miguel when the movie was being created. An adorable bonus looks at the surprise he got when he was told he was hired to be the real voice of this new Disney/Pixar character.

I had the opportunity to watch Coco on Blu-ray. I thought it was a wonderful movie. But then the 4K disc arrived and while I couldnt see how it could be any better, it was. The 4K is sharper and the colors are more vivid, which is remarkable in this very colorful film. The petals on the flowers and all the imagery are clearer than on the Blu-ray, although the Blu-ray is still wonderful. There is a definite difference in the visual aspect of the film, however. Watching the 4K film, it was like stepping into the screen and becoming part of the film. This is a gorgeous animated film for the whole family.

With over two hours of bonus features, Coco is a light-hearted and enjoyable movie. The 4K set includes a 4K disc, a Blu-ray disc, a Digital code, and a Blu-ray bonus disc. Even if you dont have a 4K setup at home, definitely get the Blu-ray set (which comes with a DVD, Digital, and bonus disc), however, if you are thinking about a 4K setup, then by all means, get the 4K set.

The Art of Coco

And to gain more insight into the movie and the scenes, The Art of Coco is a colorful book that will be enjoyed by all ages. The pages show the drawings and story of the film. The images throughout the book add greatly to this newest mega-hit.

John Lasseter wrote the forward to this coffee-table book. He acknowledged, A story rooted in Mexican tradition, Coco with its themes of music, family, and the power of remembrance, was made to resonate with the world. The book shows the creativity of the filmmakers and the beauty of the story and movie through the 160 pages that put Coco in your hands. As producer Darla K. Anderson writes, “Even though Coco is a film that has a male protagonist and several male main characters, in a lot of ways, there’s a strong matriarchal balance.” This is a story that is beloved by boys, girls, men, women, old, young, and everyone in between.

Flipping through the pages the story of Miguel is depicted from cover to cover and all the colorful images are right there in front of the reader. This makes a great companion to the movie.

Changes to California Adventure in 2018

Hang onto your hats all you Pixar fans. Pixar Pier is opening in June 2018 at Disney California Adventure in Disneyland Resort. New Pixar-themed attractions will replace many of the longtime attractions, however there will still be several things that will remain, notably Mickey Mouse on the Ferris wheel.

Pixar Pier will be divided into four neighborhoods: The Incredibles, Inside Out, Toy Story, and a fourth that will include plenty of characters from the other Disney-Pixar films.

With character/movie-inspired rides, merchandise, and food, guests to this area of the park will be immersed in all things Pixar. The Incredicoaster, formally California Screamin’, will feature sights and sounds from The Incredibles. It still promises to be as electrifying as California Screamin’ but with the Pixar flavor. The Inside Out neighborhood will include the characters from that film and a new attraction. The Toy Story neighborhood will keep Toy Story Mania! and build on that in this district for all the Buzz and Woody fans. The Midway games will also be transformed to include the characters from the Pixar films.

The remainder of the pier area will be renamed Paradise Park, which will keep the current attractions: Silly Symphony Swings, Jumpin’ Jellyfist, Goofy’s Sky School, Golden Zephyr, and Ariel’s Undersea Adventure.

“Paint the Night” parade returns with some new elements. Elastigirl, Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack will be there to entertain guests in this parade featuring pop-art effects and LED lights.

For everything there is a season and a time, so it’s now time to say goodbye to Paradise Pier and hello to Pixar Pier. Mark your calendar for June 23, 2018 when Pixar Pier opens at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim.

2018 is the Year of the Dog. Disney California Adventure’s celebration highlights Pluto and Goofy. But what about the other great Disney Dogs?

Nana is the loving Nanny to the three Darling children in Peter Pan. Lady and Tramp, along with their adventurous son Scamp should also be part of the celebration. Prince Eric’s faithful and fluffy dog Max (The Little Mermaid), Mulan’s buddy Little Brother, Toy Story’s Buster and Slinky Dog, Bolt, Dug (Up), Toby (The Great Mouse Detective), and the newest Disney dog Dante (Coco) should all be part of the celebration honoring canines.

And why not celebrate with all the buddies? RoseBud, Buddha, Mudbud, Budderball, and B-Dawg are all worthy of honor in the Lunar New Year festivities.

Although not technically a “dog” Stitch might also fit the bill, as well as Sparky (Frankenweenie), Zero (The Nightmare Before Christmas), and Footstool (Beauty and the Beast) could be part of the celebration.

With The Year of the Dog underway, it might be a good time to look ahead at future years.

Year of the Ox – Babe the blue ox (Paul Bunyon)

‘Minnie Helping Hearts’ on DVD

From the hit Disney Junior series Mickey and the Roadster Racers, Minnie, Daisy, and Cuckoo-Loca are the “Happy Helpers.” This newest DVD includes eight episodes featuring the Happy Helpers who are always willing to take on a new challenge.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the Happy Helpers are called on to be the cruise directors for a Valentine’s Day cruise. They prove they are up for the job and put on a great dancing contest. They have a knack for pairing up dancing partners, and manage to coax a shy dancer into competing in the contest.

And speaking of shyness, when the girls are asked to look after the children when the daycare is closed for the day, they meet an adorable new goat in town. Buddy is super shy and not ready to take part in all the activities. But thanks to Minnie, he soon becomes a popular kid (no pun intended) and everyone has a great time when the Happy Helpers take over day care duties.

Uh oh, Billy Beagle is the race announcer for the big Mud Bowl Race, but decides at the last minute to enter himself. He has always wanted to win a race and let’s face it, he can’t win unless he races. And he cannot race while announcing. So the Happy Helpers jump into their announcing outfits courtesy of the TurnStyler, and off they go to announce the race while the contestants drive through the mud in Hot Dogs Hills, and thanks to some craziness on the girls’ part, through the town as well. But they get back on track and manage to continue through the mud. With Mickey in the lead, Billy Beagle gets some encouragement from Minnie and Daisy, and he summons up the drive (again, no pun intended) to step on the gas and win the race.

In another episode, the helpers again jump in to aid Billy Beagle when he needs help with Grandpa Beagle. In “Lights! Camera! Help!” the girls become assistants to a movie star who has a big problem. She cannot sing in public but can in the shower. So it’s up to the happy helpers to get her sing when she is supposed to. “Artful Helpers” has the girls hired to keep the museum’s art safe but they find more problems than they thought.

The Happy Helpers are always ready and eager to help out. And with their TurnStyler, they are always dressed for the occasion. Too bad we all don’t have one of these handy little gadgets!

The episodes on this DVD are:

• The Happiest Helpers Cruise!
• The Big Broadcast
• Adventures in Buddysitting!
• Lights! Camera! Help!
• Grandpa Beagle’s Day Out
• Artful Helpers
• Cuckoo La-La
• Figaro’s New Friend

Minnie Helping Hearts is rated TV-Y for everyone.

‘Red Dog: True Blue’ on DVD

Red Dog: True Blue is a touching tale of a boy and his dog. It’s the story of love, loyalty, and friendship.

The story is told by adult Mick (Jason Isaacs) to his young son who desperately wants to get a dog. Mick has been procrastinating but once he finally comes to terms with his past, he is able to feel his son’s desire for a companion.

After his father dies, his mother has a breakdown so eleven-year-old Mick (Levi Miller) is sent to his grandfather’s (Bryan Brown) cattle station in Western Australia. This place is so remote, only helicopters and planes access it on a regular basis. Mick is lonely until he comes across a puppy alone and shivering. The dog is covered with blue dust, so he names the dog Blue. Once he washes it, he sees the dog’s true color is red, but that doesn’t change his name. He is Blue, and Blue and Mick soon become inseparable.

Blue looks out for Mick and vice versa. For the first time in a long time, Mick is happy and the two buddies grow together over the next year.

Out on the cattle station there isn’t much to do, so Mick and Blue explore the vast area of Australia. They come upon a cave and when he is told about the myth that surrounds it, he is interested in the power involved with this strange myth. Will he heed the warning not to disturb that somewhat sacred place or will he and Blue decide to tempt the legend and disturb the history of the cave?

The landscape of Western Australia is front and center in this endearing story of friendship. It highlights the loneliness of the region and enforces the viewers’ empathy for this young boy who has nowhere else to go. While some of the words are a bit strange to American viewers (Australian tribes, regions, etc.), the story is heartfelt and anyone who has ever had a canine companion will sympathize with the relationship between Mick and Blue.

Spoiler Alert: the dog does not die in the film so you don’t have to worry about showing this to kids (or adults) who get upset when the animal dies.

Bonus features include a look at the vast landscape where the film was made. There is another short featurette about KoKo, the dog who played Blue. In reality, he is not red and has become a beloved Australian canine actor. Deleted scenes and an alternate ending are also included. The alternate ending is interesting, however the one that ultimately made it into the film is more satisfying.

Red Dog: True Blue is not rated however it is suitable for all ages.
