Thoughtful gifts for breast cancer awareness month

October is breast cancer awareness month. As a BC survivor, I know how a token of thought can brighten up someone’s day and make the experience more bearable. Here are a few ideas that are thoughtful gifts you might want to consider when thinking about someone who has gone through BC, was recently diagnosed, is going through chemo, or just as a way to show you care. I believe most of us know someone who has gone through breast cancer.

When I was a little girl my grandmother had me memorize a poem. “My favorite color is pink, pink, pink, and I always write letters with pink, pink, ink…” Well, pink is not my actual favorite color, however pink is the color of breast cancer awareness and although wearing a pink ribbon shows compassion and hope for the cure, the following items are more useful and thoughtful for that special person who has been effected by the menace of breast cancer.

The Spa Dress is a great little item. It’s easy to put on and can be used in a variety of ways. It’s a comfortable dress in which to lounge around the house. It’s also great by the pool or a spa. You don’t have to wear those bulky robes. Simply put on a Spa Dress and you’ll look like a million bucks. Also, when going to chemo, this is a comfy and casual dress and in the pink it shows your support for breast cancer awareness and a hope for the cure.

When going through the process of dealing with breast cancer, women still want to look their best. Trophy Skin has a wonderful unit – the MiniMD Microdermabrasion device is a thoughtful gift for anyone. In rose gold and white, the MiniMD is easy to use and in just a few minutes removes the top layer of skin on the face, revealing a brighter complexion. And it also works to remove black heads and imperfections that lay right under the top layer of skin. So, with the MiniMD, looking good is easy.

Let’s get a little whimsical now. Nothing says fun and whimsy like Disney. There are some items perfect for October breast cancer gifts. How about a lovely pink jersey from Disneyland? It’ll brighten up even the gloomiest days. And pink Mickey Mouse earrings are just the things to wear when you’re feeling blue, no pun intended. The princess pink tumbler is a fun item to take to chemo or anywhere. And, let’s face it, going for a procedure is no fun. Make it an amusing experience with a pink sequined Minnie Mouse headband. Anything to brighten up a day for a survivor or someone going through the experience is a thoughtful way to express your feelings.

And finally, Halo has the ultimate ways to be thoughtful while at the same time showing support for BC awareness. These items are some of the most useful products anyone can receive. The Halo Bolt ACDC portable Charger and Car Jumper is the ultimate thoughtful gift. This handy device provides backup power when the lights go out during those winter storms. It is also a car jumper so when you have a dead battery you don’t have to call the auto club or wait for a second car to jump your battery. With all the cables included, all you have to do is to follow the easy directions to jump your own car battery. Talk about being thoughtful. This way women can feel safe when their car won’t start. No stranger is necessary. How thoughtful is this for a gift? And in the rose gold or the pink floral it shows your appreciation for BC awareness.

All of the Halo products are useful and thoughtful, so they make great gifts all year round, but these other pink items are especially thoughtful for October breast cancer awareness month:

The Shine 3000 Portable Chargers are perfect for pockets and purses. And who doesn’t ever run out of power in their cell phone or tablet? We all need more power. And the Shine 3000 with rose gold fashion cable makes quite an exquisite statement. It also includes a built-in flashlight. How cool is that? The HALO lipstick portable chargers provide users with back up power without anyone knowing it. They look like a lipstick and the rose gold accent color is a fun way to incorporate pink into the unit.

The blush colored Halo 8000 Wireless Portable charger has two USB ports so charging a phone and a tablet or two phones at the same time is possible. This comes with a USB to micro cord as well. And the HALO Pocket Power 6000 also charges a phone and tablet, and in the pink snakeskin it looks quite chic.

To brighten up any room, the bright pink HALO Square 52000 cell phone and tablet charger fits the bill. It’s stylish and functional. And speaking of stylish and functional, the rose gold HALO Sleek 3500 fits easily into a purse. The stunning pink lattice design on the HALO Powerpatch Portable Charger includes a USB to micro cable and a USB to Lightning cable.

The HALO Power Cube has a built in wall and car charger. Simply plug it into a wall outlet or your car charger and you’re ready to go. It’s sturdy (a big bonus when it comes to car chargers) so you don’t have to worry about it wobbling around when you drive over an inevitable pothole. Trust me, I’ve had problems with car units in the past, but this one is the best. And in pink paisley or rose gold, it’s a handy and useful gift for BC awareness month.

HALO takes the worry out of electronics. With any of these extremely useful and attractive devices, there’s one less thing to worry about, and for people going through breast cancer therapy and for survivors, that is being extremely thoughtful.

I love all of the products and would be over the moon if anyone gave me any of them. If your finances won’t allow you to purchase any of these items, a simple card will also lift the spirits of someone going through the BC process. Just show you are thinking of them and you care. That makes all the difference in the world.

Vivofit Jr. 2 from Garmin

Just when we thought Smart Phones were taking up too much of our kids’ time, Garmin changes the game. Now your Smart Phone can be helpful with their APP and the new Vivofit Jr. 2. This tracker is on a comfortable adjustable band that comes in a variety of colors and characters and will motivate kids to stay active, do their chores, and achieve goals, while letting parents know how much sleep their child is getting, their activities, and if they are doing their chores.

The Vivofit Jr. 2 is more than a fitness tracker. There is Disney magic inside every band. It’s customizable and parents can adjust the items as needed, via their Smart Phone.

The Disney Princess band is available in two colors: pink and purple. After they reach their activity goals, there are fun adventures to explore with the Disney princesses on a Smart Phone or tablet. They will help Rapunzel and Flynn escape from Mother Gothel, explore the Cave of Wonders with Jasmine, and other fun things. By achieving the goals, they open up more stories and adventures.

Besides activities, parents can set up their App for homework time, brushing teeth, and other responsibilities. And they will be able to design their own rewards for their kids. By achieving their goals, kids earn coins and parents can decide for themselves how many coins must be earned for a special dessert, a trip to the zoo, or any other reward.

The unit is also water friendly, so kids can wear it in the pool or the bathtub. Besides keeping track of time for responsibilities and sleep, the unit tracks steps and activities. It’s recommended that children get at least 60 minutes of activity every day. This unit will not only encourage kids to move but also let parents know if their kids are keeping active or sitting on the couch watching TV or playing video games.

With interactive games and challenges, kids will want to keep busy and keep moving to unlock more fun.

The Garmin Vivofit Jr. 2 comes in the two Disney Princess designs as well as Minnie Mouse, Star Wars and Marvel Avengers with stretchy and adjustable bands. Boys and girls can use it to connect with their friends who also have the App and challenge them to activities.

The unit connects to a Smart Phone via Bluetooth and comes with a one-year battery that can be replaced when needed. It’s recommended for ages 4 and up.

I tested this for a day. It was comfortable and easy to use.

Sleeping is now easier and more fun with Disney

Parents know that bedtime can be a daunting time for little kids. But help is on the way, courtesy of Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, and Goofy. These classic Disney characters are on hand to give your child a special bedtime message, but don’t wait too long. They are only available until August 31. Simply call toll free 1-877-7-Mickey.

Disney has also teamed up with pediatric sleep coach Lauren Olson (founder of “Sleep and the City”) to provide tips for distraught parents.

“As a mom of two extremely busy toddlers, I know keeping consistent napping schedules and bedtime routines can be a major production – from stall tactics to short naps and pre-dawn wake ups, it can be hard on everyone in the household,” Olson said. “I love that Disney store is providing families with some easy, fun tools, like a sleep rewards chart and light up plush toy, to try and alleviate some of the stresses associated with sleep!”

Lauren’s top tips for common sleep challenges:

Early Wake Up
This is common! If your child is waking up every morning before 6am, it’s time to invest in a black out shades and a light or clock that illuminates when it’s time to get out of bed in the morning.

Won’t Go to Sleep
If your child suddenly refuses to fall asleep on their own or is waking up in the middle of the night, consider introducing a “friend” which is only offered a sleepy time. This can be a blanket or favorite stuffed animal, like the new Cuddleez! This oversized plush can even double as a pillow for toddlers when traveling.

Be Consistent
Consistency is key. Decide on a consistent, yet flexible schedule that works for your life and stick to it as best possible.

Scared at Night
If your child tells you they are scared at night, introduce a “nighttime friend” that is only offered at bed time, and encourage your child to hold, squeeze or sing to their friend should they wake worried at night.

ShopDisney and Disney Stores have great nighttime products besides adorable pajamas and slippers. The plush Belle and Alien light up to give children a little more comfort about being in the dark. There is also a sleeping Stitch and Angel Cuddleez for cuddling and sleeping. These large plush “alien experiments” as so cute, even older kids will love them.

The Disney hotline (available until August 31) along with bedtime tips and products (shopDisney.com/Sleep-Shop) will help parents when it comes to bedtime. And as we all know, a good night’s sleep is important – for all of us!

Disney Eats expands with a second wave of products

The popular kitchen line of products from Disney, Disney Eats, expands with new products for kids and adults. The line was designed to bring families together. After all, a good part of our lives is spent in the kitchen. With items that encourage kids to help out and enjoy being with mom and/or dad while cooking, the products are colorful and filled with the fun of Disney.

There are new Mickey items, including a spoon rest, spatulas, a fun timer, and more. And there are some princess items just hitting the shelves.

For your princess, the newest Flatware Set includes a fork and spoon. They are made of stainless steel with plastic handles. The fork handle is adorned with a pink heart and the spoon with a purple heart. They come in a see-through case and are dishwasher safe.

Another new princess item is the Food Cutter Set. This set includes a large castle shape cutter to create royal sandwiches. There is also a smaller shell-shaped cutter for Ariel fans, as well as a shoe-shaped cutter to remind everyone of Cinderella. Kids will enjoy cutting out food in these magical shapes, and, well, doesn’t food taste better when it is shaped into something fun? Cut out watermelon, cantaloupe, or anything else you can think of to shape them into fun and delicious food. The blades are made of stainless steel and the tops are colorful plastic.

Another great new princess product is a Silicone Food Storage Container. This fits into a lunchbox for easy toting to school. Yes, school is right around the corner. The container comes with a spork, which has a plastic spoon on one end and a fork on the other. The utensil has it’s own plastic container that snaps into the storage container. The storage container expands to fill and then collapses for easy storage. The lid snaps on and is adorned with the phrase “Listen to your Heart” as well as images of Merida, Snow White, and Rapunzel. This purple and pink container is also a fun, whimsical item for adults to use to take their own lunch or snack to the office, the gym, or the park. It is dishwasher safe.

Play Disney Parks App

The new Play Disney Parks App (downloadable free from the App store and Google Play) is an app whose time has come! It makes exploring and enjoying Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort even more fun, if you can believe that. One app works in both Orlando and Anaheim.

So, what exactly is the Play Disney Parks App? It was designed to bring families and friends even closer while enjoying the theme parks. Let’s face it, waiting in lines (queues) is what we all endure when we go to Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, and any of the parks in Walt Disney World. If you look at people in the parks, many of them are standing with their heads down staring at their phones. Well, as long as they are doing this, they might as well incorporate their smart phone with the attraction and share the experience with family and friends.

The mobile app has several modes of play, and some can be played at home too. However, while you are in Disneyland and waiting for the Peter Pan’s Flight attraction, why not play together? Before you even get to the building, there are plenty of fun Q&A games to play. Only one smart phone is needed. The questions are asked to individuals in your party. 2-5 players can play on one phone. Then, when you get to the building part of the queue, there are hidden items to locate and check off on the app. And when you get to the magical lantern, the app will show your party a little magic.

There are several attractions already connected with the app, however if you’re waiting in line for an attraction that doesn’t yet have a special connection, there are some trivia games that will challenge everyone, from young to old.

Another aspect of the app is the Apple Music feature. You can listen to Walt Disney’s Disneyland opening remarks at the location where they were said. And there is plenty of Disney music to play throughout the parks and at home.

Guests ages 13 and older (with a Disney account) can earn achievements while playing with the app.

As Jonathan Ackley, Executive Creative Director Imagineering and Creator of Play Disney Parks, said, it “turns wait time into play time.” The more you explore and play, the more magic there is to encounter.

The technology is being incorporated into the Star Wars Galaxy Edge lands while they are being built in Florida and California. Currently in Anaheim the attractions that have already been specifically associated with the app are Space Mountain, Toy Story Mania, and Peter Pan’s Flight, with more to come.

The Play Disney Parks App provides an immersive experience beyond what the parks already offer. With interactivity and engagement, families and friends spend their time together, while being “together.” This is a multi-generational experience and one sure to add to the fun of Disney Parks.

On a personal note: I played this while waiting for the Peter Pan attraction. It turned the 30-minute wait time into a lot of fun. How’s that for Disney magic?

Olen natural products for babies and kids (and adults)

Olen is a company that has several useful products for babies and kids. Believe it or not, they also can be used for adults and there are other products for the whole family.

Sunblocz is 100%natural sunscreen intended for babies and kids. It has UVA and UVB protection and is water resistant for up to 80 minutes. The sunscreen is dermatologist recommended. This is also hypoallergenic. The Sunblocz Baby+Kids is a mineral sunscreen created especially for the sensitive skin of babies and young kids. However, many adults have ultra sensitive skin and even I use baby sunscreen. So, take this tube of Sunblocz with you to protect your little ones and yourself. ($23.99)

They do also make a regular Sunblocz created for the entire family with an SPF of 50. What else is unique about this product (I am always looking for a great sunscreen) is it repels bugs. How often are you out for a family event and are bothered by bugs? While this isn’t a specific product to repel bugs, that is one additional benefit. So, in essence, you get two products for the price of one. ($24.99)

So how does it smell? We have all spent our days smelling the sunscreen we put on. Yuck. That is one of my pet peeves… sunscreen that has a horrible odor. When I opened the tube of Sunblocz baby, all I smelled was a fresh lemony scent. How delightful!

Another product for babies is Baby Butz cream. It was created to heal diaper rash quickly (4-6 hours), for the benefit and comfort of babies. It’s hypoallergenic and all natural. Baby Butz is 30% zinc oxide, which we know is calming to skin. The greatest part about this is it is fragrance free. No more smelly creams.

Diaper rash creams are a must for parents of babies, but did you know they help adults too? If you have ever had a colonoscopy you know the prep can be brutal on your butt. Using a cream with zinc oxide while preparing for your test is definitely a must. And with the fragrance free aspect of Baby Butz, well, you know you’re going to feel a lot more comfortable the day before you go in for your procedure. (2 Oz. jar lists for $7.99 and the 4 Oz jar lists for $12.99)

Check out their website for more products and information.

Jenny Craig Weight Loss Program

I have seen the commercials on TV and heard a lot about the Jenny Craig Weight Loss Program, so when my cardiologist mentioned that that is the program she recommends to her patients who want/need to lose weight, I decided to test it out. The company offered me several weeks worth of food with my weekly counseling sessions in order to give this a fair trial. Here is what happened.

There are plenty of food choices from which to order. I mainly stayed on the meatless plan but added the 12/12 hours that is part of the new Rapid Results program. This requires you don’t eat anything for 12 hours and during the other 12 hours you consume your daily food menu.

The breakfasts are delicious. My personal favorites are the cinnamon buns, the cinnamon coffee cake, and the cereals. But I also enjoyed the maple French toast and the waffles. Plus the cheese omelet with potatoes was a nice way to start off the day. I think the breakfast choices are my favorites.

The plan calls for a breakfast, “anytime bar,” lunch, snack (fruit is suggested), dinner, and night snack. They also have delicious boxes of vanilla and chocolate shakes. There are suggested fruits and vegetables to add to the meals.

The lunch and dinner entrees are the same, so you don’t have a different set of meals for lunch and one for dinner. You can mix and match, which is a great way to go.

Some of my favorite lunch/dinner entrees are the margarita pizza, the butternut squash ravioli, the mac and cheese with vegetables, the creamy penne with vegetables, and the broccoli cheese baked potato. I also tried several other foods and none of them were terrible. As a matter of fact, they were all delicious and flavorful.

The nighttime snacks are a great way to end the day. They have several salty/spicy snacks and plenty of desserts. The chocolate lava cake and the cupcake are wonderful. When not in the mood for something sweet, the cheese curls and the ranch snaps fit the bill.

The results will vary. Initially I didn’t lose much weight (although I was never hungry and enjoyed the food) and while talking to my counselor Susan, she made adjustments in some of the foods I was adding (coffee creamer, ketchup) so once that happened the pounds began to come off. I had to take a week off during my testing period to cover an event, and yes, I did gain weight when I was off of the program. I knew I would as I drank sugary drinks and ate French fries. But as soon as I went back on the program I lost it all plus more – all within the first week back on the Jenny Craig program. That turned out to be a great experiment for this reviewer!

I think the best way to get the best results out of this program is to follow it EXACTLY. And write down everything you eat. Plus the telephone sessions with the counselor is another benefit of this program.

If I could change something about it, I would like to have them have meal bars that could be taken on the go. Otherwise, I believe this is a great program that delivers results – with delicious food.

Jenny Craig Membership Progrms:

Jenny All Access membership-Initial fee $99 plus a $19 a month recurring billing fee. Access to the membership for a year

MiniMD from Trophy Skin

MiniMD is a personal microdermabrasion system that delivers results. After trying it for a couple weeks, I did notice a difference in my skin.

What is microdermabrasion? Simply put, it gently exfoliates while it smooths the skin. By using the diamond tip, the MiniMD buffs away dead skin cells and gently sucks the top layer of your skin.

Using this unit is easy right from the start, however the more you use it the easier it becomes and the more comfortable you will be with it. The first time I used it my skin was definitely smoother and I noticed some imperfections (blackheads) on my face were gone. As yet, I haven’t seen a reduction in fine lines, however that is possible with continued use, and I intend to keep using this device.

Exfoliation is important to get rid of the damaged top layer of skin. This is the surface layer that is exposed to dirt and pollution every day. By gently buffing it away, the layer underneath is revealed and your skin looks brighter, fresher, and feels smoother. The company says when you use it you will see more radiant and glowing skin, and I have found that to be true.

While I haven’t used it more than a couple weeks, I can definitely see a difference in the texture and color of my skin. Uneven skin tone is now a thing of the past. My skin does look more radiant, and people have noticed!

When you use the MiniMD, you gently rub the unit on clean skin. The diamond tip is gentle and the suction is strong enough to do the job without feeling a harsh tug on your skin.

During winter months the MiniMD will tackle your dry indoor and wind damaged skin, and during summer months it will help clear away the debris from sunscreen and chlorine.

In the past I have had many professional microdermabrasion treatments, each costing at least a hundred dollars. Yes, I did pay that because the treatments always made my skin look fresher and younger, and left it smoother. But you don’t have to pay that any more. You can perform your own microdermabrasion treatment in the privacy of your own house. It only takes about five minutes each time, and you will definitely see and feel the difference after one or two treatments.

I definitely use it and believe in the treatment of microdermabrasion. The company includes additional tips with the unit. That’s a nice touch.

The MiniMD lists for $99. Go to their website for more information and to order.

HALO telescoping flashlights

Have you ever dropped something under the couch and couldn’t see it? I have. Actually, I have dropped things many times but it’s just too dark and too tight to see under the couch. With the HALO Telescoping Flashlight, it’s easy to adjust the light to shine under couches or behind objects to locate items.

Not only is it easy to locate lost items, this telescoping flashlight is also helpful when working on cars. There are countless instances in which a thin flashlight comes in handy.

But these are not only thin flashlights. There have magnetic ends to pick up screws or pins that have fallen out of reach. How cool is that?

The telescoping aspect is just one of the many great things about these lights. They also bend so you can see around corners and into small areas. The also include a built-in ring to hang up the light for storage or for hands-free use.

The lights also can be set as strobes and in SOS mode so if you’re out in the dark, you can be seen and locate assistance.

And these lights are bright! There are 30 LED bulbs in each flashlight. The light can be set to white light, red, or flashing red.

There are two telescoping flashlights in each set. Keep one at home and one in your car. And when you’re thinking of a useful gift for a college student or someone going off on a trip, think about these HALO telescoping flashlights. They come in bronze, red, platinum, and blue. When you order you get two of the same color. Remember – it’s never too early to think about holiday gifts.

‘Incredibles 2’ Jack-Jack Attacks doll from Jakks Pacific

By now you probably know that baby Jack-Jack steals the movie Incredibles 2. This adorable little baby unleashes his super powers throughout the film.

Jakks Pacific has created a fun doll that not only looks cute and will ultimately be a child’s friend, but also has lights and sounds. Beware, this cutie shows off his super powers – in a less dangerous way than the one on screen.

Jack-Jack himself measures about 10 inches tall in a sitting position and 13 inches high when he’s standing. That’s not counting the little tuft of hair on top of his head. He’s not soft and plush because he is interactive! Press his tummy and hear him laugh. But when he gets angry, watch out. His head turns colors and his blue eyes light up, while crying. But once he is over his “tantrum” he chuckles and is back to normal.

Sometimes his head turns red and his eyes light up, accompanied by the “laser” sound. After all, this little kid has laser eyes that can cut through anything. That’s the Jack-Jack in the film. This doll just imitates that, so a child can use his or her imagination while playing with this little fellow.

Pressing his tummy elicits several reactions from the baby. When he sneezes (as he does in the film), his head lights up and he chuckles. Another time he can become almost electric, with buzzing sounds and flashing head.

Did you know Jack-Jack can teleport from one room to another? Imagine that. When his tummy is pressed and he “teleports” his head turns blue. Imagination is key when playing with this little guy.

And Jack-Jack comes with a raccoon “friend.” This hard- plastic raccoon is a little over five inches high with a fluffy tail. He’s ready to “play” with his on-screen nemesis, baby Jack-Jack.

It’s sweet when he says, “Mama.” His baby babble is also adorable.

When you first take this little guy out of the box, open the back of his red suit and turn him to the “I” mode. This is the interactive mode. Then press his tummy for his reactions. When you hold the button down, he really turns on all his super powers, so watch out.

When you see his smiling face, you cannot help but smile yourself. He’s adorable. He’ll definitely be a fun pal for kids throughout this summer and beyond.

Incredibles 2 Jack-Jack Attacks comes complete with lights and sounds and his raccoon pal and is intended for ages 3 and up. He comes with 3 AAA batteries.
